Re: [Flashcoders] Re: Biased Random Particle Distribution

2006-05-26 Thread clark slater

Hi Ron,

Thanks for jumping into this thread amongst the tumbleweeds. Yes, I suspect
something logarithmic could work but don't know where to start. I am trying
to distribute 1000 particles randomly in a rectangular distribution area,
with a bias towards one side of the rectangle.

Use question.textHeight not question._height

Are textHeight / textWidth accurate when used in combinaison with

It don't seems to evaluate the extra sizes correctly.

[Flashcoders] bitmapdata question / attachBitmap

2006-05-26 Thread grimmwerks

Hey - I'm merely curious...

Say I do this:

tPhoto =  pGui.thisScreen.createEmptyMovieClip("photoMC",
pGui.thisScreen.getNextHighestDepth(),{_alpha:0});
tPhoto.cacheAsBitmap=true;
bkgrnd = new BitmapData(1, 1, false, 0x00FF, {_alpha:0});
tPhoto.attachBitmap(bkgrnd, 1);

Now, say later, in some other function, I want to change this
bitmapData but I don't have a reference to it (other than the above
'temp' tPhoto) -- can I actually 'get' this bitmapData again through
some other means, or do I ALWAYS have to have a variable/ref to it?

Not sure if I'm explaining right: but as I have a ref to
pGui.thisScreen, which is a movieclip, and then 'photoMC' is a
movieclip in that, then I'm attachBitmap to photoMC ---

mainClip
  -photoMC
 - bitMapData

Does that make any sense?

Hi Everyone,

I'm having a problem with the dynamic text field autosize property. The
problem I'm having is that I'm not catching the correct height of the
textfield directly after the textfield is filled with text. In other
words, I create a dynamic textfield and give it a set width and then I
set all the properties (selectable, multiline, wordwrap, embed fonts,
autosize, html etc). Then I fill it with html text and then I get its
height. If you will look at my code below you can see that I have the
variables a, b, and c all set to question._height. Every single time I
test this and trace it in the output window I get a =34, b=92, and c=92
(92 is the correct height of the textfield). Does anyone have an
explanation? The text I'm filling the textfield with is loaded from the
data base way before this code executes. It seems that the code is
faster than the textfield can fill up. Is there anyway to detect when
the textfield has filled and autosized?

test_mc.createTextField("question_txt", 1000, 0, 0, 385, 0);

question = _root.test_mc.question_txt;

question.selectable = false;

question.multiline = true;

question.wordWrap = true;

question.embedFonts = true;

question.autoSize = true;

question.html = true;

//flash is taking too much time rendering out this text

question.htmlText = ""+myHTML+"";

//the following is jerry rigged and needs to be fixed

a = question._height;

trace("a = " + a);

b = question._height;

trace("b = " + b);

c = question._height;

trace("c = " + c);

Hello All,

I have a ton of components scattered throughout my application, and most
of them react to changes of a specific variable.

It's getting really old, having to manually write code - that updates
all these controls with the new value of a specific variable, when a
specific variable changes. It would be nice to just have ONE function,
that propagates all the changes to all my controls, and then have an
active listener applied to a variable which automatically triggers that
specific function.

Am I overlooking something, or is there a better way to do something
like this?

Thank you all in advance, for any suggestions you can throw my way.

RE: [Flashcoders] Can Variables have listeners?

2006-05-26 Thread phaedrus
Sounds like you want to wrap the variable(s) in a class and have that class
broadcast events that your components can listen for and react to.

I haven't gotten to the chapter yet, but I think Moock's Essential
Actionscript 2.0 describes it in Chapter 352 (Observer Design Pattern)

Alternatively, you might do it by using mx.events.EventDispatcher in your
wrapper class.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Can Variables have listeners?

If Flash can be used for e-learning (as we do), what would make it
so
incredible to believe that Flex could also? I find e-learning to be
well-suited to forms-style development, particularly if you throw in
some script-driven animation. Seems to me Flex is probably better
suited to this kind of work than Flash is.

Now, I'm not sure I'd want to develop a cartoon in Flex...

Sorry. Too bad, it was really nicely done. The nice thing is Flex
provides you with the really great components and state change

interaction and presentation, and still do Actionscript. So it really
could be applied to a host of web applications and interactive

Re: [Flashcoders] UPDATE movie clip load order FIFO or FILO

2006-05-26 Thread Jason C Reynolds

Update for anyone who cares...
It seems flash 7 and 8 are different in how they load movie clips. Using an
older version of Zinc(which uses player 7) works just fine. Seems to me,
Flash 8 loads them first in last out, where Flash 7 loads them first in
first out.

Good to know for me at least!

Subject: [Flashcoders] movie clip load order FIFO or FILO

Hi, I recently purchased Zinc to simply have more control over the window
(placement, title, icon - that's all I wanted for this project!!) and it is
causing issues with my program.

I use the following code to create some movie clips:

 for (var i=0;i  paLoadedSwatchClips.push(new swatch(this, pobjMainRef, pmcSWFHolder, i,
filePath, theCounterValues[i]));

 }

The swatch class has the following code that actually creates the clips:

loadListener.onLoadInit = function(target_mc:MovieClip)
 {
  trace(target_mc + ' is done loading' + ' !! ' + thisRef.pnID);
  var mdm = _global.mdm;
  mdm.Exception.DebugWindow.trace(target_mc + ' is done loading' + ' !! ' +
thisRef.pnID, mdm.ASYNC)

  thisRef.pmcLoadedClip = target_mc; // Set reference for calling play and
stop

  thisRef.pobjSetRef.mClipDone();
  // Store height before we put textfield on there
  thisRef.pnMyHeight = target_mc._height;
  thisRef.mCreateCounter(initialCount);
 }
 mcLoader.addListener(loadListener);
 var thePath = _global.mdm.Application.path + swfPath;
 mcLoader.loadClip(swfPath, pmcButton);

My trace statements in Flash are in order - 0,1,2.
I am using Flash MX 2004.

When I run it through Zinc, and when customer support runs my files, the
trace statements are reversed - 2,1,0

I guess I'm wondering if load order has changed since 2004 version... This
problem is breaking this part of my program when I run it through Zinc, and
want to know if it is Zinc, or an issue with Flash?

Any help would be appreciated,
Jason

[Flashcoders] Re: Biased Random Particle Distribution

2006-05-26 Thread clark slater

Here I go answering my own question.

To make it more dense toward the origin, use {x,y} = {random[]^2,
random[]^2}--squaring the independently generated numbers (random[]*random[]
won't work). The result is a distribution with a sharp cusp at the
origin--the probability is a maximum there, and has a discontinuous
derivative. You can use higher powers for narrower (and sharper)
distributions.

Damn useful I say!

Re: [Flashcoders] Disable all buttons

2006-05-26 Thread eka

Hello ;)

Si tu peux parler français (vu ta signature) cela sera + simple pour moi
pour t'aider :)

Tu peux stocker tous tes boutons avec une référence de chacun d'eux dans un
tableau :

var buttonList = new Array() ;

EKA+ :)

Re: [Flashcoders] Disable all buttons

One dirty way is to place a one blank button over all your other buttons -
set the btn to usehandCursor to false. This may or may not suit your needs.

[Flashcoders] Rookie question

Hey everyone,

I am using the XML object to load an xml document from the local file system.
It appears to be a standart http GET. Has anyone used an hypertext
pre-processer with the XML object? I'd like to have the xml page processed as
*.asp. Any thoughts?

[Flashcoders] Seeking Graphic Designer (Flash & ISD background a plus)

2006-05-26 Thread Merrill, Jason
Seeking Graphic Designer (Flash & ISD background a plus)

This posting is about a great opportunity to work for one of the largest
companies in the world, the second largest U.S. bank. In my new job at
Bank of America on the Learning Technology Solutions team in Charlotte,
they are looking for another team member to be graphic designer.

An e-learning/ISD background is a plus, but not required. Flash,
Lectora, Flex, and Captivate experience are also a plus, but also not
required. This is primarily a graphic design position with some
opportunity to use the above tools as well.

This is a full-time position. Work site options are likely Charlotte,
NC at the new Gateway plaza campus for sure (our headquarters, that
would be preferable) or where we have team members in Norfolk and
Richmond.

Contact me off list if you are interested. If you'd like to apply,
please also send a cover letter, resume, and portfolio samples.

think f-in-box is meant to do that... I may be wrong however.

Basically, it's a Runtime flv compositer. The movies were untouched from
camera to FLV (except for encoding of course) and the rest of what you see
is using BitmapData object and some flash 8 filters at runtime.

this is a demo I did a while back. Chris Allen said I didn't publicize it
correctly ;) You can download the source on that page as well.

RE: [Flashcoders] Flash interface in directx application

Flash in a box does provide a means to render swf to DirectX 3d objects as a
texture. Check out the examples... It even supports .NET, Win32 and Delphi
applications.

Hi Lee,

I don´t think that it´s what he wants... I guess he wants something that can
read swf and then render it to a directdraw surface for example, I don´t
think f-in-box is meant to do that... I may be wrong however.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash interface in directx application

2006-05-26 Thread mike cann

Hi, and thanks for your replies.

Marcelo, i couldn't find that project you were talking about on OSFLASH.org.
Tho i do remember coming across a game engine (perhaps open source) that
touted ease and speed of creation of custom games. In it i remember it
saying that it used flash for its interfaces because its quick to build
interactive interfaces with.

Lee, im not entirely sure that is what im looking for. If i understand
correctly f-in-box is just a standalone wrapper for a .swf file? Or can it
be used as an API for loading and interfacing with a SWF in a .Net project?

Thanks again for your replies!
Mike

2006-05-26 Thread Merrill, Jason
Dan - I looked through all my bookmarks at home last night and couldn't
find that e-learning course done with Flex - maybe I didn't bookmark it.
Sorry. Too bad, it was really nicely done. The nice thing is Flex
provides you with the really great components and state change
capabilities so you can focus on inserting really rich flash .swfs for
interaction and presentation, and still do Actionscript. So it really
could be applied to a host of web applications and interactive
presentations.

[Flashcoders] problems with dynamic text field autosize property

2006-05-26 Thread Scott Brantley

Is there anyway to detect when
the textfield has filled and autosized?

test_mc.createTextField("question_txt", 1000, 0, 0, 385, 0);

question = _root.test_mc.question_txt;

question.selectable = false;

question.multiline = true;

question.wordWrap = true;

question.embedFonts = true;

question.autoSize = true;

question.html = true;

//flash is taking too much time rendering out this text

question.htmlText = ""+myHTML+"";

//the following is jerry rigged and needs to be fixed

a = question._height;

trace("a = " + a);

b = question._height;

trace("b = " + b);

c = question._height;

trace("c = " + c);

Thanks,

Scott

[Flashcoders] Kerning algortihms

2006-05-26 Thread Alias

hi all,

I've recently been doing some stuff involving complicated text
manipulation/animation, and I've come to the conclusion that decent
kerning is basically essential to this.

Currently, my approach is based on laying the text out and
interrogating the _x positions of each character (in a seperate
movieclip) and using that as positioning data.

However, although this is suitable for simple once-off purposes, it is
obviously not practical for dynamic text. So, I'm wondering if anyone
has any experience with kerning tables or some kind of kerning
algorithm in flash? are there any good resources for this that you can
point me towards?

Thanks in advance,
Alias

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash interface in directx application

2006-05-26 Thread Marcelo de Moraes Serpa

Hello Mike,

There has been some projects towards this I´m sure, but I don´t remember
their names or websites... I guess that they are listed on OSFLASH.org,
under Flash Players (Open Source Flash Projects)... If I´m not wrong there
were a .NET C# implementation of a library that could read swf´s for the
purpose you are asking...

Good luck,

Hi,

I know this was asked back in '04 but it wasn't really answered to my
satisfaction and i hope that there is a better solution now.

What i would like to do is develop a DirextX 3D application but use flash
as
an interface system for it.

So what i would like to know is:

1) is it possible to even run flash inside a DirectX application (render
to
a texture?)
2) if that is possible, can u use flash to communicate with and receive
information from the host application?

This is only theory at the moment, I'm considering different projects i
could do for my final year project of university ;)

[Flashcoders] Settings window presence

2006-05-26 Thread Jan Oosterhuis
I am still trying to find a solution for some problems I have with
the System.showSettings(1) dialog box.

Apparently you cannot catch the 'close' event of this box.
My next approach would be to do a repeated check for the presence
(visibility) of this box.
I found a trick that could be used with player 6, but it does not
work with newer players.
And I discovered I could not use a hitTest() for a movieclip that is
covered by the settings box.

What trick can be used to detect the presence of this dialog box?

Re: [Flashcoders] what's the best tutorial for the bitmapdata API

Basically, it's a Runtime flv compositer. The movies were untouched from
camera to FLV (except for encoding of course) and the rest of what you see
is using BitmapData object and some flash 8 filters at runtime.

this is a demo I did a while back. Chris Allen said I didn't publicize it
correctly ;) You can download the source on that page as well.

2006-05-26 Thread Steven Sacks
So what you're asking is if anyone on a Flash coders list knows how to code
a Visual Basic wrapper to override Windows OS print dialog boxes?

I think you would have more luck taking this question to a VB users group
where people would have more experience with those two environments that are
outside the realm of Flash. Flash just makes a call to the wrapper which
handles everything. It has nothing to do with Flash and everything to do
with the wrapper.

There is no easy way to totally protect the contents of a swf, but you can
easily keep hot-linkers and swf downloaders from success:

Of course, it's still pretty easy to decompile most swf's, since it is an open

Re: [Flashcoders] _url

2006-05-26 Thread Carl Welch

found this from:
http://flashmove.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-2946

_url
then..
SetVariable "URL" = "http://www.yoururl.com/your.swf";
SetVariable "File" = "your.swf"
then do something like:

if (_url eq URL) {
gotoAndPlay (5); #whatever frame the content is in
} else {
gotoAndPlay (3); #msg saying, "go to our site to view this"
}

Hey Mikko Törmälä,

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually i don't have access to the showing servers.. as i am chekcing out
the posibilities for a security against deeplinking..

That's the reason that flashvars isn't enough security to test it with.

Thanks though.. if you have any more thoughs i'd love to hear them.

Create a container swf on the showing server for the other swf.
Then grab the _url from the container swf. If this isn't possible for you
(ie. you can't place swfs on the showing server) I think the only option
left is to pass the url via flashvars to the embedded movie.

[Flashcoders] when can you read properties of a loaded swf?

2006-05-26 Thread David Skoglund
Hi, again... one more problem that has puzzled me for a while now.

I am loading in a several swf:s and want them to dynamically scale to fit in on
a set of buttons. I thought that the clip would be ready for manipulation when
the loadComplete event occurs but I still can't read the width of the loaded
clip...

mclListener.onLoadComplete = function(target_mc:MovieClip, status:Number):Void {
trace('target_mc._width: ' + target_mc._width)  // traces "0"

target_mc.onEnterFrame= function(){
   trace('this width: ' + _width)// traces "70" (correct width)
}
};

As you see when I delay the trace to the next enterFrame it works. Is there a
way to force the clip to update? Preferably without updating the entire stage.

Thanks for your help!

Use the Connection.call() method to call your routine with a callback to
your object. Place your onStatus and onResult methods in your callback
object. Your status information should be passed to your callback object.

[Flashcoders] Flash interface in directx application

2006-05-26 Thread mike cann

Hi,

I know this was asked back in '04 but it wasn't really answered to my
satisfaction and i hope that there is a better solution now.

What i would like to do is develop a DirextX 3D application but use flash as
an interface system for it.

So what i would like to know is:

1) is it possible to even run flash inside a DirectX application (render to
a texture?)
2) if that is possible, can u use flash to communicate with and receive
information from the host application?

This is only theory at the moment, I'm considering different projects i
could do for my final year project of university ;)

Thanks all

I do not know of a way to do this, but would be interested if you do find

Anyone have tips on making Flash read the image map on the host html
page and parse it into a multi-dimensonal array (as would happen if
we were importing xml)?

In a web-based project, we provide non-flash browsers with a jpg and
image map. We want to grab the image map data directly from the html
and send it to the swf so that Flash can construct hit areas and URLs
from that data (it's too cumbersome to copy this data manually into
the .fla). I'm having trouble parsing the image map data inside
Flash. For one thing, I have to account for the way I.E. rewrites
html (different quoting conventions, for example). It would be nice
if the image map data were sent to Flash in more of an xml format.

Does this already exist? Any thoughts?

TIA,

Marc

[Flashcoders] Printing without print dialog box in an exe

2006-05-26 Thread rishi
Hi

I need to give a print command from flash without opening the print dialog box.
I have my application embedded in VB. I want to know the proposed solutions. I
know this can be done and can see this working in flash jester jprintor. But
I’ld like to know some more tools. Also ,if somebody has worked with Jprintor.
Please advise.

I need to discuss, this,

Rishi
