[Flashcoders] v2 Dataset component with Schema and Binding in code, and itemClass

2007-10-24 Thread Kalani Bright
Does any have/know of any tutorials or samples which go over creating
datasets, schemas, binding, and itemClasses (itemClassName) completely and
entirely in code. The samples Macromedia provides are pretty light and I
can't find any serious samples/tutorials online.

Does anyone know of any?

Thanks,

RE: [Flashcoders] Cell renderers in AS 3 UI Data Grid

2007-07-26 Thread Kalani Bright
Aloha John,

Check this out. It will help you understand cellrenderers.

http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=B4AED

CellRenderers are a bit confusing at first glance but once you understand UI
components they get less so. Really you can have anything you want in a
cell. Just createChildren the instances...
(createClassObject or createObject)

There was also something in the documentation which linked to a page which
didn't exist but if you take that title and do a search on the internet for
it you'll find some downloadable examples. Sorry for being vague here but
I'm actually on my way out the door.

Anyway the article link above explains everything you should need.

Aloha,

Kalani

Subject: [Flashcoders] Cell renderers in AS 3 UI Data Grid

Hi List,

Has anyone tried to have a column use a combo box inside a cell in a
AS3 data grid? I've done a fair amount of searching help and livedocs and
can't find any clear examples of how to do this. I believe I'd need to
attach a cellRenderer to the column I'd like to use and write a class for
it. The class would extend combo box and whatever I define to be in the
instance of the combo box will magically appear in the cell. Does this sound
right?

Cheers,

John

[Flashcoders] ActionScript 2.0 TileList component?

2007-07-25 Thread Kalani Bright
Hi,

I'm trying to solve a specific problem (using AS 2.0). I'm trying to avoid
some coding.
A DataGrid won't do what I want (to lay out the rows in tile formation).
I'm also using custom
CellRenderers.

Seems AS 3.0 has exactly what I need (the TileList) except for all the other
components I need which have gone missing.

Is anyone aware of a component which displays thing in a TileList way but
also has all the goodies of Flash's list based components (CellRenderers)
and usage of DataProviders?

Help? My vision is going black!

Mahalo,

Kalani

Hey,

Since you folks were so incredibly helpful last time I threw out a silly
question, I thought I'd toss out another... =)

The other replies to my previous thread (+Inifinite Loop -Dignity) triggered
a couple AS optimization hints, which I will be using! So I was wondering if
the kind mister Kremens was correct in stating that shorter variable names
aid in speeding up AS code. Fine, fine, he said he was joking, but I do
remember a reading document about optimizing C++ programs saying the same
thing.

Is there a good resource I can go to for reading up on AS code optimization?
Do practices from lower-level languages like C++ even apply in a language
like ActionScript? Am I smoking something I shouldn't be?

I love you all.

RE: [Flashcoders] Flash CS3 Prof copy: missing Tree component.

2007-06-01 Thread Kalani Bright
Thats funny. Adobe has put the axe to the tree component and many other
components requiring you to use Flex if you want to use them.
Adobe's reign of terror and the rise of the Anti-Flash...Flex.

First they came for the Accordion
and I did not speak out
because I did not use the Accordion.
Then they came for the Menu & MenuBar
and I did not speak out
because I did not use them.
Then they came for the Alert, DateChooser, DateField, and Window
and I did not speak out
because I was didn't use them very much
Then they came for my Tree
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

RE: [Flashcoders] AS3... when to start?

2007-03-04 Thread Kalani Bright

I don't know about FDT or what that was based on.
I know Adobe purchased a company which produced Eclipse related plugins such
as JSEclipse.
Which probably is how they got Flex Builder built so fast.

As far as Flex goes verything can be done in Flash.
If you have an ounce of artist in you please avoid Flex.
Flex is somewhat the equivalent of visual studio .net's ide. Drag and drop
components onto the stage.
It's a boring sort of deal...more interesting than other technologies...but
not flash + code. But yes it is faster.

But I use Flex Builder 2 in conjuction with Flash and avoid Flex altogether.

RE: [Flashcoders] AS3... when to start?

2007-03-03 Thread Kalani Bright

I always thought the flash as editor is horrible. I've always used external
tools such as PrimalScript to code my apps and now I use Flex Builder 2. I
use the apps in conjuction with each other and I still put create items
visually in flash and have items in movieclips (defined as classes...pointed
to the class files built in Flex Builder). It's more of a balanced
approached to coding, graphics, and animation then going all out code or all
out graphics. (And I don't use Flex, don't believe in it.) I love the
code hinting, instantly accessible help, and auto creation of some of the
things when you create a file or override a superclasse's methods. It's so
nice having things similiar to whats available for other serious languages
finally, and having a full IDE for coding and another for animation and all
the other which work together.

For things like animating a website header...why would you want to animate
that programmatically? It would only make sense to code something which was
going to be used more than once or for something that wouldn't be possible
just using normal flash. As far as the differences of AS2 and AS3 and Flash
don't concern yourself with them. However I think everyone serious about
Flash should be starting to learn AS3. It's going to take over development
over the next couple of years...better to learn the new stuff then the older
stuff especially since AS3 and AS2 are not compatible within the same FLA if
they perform any cross scripting.

Of course you are going to get lots of opinions which way is the right way
to do things, and they are all going to be different. These are mine.

Subject: [Flashcoders] AS3... when to start?

Hi all,

I just picked-up Actionscript 3.0 Cookbook (O'Reilly) today, and found
myself pondering this:

Is it time to make the switch from v2 to v3 AS?

Third paragraph states:

"This book assumes that you have obtained a copy of Flex Builder 2 and have
successfully installed it on your computer. ... "

What happened to coding in Flash? Am I waiting for the next version of Flash
until I can successfully and/or easily write AS3 via the Flash application?
Will the future of Flash AS always require the Flex Builder? Or, is Flex
Builder just one out of many/few code editors for compiling the new AS3
code?

If I only want to animate some objects around the stage programatically (for
something like a website header), should I just make the switch to
AS3 (if player versions were not an issue), or is AS2 still an acceptable
way of producing small action-scripted movies?

Sorry if my thinking and/or questions are noobish... Hehe, I am just trying
to put the pieces together.

Links? Blog posts? Articles? Am I over-complicating things?

Please advise. :)

Tia!
Cheers,
Micky

Naive little man... you don't have to sell it for it to be pirated.

Piracy: The unauthorized reproduction or use of a copyrighted book,

It's possible and common.

My opinion is use . Why mess with all that other junk (I've never
liked AMF)? Database > Web Service > XML > Flash or in reverse for whatever
purpose. You can create a node like class that extends movieclip with xml
functionality which knows about it's children and passes the xml on to them
for them to parse and initialize their children, and their childrens
children if that makes sense.

I have played a little, but it has an API which allows you to talk to the

I have sent you an invite - you don't have to use it if you don't want, but

RE: [Flashcoders] as3 book

2007-02-28 Thread Kalani Bright

Hi Gustavo,

There are several great changes with AS3. But nothing I can tell so far
with Flash 9 IDE except that the Alpha's version is all messed up.
I would advise thinking on both ends because an artist/programmer can do
anything with flash.

If you are looking for more of an art introduction to flash check out some
of the training at http://www.cartoonsmart.com . It's more of a general
introduction rather than version specific though there are some flash 8
things there.

RE: [Flashcoders] Getting frustrated. regarding set Interval, and for loop.

2007-02-28 Thread Kalani Bright
You can use a singleton. It's just important that the intervals be managed
in a single location.
_root can be used by as1 or as2 programmers. AS3 supports a document class
and support for inner classes which means (through some creative
engineering) singletons as well, no need for root.

1) setInterval is not accurate. Try moving the window around and see if the
function gets called when it's supposed to. Keep a timer and compare the
interval call to the time over say a minute to 2 minute period. You could
be off by several or more seconds, and if you move the window around like
crazy your 1 second interval could be called 7 seconds later.
2) Create your own class which does this.
3) onEnterFrame to check intervals (in a singleton) or single instance
class, or root!
4) Even with a reference to the interval the interval may not always be
deleted. Sorry, it's not. Do some tests. This is especially the case if
you use delegates with your setinterval. The management problem for
performance gets even worse. Making sure you delete and clear everything.
But in my experience the intervals don't clear like they should even went
set to self-destruct.
5) The 3 parameter setinterval call is not for scope, its for the object
containing the method you want to call, if thats what you meant by scope.
The object could be removed and the interval continue to be called.
6) Why go through all this headache when you can easily write your own
interval class which is accurate and deletes itself when told?

*regards*
Kalani

As a posted last week or something, there's a few things to keep in mind
when using setInterval

- clear interval before setting it
- always use this syntax setInterval(scope, "method", interval)
- and never use this syntax setInterval(function, interval)
- keep a reference to the interval
- remove it when done

2007-02-28 Thread Kalani Bright
Always a pleasure having intellegent people prove me wrong.
I'd rather be proved wrong by a singleton rather than a simpleton.

My only comment is that setinterval doesn't fire accurately. If the user is
moving the window for example the interval function will never get called.
I like your manager but I still would use a timer.

When I was using AS2 I found that no matter what there were always memory
leaks with set interval and even after I explicitly tell Flash to remove the
interval it never got removed...

So even though I never wrote it I would offer the following advice, which is
to *almost* not use setInterval at all. Just use it once, for the root...
1) Move all functionality for intervals to a script on the root
2) The root is always available, and you won't have intervals all over the
place
3) Create only one interval for a function on the root which is responsible
for calling functions
4) The function should get the same sort of information as whats required by
setInterval.
5) Call functions based on the timer. Time since movie started. A little
math should test if the objects which are registered with your script should
be called again. I would also recommend enabling this function to support
something like "call this function X times every 1000 ms). Rather than
call this object every 1000ms. That way you can delete it automatically if
its reached that number.
6) That script keeps information on what intervals are set
7) The script periodically checks for objects which no longer exists and
deletes them from the interval array.
8) Intervals are set or removed by calling a root function. Use the
delegate class to say which function gets the interval callback and also
pass a reference to the object.

Good luck,

Kalani

[Flashcoders] Flash 9 AS3 Resource Management

2007-02-28 Thread Kalani Bright
Hi everyone,

Does anyone have some tips or tutorials on how to handle resources and
performance issues in flash.

I have more of an application than a flash file and things start to slow
down after a while. I'm thinking the garbage collection mechanism in flash
isn't deleting the objects which aren't needed anymore.
I was able to improve performance somewhat by overriding addEventListener to
put the event listener into an array of objects which I then reference
values from. When a SuperMovieClip object is removed from the stage an
event listener for that event goes through the array and removes each of the
listeners. If it is added to the stage again all the listeners are re-added
from the array.

Theres some other slow downs I can't account for. It would be nice if there
was a debugging tool or something so I could see what types of objects are
in memory at any time so I can see whats not getting deleted and what keeps
taking up resources. I am especially interested in however strategies for
dealing with the issues of instantiation, deletion, events, for resource
optimization.

Thank you, thank you, (thank you)

RE: [Flashcoders] Right Click disabling

2007-02-28 Thread Kalani Bright

Hi Andy,

This will drive you wild until you're living with the lions in Africa. Save
yourself. It's not possible especially in a .swf. They removed that
possibility in flash 5 or 6.

I even tried putting in in a C# windows application with complicated
scripting to toggle a layer above it and faking mouse events that I wanted
to send. I found you can't send fake events to flash. You would need
access to the unmanaged code area (for other readers). It's especially not
possible with a swf or an application unless that application is a Zinc app
or if you shell out some big moolah to Adobe for a special license (but
won't work for a swf either).

Come back, Andy, come back into the light...it's not worth it really.

Kalani

Hi,

I know this has been done to death but nothing has answered my real problem.
I need to turn off the right click menu completely in a swf.
I don't want it to display custom stuff (I can do that), I want it to detect
a right click but not show the menu. This can only be in a swf, not an exe
so the compilers don't work.

Please help - this has been driving me wild!

[Flashcoders] MOUSE_DOWN & CLICK are not firing on the first mouse click (Flash 9)

2007-02-23 Thread Kalani Bright
*I Dont need help I was writing this and I figured it out so I'm posting it
so that other people don't run into the same issue *
The error was caused because I had a bunch of text on the stage evidently
causing some sort of memory issue probably due to anti-aliasing or something
.. though flash 8 could have handled it fine. This caused mouse events not
to be triggered when they should have been. The flash 9 developers are
probably still working out the kinks.

Original writing :

This one is puzzling me.
There seems to be some trouble with the either the event model or something
I can't explain.

So theres a button and you click on it. Except the first time you click on
it it doesn't register the event (the event listener is set in a superclass
via a method call). The method is called in the child classes constructor.
So it should be listening for t

so if you wait a second or two and don't move the mouse the click then
registers. If you move the mouse around a bit the click also registers.
Anyone know whats going on?

That works in one direction (rollOver on the lower button being lost when
rolling onto the upper one) but fails on the other (rollOver on the upper
button disabling rollOver on the lower one). You have to have some means of
passing the event through to the hidden button.

Keep a list of all the instances you're testing, in z-order. Use onRollOver
to activate each one; then while it's active, send messages to all the ones
beneath it to check if they should be active too.

RE: [Flashcoders] [ANN] AS3 Effects Framework

2007-02-07 Thread Kalani Bright
I'm not famililar with your project but here are some suggestiosn.

Well bubble in bubble out. Imagine bubbles coming in.

The most simple and classy is a fade in fade out.
Also a brightness in/out.

You also might want to allow the coder to specify a movieclip to use as a
mask for a transition. Say you scale that mask up inside until everything
is displayed as an in...

Theres so many possiblities. I'd say just start with whats in
powerpoint..look around to see what others are doing, and do what you're
already doing..asking others.

Take care,

Kalani

Guys I am creating an effects framework, something similar to scriptaculous.
It is gonna be simple easy to use. What I am looking for is suggestions of
what effects you guys would like included in it. Here's what I got so far:
Blind In
Blind Out
Slide Left In
Slide Left Out
Slide Right In
Slide Right Out
Scale Grow
Scale Shrink

Let me know what else you guys want. Its going to be a real basic framework,
tiny and easy to use.

RE: [Flashcoders] var (eventHandler)

2007-02-07 Thread Kalani Bright
you shouldn't var any functions even though technically that is correct.

also anything withoug a access keyword is defaulted to private which means
you can only access it from the class.

so to answer your question

public function onEnterFrame():Void
{
//code here
}
The void means you are not using a return.
if you are doing actionscript 1.0 then technically that is okay...

so something like

var myFunction = function ()
{
//code here
}

is what you should be using but that is 1.0 and not for classes.

Okay, I'm guessing it's a stupid question, so I'll get over it asap.
I've never written a custom class before, and have recently started to code
things in Flash which are much more complex, approaching application status,
so I'm trying to wwrap my head around all of this OOP stuff. I keep running
into something that I can't get though...
using the VAR keyword when declaring event handlers, like this example from
Object-Oriented Actionscript for Flash 8:

var onEnterFrame:Function = doSomething;

I've Googled my [EMAIL PROTECTED] off, and I can't get it to save my life, and
this seemed

Ok, I see by your face you think I'm crazy.

But I wandered across this project called DENG today:

It is able to render all types of content (including tables!) and SVG inside
of Flash. I think the SVG rendered came from somewhere else.

Anyway. Its for flash MX. And I'm using Flash 9. Is anyone aware of
something more recent.

To interactively scale/rotate/move any MoveClip in an intuitive way at
runtime in a manner similar to modern-day graphics applications like
Photoshop and Illustrator, feel free to use my TransformManager class:

http://www.greensock.com/ActionScript/TransformManager/

There's an interactive sample there. I put a lot of time into attempting to
making it user-friendly and relatively intuitive, but I haven't tested it
extensively yet so your comments/suggestions are welcome. It should handle
just about any MovieClip regardless of where the registration point is, etc.

Hope it helps.

I am creating a 'clip-art' type illustration application. users will have
the ability to move, rotate and scale movielip objects they drag from a

I'd like to allow interactive scaling and rotating via dragging the bounding
box (as well as thru a slider), but am not sure how to first proceed.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, either pseudo-code or an
existing example online?

[Flashcoders] Sitepal, Security Sandbox, and AS3.0

2007-01-25 Thread Kalani Bright
Aloha Everyone,

I'm having problems getting SitePal to work with AS 3.0 code. It works fine
in 2.0 code with loadmovie.

In 3.0 I used the standard urlRequest and loader and did the security domain
stuff like 2.0.

However I end up with nothing though I do see its contacting the server.
Just and empty space no character.
So I figured what if I created a container swf in 2.0 code then loaded that
into 2.0. Then I get errors about the security context although I set both
the 2.0 swf container and the 3.0 code to allow the remote domain. It works
when I'm loading any simple 2.0 swf. But I think the heavy scripting of the
sitepal is doesn't something funy.

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone got this to work?

Below is what I get when I load a sitepal character from a 2.0 script
running inside a 3.0 script. Again, I get no errors when loading it
directly from the 3.0 script but it doesn't work.

*** Security Sandbox Violation ***

tried to access incompatible context
'file:///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/Administrator/My%20Documents/Flex%20B
uilder%202/ColorFun/ColorFun.swf'

I know there are issues with cross scripting from 2.0 to 3.0. What I'm not
clear on is if this includes swfs which are 2.0 that are loading 2.0 but are
included in 3.0 are included in this category. But by the results I'm
pretty certain thats the case and I can't use Sitepal in any way shape or
form with AS3.0. :(

Help? Thanks,

RE: [Flashcoders] Capturing FMS video streams from multiple cameras

2007-01-05 Thread Kalani Bright
I'm pretty sure it is capable of allowing the user to select which camera is
used...but I don't know how to do it in code.
You might want to look up the Camera object in the directory.

In any case the user can select which camera to use:
Right-click the Flash file.
Choose Settings.
Click the Camera tab (the fourth and last tab).
Choose the desired camera from the dropdown list.
Click Close.
Refresh the page to restart the Flash file.

RE: [Flashcoders] getters and setters and the "with" statement

2007-01-04 Thread Kalani Bright
Found this regarding with and MTASC
http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/viewtopic.php?p=4283

Like I said, at least to me..with is pretty useless. You can't refer to
other variables or objects with "with" inside the withstatement so a = b is
not possible if a and b aren't already part of the "with" object, can't be
another object. Code with with is confusing. Even common sentences are
confusing with with :) Its better to write it out or copy/paste. If its a
long namespace or objects within other objects just store it by reference to
a short variable name and access it throught the variable.

Does MTASC support the with statement...? I'm not sure but I guess the last
time I tried to compile an AS2 class with "with" statements, MTASC didn't
like it at all... of course, it doesn't mean I like it less... MMC is awful

RE: [Flashcoders] getters and setters and the "with" statement

2007-01-03 Thread Kalani Bright

Hi chris,

with is used so you don't have to constantly refer to a object hierarchy or
object when you are changing many properties or running many methods.

var myObject:CustomObjectType = new CustomObjectType();
//say that custom object has a property named duration and two methods start
and ping.

with(myObject)
{
duration = 5.5;
start();
ping("test.com");
}

its just so you dont have to do myObject.duration = 5.5 etc...

I've never used with. It's one of the most useless constructs.

RE: [Flashcoders] FlexBuilder/Actionscript 3 Meta Tags

2007-01-02 Thread Kalani Bright

Aloha Greg,

Thanks for your help.

I'm not really looking for the [Inspectable] tag. I'm not using components,
and I'm not authoring in Flex. I'm only using the Flex IDE to construct my
ActionScript classes to be used in Flash 9. I did used to use [inspectable]
when working with components in ActionScript 2.0 code but as I understand it
you can't use components in 3.0 code when using the Flash 9 IDE. Thank you
for trying to find it though...I ran into the same problem when searching
for AS 3.0 Flash 9 meta tags.

I'm going to do some research on Eclipse. It's my belief that the Adobe
team bought out Interakt, who produces eclipse plugins, so that it could
produce Flex Builder, so the answer to my question is probably somewhere
over there. I'll also check the flex coders list. I'll let this list know
if I find out anything.

Thanks,

Kalani

Kalani,

For code hints, I believe you are looking for the [Inspectable] metadata
tag.

[Inspectable] is used by both Flash and Flex components.

For Flash 8, the doc page on [Inspectable] is here:
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/8/main/3033.html

For Flex 2, the doc page on [Inspectable] is here:
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/1658.html
and the doc page listing metadata tags is here:
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/1651.html

Unfortunately, the currently available Flash 9 AS3 Preview
docsdo
not include coverage of metadata tags for components like [Inspectable].

fyi, both of Jim's suggestions are excellent. ASDoc is for creating
LiveDocs style documentation. And the Flexcoders list will likely provide
better support in cases where you are using Flex Builder for authoring ;-)

RE: [Flashcoders] FlexBuilder/Actionscript 3 Meta Tags

2007-01-02 Thread Kalani Bright
Thanks Jim,

AsDoc isn't what I'm looking for but its a nice little easter egg to find.
I wasn't aware of it.
- For the mailing list, ASDoc is a command-line tool that is used to create
HTML documentation from AS and MXML files. The HTML output looks very
similar to the Flex 2 or ActionScript 3 Language Reference. -

I'll try posting on the flex coders list as well though I'm not doing any
Flex programming just using Flex Builder 2 to build my ActionScript classes
for Flash 9.

Thanks for your help,

Kalani

You might want to try the Flexcoders list:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/

Meanwhile, if I understand your question correctly, you might want to look
at ASDoc: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/ASDoc

Subject: [Flashcoders] FlexBuilder/Actionscript 3 Meta Tags

Aloha,

I'm new to this list and looking forward to the support I can give and the
help I can receive.

Anyway, about a week ago I started programming in AS 3.0 in Flex Builder 2.
Now I'm wondering about meta tags and so forth for code hinting.

I would like to enable in the codeing process to provide textual information
in the code completion tooltip.

For example:
if my method is:

/*
 @summary Says hello to someone
@arguments argName The name of the person to say hello to @returns True if
the operation was successful and False if it failed */ public function
sayHello(argName:String):Boolean {
//code here...
}

if I type:
MyClass.sayHello(

rather than seeing sayHello(argName:String):Boolean in the code hinting
window I want to see something like this:

sayHello(argName:String):Boolean
Say hello to someone
TAKES: argString:String - The name of the person to say hello to
RETURNS: True if the operation was successful and False if it failed

Anyone know how to do this. I've searched the net and can't find anything.
Search under flex builder, actionscript, flash, and eclipse for meta tags
and wasn't able to locate a thing except for AS 2.0 components which are
removed from 3.0

I had some of this when I was coding in primalscript and there were meta
tags when I was working with ActionScript 2.0 and components.
Are there any 3.0 meta tags anyone is aware of?

Thanks for your help,
