[flexcoders] Setting height of Textarea dynamically

Does anybody how this is done. How Do I determin wat the height needs
to be after I have set the text in it. I don't want any scrollbars but
I do want to show everything in the textarea. So I need to know the

If I'm not mistaken, is what you are trying to achieve that given an
array, called summary, you want to loop over that array and for each
element in the array, you want to display an image with a label
 underneath it ?

That being the case, I'm confused by the approach you are taking ...
 ... why would you not:

 o Create a custom component called Preview.mxml
   - This is a VBox with an Image and a Label
o Use mx:Repeater to stamp out multiple Preview components,
using summary as the dataProvider for your repeater ?

Unless you're down to super-optimisation stages of your application,
with nowhere left to go, your approach with ActionScript, using
createChild(), etc, seems like putting a fork in the sugar bowl (a
good Scottish money saving trick I'll let you know, but makes the
intended task much harder than it need be)

 Thoughts ?

[flexcoders] Flexcoders FAQ

2005-05-30 Thread Steven Webster

All,

I'm just about to
post out an FAQ to the Flexcoders list; this has been compiled by a number of
active
contributors to the
Flexcoders list, in attempt to not only address some of the more common
questions
that are posed to
the list, but to emphasise some guidelines for those posting to Flexcoders, as
to how
to best ensure that
your questions are appropriate, and are answered.

We shall configure
the list to send out the Flexcoders FAQ once a month, as well as to all new
list
members on
subscription.

Big up to everyone
who contributed to the FAQ, and especially to Matt Chotin who took the bit
between
his teeth to get
this initiative off all of our todo lists.

1. What is Flexcoders?

Flexcoders is a forum where developers can ask questions about Flex,
FlexBuilder,
and Flex-related technologies (like Cairngorm, FlexUnit and SynergyFLEX).
The
community is made up of everyday Flex developers as well as Macromedia
employees.
However, this is not an official Macromedia-sponsored forum, it is actually
moderated by the folks at iteration::two, a consultancy responsible for
authoring
the book Developing Rich Internet Applications with Macromedia Flex.

2. How does Flexcoders relate to the Macromedia Flex Forum on
   www.macromedia.com?

Both the Macromedia Flex Forum and Flexcoders provide help on issues related
to
Flex, and neither is an official support mechanism. Some people monitor
both
forums, some only one. It is up to you to decide where you might have a
better
experience getting a question answered and being able to subsequently help
others.

3. Who posts to Flexcoders?

Everyone who has a question or an answer. Many members of the Flex
development
team read and respond to Flexcoders as well as other Macromedia folks who
monitor
the community.

Some recurring Macromedia folks are:

David Mendels: EVP and GM, highest-level executive in charge of Flex. Lucian
Beebe: Sr. Product Manager, Flex. Matt Chotin, Manish Jethani, Abdul Qabiz,
Gordon Smith, Peter Farland and many more: Engineers on Flex.

Active community members include:

Steven Webster (Technical Director at iteration::two and co-author of

Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex), Alistair McLeod (Development Director at
iteration::two and co-author of Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia
Flex),
Jesse Warden (JesterXL - Flash badass playing with Flex), Tracy Spratt

5. Guidelines to effective question-asking

Include a useful subject; this will help people find their own questions and
answers later.

Explain what you are trying to accomplish.

Explain the error (include compilation errors or a description of the
runtime
behavior).

Be prepared to break your problem down into a simpler scenario in case
someone
wants to try to debug the code themselves. Remember, private web services
are
inaccessible; you may need to create some dummy data to emulate problems.

Phrases to avoid:

URGENT (we all have deadlines, no one is intentionally delaying a response
to
you)

Please send code (this is very frustrating to read as it implies you
aren't
interested in learning anything on your own. Where code is appropriate you
can
expect someone to provide it, but in many cases you will learn more by doing
it
on your own with appropriate guidance. It may be that you're on a deadline
and
just want to finish, but many of those who respond regularly would prefer to
teach you to fish so that you can answer your own questions next time and
even
help out others).

6. Mini-FAQ

Q: Can I mail Matt, Manish, Abdul, Pete, Gordon, iteration::two, or anyone
else
for that matter off-line with my question?

A: Please don't! If someone is capable of answering your question on-list
please
believe that it will be done. Everyone on the list has full-time jobs doing
their own work and often answer flexcoders on their own time; mailing them
off-
list doesn't endear you to them. If no one answers on-list in a reasonable
amount of time (24 hours) you can try to rephrase the question and perhaps
include more detail (including a version of the problem that

[flexcoders] Re: Flex on the Web

2005-05-30 Thread jberling2001
Hey all,

Going back a week or two, my company is currently developing a rather
complex and integrated Flex RIA for the mastronet.com website. The
application will be used for bid tracking, bid placement, and viewing
lots available in the auction.

The site will be available at www.mastronet.com on June 13th. Check it
out when it goes live... I think it will be more of what you are
looking for in a Flex RIA.

The ScrollView class does not automatically scroll content. It simply
provides an API to implement for components that need to scroll their
contents. The following Flex classes directly extend ScrollView:

 1. mx.containers.Container
 2. mx.controls.TextArea
 3. mx.controls.listclasses.ScrollSelectList

If you open your FlexforFlash.zip, you'll be able to find the source
for all three classes. That should be good enough to get you started.
After that if you have any questions, feel free to ask here and I'll
be most willing to help.

Okay,

So with that said, why are the Form and
FormItem tags mentioned so often in every example I
see?

Or is this just another tool that the developer can select
from, in order to make the workflow easier? But at the same time, it's not
absolutely necessary that the developer go that exact route, whenever creating
Forms in which it's imperative that the controls all line up

Hi Mike,

I use the FORM and FORMITEM
tags whenever I want to use the automatic layout they provide. I'd say I use
them about 75% of the time. The rest of the time, I just place a component(s)
within the container that is appropriate.

I guess the moral of the story
is, doesn't matter what containers your components are laid out in, you can always apply the validators and then take the data and do as you
please.

Its not like HTML, where you
have to use the FORM tag. HTML, remember that?

[flexcoders] Questions on Containers, and their drag-ability

2005-05-30 Thread Mike Anderson
Hello All,

Of course, all containers have their specific uses, and depending on the
preferences of the developer, a container that works well for one
developer, may not be the preference for another developer. I can see
this confusing some beginner developers, that may be confused as to
which container is the most appropriate, for the present task at hand.

Most containers bundled with Flex Builder (along with their given names)
are obvious in their use, but some others, not so much... In fact, I
would love some items added to the FAQ down the road, talking
specifically about containers, and some of their interesting and
novel uses they may have, that typical developers have not yet thought
up.

No matter which container I choose however, it would be nice to have
them be able to be dragged across the desktop space. Just like the
Alert box - which is automatically dragable. In my application, I OFTEN
pop up detail screens, based on the current selections one layer below.
The user can leave that detail window open as long as they choose, or
they can close it. BUT, it's important that they can drag it around, so
they can work in other areas of the application.

With all this said, is there anything I should keep in mind, when
selecting the proper containers (which will act like popup windows with
title bars), etc.?

In Flash MX, you would have to lay an invisible button over a custom
made movie-clip, then add startDrag() and stopDrag() code, in order to
drag a window around on the desktop.

What is the proper method, of giving any type of window (or container
for that matter), the ability to be dragged around?

Thanks in advance for your insights,

Mike

RE: [flexcoders] Form Questions (and frustrations)

2005-05-30 Thread Mike Anderson

YES! (regarding the HTML Tag comment you
made)...

I guess, when writing my code, MXML is SO similar to HTML,
that it's striking a lot of nerves while I write... and that inherently makes me
wonder if I am truly writing my code properly. Old habits die hard they
say - and I just have to clear my head of all that HTML crap that I've learned
over the years, and truly realize that MXML is a TOTALLY new language - it's
just similar in structure...

Well, I feel better now - because my app is almost 100%
Forms - and validation... So of course, seeing every example thus far,

proceeding any further.

Thanks SO much for your input regarding
this.

Hi Mike,

I use the FORM and FORMITEM
tags whenever I want to use the automatic layout they provide. I'd say I use
them about 75% of the time. The rest of the time, I just place a component(s)
within the container that is appropriate.

I guess the moral of the story
is, doesn't matter what containers your components are laid out in, you can
always apply the validators and then take the data and do as you
please.

Its not like HTML, where you
have to use the FORM tag. HTML, remember that?

Enjoy!

Okay,

So with that said, why are the Form and
FormItem tags mentioned so often in every example I
see?

Or is this just another tool that the developer can select
from, in order to make the workflow easier? But at the same time, it's not
absolutely necessary that the developer go that exact route, whenever creating
Forms in which it's imperative that the controls all line up
perfectly...

I would be grateful for as many people as possible to
comment on this topic, as I would feel much better as I forge ahead with my
application, knowing that I am doing my coding in an acceptable
manner.

Thanks again everybody,

Mike

That is correct, you do not
need to have your components contained within a FORM. Validation will work
regardless if component in contained with a FORM or not, same goes for sending
the data to a service.

the developer forced to use Forms, whenever collecting data for the purpose

[flexcoders] Re: Question about two mxml pages

2005-05-30 Thread Jimmy
Hi,

There is no such thing as going from one MXML page to another. In
Flex, all MXML and AS files get compiled into one SWF file (Flash
movie) and then delivered to the browser.

But you are partially correct, most likely you have two forms, each
contained within its own MXML file. So each is a component, which will
be housed within some container, and you should probably take a look
at the ViewStack together with a LinkBar in this case. Or a
TabNavigator will do nicely as well.

You can find the docs on either of those here:
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/15/

Hope that helps!

Tried searching the forums on this (get the feeling the search feature

does verticalGap or horizontalGap work for the dataProvider container
TileList?

tried setting values but don't seem to have the gaps showing up
between each cellItem.

thanks

[flexcoders] showDataTips for the List within a ComboBox

2005-05-30 Thread DavidLand
Im trying to get data tips for the list component embedded within the
ComboBox and not having much luck. Works fine for normal List boxes
but cant seem to get anything off of the child one within the CB.

Within the class extending the ComboBox I have this:

   this.dropdown.showDataTips = true;
   this.dropdown.dataTipField = pos;

This works just fine on a normal List:
mx:List id=ll dataProvider={samp} dataTipField=pos
showDataTips=false labelField=name/

Any help would of course be very appreciated. Thnx.

How to link a field to is .chm file related topic? That could be
invoke using F1 or by clicking on a question mark in the Flex apps
menu...or whatever the process.

Thanks for your suggestion.

[flexcoders] Massive JRun4 Problems - and your advice for resources...

2005-05-30 Thread Mike Anderson
Hello All,

I know JRun4 questions are slightly off-topic, but my questions are
directly related to Flex, as without a functioning JRun4 server, the
Flex 1.5 Server is pretty much useless.

As much as Macromedia makes impressive products, I am completely blown
away as to crappy reliability of fresh JRun4 installs. I used the
install program directly off my DevNet Subscription CD, AND I also tried
downloading it from my Subscriptions page - in hopes of maybe getting a
slightly newer or older version.

No matter which darn server I install it on - Windows 2003 Standard,
Windows 2003 Web Edition, Windows 2000 Server, or Windows XP - I get
errors EVERY stinking time, when the service tries to start. The Admin
Service starts fine 100% of the time, BUT the Default Server that is
created, generates TONS of errors upon startup. After an install, I
even apply the latest Service Pack from MM, in hopes of correcting
errors. Things improve slightly (less errors upon initialization) but
STILL, the Default Server refuses to start AND any new server I try to
create, refuses to start. And as always, the error messages are
completely useless.

I've seen KB Articles regarding the JVM/JDK being version 1.5 - and
issues regarding that. I applied all possible patches, and performed
all suggestions from the Help Articles, and STILL nothing...

I am so TERRIBLY frustrated, and wasted SO much stinking time on this,
that it just obliterated my productivity for the last couple weeks.
With all of us being developers, we all know that our time (especially
billable time) is worth GOLD. I am almost tempted to send MM a bill for
all my wasted time. I've never been through this much crap with
Microsoft products (which is probably why I still use .NET exclusively
for Server Side solutions (as I need reliability and server solutions
that actually install without a hitch and also *work* 100% of the time).

Please forgive me for the ranting, but I've gotten to the point (due to
an accumulation over the years of pulling all-nighters because of buggy
server software and development tools) where I just want to throw MM
products out the window and kiss it all goodbye. Of course, I hang on
to the hopes of an eventually perfected/mature development environment,
comprised of the seamless integration of IDE tools Server components,
so I can FINALLY deliver something truly wonderful to my clients.

I still believe in the end, that MM solutions, will be the means to
achieving that goal - but at what cost???

Since so many on this list, have probably been through JRun4 woes before
(due to Flex Server and/or ColdFusion), that possibly somebody could
contact me off-list or point me in the right direction for quality
information, regarding JRun4 and all it's funky quirks. I admit, I have
not yet directly contacted MM - so hopefully, they will be willing to
talk to me since I am a fully paid-up DevNet Subscriber. BUT if I have
to fork out cash for premium service, simply to get their server product
to simply *install* properly, I will be really peeved.

Thanks everybody for listening, and as always, I am truly grateful for
all your help.

Humbly,

Mike :)
