Hi There are two things I am trying to do with bitmap data. The first is to analyze every pixel in an image using getpixel and then store this info as xml data for later manipulation. Hi I have an unusual flash form project in that the hosting provider doesn't support ANY server side scripting. My goal is to simply pass name value pairs from a form...I assume the only way I can do this is using sendAndLoad and a LoadVars object. [Flashcoders] Q; Extending the media playback component
Hi I would like to extend the media playback component, essentially adding more features. Is this simply a matter of extending the class mx.controls.MediaPlayback.as ? Would it really matter if I use inheritance or composition? [Flashcoders] Q: Referencing a class method from a _parent MovieClip reference
Hi having what I think is a scope issue I can't seem to resolve. In one Class I have: //::CODE BEGINS: for(var n=0;n9;n++){ var mc=target.createEmptyMovieClip(+n,target.getNextHighestDepth()); c=new Cell(mc,1,cellwidth,api); c.update() //works!! } //::CODE ENDS: later on in the same class I need to call the 'update' method of my 'Cell' class but only on certain instances... of the container Movieclip(s) that the Cell class was instantiated inside. (mc would represent a reference to the container Movieclip for my Cell class) mc.c.update() //obviously doesn't work I think I have to somehow point a method of my container Movieclip to the Class method Does this make any sense? Any suggestions? Well solved I think... Instead of 'createEmptyMovieClip' I'm using attachMovie with an initbj that references the correct class //CODE BEGIN::: var initObj:Object = {creatorRef:c}; var mc=target.attachMovie(mc_blank,+n,target.getNextHighestDepth(),initObj); //CODE ENDS::: later on just call 'mc.creatorRef.classmethod' [e] jbach at bitstream.ca [c] 416.668.0034 [w] www.bitstream.ca ...all improvisation is life in search of a style. - Bruce Mau,'LifeStyle' ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com

[Flashcoders] Q:implementing quadtrees
I need to perform distance calculations between a number of fixed 'hotspots' and a draggable movie clip on a 2d plane. To reduce the number of calcualtions I only want to be concerned with those 'hotspots' that are 'closest to' the movieclip at any given time. So I need to perform some sort of 'proximity test' In an earlier post someone pointed out Grant Skinner's Proximity class, which is useful if all of your hot spots are moving. Martin Wood alos opnend my eys to something called 'quadtrees' which is a method of spatial partitioning absolutely essential in reducing the number of calculations in games involving a lot of 3d rendering and spatial movement. A great reference here: http://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article1303.asp The simple quadtree I have in mind would be composed of a 16X16 grid of cells or 'leaves'. The dimensions of our draggable clip would also be smaller than each cell. To simplify things each 'base node' I would define as having 2X2 or 4 cells. So there would be a total of 256 cells and 64 'base nodes'. The total number of nodes in this scenario would be: 4 (1st level nodes) + 4X4 (2nd level nodes) + 4X(4X4) (3rd level or 'base nodes') = 84 total nodes So, to begin, I create this grid, then create my nodes array (or arrays). Each node in the array would be composed of x,y,width, height (probably simpler to do the width, height calculation up front than simply using bounding points) At any given time there would be four 'base nodes' that would be considered 'nearest neighbours'..we need to check for and return the current plus 3 additional 'base nodes' depending on which one of four cells in the current 'base node' we're 'over' at any given time (this is easier to ilustrate on a sheet of graph paper). But the net result is that we are dealing with only 4 as opposed to 64(the entire grid) 'base nodes' or 16 vs 256 cells...a savings or reduction of 16X. So i guess what I'm asking is What is the best way to set up the node array(s)? (nested , associative, using objects, etc) and Given the current x,y coordinates of the draggable movieclip and the nodes array(s), how to perform the quadtrees calculaton? [Flashcoders] Q:creating a 'snappable' class
Hi I'm creating a 'snappable' class, that would work with a predefined set of x,y pairs or 'hotspots'. When a dragged movieclip was within a 'offset' distance of any of these hotspots it would 'snap to' and stop drag. The best way of doing this I thought would be to simply pass an array of predefined x,y pairs as an object into the class when it was instantiated. However, having to cycle thru an array, especially if there are a huge number of 'hotspots', while dragging doesn't seem very efficientcan anyone suggest a better way of approaching this? [Flashcoders] Q: All OOP or ??????
Hi I was curious what approach most developers are using for their projects: 1 doing ALL of there development for every project within an OOP based framewrok, ie everything, from drawing and/or placing of objects, transitioning, interacting with server special effects, is done with a custom Class based framework and is entirely OOP based. 2 Or do most developers currently use a more 'hybrid' approach, with a lot of assets placed on stage at authortime and referenced via an '#include' if code is needed to be outside the FLA file. If third party Class code already exists (ie tween engines) then that is used rather than re-creating it from scratch. Custom classes are developed ONLY if there is some need for code re-use. Related to the above discussion there has been a lot of talk about use of design patterns, and , specifically the Model View Controller 'meta' pattern. Having just finished 'Head First Design Patterns' it all makes sense now. But there seems to be more than one way to interpret MVC, especially when it comes to whether the controller should be separated from the view 3 Which ways do developers implement the MVC pattern? [Flashcoders] Q:Class relationship puzzle
John No, Global can and does function independently of Local. It doesn't 'need' Local. The basic sequence again is this: Application class is instantiated on the main timeline or _root. Global is instantiated from within the 'Application' class which also references the Global class thru a _global variable. Local is instantiated afterwards and references the Global class thru the same _global variable. Local then passes an object to a public method in the Global class. This public method in Global then triggers a public method in Local (a reference to the Local public method was contained in the object passed to the Global public method) Does this make sense? [Flashcoders] aseditor discussion
I've used just about everything on both PC and Mac. On the PC (currently better supported for developers) PrimalScript, Sepy, and although haven't tried it yet, Keith Peters mentions great things about FlashDevelop http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/ My choice (although pricey) PrimalScript, and the next release will finally support code folding. There's a special New years eve offer for version 4 On the Mac Currently trying and enjoying Textmate. It has a intelligent project View and cold folding. Clean and simple yet powerful enough for my needs. Last time I tried Sepy found it to be buggy. Eclipse is of course powerful but java based apps always seem a bit slow on OSX IMHO. Xcode is wonderful, but not enough support yet for Actionscript. If someone could get the class modeller to work with Actionscript and figure out how to get a truly intelligent project view, then Xcode would be THE killer development app for AS coders on the Mac. Now if PrimalScript and Textmate could only support UML, with export to stub code. There are a number of UML tools out there for Java. I use and like the free tool called Jude.
