[Flashcoders] Creating Cross-Platform CDROM

2009-10-22 Thread Paul Steven
Been a long time since I have had to make a cross platform CDROM, or even a
CDROM at all to be honest. Anyway I have developed a series of educational
games with Flash CS3, with the main packaged file packaged with MDM Zinc (to
enable me to have a coloured background outside the stage area).

I would appreciate any advice on the best way to create a cross platform
CDROM. Can I create this on the PC or do I need to purchase Toast for the
Mac to do this?

Thanks in advance

fine (as Karl suggests).

Not that I've found yet...

But to be honest, however much of the build/disk creation process I've
managed to automate on the PC (and on Ubuntu), I've always found it's
necessary to go to the Mac for some of the process (notably DMG
creation - can't find a decent tool for that on PC - and application
of background images etc. to a Mac disk image). If you're serious
about distributing for a Mac, then you need a Mac.

(For testing, if nothing else!)

Thanks for all the swift replies.

I have a Mac Mini so burning on the Mac is an option. I was under the
impression there would be a different executable file for each platform, the
only other files are swf files that are loaded into this main container
movie executable.

Sounds like it may be possible to do this on the Mac without the need for
Toast. If this is the case, then do I need to just copy the pc exe file to
the Mac?

Thanks

Sorry to interject, but you have to export an EXE for PC and a

and then you can burn those to a CD and both platforms will be able

I thought you were just talking about having the disk read.

 this mean that both would be visible on both platforms?

Just using standard burning options, yes. Which isn't necessarily a
problem, as long as your users are fairly savvy, but is at the least
untidy!

The important thing about Hybrid CDs is that some files are hidden
from one platform, and some from another (although some can be shared
across both).

Typically, for example, we include Windows autorun.exe and Setup.exe
visible only to Windows, an AIR file visible to both platforms, and
the Mac AIR installer visible only to the Mac.

 Hi,

   I used CD Everywhere for the PC to create a Cross Platform project.

   http://www.i2rd.com/CDEveryWhere/faq.shtml

   It works on Windows, you can create a CDROM with the free
 version, I think it leaves something on the disk, but should not
 affect your app.

   I have a link at home to a really good doc for this - will post

RE: [Flashcoders] Flashplayer install on IE8 / Vista

2009-10-22 Thread Andrew Murphy
This was a problem for me as well, in Firefox on WinXP.

I was on Facebook and when I tried to play a TopGear video it asked me to
update my player.. I had been using a debug v10 player, but the previous
release. I was taken to the Adobe site, clicked on an install it now
button and suddenly I was installing the Adobe download manager and, without
even asking me or giving me the ability to cancel, it installed McAfee
antivirus scanner as well.

The one thing I wanted, the updated plugin, never installed. Probably
because I, in irritation, killed the download manager and then wasted my
time uninstalling it and McAfee.

I ended up downloading a new version of the debug plugin and installing from
my hard drive.

Not exactly a great end-user experience.

Re: [Flashcoders] Converting .swf playback to .mov

2009-10-22 Thread Jim McIntyre
This does work just fine with CS4, scripted animation and all. A couple
of tips:

- Export the movie at 100% size. I've found the exporter does a lousy
job of scaling. If you need to scale the output, use minimal QT
compression, then use a tool like MPEG Streamclip or ffmpeg to scale and
compress the final QT files.

- Remember: Unless you've told it to stop at a particular timecode, the
exporter will play the movie until it reaches the end of the timeline.
Therefore, if there's a loop or stop action in the timeline, the
exporter will *never* reach the end of the timeline, and the export
process will hang.

Ok, I'm well aware of the limitation in exporting an .fla to quicktime. You
only get the main timeline, no sub clips or scripted animation. What I'm
asking is if there's some new product on the market that has tackled this
issue successfully. So far is looks like a screen reader is the way to go,
I'd just like to get some alpha (key) control over the output that doesn't
require me recording it over a green background.

[Flashcoders] Inheritance and Static properties

2009-10-22 Thread Helmut Granda
So I understand that I can access static properties only child-parent but
not if we instantiate the subclass some where else within the application
but what would be the best way to go around this?
-ButtonParent -contains basic rollover/rollout/click events and does
dispatchEvent (new Event (BUTTON_CLICK));
-Children inherit ButtonParent and I want to be able to listen for the event
and also get the Name of the child.

var button1 : ButtonParent = new Child();

button1.addEventListener (Child.BUTTON_CLICK, doClickStuff) // of course
wont work because we cant access the static constants from child

button1.addEventListener (ButtonParent.BUTTON_CLICK, doClickStuff)// this
works but now I cant access the NAME from the child

private function doClickStuff ( event : Event ) : void
{
trace(event.target )// Child
trace(event.NAME)// undefined

}

// here is some more about the child

public class Child extends ButtonParent extends IButton
{
 public static const NAME : String = ChildName;
}

Any ideas or recommendations?

I did get around the issue but not using static constants for the
BUTTON_CLICK constant and just setting it up as a public var

button1.addEventListener ( button1.BUTTON_CLICK, doClickStuff)// now this
works but looks such an ugly hack.

  but what would be the best way to go around this?
  -ButtonParent -contains basic rollover/rollout/click events and does
  dispatchEvent (new Event (BUTTON_CLICK));
  -Children inherit ButtonParent and I want to be able to listen for the
  event
  and also get the Name of the child.

  var button1 : ButtonParent = new Child();

  button1.addEventListener (Child.BUTTON_CLICK, doClickStuff) // of course
  wont work because we cant access the static constants from child

  button1.addEventListener (ButtonParent.BUTTON_CLICK, doClickStuff)// this
  works but now I cant access the NAME from the child

  private function doClickStuff ( event : Event ) : void
  {
  trace(event.target )// Child
  trace(event.NAME)// undefined

  }

  // here is some more about the child

  public class Child extends ButtonParent extends IButton
  {
   public static const NAME : String = ChildName;
  }

  TIA

[Flashcoders] getting information about other application window with adobe air?

2009-10-22 Thread Sidnei Vladisauskis
Hi,

I need develop a desktop application, which needs get some information about
a specific window of the other application, like name of window, size and
position.

I thought to use adobe air to develop it, but It doesn't has this
functionality, I can get just the size of screen.

Who knows some way to do this?
Some wrapper able to get external information from the system or something
like that?

Thanks
