I don't want to have to resort to using pngs, since these exact
same gifs will also be loaded into the html page...

Any suggestions welcome...

All right. Your data are stored as some kind of array, presumably? So
you're
drawing lines from one point to another. So what you need is a system for
selecting an area of the graph, converting it to a region of x-values,
recalculating the corresponding y-values and putting them into the array.
Then you'll redraw your graph to give the final result, yes?

So: selection: on mouseDown, store the x-position. On enterFrame, look for
the current x-position and draw a nice semi-transparent rectangle over
your
graph in the appropriate position. On mouseUp, find the leftmost
x-position
and convert to an x-value in your array, and the same for the rightmost
x-value. This gives you a start and finish point for your recalculation.
Calculate your values, redraw the graph and you're done.

Any help?

yup - you can do it without FMS. Not sure about 9 like others have said
(CPU), but I've had 5 running at the same time before and had success.
Online. No FMS. No media playback component. Just some video objects and
code.

[Flashcoders] why are my class property's strong typing being ignored?

2006-11-15 Thread Rich Rodecker

Hello,

I've got a class named 'Settings' which has a number of properties. Those
properties are strongly typed to various types...string, number, boolean,
etc.

I'm loading in xml in a separate Model class, and then parsing the xml and
assigning the that various values in the xml to the properties of the
Settings class. However, all the values are being set as a string (that
part I expected since I am assigning the values of text nodes, which of
course are strings, in the xml to the Setting's properties)...and I'm not
getting any parse errors when I try and assign a string to a property that
is strongly typed as a number, or boolean.

I figure since I am trying to use myBranch.firstChild.nodeValue that flash,
at compile time, can see I am trying to set a string to a property typed as
a Number, so what's going on?

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash webcam sites ...

2006-11-15 Thread greg h

I am kind of surprised that no one else replied on Stephen's "Flash webcam
sites ..." post last month.

I am posting the following link from Grant Skinner as an addendum to the
list I had posted off of incomplet.gskinner.com. This new link technically
is not a webcam application (seeing how it includes media vans, red screens,
masking, etc) but we did see much of it first using webcams :-) Here is
the addendum link:
www.gskinner.com/blog/archives/2006/11/camera_interact.html

Also, anyone who got to MAX and checked out the
IntroNetworksapplication
may have seen its "Create a Video" option for using Flash with a
webcam for capturing up to 30-second video. This certainly qualifies as an
example of a community site using Flash webcam.

Lastly, 2 weeks ago Chris Benjaminsen posted the following link here at
FlashCoders for his FREE Flash 8 webcam component:
http://parentnode.org/uncategorized/free-webcam-based-barcode-scanner-component/

Does anyone have any other Flash webcam sites they can add to the list?

The problem is in how the FLVs are encoded. You have to encode with

Re: [Flashcoders] Strange XML problems

2006-11-15 Thread Christopher Whiteford

The issue it seems is how you are using your folder structure. I noticed
when I took out the media/ from the lessonXML.load("media/eLesson_player.xml");
that the flash loaded the xml properly but in your html you have the html
loading it from media/eLessonPlayerv0.1.swf so when the html page loads the
flash piece it is looking for the xml in media/media dir. I would guess that
is where your issue lies.

That's a great idea! I zipped up the entire folder and uploaded it here:

There are 2 xmls, one for testing in flash and one for testing in the
browser...this is because of the folder structure. Just to forewarn you, the
script might be a bit of a mess..this is only my second AS project :)
Thanks for your help!

Well with _lockroot you can still access _level0 and _parent vars and I
know
that it is frowned upon but you could try using some _global variables as
well perhaps, to see if that makes a difference. The problem with working
in flash versus using browsers is the timing. I have had issues just
between
the timing of how a movie loads for a different browser, and as you are
experiencing it drove me pretty mad.

I guess I am lucky as I have access to a mac and a pc which in cases like
this make it a bit easier to get to the _root of the issue...(pun
intended)

Can you post this somewhere where I could test it real quick? as without
looking at your code it is pretty tough to guess where exactly the issue
is
and to at least see it might be helpful.

Pete, I'm an idiot. I checked again if the datagrid was populated
before the selectedIndex was called. It wasn't... Now it is and it
works... Thanks.

[Flashcoders] Q:Dynamically scale(reduce) imported gifs WITHOUT jaggies

2006-11-15 Thread moveup
Hi
Anyone have any tricks up their sleeves to improve/maintain the quality of gifs
that are dynamically scaled after being loaded into your movie??

I don't want to have to resort to using pngs, since these exact same gifs will
also be loaded into the html page...

Any suggestions welcome...

Re: [Flashcoders] Strange XML problems

2006-11-15 Thread bruce
That's a great idea! I zipped up the entire folder and uploaded it here:
www.bruzed.com/testcases/eLesson player copy.zip (it's 12mb)
There are 2 xmls, one for testing in flash and one for testing in the
browser...this is because of the folder structure. Just to forewarn you, the
script might be a bit of a mess..this is only my second AS project :)
Thanks for your help!

[Flashcoders] problems with dataGrid.selectedIndex

2006-11-15 Thread Carl Welch

Oi!

I have built a mp3 player using xml to give me all of my links to
files, data, etc...
The data loads into a datgrid.
One of the requirements I needed to meet was to be able use a url
query-string to directly link to a mp3 to play on load: exampe:

http://mysite/audio.php?titleid=10&trackid=71

This works fine. But I also need to hilite the correct row in the
datagrid when I use the query-string when the swf loads. Here's what
I'm using:

songList_lb.selectedIndex = myTrack_Pos;
songList_lb.dispatchEvent({type:"change", target:songList_lb});

It seems like selectedIndex will only work if the user has already
clicked on the datagrid. But I want a row to be selected when the swf
loads before the user has had a chance to select anything...

I hope I am making sense. Thanks.

[Flashcoders] looking for slide player plus audio application

2006-11-15 Thread Eric S. Johansson
forgive me if this is the wrong forum but I am looking to find a
flash-based application (or any other for that matter) that can display
open office impress slides in webpages and play an audio track with each
slide. I would prefer something that dealt with each slide as an atomic
element and when the slide audio track finished playing, it would move
to the next image.

It would be nice to have a thermometer showing how much audio is left
but other than that, real simple. Show a slide, play an audio track,
and you don't even have to detect when the viewer has fallen asleep out
of boredom. :-)

I know about raccoon show and it seems like it has gone the way of the
great auk. The other thing I didn't care for was the fact that it used
a continuous audio stream and you gave it time markers. I may do okay
in front of a crowd while giving a talk but I can't create an audio
track that goes for an hour without making a few mistakes.

My budget for this is as close to zero as possible because it's for an
open-source project.

So if there are any suggestions for a web presentation tool via flash or
some other environment, I would love to hear about it.

Not that I've seen, at least not for largescale audiences. Here's some
of the context:

-- The audit methodology is to take regular online consumer focus
groups, and ask them to view a dozen or so different pages, each with a
different type or version of simple content. Each additional viewing
page causes some testers to stop, potentially skewing the result. Bottom
line is that there's a practical limit on how many test pages can be used.

-- The results are useful as a general guideline, but do not apply
directly to any particular website. Use these stats to look at trends
across all consumers, not as a predictor for the audience to a specific
site.

With that context, if you're looking to determine specific minor
versions for a particular site's audience, you can use your own server
logs and/or any versioning test you include on that one site.

More generally speaking, you can use the overall web norms, and the
periods between different Player releases, to do a general estimate of
how much time people had to install a particular old minor version... if
a version was only available for three months before being replaced by a
version which was current for six months, then the latter would have
higher current viewership.

But even more generally, nearly the entire web is turning over its Adobe
Flash Player capabilities each year now, and they always get the latest
version when they update. Unless you're dealing with a bound audience
(like an intranet without administrative privileges), then audiences
with old capabilities are getting smaller and smaller, as the overall
adoption rate continues to rocket forward.

Does this give you the info needed to bring this project forward...?

Honestly that sounds like a strange issue. What about IE do you have the
same problems there?

Have you tried just setting the values in the main flash as _root vars and
then just trying to access them from the various loaded swfs?

Re: [Flashcoders] Strange XML problems

2006-11-15 Thread bruce
I know! And it's extremely frustrating because everything seems to work when I
run it in flash.
I'm on a mac...tested it with FF, Safari and mac IE. It doesn't work on any.
I'm using _lockroot for the external SWF's so that the components inside them
work properly...not sure I can access the main flash _root vars that way...is
there another way I should do that?

Honestly that sounds like a strange issue. What about IE do you have the
same problems there?

Have you tried just setting the values in the main flash as _root vars and
then just trying to access them from the various loaded swfs?

Actualy you can iterate through the variables of a movieclip
(including the instance names of child movieclips) with a for..in loop
and test for their type and class (see typeof and instanceof), but
putting the checkbox references into an array when you create them and
iterating through this array later seems to be far more elegant.

[Flashcoders] swf and referring domain

Is there a way to find the domain of the page that loads my swf. For
example, someone embeds an swf served from my server on their
www.myspace.com page. Is there is way for me to
determine that the request is coming from myspace.com at runtime?

A search of the archive revealed this thread that describes exactly the
problem that I am facing but I didn't see any solution.

I have the option of using AS 3 if it provides a solution.

[Flashcoders] Multiple FLV files playing as only one

Hi,

Is there any way to play multiple FLV files in sequence
as if they are only one, with only one "visual buffer"?

The sound will be a separated random file.
The FLV and sound file names will be on a XML file.

RE: [Flashcoders] Best hardware for Flash

2006-11-15 Thread Joe Cutting

>>
I have neither of these, but my feeling is that you're over-thinking it.
Computers are cheap enough that even spending a small amount of money on a
'generically decent' machine should yield something that will work well as a
dedicated kiosk.
>>
Hmm, I think this used to be the case but actually several things are
muddying the waters
- "Generically decent" business PCs tend to come these days with fast
processors but rather low spec

graphics and not all of them have expansion slots
- If you want decent graphics you tend to have to buy a "gaming
system" which from the likes of Dell can push the price up a lot
- The advent of dual processor systems has also meant that those
decent PCs tend to come with a dual processor chip with a fairly low
clock speed. Great for running several applications at once -
probably not really the best way of running Flash
- If you're in the kiosk game there's a lot of pressure to use small
form factor PCs. These tend to be difficult to expand and don't have
good graphics either.
If you're going to use one of these it would be nice to know exactly
how much you're sacrificing.

For what its worth, these days I tend to go for a HP Athlon based
Tower model with lots of expansion ports and then put a mid range
nVidia graphics

card in it. Seems to go pretty well but I haven't done a lot of comparisions.

Cheers

May be I'm not understanding your problem properly, but using
labelFunction you can display value for each row, and these values can
be results of any complex calculation. Creating a custom
cell-renderer is similar in this respect. If I get something wrong,
could you provide a concrete sample case?

Each DataGridColumn supports a label function, and a cell renderer. For

RE: [Flashcoders] Widescreen displays

2006-11-15 Thread Mike Mountain
It depends on your display really. If you can code your apps to be
liquid, using Stage properties to turn off scaling and aligning to to
left then it should work in any res.

Problem comes in the differences between plasmas and LCD's and HD ready
plasmas

Your average LCD will have a true widescreen Pixel aspect ration (as
will most HD ready plasmas) - whereas most other plasmas will display at
1024x768.

If you want a one size fits all approach then your best bet is to
implement a _level0 squasher and produce all your work in widescreen
16:9 - then if you need to author for a stretched 1024x768 plasma - you
can "pre squash" your flash content in code on the _root which will then
be "restretched" on the plasma to give true aspect ratio on a stretched
pixel display.

Hope you get my gist, it's tricky to explain.

Cheers

RE: [Flashcoders] Gradients (not a coding question)

2006-11-15 Thread Holth, Daniel C.

I'm not familiar with Illustrator's Make Compound Object feature, but you could
try bringing the text in as an image, doing a very high quality 'trace bitmap'
then filling the new vector graphic with a gradient.

Hi list...

Is there a Flash equivalent to Illustrator's Make Compound Object
feature? I have some Illustrator text that I converted to paths, and
brought in to Flash. I'd like one radial gradient to span over all the
letters. I know I can do this with a mask, but is there simpler way,
thus avoiding a mask?

All right. Your data are stored as some kind of array, presumably? So you're
drawing lines from one point to another. So what you need is a system for
selecting an area of the graph, converting it to a region of x-values,
recalculating the corresponding y-values and putting them into the array.
Then you'll redraw your graph to give the final result, yes?

So: selection: on mouseDown, store the x-position. On enterFrame, look for
the current x-position and draw a nice semi-transparent rectangle over your
graph in the appropriate position. On mouseUp, find the leftmost x-position
and convert to an x-value in your array, and the same for the rightmost
x-value. This gives you a start and finish point for your recalculation.
Calculate your values, redraw the graph and you're done.

Any help?

Re: [Flashcoders] Complex objects in a DataProvider

2006-11-15 Thread Mark Hawley
The properties of the objects I wished to display were dynamic and
hidden behind method calls. There was no sensible way to expose them as
getters. I could not use labelFunction because I wished to populate each
row of my DataGrid with the results of various method calls on a single
object, and labelFunction builds a label in a single cell.

Why don't you use getter properties in your objects or
DataGridColumn.labelFunction?

[Flashcoders] removing a bunch of checkboxes in a movieClip

2006-11-15 Thread Chris Aernoudt

Hi,

I've got this thing with a bunch of checkboxes created through
createClassObject sitting in a movieclip.
Problem is, I don't know how to get rid of them once I'm done with them
(they're based on filtered data, so I need to update them).
Of course there's destroyObject(), but that only works with the id of the
object?

Can I iterate through the checkboxes in the movieclip and delete them all?

TIA,
Chris.

Re: [Flashcoders] Letting go of AS2 for AS3

2006-11-15 Thread Simon
The main class file is ... well the main class. You can define it like David
said. (file -> publish settings -> and so on). It's not a special kind of
class, it's just a normal one that has to extend MovieClip.

This main class , when you choose to use it, will be constructed first, it's
the entrypoint into the application. Just make sure it extends MovieClip or
else it won't work...

I've seen in Flash9 that with File>Publish settings>Flash>ActionsScript

I tryed quickly to build an app with it, but it didn't start... sorry to

Any tips you can provide from general to specific would be a huge help.

Which bit are you having trouble with? Plotting the data? Selecting areas?
Passing info back to the user? Replotting the graph?

I have neither of these, but my feeling is that you're over-thinking it.
Computers are cheap enough that even spending a small amount of money on a
'generically decent' machine should yield something that will work well as a
dedicated kiosk. No point trying to squeeze a few pennies into this card
rather than that one (or not on the basis of 'how well it works with Flash',
anyway). Just buy the best machine you can afford. If you want speed
optimisations, I can absolutely guarantee you'll achieve more by improving
your code than by messing with hardware. And if you can't, then you're
running something that probably shouldn't be in Flash in the first place -
you need to switch to something faster.
