To: flexcoders

Say you have the following XML:

http://www.somesite.com/someurl";>

1
MyItem

2
MyOtherItem

if I do:

rows:XMLListCollection;
rows = new XMLListCollection(node.*.(localName() == "Row"));

Then the sol namespace gets copied. However, if I do,

rowCopy:XMLListCollection;
rowcopy = rows.copy();

rowCopy will lose the namespace. Is that a bug or proper behavior?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [flexcoders] 360Flex vs. Adobe MAX - which would you attend?

2007-04-11 Thread Tom Ortega

I have to agree with David, both events will be great. I love MAX because I
get to hang out with Ed Sullivan from the User Group Program and that's
worth the price of admission. =) For those of you not in the UG program and
not knowledgable to the The Great Ed, shame on you.

The comparison that David makes below pretty much says it all. 500 (we
bumped up the numbers for round 2) vs 3000. There are things a 3000
developer, company driven conference can do that we (360Flex) cannot: rent
out California Adventure, get the Venetian, bring entire product development
teams. However, there are things we can do that MAX can't: know that
everyone you bump into is there for flex only, a job fair where you can
leave with job leads (if not a new job!), and a place where speakers tell
how they use Flex in the trenches day in and day out ( i.e. you see REAL
code!). We also let you bring guests to our parties for free. We like our
wives and reckon other's like their lifelong partners to party with them
too. Adobe appreciates the smaller conferences too and what they allow them
to do at a corporate level, ala ApolloCamp. Can you imagine giving away
3000 flex builders, books, shirts, etc?

There are other community driven aspects of 360Flex Seattle that I'm not
allowed to publicly say yet (yes, my partners have put the seal on my
mouth!) If you think the community vibe flourished last time, you ain't
seen nothing yet! We're still nailing down details, but I think it's some
darn cool stuff.

The way I see it is like this: You're on flexcoders because you want flex
and flex only. Wouldn't you want the same from your conference? Many won't
and that's why MAX will get 3000, but the diehards will and that's why we
sold out 400 last time and will hopefully sell out the 500 hundred this
time.

The goal of both conferences is the same: to grow the community. Ours is
just a more informal grassroots approach to it. Some like low-foam, extra
hot, half-caff breve lattes and others like a cuppa joe. Just go with your
gut and you'll have a blast either way.

Thanks for listening,
Tom Ortega

   Hi,

MAX will go deep in the details on Flex (and Apollo!) too. MAX is big
enough and there are enough sessions that you can spend the entire three
days going deep on Flex, and/or spend time in a mix of sessions that also
cover other core Adobe technologies.

I think both events will be great.

Flex360 is a community event, smaller, and more focused--the last one had
400 people. There will be participants from the Flex and Apollo teams, but
not nearly as many.

MAX is Adobe's flagship event. We expect about 3000 developers. There
will be both beginning and advanced sessions on pretty much everything from
Adobe, Flex, Apollo, Flash, Creative Suite, ColdFusion, but there are enough
sessions that you can be very focused on just your area of interest. In my
opinion, one of the most exciting things about MAX that no other event in
the world has, is the depth and breadth of participation by the product team
engineers--a large number of members of the Flex team, the Apollo team, the
Flash Player (etc etc) team will be at the event, both as speakers but more
importantly just walking around at the event, at the meals and party, and
there are lots of opportunities to get to know them, ask questions, make
requests, etc. I have been to every MAX (previously called UCON) for 15
years except one (my 2nd child was born during MAX 4 years ago so I didn't
attend). The energy level, diversity, talent, creativity represented at the
event is phenomonal. I walk away every year incredibly inspired. If you
have any chance to attend I would highly reccomend it. If you can't (based
on timing, location, budget), Flex360 will also be excellent.

If you're looking for resources for learning Flex, go to 360Flex.
Max is an Adobe conference, and I suspect will have a ton of
non-Flex content, plus will focus more on "cool people using our
product / product roadmap / company roadmap " without going deep into
details.

[flexcoders] ASDoc'ing an include

I'm trying to ASDoc an included file and it's erroring because the

Can include files not be doc'd alone, i.e. without their parent? If I
doc the parent file that has the "include" statement, will the ASDoc

Re: [flexcoders] Re: SOAP with attachments aka FileReference- what's the point?

2006-09-26 Thread Tom Ortega

You gotta be creative.  =)You get the http Status code back from fileReference.  Use that to communicate what you want back to the client. We have 4 messages in my flex code that we show depending on what http status code the servlet sends back.
You could do something similar:status code 200 - all is wellstatus code 2500 - invalid formatstatus code 3500 - duplicate file existsYes, the limitation of fileReference sucks, but if you need to use it, this is a nice hack to get what you want.

Can someone please explain to me how/when its useful to upload a file
and get nothing back besides a confirmation? How would you communicate
that there is already a file uploaded with that name? How would you
communicate that the file's data is not correctly formatted?

I cannot believe there is no way to get any returned data from the url

FileReference with such an immense limitation?

Disappointed,

Re: [flexcoders] Re: SOAP with attachments aka FileReference- what's the point?

2006-09-26 Thread Tom Ortega

Depending on your uploadID, you can condense the steps.Drop step one.On step two, save the file in the db itself as a BLOB type object.  (If you uploadID is an int) Send the uploadID back as the status code.  In the event handler for httpStatus, then call your ws from step three with the status code of the event.
May I ask why your storing the files on a path?  We almost did the same but that would've limited scalability.-Tom2On 9/26/06, ben.clinkinbeard
 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hey Tom,

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, I need more back than a status
code (I was just using those messages and an example). What we are
actually doing is allowing the user to upload an Excel file and
sending back the parsed data. Here is the approach we are taking now,
knowing the limitations of FileReference.

1. WS call to request an uploadID - the server side code inserts a row
into an uploadedFiles table and returns the auto id of the new row

2. Upload the file and pass that uploadID along as a url variable -
the server code then saves the file to the system, storing the path in
the row corresponding to the passed uploadID

3. Upon upload completion we'll make another WS call, passing the
uploadID, and the server code will parse the corresponding file and
send the data back as a SOAP response

Setting up the test files now... :)

I wish badly that you were correct, but alas, I fear not.I replaced
components with freedCom for both the namespace and directory names.
Compiled and passing a const into the FreedTextLabel still results in a null
value, while passing in a plain string value of "Name" works.  Even
passing a binding to a variable such as ls="{someVar}" where someVar is set to
the const will result in a null value being displayed. I did a bit of
debugging though and discovered this.  If I pass it a simple string
value, the setter gets fired.  If I pass it a reference to a var or
const, the setter doesn't fire.  Maybe the var reference doesn't register
as a true value assignment and thus doesn't fire/trigger the setter?

I wish badly that you were correct, but alas, I fear not.I replaced
components with freedCom for both the namespace and directory names.
Compiled and passing a const into the FreedTextLabel still results in a null
value, while passing in a plain string value of "Name" works.  Even passing
a binding to a variable such as ls="{someVar}" where someVar is set to the const
will result in a null value being displayed. I did a bit of debugging
though and discovered this.  If I pass it a simple string value, the setter
gets fired.  If I pass it a reference to a var or const, the setter doesn't
fire.  Maybe the var reference doesn't register as a true value assignment
and thus doesn't fire/trigger the setter? -Tom2

[flexcoders] DataGrid Style: headerSeparatorSkin doc is wrong

2006-09-10 Thread Tom Ortega

The docs for DataGrid say:Type: Class   CSS Inheritance:
no
The class to use as the skin for the separator between the DataGrid header
and the rest of the rows.
The default value is mx.skins.halo.DataGridHeaderSeparator.But the comment in the DataGrid source says:/** *  The class to use as the skin for the separator between the DataGrid header
 *  and the rest of the rows. *  @default mx.skins.halo.DataGridHeaderSeparator */[Style(name="headerSeparatorSkin", type="Class", inherit="no")]The source is correct, so the question is:  What's the real style property for the separator between the header and the rest of the rows?

Re: [flexcoders] Moving flexcoders to Google Groups- would you come along?

2006-09-09 Thread Tom Ortega

I'd have to agree.  I have almost the complete flexcoders in my gmail.  It's the fastest and easiest way to find help, besides looking at the docs.  I realize thought that not everybody has that, so I'm sure a better solution would probably work.

Frustrations with Yahoo's boards seems to be a fairly universal

raised the issue of moving to Google Groups. Personally, I think it
would be a great idea and am wondering if getting everyone to migrate
is feasible.

With things like Flex-oriented search bar add-ins
(http://www.eyefodder.com/blog/2006/08/finding_flex_facts_faster.shtml#more

and smart Google searching
(http://www.darronschall.com/weblog/archives/000240.cfm), I don't
think migrating archived content is that big of a deal.

So, would you come along?

[flexcoders] MAX Hotel/Lodging on the cheap

2006-09-05 Thread Tom Ortega

I'll be going to MAX and will probably have some spare space.  I was wondering if anyone still needed someplace to crash.  The Venetian is costly at $250 a night. I'll have a 2 bdroom timeshare thing for the entire week, with probably a few pull out couches.  Granted, it won't be at the Venetian, but it will be within walking distance.  It'll cost me roughly $900 for the week.  I think we could fit 6 people comfortably, and that would break down to only $150 for the week per person, wy cheaper than $1750 for a week at the Venetian.
If anyone is interested, feel free to message me offline.  No need to clutter up the board with this. Thanks,Tom

Re: [flexcoders] Re: trees, UpdateDisplayList and keeping a tree open

2006-07-29 Thread Tom Ortega

That's exactly what I'm talking about! Full code example can be found here.

http://lordbron.wordpress.com/2006/07/28/flex-20-reopening-a-tree-after-updating-the-dataprovider/

Pretty much, it involves the openItems property, the render event and a boolean value.

It may need some refining, as the example is merely a single branch tree, but at least it's doable and rather simple!

Enjoy!

On 7/28/06, Tracy Spratt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Huh, come on Tom, this is a pretty often desired behavior, please post your solution!  Do you mean that storing openItems and then re-assigning them in the "render" event restores the whole tree to its open state?

That's damn big. I never did get something like this working in 1.5.

Re: [flexcoders] switching from beta 3 to the real thing?

Custom Item renderers are a bit funky.  There's a border now around the itemrenderers.Popup window syntax that worked in Beta 3 no longer compile in final release. That's two differences I found in the 5 minutes I looked at it.  I'd say wait, especially since so much rides on everything working.  Spend more of your time on your bugs.

Also: there is at least one bug (the one I reported) that has been fixed in Final :)Why not install on another machine if you have one, then just see if it works? If you can spend a half day checking and maybe fixing a couple problems and you are done. If you run into trouble just go back to beta3.

If I try the same thing through mxml it works fine.

So this in AS:
public function getMiddle():Number {
 var x:Number;
 x = mainCanvas.width*.5;
 return x;
}

--returns 0

in MXML:

--returns the amount in pixels.

Anyone out there know how to get the pixel value though AS?

I'm trying to use an internal Java Web Service. When I call from cf using cfinvoke, all is well. When I try to call from flex, however, I get this runtime error (see below) on app startup.  No calls to the ws yet, just error on parsing the wsdl.
I was under the impression they (CF and Flex) both used Axis to process the WSDLs.  Is this not the case?  If they do, why does one error but not the other?TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert MC{

Re: [flexcoders] Re: F2B2: Deploying sample apps

2006-04-18 Thread Tom Ortega

I just copy the .html and .swf files from my /bin directory and post them to the web server. That seems to work for me, minus the sandbox warnings.  =)-TomOn 4/18/06,

Yes, this is a tipical error out of the security sandbox restrictions.

Read more on the livedocs or your help.

Also I were wondering HOW can I deploy to the local server and load
the  server page (i.e: ¡http://localhost/whatever') instead of
'd:\flexAppRoot\etc'

Cheers

Re: [flexcoders] Combobox selected item

That's cuz you're using selectedItem, which returns an object.  Use "selectedLabel" if your comboBox just contains simple values.Otherwise, you'll have to dig into the selectedItem object to get what you want.

Sweet.  That did the trick!  here's some code, in case someone needs something similarThis will pull the value of a simple combo box, then find that column in the datagrid, pull it to the first row, then sort it by that column.

[flexcoders] More FB2 strangeness

2006-03-03 Thread Tom Ortega

I'm not sure if this is an eclipse bug or a FB2 bug.  When you maximize the code window, it hides the Navigator, Outline and Problems panes.  I have multiple mxml files open.  When I click on a different file tab, the Navigator, Outline and Problems come back, then I have to click the Maximize button again.  This continues every time I toggle between files.
Just an FYI for the QA team.-Tom

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Builder 2 and CFEclipse

2005-12-14 Thread Tom Ortega

Alright, not a good idea.

I didn't switch workbenches before disabling.  When it restarted itself, it crashed really bad because it couldn't find the workbench.  It must've not been happy about that.

After restarting a second time, I went to create a new project.  It took awhile to load because background tasks were running, which I'm sure was the refresh.  I ran out of memory and asked if I wanted to close the app.  I said no, and tried again.  This time it worked fine and asked me if I wanted to switch to the Flex Perspective (or whatever its called).

I was about to map the drive again, but decided to do a properties on it.  Since it seems that FB2/Eclipse likes to check every file, not just the current directory level, I think I found the problem.  It's over 100 gigs.  =)  Didn't quite realize that when I mapped it.  I really only need 2 directories from there, but was too lazy to map each directory separately.  Guess I gotta get unlazy!  =)

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [flexcoders] Flex - Mac - Database (Semi OT)

2005-12-13 Thread Tom Ortega

Zinc provides a way to talk to mySQL directly with no need for a middle tier.  Of course, you'd have to precompile your swf to have Zinc compile it.  Mixing MDMScript in with your flex code, asp, etc. might prove a bit time-consuming though.  You'd have to include the MDMScript in the flex file, compile the flex file into a swf, take the swf and wrap it up in Zinc, and then finally test.  If you found a mistake, you'd have to do it all over again.

Possible, in theory.  Practical, I'm not to sure of.

All,

I'm currently looking at ways in which we could create a standalone app using flex and a database, for Mac OSX and PC.

Basically we're looking at creating a cd/dvd with a mac/pc installer which will provide a client with a desktop app and database. The flex-based desktop app would be wrapped using something like 'Zinc' to provide the flash player etc.

The issue I'm having is working out how I'm going to do the database on a mac. On a PC we could simply bundle a database and perhaps an ASP tier which could do the interaction.

However I'm at a total loss with a mac, I don't even use the things. Has anyone done anything similar?

My initial research would suggest a flex app, a java layer and perhaps a database such as SQLite. However I'm not a JAVA programmer, I'm usually .NET and Flex.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Cheers,

Steve

[flexcoders] Flex Builder 2 and CFEclipse

2005-12-12 Thread Tom Ortega

Hello,

I'm using the two together.  I have a project folder that's "linked" to a mapped drive.  The folder keeps hanging on 99% when refreshing.  Is this a Flex Builder 2 bug or a CFEclipse bug?  Just wondering if anyone had the same problems and if they knew of a fix.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: [flexcoders] Themes (was TemplateMonster.com)

2005-12-09 Thread Tom Ortega

In 1.5 you don't "have to" modify the fla, you can create your own.  There's two types: graphical and programmatic.  The best show I attended at MAX 2005 was on this topic.

Here's my notes from the Max session on this topic:

Session: Customizing Flex Applicatons: Styling, Skinning, and Beyond

- Various Tidbits

o   Skinning and Embedded Fonts are good to use, but have little documentation on them

o   Customize components using type selectors (Panel, Button)

o   Refine components with StyleNames (Dialogue Box TitleBar and OK Button)

o   Classes are skins, collections of skins are themes

o   Theme colors override class colors

- CSS

o   Define "Look and Feel" and "App-specific" styles

o   Global and @font-face = app wide font styles

o   Only 1 ".elementName" name allowed, first half of named ignored, i.e. defining body.type and table.type in the same CSS will result in the
body.type being ignored and table.type taking precedence for all .type elements;  It's better ensure all element names are unique

o   Long CSS files can hit 32K file limit max size, no error will be given

- Embedded Fonts

o   Each embedded font adds 30KB to your file

o   Embedded fonts are required for Alpha effects

o   There are two font managers to try if one doesn't work:

§ BatikFontManager

§ JREFont Manager

o   .htmltext is not embedded font friendly

- Halo Theme

o   No background gradients

o   Button border set at 3

- Pulse Themes

o   Graphical Theme – Artwork based

o   Create FLAs and export to .swc for Flex

- Skins Types:

o   Graphical – Flash MovieClips

§ In Flash fla, create a main symbol and name it for exporting

·    i.e. TomSkin

§ Then place all "state" symbols in main symbol

·    i.e. TomSkinButtonUp, TomSkinButtonDown

§ Export fla contents to an swc file

·    i.e. TomSkin.swc

§ Then put this code in your Flex app

·     [Embed(source="TomSkin.swc" symbol="TomSkin")]

o   Programmatic – ActionScript Classes

§ Your class must extend RectBorder class

·    class TomSkin extends RectBorder

§ Your class must then override drawBorder() function

·    function drawBorder()

§ Then put this code in you Flex app

·     static var skinToUse:TomSkin;

- StyleButton subclass

o   lets CSS control button "Properties" not normally controlled by CSS

o   i.e. Width, Height, etc.

 - Presentation PP and code samples – very worth the time to explore-Tom

On the topic of themes... I never really looked into themes since that wasn't a priority. But was thinking it'd be great to start making an open library of themes for Flex2.Has anyone produced graphical skins or an entire theme that includes skins for Flex2?
Has the process changed from 1.5 to 2? In 1.5 from my understanding you basically modified HaloTheme.fla and exported it to a swc.  I was reading in 2.0 that you use compc to accomplish it, unfortunately page 567 of the app dev guide has been completed yet which covers 9 slicing.
