The NFHR has started a youth program. This program is designed to
recognized the youth who work with fjords. The program was described in the
last Herald. If you know of a youth who would be interested in
participating in the program, they can e-mail myself for an application.
Thanks,

Hi Mary - it`s the same over here with the unusual breed business. In
fact, the Fjord is widely known here
in Europe - but like you said, for some reason, ignored. Fjords place
and often win in a myriad of competition
types - but, no matter - people don`t like to accept it. Funny, it`s a
kind of racism, isn`t it ? But we wouldn `t trade
our Norwegians for any other kind of horse - or pony !!
Over here, the Fjord Interest Group sponsers the bi-annual Fjord-Cup -
the first is held in May and is for
juniors only - the second takes place in autumn and is for both
juniors and seniors (kids over 18 yrs of age).
Exclusively for Fjord Horses - it`s quite an event.

I was wondering what people think about having some type of youth
 incentive
program. MAny horse breeds have some type of youth program for kids
 to
participate. I think it would be a great way to encourage kids to get
 out
and exhibit with their fjords. I know we have the Award of Excellence
 and
the Versatility Awards ( which we do participate in) but I think it is
 very
difficult for a lot of kids who have fjords to participate and do well
 at
open shows. I know for my own children that it has taken many years
 for
them to start placing well with their fjords at 4-H shows. I think
 the
unfair reality is that when you show with an unusual breed at an open
 show
that many judges just don't know what to do with with breeds they are
unfamiliar with and so many tend to not even look at them. I think it
 would
be nice for the registry to have some type on incentive program for
 the
youth so we could recognize their efforts with their horses. What do
 other
 people think?

I asked around on the AOL AQHA message board and was directed to this web
site. For those of you interested, here is the address for the riding
program:

http://www.aqha.com/brochures/hrback.html

There's a small fee, you log your hours and get recognition in the Quarter
Horse Journal, and get some token little prizes. Not too bad, considering
you're going to be riding anyways. I find it interesting that though the
horse you ride must be registered with AQHA, you don't have to be the owner of
the horse.

It would be nice to have the same type of recognition for riding/driving our
Fjords, but would it be feasible? The AQHA is a very large organization, with
lots of money for promotion and advertising. The Fjord community is a lot
smaller and cozier. And while $50,000 in the coffers might seem large, by
comparison to the other breeds, I'm sure it's just a drop in the bucket. By
the way, I'm not slamming the small size of the organization, I actually kind
of like it that board members take the time to talk to members on this forum.
AQHA seems more impersonal, and I won't even begin to go into the Arab club
that I joined, and attended one meeting. Jeez I loved that horse, but the
oneupmanship that I saw there was a real turnoff!

Pamela, can you elaborate on the QH riding program you mentioned? It would
give some ideas for what a Fjord program might offer. Is there a fee? How
 are hours logged (honor system?)

I'll have to pull out my husband's QH Journals for the details. I just
recently inherited the mare and started riding her a couple weeks ago. I
don't know if there is a fee, but do understand it is an honor system. I'll
check and let you know in the next day or two. It's information I need to
know now anyways, since I'm going to spend many hours in the saddle on this
mare!

They do. It looks like I'll be joining the QH riding program. We got the QH
mare for my husband, but she's too sensitive for him. Got Juniper for me, but
she's perfect for my special needs son. Nikki for my son, but she's a bit
dead sided for him, so is perfect for my husband. Sigh I'll still be
logging hours on both Fjord mares, but my prime time riding is going to be the
Quarter Horse. But don't feel TOO sorry for me, she's GORGEOUS! A deep, rich
palomino, and she moves so lightly. I can see a future in dressage. Lots of
work and time, and we'll never get to the top levels, but we'll have a lot of
fun.

Now if there were an incentive program for Fjords, I'd join that too.

I agree, Mary, a program for youth is important. Many young people work hard
at learning to care for, ride and train their horses. When my daughter was
showing our Quarterhorse we were busy from day to night - she worked hard to
present herself and our horse at their best. Sometimes she placed, sometimes
not - but regardless she was dedicated and worked hard. Anything to provide
positive experiences is the key - young people not showing work hard, too.
Enjoying horses for pleasure - caretaking - is teaching responsiblilty. I
think the QH association has a program for hours trailriding - kids and adults
can earn point/hours for clothing, halters, etc. based on # of hours logged.
Kids at my boarding barn were very proud of their earned gear.

With Fjords being so versatile - riding, driving, farm work etc. I would think
it would be fun and challenging for youth and adults both to work on those
areas whether in the show ring or not.
