[flexcoders] Developing Rich Clients book

2006-02-25 Thread pixelgeek
Maybe a potentially touchy subject considering the group mods but is
the "Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex" book a worthwhile
purchase now?

I ask primarily because I am not able to get the sample app from
Chapter 2 to run (or compile) and if the rest of the book has similar
issues due to the changes to Flex and MXML (note: I don't see this as
an issue with the authors or the book just a fact of life) I am not
sure the point behind continuing to work through it.

So are the rest of the samples in the book salvagable or has the
language changed that much that I will run into similar issues through
the rest of the book?

TIA

RE: [flexcoders] Developing Rich Clients book

2006-02-26 Thread Matt Chotin
I think it depends on your goal for reading the book. If you want to
just copy sample code and run it then the book now serves less of a
purpose. But I think the approaches that are talked about in the book
still hold in Flex 2 so for general background it's still worthwhile.

Agreed. I considered myself a flex developer early on in the piece
that "knew" flex, but i'm happy to put hand on heart and declare that
I still have it on my bookshelf and at times refer to it for
min-refresh-my-memory style queries.

Semantics of the book hold, just syntax is a lot different. Plus it
wouldn't hurt to know where flex has come from in order to guage where
its going.

If however you have to pay and not your work and the budgets a bit
tight then i'd say "no" :)

RE: [flexcoders] Developing Rich Clients book

2006-02-27 Thread Steven Webster
All,

Definitely not a touchy subject - it's a fair question !

The book will be rewritten completely for Flex 2.0, and we'll be using
the opportunity to "refactor" how we've approached the subject.
However, I'd echo a number of comments that the aim of the book is to
lift the covers on how one might approach the architecture and
best-practices around Flex application development. Furthermore, for
each feature of the Flex product, the aim of the book was to impart
where and how you might apply there features, rather than an attribute
by attribute, method by method coverage of the various components,
containers, etc.

We share your frustration that the code no longer compiles; however I do
trust that the value you'll extract from the book is significantly more
than some source code samples.

Best wishes,

Steven

Great to hear about the plans for the second edition. Can't wait! : )2006/2/27, Steven Webster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hey Phil,

No date as yet ... As soon as we have something we can share with the
list, we'll do exactly that !

Best wishes,

Steven

Re: [flexcoders] Developing Rich Clients book

2006-02-27 Thread Tariq Ahmed
It's an excellent book I have to say, but keep in mind that it was
written for Flex 1.0, so some of the examples break in 1.5, and a lot of
them need to be re-written for 2.0.

Besides the examples, it's the concepts that are very important, and
provide the reader of what features are available in Flex, and how they
work generally. Though at this point in time, I'd wait for a 2.0 book
since architecturally a lot of things have changed fundamentally since 1.0.
