[Flashcoders] Flash window coming out small on some IE browsers

2006-02-15 Thread Ramon Tayag
Hey guys,

This is really strange, and is kinda OT coz it's not actionscript
related. It's more about the Flash Player Detection Kit.

http://test.quirkworks.net/skin/ comes out small only in some IE
browsers (15% of the people i've asked), and I can't seem to figure
out why.

If you see the source code of the site I'm using the detection kit
Macromedia made.

Client is waiting for the fix and.. gah.. I can't seem to find a fix!
Problem is that it works fine in all the computers here in the office.

If it comes out small (window looks like it shrank), what is ur IE
version and OS?

Thank you,

[Flashcoders] Mozilla + wmode = transparent

2006-02-15 Thread Sumeet Kumar
Hi All,

In my application I m using wmode = "transparent" in the flash "embed"
tag.

Now the startDrag is not working proper in the mozilla browser which I
feel is due to wmode = "transparent". As it is working properly in
Netscape and IE

Can Any One suggest a solution or any work around?

Any help would be great?

Re: [Flashcoders] Making the text centered vertically in a combo box

2006-02-15 Thread Johannes Nel
the reason it does not work on the stage is because when you are setting it
theat component is most prob not created. remember that v2 components take a
frame (in some cases 2 frames ) to be created (love this about flex, you
have a creationComplete event). i would suggest trying to poll opver frames
(you can use doLater or an onterFrame (beacon is advised) to do this.

Re: [Flashcoders] multiuser flash games

2006-02-15 Thread Jobe Makar

Hi Rich,

I'm definately biased since I'm president of Electrotank (owner of
ElectroServer). But there are a few points I'd like to add for you:
- You can use all features of ElectroServer for free for up to 20
simultaneous users. So it sounds like the free version would meet your needs
- Latency is 99.9% dependent on the network itself. ElectroServer's typical
response time is under 1 ms. It has been used to create real-time games with
a lot of success with Flash games and non-Flash games. Even cell phone
games.

What I mentioned above (about latency) should probably apply to most server
solutions. I just know that with ES the added latency is negligible.

Adding 0.02565278 to a temp variable, and setting _x to that

Any particular limitation of _x here that i wasnt aware of? Probably.

Yes. *Apparently* positions on the stage are based on twips, or 1/20th
of a pixel, so the least it can actually move is 0.05 pixels. The kind
of incrementation you're done - on movieclip properties - really
should be done on a separate temp variable, as most of the properties
seem to have similar precision limitations.
Well actually they MUST be done on a separate temp variable, because _x
won't even register the change. I expected it to increment the property
until it reached whatever threshold it required to make an actual visual
change, but adding less than 0.05 won't work, period. Anyway no big deal
:) I was just surprised i didn't know about it for so long.

Is AS3 multithreaded? I think I've read somewhere that AS2 (or AS1) is
single threaded. Is that right? Can we use sleep commands in AS3? If not
will AS4 be multithreaded or would that prevent it from running on certain

single threaded. Is that right? Can we use sleep commands in AS3? If not
will AS4 be multithreaded or would that prevent it from running on certain
devices or platforms?

RE: [Flashcoders] Making the text centered vertically in a combo box

2006-02-15 Thread Judah
That might have worked by itself but the combo box didn't like it. I could
still use some help.

I used XRAY specticles to find the label in the combobox but none of my
changes take effect outside of using the trace/exec window in XRAY.

// this code works inside XRAY exec window but not on the stage oddly???
cmb['text_mc']['label']['_y'] = -5;
cmb.focusTextField.label._y = -5
cmb.text_mc.label._y = -5

no, it doesn't. that's from the header of your original mail:

In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

some mail clients go by the header information, others, like e.g. i
assume your Apple Mail go by the subject line.

anyway, i wanted to add that i'm waiting for the linux player, too,
just to show there's interest.

Because many threaded mail readers will still group it with the
subject you deleted and replaced. For instance, I did that with this
one. Apple mail will group it with the Linux 8.5 thread instead of
creating a new one.

it doesn't. there are a whole bunch of other headers included in the message

[Flashcoders] Translating TextField Selection Indexes

2006-02-15 Thread Jason Lutes
How can I convert Selection index values from TextField.text to
TextField.htmlText? There doesn't appear to be a built-in way to locate
the insertion point (caret) or selection range boundaries within a text
field's HTML.

I need to allow users to modify (properties of) text at runtime in word
processor-like fashion. The text is written (together with HTML formatting
tags) to an XML document. TextFormat has limits that I must get around.

Re-cap: I want to be able to more easily munge TextField.htmlText using
positioning information gleaned from Selection.getBeginIndex and
Selection.getEndIndex, etc.

Anyone have this kind of TextField/TextFormat/Selection experience?

The problem lies in loadMovie. Locally, the picture is already
loaded, so when you ask for the pic properties, the computer can give
it to you already.

Online, however, you'll be downloading the picture while trying to
find out its dimensions.

Use MovieClipLoader, and use the listener onLoadInit. In that
listener you can put the code to center your image, resize it, etc.

[Flashcoders] Load centered images in movie clip - Heeelp!

2006-02-15 Thread Rodrigo Hentschke
Hi all, im making a gallery that load an image in a movie clip when i click in
a button. All seems to work perffectly in "local". My problem is when i put my
gallery on-line. To me it appears not to get the "width" and the "height"
untill the image is fully loaded. In the "AS" have some kind of "checker", but
obviously its not working, can someone help this "semi-noob"? :)

here is the link:
http://www.tendez.com.br/lage/test/flash_coders_image_loader.html

Here comes the code i used

in the first frame:

spacing = 10;
containerMC._alpha = 0;
MovieClip.prototype.loadPic = function(pic) {
 _root.containerMC._alpha = 0;
 this.loadMovie(pic);
 _root.onEnterFrame = function() {
  var t = containerMC.getBytesTotal(), l = containerMC.getBytesLoaded();
  if (t != 0 && Math.round(l/t) == 1) {
   var w = containerMC._width+spacing, h = containerMC._height+spacing;
   border.resizeMe(w, h);
   delete _root.onEnterFrame;
  }
 };
};
MovieClip.prototype.resizeMe = function(w, h) {
 var speed = 3;
 this.onEnterFrame = function() {
  this._width += (w-this._width)/speed;
  this._height += (h-this._height)/speed;
  if (Math.abs(this._width-w)<1) {
   this._width = w;
   this._height = h;
   _root.containerMC._x = this._x-this._width/2+spacing/2;
   _root.containerMC._y = this._y-this._height/2+spacing/2;
   _root.containerMC._alpha = 100;
   delete this.onEnterFrame;
  }
 };
};

in the button that calls the image:

on (release) {
 containerMC.loadPic("galerias/aleatorio_01/img/01.jpg");
}

Many, many thanks!

Kerning is a term for print design were you have two type characters
next to each-other and the gap between the characters is either too
tight or loose (close together, or far apart).

By using Kerning you can reduce or increase the distance between the
characters thus making the type more usable and legible.

Hence auto Kerning is a way of allowing flash make a decision on the
spacing between the character if this is a good thing or not it all
depends on the result you are trying to achieve.

Hope this helps :)

Re: [Flashcoders] Re: Working with Dynamic Text...

2006-02-15 Thread Charles Parcell
Kerning is the spacing between each character. When you have kerning turned
on it will adjust the spacing between character so that they look more
uniform. The amount of space needed before and after the letter 'T' is much
different than that needed for 'G'. This is because the 'G' is more bloated
at the sides where 'T' is more narrow at the side. So, you can really but-up
a letter before and after a 'T' where as you will need more space before and
after a 'G'.

From dictionary.com

The process of reducing the spacing between certain
pairs of letters to improve their appearance. When a
font
is created, each
characteris given
a width that includes
some space around it so that the letters don't run into each
other when displayed or printed. This can be thought of as an
invisible box around each character. Some pairs of characters
such as A and V, look better if the boxes overlap slightly,
bringing the characters closer together (but still not
touching).

RE: [Flashcoders] CVS/VCS confusion

2006-02-15 Thread Scott Hyndman
Do you mean VSS (Visual SourceSafe)?

If so, the big difference is that SourceSafe costs money, and CVS does not.
Operating system support may also be an issue. I'm not sure if you can get a
CVS server running on Windows (maybe with Cygwin?), and VSS only supports
Windows.

SVN (subversion) is another option. The server can run on MacOSX I believe.

And there are lots of differences in the finer points, but for most uses,
you'll never notice.

My inferefence is, if the codec is:
- small in filesize
- easy to port to PC, Mac, & Linux
- good performance

Then Adobe would support it. If you read Tinic's article, however, many
well known codecs fail to meet even the simplest of criteria. For example,
there was tons of uproar about why Flash 8 didn't support On2. Go read the
hardware system requirements, and you'll see why.

Ok, well apparantly all it takes is finally giving in and asking for help to
get me to figure it out. Always seems to happen that way. O well, the way
I fixed it was by adding a gotoAndPlay(1); into the onLoadComplete event.
It seems as though even though it was loaded, it hadnt started playing yet
and I guess it couldnt get the correct width until it was actually in a
frame.

- Their video window is smaller than yours - yours is 4:3 their is
much more letterbox shaped
- Your video includes panning - this means changing the whole scene -
takes up lots of data
- Their video actually has a very small area which changes. Given
that the whole purpose of the site is
to push broadband video they may even have fudged it by using still
backdrops and then smaller video clips

on top rather than just one long video.

Try encoding some "talking head" video without any pans or cuts and
you'll get much better quality for

your data rate.

Hope this is helpful

Cheers

Joe

[Flashcoders] Serial Port Access From Browser

2006-02-15 Thread clark slater
Hey Folks,

I'm developing a remote control web interface for a client and need to
read/write from and to the serial port from a SWF running in a browser.
Obviously I am going to need some extra shizzle to make this happen. I am
thinking about using a custom activex control that allows this, but I'm not
sure about communication from the SWF to the other control.

I can think of several ways to achieve this outside the browser but I'm
having trouble thinking of a solution that will run in the browser.

Anyone done this before and care to share any insights?

[Flashcoders] CVS/VCS confusion

2006-02-15 Thread Clive Sweeney
I'm trying to sort out CVS and VCS, the differences and similarities,
and how we should best try to integrate them into the practices of a
small but growing Flash development team (both PC and Mac). I've done
some preliminary searching -- including the Flashcoders Archive -- but
most of what I've found seems to assume considerable previous knowledge
of what it's all about.

Could anyone recommend some basic articles and/or tutorials on this
subject? Or perhaps suggest approaches that have worked best in your own
work environment?

Re: [Flashcoders] flv video encoding for flash 7

2006-02-15 Thread Fabio Sonnati

I don't understand why MM had inserted such a inefficient spark encoder in
flash 8 video encoding tool...perhaps to enphatize the vp6 codec.
Don't ever use the flash7 video encoder of flash8. Use sorenson squeeze
instead or, even better, FFMPEG. The result is a million year ahead (bu
obviously wrost than vp6).
For a short intro to the effectiveness of FFMPEG (which is an open source
tool).

I used the flash 8 video encoding tool and set it for flash 7 high quality
(700k) and the video is very pixelated, I've uploaded it here for review :

http://bluetubecom.web123.discountasp.net/clients/soapbox/videotest.html

the original quicktime is here :

http://bluetubecom.web123.discountasp.net/clients/soapbox/img/PortVideo/SBS_open_for_flash-test.mov

the flv version is really pixelated, not acceptable at all. Someone
suggested using sorenson squeeze instead of the flash video encoder as it
may produce better results but I'm pretty green on flash video.

The settings I used for that where :

Sorenson spark codec, frame rate same as source (29.xx), keyframe
placement automatic, quality, custom, 1000 kilobits per sec, no video
resize, audio mp3, 128kbs stereo.

Thanks
Grant.

I don't see a 2pass VBR in the Flash 8 encoder... squeeze may be a good

RE: [Flashcoders] Resize MC within an MC

2006-02-15 Thread Mendelsohn, Michael
The big problem is that I'm taking into consideration varying aspect
ratios of monitors these days. There's the standard 4 x 3 and the
widescreen laptops, etc., etc.

I can get a formula working for one type of aspect ratio, but not
seemingly for all. The last step I divide the screen width by height to
get the height of the inner MC. It never works. Get bounds also doesn't
seem to return good results if the drawrect of the director stage is
manipulated.

If it's a simple case of getting a shape of 400 pixels to be 1600
pixels,
you need to get it 4 times bigger.

It sounds like it's not that simple.

You probably need to worry about any current scalings applied at the
time.
Does it help to do a getBounds(_root) on the inner shape - that should
at
least give you the width that the embedded Flash movie currently
considers
the clip to be. Then divide 1600 by that width value, and that'll give
you
the number of times you need to scale up the _root clip to get an inner
clip
that's 1600 pixels wide - as far as Flash is concerned.

Then you'll need to worry about the scaling Director is applying to your
movie - and it's been a couple of years since I've paid any attention to
Director at all, I'm afraid. But I'd think all you need to do is compare
the
width of the embedded Flash object to its original published width, and
apply that factor on top of any other scaling factors you've already
applied...

Sorry I can't be of more immediate help.

my recommendation would also be to use sorenson squeeze. here's the
equation i use (taken from a video tutorial on macromedia.com) to
calculate data rate:

( ( movieWidth x movieHeight x fps ) / 1000 ) / 2.5

check these two links for more:

Not good... we don't have that approved for use here.

I think it is because we upgraded to the latest FLV encoder (which
doesn't use the squeeze). Does anyone have last year's encoder? I
am
thinking that the new encoder is presenting the issue. We just
>>reloaded
our macs, so it makes sense. I did not have any problems with the
Sorenson Version from last year.

How FRUSTRATING! Thanks for your input!

I used the flash 8 video encoding tool and set it for flash 7 high quality
(700k) and the video is very pixelated, I've uploaded it here for review :

http://bluetubecom.web123.discountasp.net/clients/soapbox/videotest.html

the original quicktime is here :

http://bluetubecom.web123.discountasp.net/clients/soapbox/img/PortVideo/SBS_open_for_flash-test.mov

the flv version is really pixelated, not acceptable at all. Someone
suggested using sorenson squeeze instead of the flash video encoder as it
may produce better results but I'm pretty green on flash video.

The settings I used for that where :

Sorenson spark codec, frame rate same as source (29.xx), keyframe placement
automatic, quality, custom, 1000 kilobits per sec, no video resize, audio
mp3, 128kbs stereo.

Thanks
Grant.

Why are trying to make FLVs from another application? I would use Flash

[Flashcoders] Be able to load ONE font face out of FIFTY font faces only when needed?!

2006-02-15 Thread Jack H
Is there a way to load embedded fonts on the fly?
The ways I have found to do this have been
unacceptable thus far.

What I would like to be able to do is as follows:

1) Load a main SWF file with textfields
2) Upon some user interaction, another SWF file is
loaded which contains the embedded fonts for the
particular fontface that the user has selected
3) Once this fontface SWF file completely loads, I can
change the fonts of the existing textfields in the
Main SWF file.

I would like to load the embedded fonts ONLY when the
user has requested them. I have read that placing
shared fonts within the main SWF file will have a
similiar effect, HOWEVER, this will not work within my
parameters, as that would load ALL the fontfaces I'd
like the user to be able to change the textfields to
ALL AT ONCE.

There could be as much as 50 different fontfaces and
I'd like to only load the fontface when I need it
while using a single main SWF file.

Does anyone know if this is at all possible?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: [Flashcoders] MPEG-4 in FMS

2006-02-15 Thread eric dolecki
I am fairly ignorant on mpeg4 and the flash player - but i would think mpeg4
requires a fairly beefy machine for playback... and that Flash tries to
lower its lowest common denominator as much as possible.

On2 doesn't require the resources for playback that mpeg4 does. Or perhaps I
am way off on this...

[Flashcoders] MPEG-4 in FMS

2006-02-15 Thread sean
As far as I'm aware, not only is there no way at present of serving out
MPEG-4 format video feeds via FMS but the Flash player itself obviously
won't entertain it. Interestingly, the Flash-Lite player will it seems as
I understand it supports MP4 (MPEG4 basically). From my ongoing contact
with the web/iptv video serving industry I have to say that it seems
Macromedia,
sorry, Adobe, are one of the few not going the standard MPEG-4 route. I'd
really like to hear peoples thoughts on this (especially Macr...Adobe's)
as I recently came across a set top box ip/tv company who wanted to make
their entire front end in Flash (video and program interface) but decided
against it because of the industry trend to use MPEG-4. It would seem that
this hasn't stopped the likes of Moxi and other less well knowns. Your
thought, suggestions and experience would be great to hear on this.

Re: [Flashcoders] Resize MC within an MC

2006-02-15 Thread Ian Thomas
If it's a simple case of getting a shape of 400 pixels to be 1600 pixels,
you need to get it 4 times bigger.

It sounds like it's not that simple.

You probably need to worry about any current scalings applied at the time.
Does it help to do a getBounds(_root) on the inner shape - that should at
least give you the width that the embedded Flash movie currently considers
the clip to be. Then divide 1600 by that width value, and that'll give you
the number of times you need to scale up the _root clip to get an inner clip
that's 1600 pixels wide - as far as Flash is concerned.

Then you'll need to worry about the scaling Director is applying to your
movie - and it's been a couple of years since I've paid any attention to
Director at all, I'm afraid. But I'd think all you need to do is compare the
width of the embedded Flash object to its original published width, and
apply that factor on top of any other scaling factors you've already
applied...

Sorry I can't be of more immediate help.

RE: [Flashcoders] PLEASE HELP ~ FLV SYNCH ISSUES ~ Big Deadliine!

2006-02-15 Thread Merrill, Jason
(not responding on WAMMO because I'm not a fan of people who
cross-post... but I'll give you a break since you have a deadline and
respond here)

Why are trying to make FLVs from another application? I would use Flash
7 or 8's video encoder to make the FLV - can you export an AVI or
Quicktime file and encode to FLV using Flash?

RE: [Flashcoders] Resize MC within an MC

2006-02-15 Thread Mendelsohn, Michael
It's actually a lot more complicated than that because the swf is
sitting inside Director, and I'm aligning the swf to point(0,0) of the
stage and I've stretched out the stage to the dimensions of the monitor.
Then, I'm zooming in on a video by way of increasing Directors drawRect.
I'm suspecting that the multiplier for stretching out the drawRect
boundaries is different from the multiplier of the smaller rectangles
within it. I simply cannot figure out the formula to do this. Ugh.

[Flashcoders] External Imaging Nightmares

2006-02-15 Thread Jamie Alpers
Ok, I am new to this group so if this is something that has already been
answered and/or is stupid, feel free to flog me (hopefully after providing
me with some insight as to the answer).

Anyway, I am trying to create a flash file where I can provide it a list of
jpg filenames (I'll figure out where this will come from later, maybe an XML
file) and it will load the images into movie clips and resize them so they
fit in their perspective MovieClip's. My problem is that whenever I try and
load the JPG into the movie clip and then resize the movie clip, the image
will disappear, and if I try and trace the width and height of the image
(before or after loading the image) it returns 0 (which since I would have
no clue the starting resolution to do the math, rules out using xscale and
yscale even though they are the only reliable working thing right now). The
structure I am trying to use is

*Pic1 (MovieClip)* - this is the main movie clip that I want to hold
everything involving a single image.

Pic1 contains:
*Frame (MovieClip)* - a simple movie clip filled with black so that when I
overlay the image on top of it I will have a border
*PicData (MovieClip)* - a blank movie clip that I try and load the jpg into.

I have tried loading the jpg by using Pic1.PicData.loadMovie(); and by using
a MovieClipLoader so I can hold off on changing the width until the
onLoadComplete event is triggered. Regardless of how I load the movie, the
result is always the image disappearing if i try and change the width or
height.

The only things that seems to almost work are the _xscale and _yscale (which
are of no use without being able to determine the original width and height
so I can calculate the scale I need) and changing the width and height of
Pic1 (which changes the width of the image but also shrinks my frame).

I even tried taking PicData out of Pic1 so that I could change it's width
without messing with my border but no such luck. I also tried using the
following structure:

*Pic1 (MovieClip)* - contains the frame
*PicData (MovieClip)* - will contain the picture

Pic1 contains:
*Frame (MovieClip)* - the movie clip with the black frame

PicData contains:
*PicInnerData (MovieClip)* - used to load the jpg.

I tried this because I figured that since changing Pic1's width earlier
changed both the frame and the image, if i broke them out but kept the image
in the same type of structure that maybe changing PicData's width would
change the width of the image in PicInnerData but I had no such luck there.
At this point I am extremely confused and am probably confusing everyone on
this list with this email, but I'm hoping somewhere out there may have come
across something like this in the past and may have a clue as to how I
should go about fixing it.

Thanks for any help.

-Jamie

2006-02-15 Thread Lord, Susan Ms. (CONTR)

Not good... we don't have that approved for use here.

I think it is because we upgraded to the latest FLV encoder (which
doesn't use the squeeze). Does anyone have last year's encoder? I am
thinking that the new encoder is presenting the issue. We just reloaded
our macs, so it makes sense. I did not have any problems with the
Sorenson Version from last year.

How FRUSTRATING! Thanks for your input!

Flash 8.0.22 and I've had a couple inquiries from some linux users.

[Flashcoders] Resize MC within an MC

2006-02-15 Thread Mendelsohn, Michael
Hi list...

I have a MC of a rectangle with dimensions 1600 x 1200, registration
point at 0,0. In it is another MC of a square that's 400 x 300, located
at the upper left corner (0,0) of the _parent. I want to stretch out
the _parent MC just enough so that the inner MC _width becomes 1600. I
can't seem to figure out the math to determine the width of the _parent
MC to do this. I know the answer should be approximately 4096, but what
is the formula? Everything I try seems to be slightly off.

var coeffW = 4;
//(1600/400)
parentMC._width = Math.roundparentMC._width * coeffW)) * coeffW);

Thanks,
- Michael M.

Re: [Flashcoders] don't think this is possible - 100% of variable height table cell

2006-02-15 Thread John Giotta
That is kind of backwards... if you where just looking to fill a cell
you just set the width to 100%, but you have your reasons.

I suggest using JavaScript to write the Flash element to the cell with
HTMLElement.innerHTML or better yet FlashObject
http://blog.deconcept.com/flashobject/

However, the trick is knowing the height of cell... I'm not sure if
this is possible at runtime if the property isn't already defined in
the tag.

[Flashcoders] switch - case

2006-02-15 Thread lieven.cardoen
Hey to ya all,

I'm trying to do following, which obviously won't work, but is there
another way without having to use if else if else if else...

var model:Observable =
Observable(this._content.divideSentenceSteps.getById(indexCurrentAttempt
+2));

switch(model){

case (instanceof DivideSentenceStep2) :

logger.debug("DivideSenteceStep2");

break;

default :

logger.debug("Not Known");

break;

}

}

thx

Met vriendelijke groeten,
Lieven Cardoen

RE: [Flashcoders] asp + flash

2006-02-15 Thread Ben Smeets

This might be a sandbox / security issue. Try to check (by logging
something or sending a mail to yourself if logging is not an option) to
see if your asp actually gets called by the swf in the browser (my guess
is not). Adding a crossdomain.xml might work?

Yes, there is, do this :

import mx.data.binding.ObjectDumper;

// usage of static function toString like this
trace(ObjectDumper.toString(theObjectYouWantToDump));

[Flashcoders] don't think this is possible - 100% of variable height table cell

2006-02-15 Thread Tom Rhodes
Hi all,

Does anyone know a way to force a movie with a fixed width to fill 100% of a
table cells height?

I'm thinking it's not possible, but if there was a way to get the height of
a cell through js, then maybe it is, I can't find any usefull info on the
subject at all.

cheers,

tom.
