[flexcoders] Passing XMLListCollection to .NET

2009-08-03 Thread Angelo Anolin
Hi FlexCoders,

Been quite a while. Had been busy with a lot of things other than Flex.

Anyway, I want to pass an XMLListCollection to a .NET web service. What type
of variable should I assign it to in .NET?

I am thinking of ArrayList but it seems it does not match properly.

Thanks and regards.

Angelo

Sorry for the provocative message title. The contents of the group, and the
people who are exchanging information, are fine.

Yahoo Groups aren't very good. Information is organized poorly, and Search
doesn't work. I searched for a message I sent last week and it wasn't found.
Searching for my name turns up some messages I sent several months ago but no
recent ones.

Google Groups work much better than Yahoo Groups. Information is easier to

[flexcoders] Trying to build slideshow functionality with wipe effects.

2009-08-03 Thread Todd
Hello All,
  I've built a slideshow feature in our application. One of the requirements
was that the images transition to the next with a nice wipe/slide effect.

I built up two solutions, both with drawbacks:
1) Used a view stack, added a repeater that added a VBox and Image for each
photo to display. I was able to get the appropriate slide/scrolling effect to
work by attaching show and hide effects on a VBox that contained the image.
This worked really well when there was 10 imgeas. However, when I loaded 200
images...ouch memory management nightmare up to 1 gig of memory being used
before crashing.

Next solution, I tried something simpler:
2) Used a HorizontalList component and built some code to scroll through all
the images. This worked much better from a memory management perspective,
however, I've LOST the ability to have the transitions of sliding from one
image to the next.

My questions: 1) Has anyone seen any code that uses the List (HorizontalList)
components for sliding/moving images into the main view area? How do you get
the effects to work with moving the itemRenderers around (this doesn't seem
possible?)

2) Anyone tried writing a component where there's a main view area, and an
area to the left and right where you buffer images off screen for the sake of
wiping/sliding them in? Then when you move to the next image, the main image
slides left, the left (off-screen image container) is then moved to the right,
and he the right image slides into the middle. This is a sort of recycling of
components. Seems like a lot of work and would be prone to bugs.

I'm open for any other ideas on making a slideshow with these sliding/scrolling
transitions.

Thanks for any suggestions.

 have the component created.
 You keep duplicated code in createBreakfast , Luynch and dinner which is not

Yes, I've seen that. Not useful to me. There's not wiple/slide in transition.
 All that sample is doing is loading a selected image from the list into the

I need something that will actually bring the Image in from the right or left,
which will involve being able to actually MOVE components somehow.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Trying to build slideshow functionality with wipe effects.

2009-08-03 Thread Steve Mathews
Most of the time when I do any page transitions I take a bitmap of the
current page and display that over everything. Then swap the content below
this. Finally applying the effect to the bitmap. If you need the 'next' page
to do the effect (like a slide in effect) then you take two bitmaps.
Using bitmaps this way isn't always the simplest, but it can help with
performance of the effect.

[flexcoders] MouseCursor Change Event?

2009-08-03 Thread Barry
Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a way to detect when the mouse cursor changes?
I am trying to detect when a link is rolled over in the text area component and
listening to the mouse seems to be the only way I could do it. Any help or
pointers much appreciated.

[flexcoders] Class linking with custom Metadata

2009-08-03 Thread richardsza...@rocketmail.com
Referencing a class in [Event] metadata (ie. [Event(type=something]) has the
same affect as referencing it through code: the class is linked and included in
the output. Is there a compiler flag that will allow me to enable class linking
for my own metadata fields (ones that were included via -keep-as3-metadata)?

If the answer is yes (if not, you can skip this part), does that functionality
stick to libraries like -keep-as3-metadata does? (ie. if you
-keep-as3-metadata in libraryA and reference it from applicationB, applicationB
will also keep that metadata)

Jake,

Thanks for your reply. What I was thinking of doing was passing the clients
time from flex to coldfusion, working out the time difference between the
client computer and my coldfusion server and then storing both the reminder
time with the offset from my server time. Then when my reminder script runs it
will work out the selected reminder time. But as you say this may be an issue
with the DST.

I really like your scheduler though. As a small app it works well. I have yet
to try using air. Does the application communicate with a database on your
server? Do you use any backend technology like coldfusion etc? I would be
interested in seeing your code for interests sake if you wouldn't mind?

 My company wrote a stock charting application and ran into some issues with

 Subject: [flexcoders] Flex scheduler application

 Hey all,

 I have been assigned a new project where i have to code a reminder
 scheduling application in flex with a coldfusion backend and sqlserver db.
 Basically user will select an hour when they receive a reminder to do a
 task. Its intended to be deployed world wide so I have to take into
 consideration time zones. What i wanted to know is, how is the date in flex
 worked out if i create a new date variable like so.

 var myDate:Date = new Date();

 Will it pick up the time in the client computers timezone? Will it allow for
 daylight savings time?

 All help much appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Dave

[flexcoders] Re: AIR app, need MouseMove events NOT bounded by screen

2009-08-03 Thread Tracy Spratt
That has the same downfall of some of the other solutions in that it requires
the user to take an action to STOP the panning. This experience is the worse
with a joystick.

My current approach, using an OS level functionality to move the mouse position
back to center (the pointer is invisible) seems the closest so far.

Thanks,
Tracy

 Tracy,
Can't you take a different approach? This is for panning the map, yes?

How about, every frame:

 - if the mouseX is less than a certain amount (e.g. is in the left
 third of the screen), pan your map left.
 - if the mouseX is greater than a certain amount (e.g. the right third
 of the screen), pan your map right.

 You could add more complication than that - the further it is to the
 edge of the screen, the higher the move acceleration or whatever.

 That should get around your problem - not sure if it'll give you the
 user experience you desire, but it could be worth trying.

  border, the changes in the other axis do generate events, but that doesn't
  really help me.

  I do not know what is happening at the AIR runtime/OS/driver level, but the
  mouse and joystick have the same behavior at the application level.

  Thanks, but my issue is that the AIR app is full screen.  And AIR does not
  provide any way to set the system cursor(mouse pointer) position.

  I think I have an interim solution that notes when the mouse position
  reaches a boundary and sends a message to the socket server which calls an
  OS level program to reset the cursor position.  As hoped, AIR recognizes
  this action and the next mouse move begins at the reset position.  I still
  have some wrinkles to work out but I think this will keep us going until we
  figure out something better.

  Do I understand correctly that you want to track when the mouse
  cursor/joystick leaves the Air App window? I don't see why you shouldn't be
  able to reset the x y coordinates when they go off of the main application

  In development, using a real mouse, when the mouse pointer hits a screen
  boundary, MouseMove events are no longer dispatched in that direction. In a

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flex scheduler application

2009-08-03 Thread Jake Churchill
My app takes advantage of the built-in support for SQLite which comes with
the AIR runtime. There's just a .db file stored on the user's machine where
the data is at.

I built it using Cairngorm so it'd be really easy to modify the service to
communicate with a server rather than SQLite

Jake,

Thanks for your reply. What I was thinking of doing was passing the clients
time from flex to coldfusion, working out the time difference between the
client computer and my coldfusion server and then storing both the reminder
time with the offset from my server time. Then when my reminder script runs
it will work out the selected reminder time. But as you say this may be an
issue with the DST.

I really like your scheduler though. As a small app it works well. I have
yet to try using air. Does the application communicate with a database on
your server? Do you use any backend technology like coldfusion etc? I would
be interested in seeing your code for interests sake if you wouldn't mind?

[flexcoders] Re: Any suggestion for server (java) side run-time styling solution?

2009-08-03 Thread guy.tomer
Read the documentation here:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=styles_10.html

End of first section: You cannot load an uncompiled CSS file into your Flex
application at run time. You must compile it into a SWF file before loading it

Obviously we can load the CSS and programatically set the style where needed
but this is not a generic solution.

--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Tim Rowe tim.r...@... wrote:

 I'm a bit puzzled that you mention the need to compile in changes. Surely a
 SWF can load in an external css file? If so, could the swf not typically be
 made to access a CSS file (via whatever method) specifically for that user
 via their credentials, or via a token?

 This would allow run-time loading, and the ability to store, modify and
 retrieve it however you like on the server-side.

 Hi,

 We read the documentation about loading styles from out side but
 unfortunately they all discuss loading swf compiled files.

 While it is possible to let an editor edit the style on the server and then
 run the compiler on the server to generate a swf file, it looks like
 redundant complexity. The server is a cluster and it'll require additional
 set-up for every server.

 Does anyone have a different solution?

 Just to clarify - the requirement is to have the client load the style in
 run-time. This style should be manageable on a management interface running
 on a java server.

 Thanks,
 Guy

Referencing a class in [Event] metadata (ie. [Event(type=something]) has the

If the answer is yes (if not, you can skip this part), does that functionality

  Yahoo Groups aren't very good. Information is organized poorly, and

  Google Groups work much better than Yahoo Groups. Information is easier

[flexcoders] Filtering of ToggleButtonBar/ViewStack items

2009-08-03 Thread Thomas, Erik
I'm using a ToggleButtonBar with a ViewStack in the classic sense, where
ToggleButtonBar.dataProvider = theViewStack.

I want to configure what buttons are available to click based on runtime
conditions and cannot find any property that makes this possible.

What I'd like to do is provide a filterFunction on the
ToggleButtonBar.dataProvider but unlike most dataProvider properties in
various list-based constructs, ToggleButtonBar.dataProvider is not
stored as a filterable collection.

My kludge is to call toggleButtonBar.removeItemAt(n) based on the
conditions after it's been constructed. It works, but there must be a
more elegant way to filter the ButtonBar data provider so various
runtime conditions will control which ViewStack views are available to
the user.

Thanks for your suggestions.

[flexcoders] MultiPage printing

2009-08-03 Thread veritech82
Hi,
  I am trying to print a series of pages of labels in AIR.

I have a single page working where I have a VBox component with a tilelist.

My main code creates a new FlexPrintJob, adds the printview and adds the
tilelist array collection to the printview and sends the job

 // Create a PrintJob instance.
private function doPrint():void {
var TileListdp:ArrayCollection;
currentnum = int(txt_startnum.text);
// Create an instance of the FlexPrintJob class.
var printJob:FlexPrintJob = new FlexPrintJob();

// Start the print job.
if (printJob.start() ){
for (var i:int=1; i=but_numpages.value; i++) {
var thePrintView:MyPrintView = new MyPrintView();
this.addChild(thePrintView);
TileListdp = new ArrayCollection(createlist());
thePrintView.tilelistprint.dataProvider = TileListdp;

printJob.addObject(thePrintView,ShowAll);
}
printJob.send();
removeChild(thePrintView);
}

}

As a single page it works, as multipage it doesn't. All examples that I have
seen use the PrintDataGrid which doesn't support using tilelists.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

[flexcoders] Flex Accordion Menu?

2009-08-03 Thread Ben
I am creating a website in Flex, and one of the requirements is an accordion
like menu. See this image for what it needs to look like:
http://i25.tinypic.com/1735hy.png

The gray items do not have children. The dark blue items are children of the
light blue item.

Would someone tell me a good way to make this? I tried using a Tree with
custom item renderers but have so far been unsuccessful.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tracy,
apologies that it took me quite a while to reply and continue this. been
sidetracked on another project.

anyway, when I have passed the xmllistcollection as string to .net, what method
would i use to parse the information in the .net side?

thanks.

Hi Tracy,

I would certainly appreciate if you could point me in the right direction on
using XMLListCollection and sending it back to .NET as a string.

Thanks.

Why not use XMLListCollection and send the xml to .net as a string?  There is
little value in building an ArrayCollection of generic obects.  You can
sort/filter an XMLListCollection.

XML is more verbose than some other methods, but if bandwidth is truly an
issue, then you should be looking at a binary protocol.

Hi Sam,
Basically this is the process which I am using.

.NET
Retrieve records from Oracle DB and store the same into a dataset.  Return the
dataset as XML string via the command DataSet.GetXML.

Flex
In the event handler of my webservice method call, I parse the string into XML,
then ArrayCollection via the following codes:

private var _xmlData:XML;
[Bindable] private var arrDP:ArrayCollecti on = new ArrayCollection;
_xmlData = XML(event.result) ;
var oTemp:Object;
var xl:XMLList = _xmlData.children( );
var i:int;
for(i = 0; i  xl.length(); i++)
{
 oTemp = {NAME:xl[i]. NAME.text( ), TEAM:xl[i].TEAM. text(),
    JERSEY :xl[i] .JERSEY.text( ), MANAGER:xl[i] .MANAGER. text()};
 arrDP.addItem( oTemp);
}

and in my datagrid, I am setting its dataProvider to the arrDP variable.

I used Array Collection because I implemented a search and filter functionality
which searches and filters the data accordingly for the dataprovider which is
then reflected back to the datagrid.
Now, when I need to return the ArrayCollection to .NET, I simply pass the same
as a parameter to a .NET function which accepts ArrayList as parameter.

.NET
Once the function receieves the arraycollection (which is then now an array
list), I get the arrays inside the arraylist and get the values inside the
array.

I think by doing things like this, it may not be the best way.

You mentioned you'd map the XML to typed objects in .NET.  How can I do this?

Instead of using arraycollection as dataprovider in my datagrid, can I use
another which would be much easier when I pass back to the .NET function?

Whats the best way to interact large set of data (datasets) between .NET and
Flex?

Thanks a lot.

Instead of using an array list and trying to emulate the type-less
abilities of AS3, I'd try to map the XML to typed objects in .NET. Or
does the XML from your Flex app differ too wildly to do this?

Are you using the XmlSerializer to deserialize this? Or are you using
WCF? Or are you doing it some other way, or manually?

I'd provide an example, but I don't know enough details on your
situation to give something useful :)

Thank you! That works perfectly. I'm using normal buttons for the top level

children. I also set the verticalGap and the paddingTop to 0 on the window
