[Flashcoders] Searching a Tree component

2006-09-14 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor

I'm having a hard time with a tree component that I am synchronizing with an
application data model. I'm trying to figure out how upon someone selecting
a particular element in the model I can make my tree reflect that choice.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial about searching trees in
Flash or something like that.

Thanks,

Mani

Re: [Flashcoders] Cairngorm 2.0 tutorials

2006-08-22 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor

Matti,

I came across the same feeling that I believe you are having when I first
tried it. It's a whole lot and every piece I tugged at seemed to be linked
to another piece of equal importance or at least that could just as
justifiably been a good starting point. In the end I found that if I
started with one of my own views ( say a basic form that I had laid out in
MXML and then looked at the approaches in the tutorials as they related to
my current need it made it more applicable to my situation and I was able to
grab a piece here and there and see it as a good suggestion for a solution.
No matter where you start I think you will get the feeling of "Well then
what the hell does this piece do and do I need to work on it first?"
That being said though I think the article from
devnet
gave me a better sense of I was jumping into and the ActionScript
Dictionary (big red one)
section about design
patterns really helped me put it all together.

Re: [Flashcoders] Treo 650- Does anyone have any good news about getting Flash on there?

I just got my phone through cingular- They had the special on the 650 with
the $200 rebate- need to go try to find a rebate on the other one- If I
can't find that one would you say going with any windows OS smartphone in
hat range would be an ok bet?

I just think I would enjoy my phone way way way more if I could build my own
apps here and there.

I appreciate the feedback by the way (looking for my Treo Box and receipt)

Well, I personally prefer Windows Mobile to PalmOS for various reasons. I
wouldn't go so far as to say it's a "better machine", though. It shouldn't
cost much more, though.

If you just got it, your service provider might let you exchange it for a
Treo 700w, which runs Windows Mobile 5. Flash Player 7 is available for

However keep in mind that if you ever try to raise rates with clients that

Another thing to keep in mind...if clients aren't willing to pay what you
want to make and you know you have value to offer, maybe they're not the
clients for you. I understand the need to put food on the table, but some

First of all, I've found this article extremely interesting:
http://www.blueflavor.com/ed/tips_tricks/pricing_a_project.php

After about 5 months of contracting, here are a few of my own thoughts:

Setting an hourly rate is really tricky! A good way to start is to take
you
current salary, add about 25% for benefits, and divide to get an hourly
rate. Also keep in mind that an hour of contract work is more intense
than
an hour of salaried work because you can't charge for things that aren't
directly related to the project. So I've found that even doing 40 hours
of
billable work in a week is pretty tough.

The price I charge per hour varies slightly from job to job based on a
number of variables, such as how much I want the job, and how difficult it
sounds. Some people have told me my rate is incredibly low, while others
have said it's too high. (Usually the people who say it's too high are
not
from the Bay Area!) Ideally I would like to be charging about 30% more
than
I do right now, but I have chosen to stick with a lower rate because I
want
to get some good jobs under my belt that I can use to build my portfolio
and
reputation.

Brian-
so in that case what's a ballpark for a medium project ( ok I know...what's
a medium project). Say a company needs a componet set for a basic media
player that they will be in turn customizing for their clients and I'm
providing an AS2 mvc based component set- that they can skin and extend and
charge their clients for the end tool.
To ask it directly- what is the ballpark $$ for the numbers that
developers(such as yourself) on the east coast are using to do this math.

I spent a few years as a "lone developer" while I was learning- moved to a
pretty major company and did some time with them and actually came to
realize that my skillset is up there and I have been way undercharging. Now
I'm going to be doing some freelancing and want to make sure that I'm not
going out there as "the idiot pulling prices down"

I don't have a fixed rate for everything I do. If something is a lower

I shy away from doing hourly rates and I do estimates. An estimate is
based
on what I would like to make hourly multiplied by how many hours I think
it

unforeseen obstacles. These days I just set a price and say, "This is

[Flashcoders] Where to politely and appropriately discuss pricing issues

I' read years ago that directly asking pricing in a public forum is gauche
and a good way to get a good flame going. At the same time I quoted
someone a price the other day on my first attempt at freelancing and I could
hear their jaw drop and knew I low-balled my hourly. The problem is that I
have no idea what I should be pricing at with my level of experience and am
not sure the polite way to invite a conversation on this. If anyone is
willing to offlist me and school me as to the etiquette of discussing how
people are setting their prices and what a medium-advanced to advanced Flash
component developer is charging right now I would welcome the guidance-

[Flashcoders] The model as a static var in multiple views -- are there hidden dangers in doing this?

2006-06-01 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor

I have several views that are rendering the same model- pieces of it anyway-
each view is of the same class- "VideoScreen" - each view starts off its
life by getting a reference to the singleton model- It dawned on me "duh"
that I can have the first instance of the class instantiate the singleton
and assign it as a static variable within the class. The other instances
created would therefore have access to that reference and not need to
re-instantiate it. Is there any quirk in ActionScript 2 that I'm
overlooking that's going to make this entirely fall apart or is this a
reasonable approach? The model is also a custom VideoModel Class that holds
data that will be shared across all of the instances.

Basically, it's a Runtime flv compositer. The movies were untouched from
camera to FLV (except for encoding of course) and the rest of what you see
is using BitmapData object and some flash 8 filters at runtime.

this is a demo I did a while back. Chris Allen said I didn't publicize it
correctly ;) You can download the source on that page as well.

[Flashcoders] Do objects lose their class identity when they are stored and retrieved from an lso?

This is probably a dumb question but I haven't found an answer on Google.
When I save a set of data to a Local Shared object do I need to create some
sort of deserializer to get it? I just tested some stuff from my shared
object with a instanceof operator and it returned false.

[Flashcoders] The effects of the Flash 8 security model on windowSWF Files

2006-05-17 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor

I have a windowSWF file that is interacting with the file system. At first
it is able to do a login to retrieve information from the server but after a
logout the login call to the server no longer works. It is able to function
from within the testing environment and my best guess is that since the
windowSWF file is operating from the panel it may be behaving as a
standalone file and might therefore be hindered by the restrictions that
prohibit swf files to use both local and network assets. Can anyone guide
me on this or substantiate my suspicion. I've googled myself to death about
it to no avail.

[Flashcoders] When a class is composed in multiple objects is it only still compiled once

2006-05-03 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor

I'm thinking that if I have a class in a project other instances of that
class would use the same code. I'm trying to deduce the source of the
weight in my ActionScript files. I don't mean to double post so I apologize
in advance if this is considered that. I'm formulating clear questions in
hopes of getting some specific advice on class code optimization steps.

I read at one point in time the sizes of different classes in ActionSCript-
I unfortunately don't have that refernce with me today. Is anyone aware of
an online ref to file size added by instantiating different classes?

I think you could add a method on your audience object that does
acrobat_mc.addListener( this);
and a  method
onTrickCompleted=function(){

}
from the acrobat_mc you would call a broadcastMessage("onTrickCompleted");

[Flashcoders] Problem with removeEventListener and Delegate

2006-04-27 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I am using the following code to add an eventListener
VideoModel.getInstance().addEventListener("startUpdates",
Delegate.create(this, videoUpdates));

Later when this dispatched event is caught I'm using the following to try to
remove the listener but it is not working- Am I missing some other detail.

public function videoUpdates(ev){
Logger.info("updated");
Logger.info("source:"+ ev.source._name);
if(ev.source._name==targetVideo || targetVideo=="defaultVideo"){
Logger.info("BINGO");
this.assignedStream=ev.stream;
Logger.debug(ev.target);
VideoModel.getInstance().removeEventListener("startUpdates",
this.videoUpdates);
}
Logger.info("i am "+ this  +" my targetVideo is"+ targetVideo);

}
I also tried removing the listener using a reference that was passes in
through the event object with no success.
Please help- I can't figure out why it's failing.

[Flashcoders] Is it okay to destroy a singleton?

2006-04-26 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
What is the best way to destroy a Singleton? I have a program that has a
videoList when members are logged in - when they log out although the swf
will still be open I would like that the list (which is a Singleton that
they can tote around with them throughout the minisite) be destroyed-. I
was thinking of creating a destroy method of the singleton that would set
the _instance value to null and therefore allow the whole creation and
init() process to be called anew by the login but wondered if I was setting
myself up for a pitfall that I didn't know about.

Thanks,

Try making sure that there are absolutely no spaces at the start or end of

I'm not sure if you downloaded or cut and pasted the code but sometimes when
cut and pasting if you inadvertently add a space you'll get that error.

[Flashcoders] can a dataset be a memebr of a nonvisual class

2006-04-07 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I have a class that is nonvisual - a ProjectModel and in it I am keeping two
sets of data in DataSets. I wanted to keep the datasets in there so that
when people switch projects the new datasets would be present for each
project. I'm having trouble listening to events on the dataset in the
project class. This lead me to thinking that the dataset component is
actually dragged on stage to be initiated. So does that mean that a class
that has no movieClip can't hold a dataset?

If so how do people handle this type of thing? I'm thinking that I might
just need to use the events dispatched by my ModelLocator but I was a bit
far along when I came across the ModelLocator for ARP and some of my code
had happily "tightly coupled" with the datasets.

perfect- thanks. I wanted to make sure that it would not behave funny..ly(

[Flashcoders] static variable in class to keep an array of members

2006-04-06 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
Is there any reason not to create a static array in a class that is inited
when the first instance is created and then keeps an array of all of the
class members? I am currently using a helper class to manage that but was
looking for a convenient way to serialize the stack of members after some
had been removed . I figured that I could have a static saveAllInstances()
method that would run through the array and tell each one to save itself.
Any best practice on this?

[Flashcoders] DataSet- loadFromSharedObject Conundrum

2006-04-05 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I'm using the DataSet componentand its loadFromSharedObject() method. The
strange thing is that when it loads from the shared object it puts the
content at _dataSet.[instancenam_ of_the_dataset]. I was hoping to set up
some databinding in ActionScript to this dataSet but how do I set that up?
I've tried the following but got no results:

private function setUpBindings() : Void {
var src = new mx.data.binding.EndPoint();
  src.component = projects_ds;
  src.property ="dataProvider";
  src.event = "modelChanged";
  var
cbFormat:Object={cls:RearrangeFields,settings:{fields:"label=._level0.app.projects_ds.items.title,data=title"}};

  var dest= new mx.data.binding.EndPoint();
  dest.component = navigation.project_cb;
  dest.property = "dataProvider";
  new mx.data.binding.Binding(src, dest);

}Note that I removed the cbFormat from the Binding constructor

Any help would be appreciated-
Thanks in advance

[Flashcoders] Idea- beta tester contest.

2006-04-01 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I came across this
articlewhile
doing some reading about Sun's Mustang. What caught my attention was
the mention of a contest run by sun to find errors in regression tests in
the new Java. Now I might have taken this entirely out of context but it
gave me an idea that I wanted to throw out there and see if anybody from
Adobe thinks it's worth catching.

We have the Flex Derby -right? How about an 8.5 player bug-finding
competition. We all know that it's very important to the face of the
Player 8.5 to be as close to flawless as possible. I personally feel that
the tendency now is to toy with the new features etc. How about motivating
people to make sure that legacy content works and if it doesn't finding out
where it fails?

Okay- that's it for my idea. If it's dumb then ignore or flame me. I've
got my asbestos on...but it's worth a thought.

[Flashcoders] Re: allowing users to call custom method in a component

2006-03-31 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I actually just figured out a possible solution. Jsut thoguht I'd share it
. By having the component just dispatch events with the entered names then
I don't have to worry about all the converting to functions etc

just use:

private function checkForEvents(){
trace("checking");
var itr:Iterator=videoEvents.getIterator();
while(itr.hasNext()){
var videoEvent=itr.next();
var method=videoEvent.methodToCall;
dispatchEvent({type:method});
trace(videoEvent.methodToCall);
}

}

and then :

import mx.data.binding.ObjectDumper;
trace(ObjectDumper.toString(red.videoEvents));
red.addEventListener("testing2", testListener);
function testListener(){
trace("testlistcaught");
}
red.addEventListener("testing",test1Listener);
function test1Listener(){
    trace("testing one is caught");
}

[Flashcoders] allowing users to call custom method in a component

2006-03-31 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I have a component that has a collection property that holds some events.
My goal is for the user to be able to fill out the panel with two params
for each event: eventTime and method to call.
I've gotten to that part but what I'm trying to do now is convert these user
entered stings into functions to be called by my component.

for example - the user could add a value of 1000:squeakinto the params
dialog and at 1000 I would call the squeak method.

Here's what I have tried so far- to no avail.

private function checkForEvents(){
trace("checking");
var itr:Iterator=videoEvents.getIterator();
while(itr.hasNext()){
var videoEvent=itr.next();
var method:Function=Function(videoEvent.methodTocall);
method.call();
trace(videoEvent.methodToCall);
}

}

If anybody could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Flashcoders] Testing LocalConnection from a server in the IDE

2006-03-29 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
Alan- They're both on the same machine but thanks for clearing that up
either way.

I was thinking that I could test a file sitting on the server using a local
swf file and the local connection. I tried putting the domain permission
etc but to no avail. Finally I resolved to just placing the other swf file
on the same html page in a "debug" version.

Rajat- as far as the name starting with an underscore -does that help? I
don't think I've ever come across that- If so I have overlooked it.

Thanks guys,

Mani

[Flashcoders] Is there a way to retrieve the order of a given item in my dataset?

2006-03-28 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
It would seem that would be something easy to obtain - I want to find out
the current index of the selected item in my DataSet. I checked the ID
property and it's not a regular index like an array. Do I have to go
through actually dumping the content into an Array or is there an easier
way. Since the inheritance of the Dataset is from MovieClip I can't just
call one of it's parent class methods. Any suggestions on how this is
done? I'm thinking I might end up having to decorate it with an indexing
method but that that seems like a lot for a feature that I'm probably just
not aware of how to access.

Followup- nonvisual movieClip dataRe: [Flashcoders] How soon is movieClip data available ?

I've been toying around with this a bit. if I have nonvisual elements in a

another calling class-is that correct?

I'm finding that I can get values out of a component on Stage- in which case
I could use that as a flag for being in debug mode.

[Flashcoders] How soon is movieClip data available ?

2006-03-27 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I asked a variation of this a few days ago and have since tried to do some
research about it. Hopefully someone can help me out if I phrase the
question differently because I have not had much luck finding the answer.

If I a creating a debugger component- within the v2 component architecture.
Is it possible for it to get data into my other elements on the stage before
they are inited. I am trying to set a debug variable to true -which would
change the way the application behaves. Is it not possible without placing
some code in the timeline? I'm thinking that since the components
constructores are called by the timeline that I might have some trouble
getting my component's constructor to beat the calls from other items on
stage. If I'm chasing something that I'm not going to be able to do can
someone let me know or point me to anything with advice on setting an
application "debug" mode without having to manually code it into the
timeline?

[Flashcoders] Making variables from a component available

2006-03-25 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I am attempting to have a component that when present on the stage
immediately sets some flash variables. The problem that I am coming across
is that since the component is instantiated like other MovieClips I'm
wondering how soon the variables in the component will be available for
use.

What's the fastest way to get some variables into my movie that are put into
a component's parameters panel and is there a workaround that is standard
practice for this?

[Flashcoders] Using an Interace as a means of Sharing constants

2006-03-25 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
Can someone help me clear my head on this? I read somewhere about using an
interface as a means of providing a class with access to some constants. I
can't remember where I read it but I am trying to locate a good read about
using an interface versus having static variables of some class. If I'm way
off on this someone shoot this down before I get it stuck in my head. If
I'm on to something pleased point me in the direction of a reference. It's
okay if it's in another programming language- I just need something to help
me get it cleared up and am having little luck with my Google phrasing.

Thanks,

Mani

[Flashcoders] Re: Where the heck are my LSO files - Never mind solved it-

2006-03-23 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
It turns out that I am publishing the swf to my windowSWf folder so I was
looking in the wrong set of directories entirely. The location of the .sol
file depends on where the swf is sitting when it is running.

[Flashcoders] Where the heck are my LSO files

2006-03-23 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I have looked in the folders and subdirectories where I am supposed to find
my LSO files and they are not there. I'm using the 8.5 beta player. I
tried creating a non-form based app and was able to easily find that .sol
file but cannot find them in my project despite the fact that I am able to
trace a size for them.

I even searched my whole drive for it.

Any suggestions?

[Flashcoders] How would I switch the order of two items in a datagrid

2006-03-23 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
I am trying to implement a move item up or move item down with the Datagrid
in Flash 8. Can I do that with the dataProvider on the datagrid or would I
be better off creating an outside model as the dataprovider for my Datagrid?
