RE: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: 3rd party Components :: Adobe comments

2006-05-02 Thread Matt Chotin

This post has not gone unnoticed but youre
asking for our plans slightly before we have them all down in a form we can
talk about J Were going to try to put together something to explain our
thinking over the next day or two and will post back. A number of us have
spent many weeks/months trying to work on preparing materials (not just the doc/reference)
and thinking of programs that will help developers of apps, components, and
what have you.

Stay tuned,

Jesse,

In a nutshell that is all I meant. No disrespect to Adobe or Macormedia.
Developers need tools just like the tools they are giving all their clients.

As a component developer, you must swallow the fact that your client is going
to make big bucks off your measly 200$ a license to them.

Once, you get past that, yes most component developers are inventors at the
core. So, these 'docs' would only speed up our Flex implementation into the
WORLD.

Since competition is technology these days, Adobe has already done awsome to
even do public betas(I know this the trend but still..)

I've spent 3 years learning the MX 2004 / 8 v2 component
framework, and it makes sense to me... most of it. I never cared for the
DataSet andbinding classes, but everything else has allowed me to create
applications I couldn't have without knowlege of using them and the rest of the
framework.

I have created components with v2 also, plus a container framework(that never
got used becasue it was to much for me). So, yes the v2 has it's strengths and
if you have heard from me the last 3 years I spent learning Flash and it's
component framework, you know where I am comming from.

Peace, Mike

Macromedia made a strong effort to listen to the community's
feedback upon it's release, and eventually documented it. Too little too
late for some of us, but at least they did what they said they were going to
do. Upon the release of Flex 1, they had apparently learned from that
mistake because the Flex 1 documentation for components was top notch compared
to Ellipsis (Flash 7.2). This put up or shutup attitude was nice to see;
for everyone who asked a question that was directly answerable from the docs,
people on the Flexcoders list pointed them toRTFM manual, and it
wasgood to see they had faith in what they produced. Upon reading
the documentation for Beta 2, and seeing Sho's blog post on the revamp for Beta
3, I think Adobe is continuing that quality in documentation.

Granted, documenting the API for a List component and
documenting not only how to USE that List component, but USING that List
component with OTHERS are3 totally different things. I think we are
getting the latter after reading pages about utilizing item renderers, and
UIComponent API changes. Granted, you can't judge it yet since it's not
done, nor is the source code publicly released in this build to compare and contrast.

While I personally think it's up to the developer to invest
their own personal time to learn the framework on their own, I would still
prefer docs written that help get us up to speed as soon as possible to provide
a better cost to time invested ratio, ecspecially since the scope of this
component framework is much larger than v1 v2 combined.

Hi,

Adobe says they want a rich 3rd party componenty community.

I have one question;

Is Adobe going to give developers a road map of their framework ?
Macromedia severly failed when trying to proliferate those quasi components
named v2. Us developers spent 6 months figuring the rats nest out(in the end it
didn't make any sense anyway).

Do we Flex2 component devs get a road map(whitepapers) of the
framework or do we have to waste 6 months learning code alogrithms when the
source for the flex2 framework comes out?

Peace, Mike

PS This comment stems from the fact Manish just pointed out the
dropdownFactory of the ComboBox. Which is modular development at its
best! I mean, looking at the 10,000 pages of api docs I do see it listed
but common! You have to have something that your internal devs use. (this could
have saved me hours)

I've been going to the

functionality:

http://livedocs.macromedia.com/labs/1/flex20beta2/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=LiveDocs_Partsfile=Part2_DevApps.html

But now that button is broken. In general, links to the livedocs need to
be more obvious at labs.adobe.com.
I've been digging around to see if there's an updated link -- I'd rather see all
the documentation listed on the front page so I don't have to dig.

Thanks,

Tom

Make sure you have some default channels set up in your config. Or in

[flexcoders] NumberValidator dynamic binding problems

2006-05-02 Thread KOT_MATPOC

hi all,

I am using Flex 1.5 and trying to do something like that:

mx:NumberValidator minValue=1 maxValue={maxVal} domain=int
field=model.field/

I need to have maxValue attribute dynamically calculated as it might
change and I want my validator to know what is the current maxValue
for that field. However, this doesn't seem to work. I define a
variable maxVal, assign it a value, and bind it to the validator. But
it doesnt see it. If I hardcode it like that:

mx:NumberValidator minValue=1 maxValue=8 domain=int
field=model.field/

it works fine, but dynamic binding doesn't work here.

anyone has any suggestions? Thanks a lot

[flexcoders] Re: addEventListener In Flex 2.0

2006-05-02 Thread bhaq1972

you can do the following

 In Flex 1.5 I had this:

 Parent

 DesignView[0].addEventListener(selectionChanged,
 mx.utils.Delegate.create(this, valueChanged))

 function valueChanged(event)
 {
  currentSelection = event.selection
  adjustControls(event.style)
 }

Flex2B2
Parent

DesignView[0].addEventListener(selectionChanged, valueChanged)

function valueChanged(event:SelectionChangedEvent):void
{
 currentSelection = event.selection;
 adjustControls(event.style);
}

create a class called SelectionChangedEvent as follows

package
{
 import flash.events.Event;

 public class SelectionChangedEvent extends flash.events.Event
 {
 public var selection:String;
 public var style:Object(not sure what type style settings is)

 public function SelectionChangedEvent(_selection:String,
_style:String);
 {
 super(selectionChanged);
 selection = _selection;
 style = _style;
 }
 }
}

 Child

 mx:Metadata
  [Event(showBorders)]
  [Event(selectionChanged)]
 /mx:Metadata

 dispatchEvent({type: 'selectionChanged', selection:
 event.target.getChildAt(0).id, style: styleSettings});

Child
mx:Metadata is the same

dispatchEvent(new Event(event.target.getChildAt(0).id,
styleSettings));

my suggestion is based on the flex2 samples example

bod

[flexcoders] Re: How does one build a ComboBox with a Data Grid as the drop down?

2006-05-02 Thread bhaq1972

I also have a need to have a datagrid as a dropdown.

matt's suggestion (previously to me) was to to subclass ComboBox and
override the dropdown getter.
However, i have never been able to get the dropdown getter to be
called (my trace() never shows)

mx:ComboBox
mx:Script

override public function get dropdown():List
{
trace(XX);
return super.dropdown; // only for test purpose
}
(if i could only get the override to be called, i reckon i could get
it working).

the dropDownFactory doesnt work because thats flex2beta1.

I tried Anatole's suggestion, it works (as a starting point) but i
can't get over the fact that i want a datagrid as my dropdown (where
the width of the dropdown is far larger than the combobox width
itself).

my use case for this is people want to see the 'code' and a full
description of what the code represents (sometimes description alone
isn't enough)

over the weekend i saw someone using a billing system software
(created a Barclays (UK) bank subsiduary... cant remember exactly
who) which had this feature.

More than the resolution, you care about the amount of space available

You could get the exact width and height of the stage using the following code:

 var w:Number = systemManager.stage.stageWidth;
 var h:Number = systemManager.stage.stageHeight;

Based on the values, you can set the selected index of your ViewStack.

[flexcoders] Dynamic Screen

2006-05-02 Thread Sachin Dharmapurikar

Hi Everybody,

It has been some time I am playing with Flex. I came across
a problem and I was wondering how we can do it in Flex.

Use Case:

1. Server
sends some screen XML which is having information about user controls. (Date
Selectors, Drop-down lists and Buttons etc.)…

2. Depending
on XML we need to render the screen. Just like XSLT.

Can we do this in Flex?

Similarly, is it possible to include another .swf file like
we load different classes at runtime? I want to share one component with
multiple components.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Sachin

[flexcoders] XML attribute class

2006-05-02 Thread sergio_trejo_r

I noticed that XML statements (based on the E4X specification) can have
compilation issues when an XML attribute is also a reserved keyword in
the language.

For example, if the XML contains an attribute named class, then the
_expression_ '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' will not compile because the word class is
reserved.

I ran into this problem using while compiling a Flex project using
Eclipse.

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

thanks!

Hi list,

Could somebody give me a hint how to disable the roll-out delay for Menu-
and Tree List Flex 2 Components? I'd like to get the menu/list contents
appearing immediately without any tween/easing effect.

The second question I got is how to decrease the vertical size for Menu
items? I can set the font size to 9 (smallest size without getting blur
Font) but the size that one menu item takes stays the same. Is there any
property to change that?
I haven't found any info on these things in the Flex docs so far.

Thanks for any help!
Sascha

 Does anyone know a workaround for this?

 x.attribute(class)

If this is about describeType(), we've renamed the attributes to avoid
conflicting with AS3 keywords. Beta 3.

Set the Menu object's 'rowHeight' property.

[flexcoders] Flex2 :: Feature request :: NavBar button factory

2006-05-02 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hi,

I had wirtten something to Ely about the NavBar not using a factory for
it's buttons. He thought this was a good suggestion and so do I.

BTW, I understand you are still creating this and getting the flow on.
Although it would be nice to have factories wherever you could honestly
see a subclass wanting to override a creation method-strategy of it's
parent. Not to mention opens up the door for a lot more composition of
modules.

This comes from wanting to do one simple thing with the tab bar and I
ended up reimplementing tab button, tab bar and making a new tab pane
using a viewstack super class and compositing my tab bar. All becasue I
couldn't get away from the concrete typing of the TabBar using Button.
Trust me, this was a day and a half endevour.

PS, I know when I see the source of the framework I will be able to
jimmy my stuff back to a toggle bar subclass using the code as my guide
but, I had to hack this to test things.

Peace, Mike-- What goes up, does come down.

I have added a tree contol to my form. When I set showroot to true, instead

So sorry about this, Mike! I agree with the factory suggestion.

I did build in a way to override the type of the button. In fact,
that's how the TabBar overrides the default button type (Tab instead
of Button).

 class MyButtonBar extends ButtonBar {
 public function MyButtonBar() {
 mx_internal::buttonClass = foo.bar.MyButton;
 ...
 }
 }

It's an mx_internal variable called 'buttonClass'. (Note: anything
mx_internal is for internal use and not supported.)

There are also other similar settings in ButtonBar called
'buttonStyleNameProp', 'buttonWidthProp', etc., which are overridden
by TabBar. It's totally configurable. I think these should've been
made protected instead of mx_internal.

Great!

I knew there had to be hidden implementations becasue of the change in duties of the subclass's of NavBar.

 buttonWidthProp

What is that?

I built in a way to use the HScrollBar but, I wanted it on top. That is another thing I didn't think the Container can do right?

Thanks, I will try this, I didn't want to reinvent the wheel(TabBar, TabNavigator) just to add dnd to it.

[flexcoders] FileReference upload bytes FB2

2006-05-02 Thread sourcecoderia

Does anyone know of a way to get at the bytes for the upload process?
instead of using upload(url)

I would rather use remoting then a web service, and ideally I would
like to send it in chunks, and have a return manifest type structure
once done uploading.

Any thoughts, or ideas on this? Am I Dreaming? :)

Thanks

Hi,

One more question,

The namespace mx_internal, where do I get it? I mean, the example
dosn't work becasue the namespace is undefined. Like
flash.util.flash_proxy you have to import, the same here? I am still
getting my head around namespaces, I get it but this stumps me.

Can you show me a simple complete example so I can try this?

Re: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: Feature request :: NavBar button factory

2006-05-02 Thread Michael Schmalle

Putting the scrollbars on the left/top is a lot harder

I did this in my flash 8 container framework. I used state object for
layout. It worked awsome, I might just port that some time as an
alternate Container to subclass for those 'weird' occasions you need it.

then like;

horizontalScrollBarPosition property set to top, bottom
verticalScrollBarPosition property set to left, right.

anyway... ;-)

The name of the property is specified by 'buttonWidthProp', an

internal variable.

Ok, I made the tab bar have the ability to have tabs stretch or hold
there measuredWidth. I thought this might have been something different
than just string names of properties.

[flexcoders] problems with XMLListCollection and dataProvider. please help

2006-05-02 Thread djbrown_rotonews

I'm in the process of converting some old code that took the form of:

mx:HTTPService id=getadvisordelays url=""
method=GET showBusyCursor=true
/mx:HTTPService

and a DataGrid hook point of:
dataProvider={mx.utils.ArrayUtil.toArray
(getadvisordelays.result.delays.leg)

to display my XML results in a DataGrid. It worked just fine.

However, I'm wanting to use a combo of e4x and XMLListCollection to
filter the results on the jsp on the client side, and am running
into problems.

I set up my XMLListCollection as follows:
mx:XMLListCollection id=delays_xml
source={getadvisordelays.result.delays.leg}/

But I get an
Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert [EMAIL PROTECTED] to

error when it tries to retrieve the data. I've tried
getadvisordelays.result.*
getadvisordelays.result.delays.*
getadvisordelays.resullt.delays.leg.*

as the source attrib, and they each throw an error of some form.
can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm using the following as
a source for my implementation:

[flexcoders] Re: Flex2B2 Resolution Change Event

2006-05-02 Thread Tim Hoff

Thanks Manish,

I was using the value in Application.application.stage.stageHeight
to control the viewStack. The problem that I am having is
determining an event that is consistantly dispatched when the
browser window is resized. I tried all that were available (resize,
render, etc..), but had difficulty because the new value of
stageHeight doesn't seem to update until after the screen has
finished changing size. It's not a big deal in this case because
99% of the time, the screen resolution will not be changed in the
middle of running an application. I was just interested in learning
how to do something like this should the user resize the browser
window.

I know that there is probably a way, (you guys come up with some of
the most incredible solutions) to listen for a change to the
stageHeight property and based on the value, bind a change to the
viewStack. I'm just not sure how to go about it though.

Thanks again,
Tim

 More than the resolution, you care about the amount of space

 You could get the exact width and height of the stage using the
following code:

 var w:Number = systemManager.stage.stageWidth;
 var h:Number = systemManager.stage.stageHeight;

 Based on the values, you can set the selected index of your

[flexcoders] Tab control with an icon on the active Tab

2006-05-02 Thread Karl Johnson

Has anyone
implemented a tab control that shows a clickable icon on the active tab (that
wouldlaunch an options dialog or something similiar)?I assume
theonly way to do it would be to extend the tab control and manipulate the
width of the active tab and overlay the image object on top of the active
tab...but I wanted to check if anyone had already done something similar to this
or had any ideas?

Thanks,
Karl

RE: [flexcoders] Two Flex 2 Components Questions

2006-05-02 Thread Sascha Balkau

Thanks a lot Manish!

I've created a style object like this

 mx:Style
  .testStyle
  {
   openDuration: 0;
   rowHeight: 5;
  }
 /mx:Style

And use it on the mx:MenuBar and mx:Tree with styleName=testStyle.
The opendelay is gone but the rowHeight hasn't changed. Is there anything
else I need to take into account to make this work?

Sascha

  The second question I got is how to decrease the vertical size for Menu

  property to change that?
  I haven't found any info on these things in the Flex docs so far.

 Set the Menu object's 'rowHeight' property.

[flexcoders] mx:states vs mx:viewstack when and which?

Hello, I've seen some examples with Cairngorm using either states or a
viewstack to display the current screen. I was wondering what were
the advantages/disadvantages and when you should use one over the
other? Seems like both can have the current view bound to a selection

[flexcoders] Server-Side Architecture for Flex App

2006-05-02 Thread Clarke Bishop

I am
in the process of choosing a server-side technology for a Flex App I'm building,
and I'd like to get ideas from the experts on this list. Right now, my
candidates are:

-
ColdFusion
-
Java
-
PHP
-
.Net

I'll
probably use AMF rather than web services for transfering data back and forth to
the server.

ColdFusion may always offer very tight integration with Flex and it
offers high developer productivity, but there's also the cost of the server
license. The others are free or cheap.

So, my
questions are:

- Is
there any compelling reason to pick one of these backends -- Especially
considering Flex will be on the client-side?

- Is
there another backend technology I should be considering?

Thanks,

 Clarke

[flexcoders] Dispatching an event from inside a resultEvent

2006-05-02 Thread Jonas Windey

Hi,

Though question here, and props for the person who can
help me here.

I have an mxml file and an as 3.0 class that handles the
data. I also use the datamanager classes from Jeff Tapper (http://jeff.mxdj.com/as3_datamanager.htm)
to handle the webservice requests.

Heres some code I use

In my Login.mxml:

 private function fcnSubmitLogin():void

 {

 var oLogin:Login = new Login();

  oLogin.addEventListener(testEvent,fcnTest);

  oLogin.performLogin(txtUserName.text,
txtPassWord.text);

 }

 private function
testing(event:Event):void

 {

 Alert.show(test result);

 }

In Login.as (which extends EventDispatcher)

 public function init():void

 {

 loginManager =
DataManager.getDataManager(Wsdl.loginWSDL);

loginManager.addEventListener(get_accessResponse,fcnAccessResponse);

 }

 public function
performLogin(strUserName:String, strPassWord:String):void

 {

 loginManager =
DataManager.getDataManager(Wsdl.loginWSDL);

 loginManager.makeRemoteCall(get_access,get_accessResponse);

 fcnTest();

 }

 public function
fcnAccessResponse(event:DataManagerResultEvent):void

 {

 fcnTest();

 }

 private function fcnTest():void

 {

 Alert.show(in fcnTest);

 var e:Event = new Event(testEvent );

 this.dispatchEvent(e);

 }

Now, what happens here is the following

Login.mxml adds the eventlistener so it listens until
Login.as broadcasts the event testEvent

The first time its working perfectly, the method
performLogin calls fcnTest(), fcnTest dispatches the event testEvent,
and I get both alerts (in fcnTest from Login.as, and test
result, from Login.mxml);

Now comes the problem, after the webservice is called, I
get to the method fcnAccessResponse (which is called if access is granted)

The method fcnAccessResponse calls fcnTest(), and I get
the alert in fcnTest

The problem is, fcnTest also dispatches the event testEvent,
but it doesnt get noticed by Login.mxml, whereas the first time the
method is called, it gets triggered.

Anyone got a clue? Been searching for hours now

Thanks!
Jonas

To get around this now, I would just extend Button and put the HBox inside it.

[flexcoders] resources for Flex2

quickly discovering there are so many differences between 1.5 and 2 that the

What are others finding as great resources for learning Flex2? Any plans for
updated Flex 2 books?

RE: [flexcoders] Server-Side Architecture for Flex App

2006-05-02 Thread Oscar . Cortes

I would add that this can be seen in terms of portability, performance and
how much knowledge exist in your company in certain technology. Java will
give the greatest portability, it would run seemly in Windows shops as in
Unix shops. The same is true for ColdFusion and PHP. However, this does not
hold true for .Net which only runs in Windows.

As for performance, I would actually analyze what the requirements are for
your application and develop a proof of concept or test unit, to see the
performance in each of them. You should also consider here that
RemoteObject in Flex will only work for Java, for ColdFusion you need the
Event Gateway Adapter. For any others such as .Net and PHP you will need to
use HTTPService or WebService. Consider that your choice might run slower
than others.

Lastly, I think it is highly important to consider if your company is
heading to an specific technology and how many knowledgeable people you
have on the technology of your choice. We are familiar with antagonisms
like Unix vs Windows or SQL Server vs Oracle, and how people go on how one
is better than the other. However, I truly believe that if you have a good
understanding of a technology you can make it work for you independently of
any drawbacks it might have.

Subject: [flexcoders] Server-Side Architecture for Flex App

I am in the process of choosing a server-side technology for a Flex App I'm
building, and I'd like to get ideas from the experts on this list. Right
now, my candidates are:

- ColdFusion
- Java
- PHP
- .Net

I'll probably use AMF rather than web services for transfering data back
and forth to the server.

ColdFusion may always offer very tight integration with Flex and it offers
high developer productivity, but there's also the cost of the server
license. The others are free or cheap.

So, my questions are:

- Is there any compelling reason to pick one of these backends --
Especially considering Flex will be on the client-side?

- Is there another backend technology I should be considering?

Thanks,

 Clarke

[flexcoders] Beta 3 - Custom Java Adapter

2006-05-02 Thread Jim Schneider

Here's my standard post after every beta.

We have developed a custom Java Adapter used to lookup/invoke Spring beans
that implement our remote object services. With beta 3, this is now broken
again.

I have found some mention of factories configuration in
flex-enterprise-services.xml, but don't see any examples of how to configure
such a factory for a destination.

In general, I don't really understand what the factories will do for me.
Should the factory replace my customer java adapter? Should the factory be
used to create my adapter?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jim

Yes, it is, but the stageHeight is staying the same until after the

Although, the machine that I'm using is a bit sub-standard for this

RE: [flexcoders] Two Flex 2 Components Questions

2006-05-02 Thread Deepa Subramaniam

rowHeight is a property on List-based components. MenuBar does not
derive from ListBase so you cannot set rowHeight on the MenuBar. You
need to set it on the individual menus the MenuBar pops up.

You can use the getMenuAt() method to grab each individual menu from the
MenuBar and set rowHeight there. Try something like:

mx:XML id=dp
 node label=root
  node label=one
   node label=child /
  /node
  node label=two
   node label=child /
  /node
  node label=three
   node label=child /
  /node
 /node
/mx:XML

mx:Script
![CDATA[
import mx.controls.Menu;

private function setRowHeights(mb:MenuBar):void
{
 for (var i:int = 0; i  dp.children().length(); i++)
 {
  mb.getMenuAt(i).rowHeight = 50;
 }
}
]]
/mx:Script

mx:MenuBar id=mb dataProvider={dp} showRoot=false
labelField=@label creationComplete=setRowHeights(mb);/

I have writen a class that extends the VSlider

VSliders have the property of thumbCount, which is how many little
arrows appear on the slider.

I want to prevent people from setting there own.

I thought I could hide it from them by overriding the thumbCount
property with a private one, but get an error Overriding function
that is not masked for override.

The code is something like this:

private function set thumbCount(number:Number):void{
 super.thumbCount = number;
}

What am I missing?

Are you going to consider Ruby on
Rails as a backend. Its free and makes an excellent backend to
Flex. See here:

http://www.liverail.net/articles/2006/04/16/rubyonrails-1-1-and-flex-2-0-pt-1

For example this line displays users and
their details in xml (which you can easily use with Flex):

render :xml = User.find_all.to_xml

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Component Directory

2006-05-02 Thread Graham Weldon

Hi Manish,

Feature 1 will definitely be available.
You will be able to voice you opinion in a few ways:
1) Rating 1-5 or 1-10
2) Forums specific to that component/project
3) Bug tracking
4) Feature requests

As for paid components, quite a number of people have asked me to
provide this functionality.. So its going to become part of the initial
build.
I will have to give some consideration of how to handle payments, or
whether that should be handled directly through PayPal etc.
That will require some more thought!

Keep in touch regarding this, I may need some suggestions in the future.

Graham Weldon

[flexcoders] Drawing in a List

2006-05-02 Thread Shidan

 Hi If I have this:

var statusHash = {mike : online,drew : offline, sarah : online}

and I want to populate the second row of a List with a green dot for
every member of statusHash online and a red dot for every member
offline. How would I do that.

I want to draw circles with the Graphics class for the dots and have
them appear as a horizontal sequence in the second row of the List.

Would I have to use a HList contained in the second row of a List, and
How would I draw those circles inside the List.

[flexcoders] xml parser

2006-05-02 Thread Kim Reddington

A few months ago, I
downloaded a sample written by Michael J. Prichard that took an object and
translated it to xml and then posted this to a jsp.

Somehow I lost the
sample and I'm having trouble finding where it was on the web. Does anyone know
where I can find this sample?

This was the
function call in the sample to translate to xml:
function
toXML(object2Convert:Object, arrayName:String):String

Thank
you,

A public property cannot be hidden in a subclass. You could either

[flexcoders] F2 B2 :: Setting a DisplayObject to the highest depth

2006-05-02 Thread brian_m_riley

If MovieClip.getnextHighestDepth() has been replaced with
flash.display.DisplayObjectContainer.addChild(), and
MovieClip.swapDepth() has been removed, I am wondering how I can
simply set an existing DisplayObject to the highest depth -- imagine
the following scenario:

I have 4 portal like panels, and they all exist in a Canvas.
When I double click on the header of one of the panels, it *maximizes.*

I would need to make that Panel live at the highest depth and don't
want to remove the child and then replace it with a new vr just to set
it to the highest level. Is there something I am simply overlooking?

Thanks

Well, it's definitely a server vs. client compile issue.

I changed the debug path from pointing to the html to the mxml (to

So, is it true that if you use Flex Data Services with the compile

 I would add that this can be seen in terms of portability, performance
 and
 how much knowledge exist in your company in certain technology. Java
 will
 give the greatest portability, it would run seemly in Windows shops as
 in
 Unix shops. The same is true for ColdFusion and PHP. However, this does
 not
 hold true for .Net which only runs in Windows.

 As for performance, I would actually analyze what the requirements are
 for
 your application and develop a proof of concept or test unit, to see the
 performance in each of them. You should also consider here that
 RemoteObject in Flex will only work for Java, for ColdFusion you need
 the
 Event Gateway Adapter. For any others such as .Net and PHP you will need
 to
 use HTTPService or WebService. Consider that your choice might run
 slower
 than others.

 Lastly, I think it is highly important to consider if your company is
 heading to an specific technology and how many knowledgeable people you
 have on the technology of your choice. We are familiar with antagonisms
 like Unix vs Windows or SQL Server vs Oracle, and how people go on how
 one
 is better than the other. However, I truly believe that if you have a
 good
 understanding of a technology you can make it work for you independently
 of
 any drawbacks it might have.

 I am in the process of choosing a server-side technology for a Flex App
 I'm
 building, and I'd like to get ideas from the experts on this list. Right
 now, my candidates are:

 - ColdFusion
 - Java
 - PHP
 - .Net

 I'll probably use AMF rather than web services for transfering data back
 and forth to the server.

 ColdFusion may always offer very tight integration with Flex and it
 offers
 high developer productivity, but there's also the cost of the server
 license. The others are free or cheap.

 So, my questions are:

 - Is there any compelling reason to pick one of these backends --
 Especially considering Flex will be on the client-side?

 - Is there another backend technology I should be considering?

 Thanks,

 Clarke

[flexcoders] Re: AS3 Custom Component question

2006-05-02 Thread sufibaba

Manish,

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried exending from ScrollControlBase
but still had problems to get the scroll bar to show up. I think this
has to do with how I set up the custom component.

Basically, I have a custom AS component that draws a bunch of boxes.
This custom component is wrapped in an mx:customComponent tag and
used in the rest of the flex app.

The problem occurs when drawn boxes dimensions exceeds the bounding
mxml file. Which, in normal situation, scrollbars would pop up. It
was as if the custom component's parent mxml file couldn't properly
register the total dimension of its custom child.

My workaround was to put in a mx:Vbox width=1
height={customBoxHeight} and mx:HBox height=1
width={customBoxWidth} into the custom component's mxml wrapper.

These boxes effectively serves as dimension holders within the wrapper
mxml. Since these are flex containers, their sizes are correctly seen
by flex. All that is left to do is to adjust the sizes of these boxes
according to the dimension of the custom component.

Note: {customBoxHeight} and {customBoxWidth} are values from the
custom component.

This solution is quite simple to implement and is quite reliable for
those who run into this problem.

Cheers,

Tim

 To avoid a lot of work, extend your component from ScrollControlBase
 instead of UIComponent.

[flexcoders] Sprite /Graphics in MXML Page

2006-05-02 Thread fuzzoolia

Hi can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml xmlns=*
layout=absolute

 mx:Script
  ![CDATA[

  import flash.display.DisplayObject;
 import flash.display.Graphics;
 import flash.display.Shape;
 import flash.display.Sprite;
 import flash.util.trace;
 public class GraphicsExample extends Sprite {
 private var size:uint = 80;
 private var bgColor:uint = 0xFFCC00;
 private var borderColor:uint = 0x66;
 private var borderSize:uint = 0;
 private var cornerRadius:uint = 9;
 private var gutter:uint = 5;

   private function doDrawCircle():void {
 var child:Shape = new Shape();
 var halfSize:uint = Math.round(size/2);
 child.graphics.beginFill(bgColor);
 child.graphics.lineStyle(borderSize, borderColor);
 child.graphics.drawCircle(halfSize, halfSize, halfSize);
 child.graphics.endFill();
 addChild(child);
 }
 }

  ]]
 /mx:Script

mx:Button label=Search labelPlacement=bottom
click=GraphicsExample.doDrawCircle()/

/mx:Application

Right now Im getting Classes Must Not be Nested But I know the whole
setup is wrong and im probably calling it wrong onClick and have to
specify where the Sprite is drawn. Very Newbie Flex user so any help
or pointers appreciated. I also know alot of things where imported
that arent needed just cut and paste from the livedocs to see how to
use it in an mxml page.

RE: [flexcoders] NumberValidator dynamic binding problems

2006-05-02 Thread Jason Szeto

Unfortunately Validators in Flex 1.5 don't support binding in values
like your example. Instead, you need to programmatically create a
NumberValidator and update the maxValue property when maxVal changes.
Then you'll need to call the validator's doValidation function yourself
when you lose focus from the field you are validating.

In Flex 2.0, it is possible to bind in values to a validator's
properties.

Subject: [flexcoders] NumberValidator dynamic binding problems

hi all,

I am using Flex 1.5 and trying to do something like that:

mx:NumberValidator minValue=1 maxValue={maxVal} domain=int
field=model.field/

I need to have maxValue attribute dynamically calculated as it might
change and I want my validator to know what is the current maxValue
for that field. However, this doesn't seem to work. I define a
variable maxVal, assign it a value, and bind it to the validator. But
it doesnt see it. If I hardcode it like that:

mx:NumberValidator minValue=1 maxValue=8 domain=int
field=model.field/

it works fine, but dynamic binding doesn't work here.

anyone has any suggestions? Thanks a lot

Re: [flexcoders] Server-Side Architecture for Flex App

2006-05-02 Thread jeremy lu

 For any others such as .Net and PHP you will need touse HTTPService or WebService. Consider that your choice mightrun slower
than others.
just one correction,

you can always use NetConnection to connect to any AMF gateway (ie: amfphp, fluorine for .NET) instead of RemoteObject.

Can't have a class in the Script block. Must move outside to its own .as file.

If I understand correctly, you want to add this object to the display
list and then have it draw itself. Right?

Here's the code in the click handler:

 var obj:DisplayObject = new GraphicsExample();
 var wrapper:UIComponent = new UIComponent();
 addChild(wrapper);
 wrapper.addChild(obj);
 obj.doDrawCircle();

Note: your 'doDrawCircle' is an instance method, so it can only be
called on an *instance* of the class.

Hope that helps.

You better make sure that it's pulling in the right
flex-enterprise-services.xml file that points to everything. I believe
this would be specified in flex-config.xml that FB should be pulling in.

Well, it's definitely a server vs. client compile issue.

I changed the debug path from pointing to the html to the mxml (to
invoke the server compile) and it worked!

So, is it true that if you use Flex Data Services with the compile
locally that there are issues accessing remote objects? What about
Messaging, and Data Services?

thanks,
Thunder

RE: [flexcoders] mx:states vs mx:viewstack when and which?

2006-05-02 Thread Matt Chotin

I think it's often a style preference. I tend to think of a viewstack
as being useful when you want to replace a whole section. Look at view
1. Now look at view 2. States are better for modes of a component, now
we're in expanded view, now we're in thumbnail view. As soon as you
want the same component moving around I think you'll use a state. In
some cases I might have a state for the larger component where one of
the things I'll change in the state is the selectedIndex of a ViewStack
:-)

I think it's going to take the community some time to use the features
before coming up with a best practice pattern of where you would use one
over the other.

Hello, I've seen some examples with Cairngorm using either states or a
viewstack to display the current screen. I was wondering what were
the advantages/disadvantages and when you should use one over the
other? Seems like both can have the current view bound to a selection
