If it was one watt, I'd have said "QRP."

Traditionally, 100 watts is "barefoot."

And, yes, 100 watts does make it easier. But, try it on 80 meters sometime.

[Flexradio] "Barefoot SDR" achievements

2006-12-29 Thread ChasW3KC
To my mind a barefoot SDR is the one watt rig.
Is that a reasonable assumption?
I wonder because working DX is, of course, quite a bit
easier at the 100 watt level.

[Flexradio] A little personal progress for the archives and a big thank you

2006-12-29 Thread Larry Loen
Year's end leads to reflection and mine makes me want to say "thank
you" to all who participate in making this product better. Especially
as not a few of the changes that came into the product were things that
I specifically asked for and have now received. And more changes that I
should have asked for, had I known the value. So many, in fact, I'm not
sure I could reliably list them. I'd have to point them out as they
came up in operation. They would, believe me.

As long time readers know, I've been off pursuing life ham radio goals
with the SDR. I've been doing it with a modest station, too. And,
while I did manage to be the first to reach DXCC on the SDR (I still
have that certificate you all gave me!), the SDR "country count" hasn't
been my focus for some time.

I'm going to tally some results. But, not really to brag. Rather, to
tell everyone that I've put all that good work in developing this rig to
what I regard as good and substantial use. And, to thank everyone for it.

My DXCC count on the SDR currently stands at 182, but if I was doing
DXCC from scratch, it would have no doubt been substantially higher.
I've spent a long time only QRV on 30, 40, and 80 meters. At least
half a year that way, no doubt limiting the SDR-specific count.

That said, I've also worked some exciting all-time new ones, including
Libya, with a barefoot SDR. Peter I, too.

As some might remember, but I wish to record here, I've achieved 5BWAZ
(to the 173 zone level, with 178 worked) and 5BDXCC. Now since these
are life goals, that wasn't all or even mostly the SDR. Still, the
numbers are way up from where I started (on 80 meters, I think my life
achievement was around 20 DXCC or even less, for instance -- I now have
27 zones and 124 countries). In any case, those are the things I've
really been working on and there's no doubt the superior receiver of the
SDR, the panadapter, and other improvements over time are directly
responsible for a lot of my gains.

Many times, the panadapter gives me an opportunity, brief but
sufficient, to grab the DX when the competition is bunched up on the
wrong frequency. Its sensitivity allows me to scan the bands about as
quickly as one can read DX Summit, but often to much more effect. The
spectrum display also does the same for CW pileups.

I worked Vanuatu on 80 meters simply because I saw the activity. No
big deal? Well, probably not. Everyone with an SDR can do that. But,
a website check showed this was very early in the DXpedition. The very
first or the first of a handful of calls in the whole DXpedition.
Spoting a blip and working it before the pileup arrives (before anyone
knew they were even QRV in this case!) is something to brag about. But,
of course, I can't take credit for anything but sitting at the rig. I
stand on some shoulders, here, to do things like that. And, I again
thank you all.

And, I'm on the threshhold of my next major goal -- the DXCC Challenge.
I have 990 band countries worked, way up from where I was when I bought
this rig. Way up even if most of the "damage" has been on 80, 40, 30,
and 17. Way up even though the sunspot cycle is supposed to be killing
DX. Way up as in "one third of the entire band country count I have
ever done." In a year and three quarters.

I should achieve that Challenge no later by the end of January, I should
think. With a little luck, I could do it in a couple of weeks or even,
at this point, an exceptionally lucky day (and, with the SDR, I've had a
day or two like that).

And, this was done pretty much all on CW with some RTTY. For a variety
of reasons, not least is keeping the wife happy, I stay away from SSB.
Perhaps I could have done better still if I did all modes, who knows?
All I can do is thank everyone, especially Bob and Frank, for making it
all happen.

So, once again, even if words are never enough, just let me say "thank
you" and I'll see you all on the air.

Larry WO0Z

PS, I'd be interested in like things from other folks. What have you
all done in operations, software development, hardware development,
etc., this year? Be fun to get a summary from the rest of you.

I have a very strong spur that is always 15 kHz below my receive
frequency on my SDR-1000. When I turn Spur Reduction off, this spur
moves up 2 kHz and is then 13 kHz lower than the RX frequency. Does
anyone know what causes this and how to get rid of it? Another user

identical settings as my SDR.

I have done all calibrations and spur reduction routines using a very
good signal generator, but this spur persists. Any comments or help

Bob,

thank you for your support with CAT in PowerSDR.

Now testing this amplifier, it work absolutely great, this is the link
to related pages: http://www.radio-ham.eu/Expert1K-FA.htm

It has very interesting performance compared to the "big name" in this
category, and
soon will be released a dll for control the amp direct from own software.

I'm not able to manage C++, but I'm looking around some friends very able,
I hope
to get a PowerSDR with the amp interface included.

Re: [Flexradio] Delta 44 Box

2006-12-29 Thread Jim, W4ATK
I have one of Tony's intreface boards and have never put it into
service. I
have had a running battle with RFI here and was very interested in the posts
recently appearing on the reflector.

I use a Heil ProSet and bought all the gee-whiz adapters for the
pro-set to
the "Yaesu" configuration (NOT) on the SDR-1000. I made the changes on the
adapter cable to get everything in the right place to attach everything
mic-wise via the fromt panel MIC connector. I ran into a problem with the
rear panel MIC connector on the SDR-1000. It is indeed ingenious to use the
TIP and RING and leave the SLEEVE and thus accomplish ground isolation at
that point, but it did run me about the block for a moment as I was
attempting to use some shielded stereo cables from Radio Shack I had left
around the shack. So now the infamous break out box sits atop the SDR-1000
with those expensive (recommended) cables eminating from it. All very pretty
and makes a convenient point to hook up everything up but if Tony's little
gem is going to make thing better

I finally pretty much resolved the RFI issues here by using feedline RF
Isolators, a whole bunch of Radio Shack clamp on ferrites, a .01 capacitor
(on the garage door opener, but that is another story) and getting the
radiators as far away from the shack as I could (Not easy when all the
antennas are in your attic). Now I guess I ought to fabricate some cables
and put Tony's little board to work. A great project for the new year.
Thanks guys for the heads up...

Re: [Flexradio] Delta 44 Box

2006-12-29 Thread John Sweeney
I would to add to Tim's excellent comments regarding the Delta 44 Box.

I made the breakout box replacement kit available from KB9YIG even before I
ordered the Flex. In my opinion, this little board from KB9YIG is a must have
item for the Delta 44. In addition to the greatly improved RF immunity and
grounding, the I/O configuration hookup lines are 99% neater. (no giant box).
Order one today from KB9YIG. (Ham of the Year in my opinion)

Question to Tim, is the new kit run of 500 of the interface boards any
different than the the board I made last August ? any changes from the
previous kit runs?

If the D44 card is in use by a program, such as the PowerSDR, the sample rate
will not change in the D44 control panel. Stop the PowerSDR program, then you
can change the sample rate via the D44 control panel. However, the sample rate
will follow whatever you choose in the PowerSDR program.

Re: [Flexradio] Sharing the CAT commands !!! SOLVED !!!

2006-12-29 Thread Giuseppe Campana
HI

WOW.I finally solved the CAT sharing between PowerSDR / LOG / Linear
Amplifier.

Searching solutions on web I have found this:
http://www.eltima.com/products/serialsplitter/
It split any real or virtual serial port in others real or virtual ports,
generating the virtual ports if needed.

My setup is based on EdgePort USB/RS232 Converter, I have four real RS232
port COM4/5/6/7 and
use the COM5 to CAT the Amplifier.

Before start with Eltima spiltter configuration, I have disabled N8VB
virtual serial device, no virtual
serial cable at system's boot.

In the Eltima splitter configurator I have created a new virtual COM1 and
split it in two ports:
COM5 (real) and COM2 (virtual).

- Started PowerSDR and enabled the CAT on COM1
- Powered the amplifier on COM5WORK !
- Started N1MM or HRD or LOGGER32 on COM2...WORK !

All serials work together, any action on PowerSDR reflected in LOG and
Amplifier too, and
any action on LOG or CONTEST sw reflected in PowerSDR and Amplifier ! WOW

And.I can add more real or virtual ports to split, for use with others
devices or software !

I have now 14 days remain of evaluation.but I buy it sure !!

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Subject: [Flexradio] Delta 44 BBox

I have a 1 watt SDR 1000 purchased six months ago. I feed it into the
driver and PA of an otherwise defunct Heath SB401.

Question 1:
I had trouble with the Rx randomly not coming back after tx. Attaching
grounding leads to the Delta 44 breakout box seems to have cured this
problem.

[Tim Ellison>] Grounding and ground loops have been a problem with the
D44 breakout box

I had a peep inside the box and am a bit puzzled that the barrels
of the jack sockets do not seem to be grounded, but connected to the
sleeve
contact via a resistor and capacitor - can someone explain to me what is

going on here please?

[Tim Ellison>] It is a way of "cheating". The D44 inputs are unbalanced
at the card, so they use this arrangement to allow people to connect
balanced TRS connectors to the sound card.

My leads use mono plugs so what does the sleeve do? I
see reference to a Delta 44 breakout box eliminator kit by Eric AA4SW,
but
can't seem to find any more info on this.

[Tim Ellison>]
Tony KB9YIG is offering the Delta-44 interface kit. Five hundred kits
will be provided in this kit run.

The kit will come with all the parts for a module including the two-pin
headers and jumpers for the external cable grounding options.
Additionally an extra 1206 ferrite filter and an extra 1206 capacitor
will be provided in each kit for loss of one of the parts during kit
building.

Orders can now be placed, with Tony directly at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also wonder if the box can be
modified to further improve RF immunity?
[Tim Ellison>] Probably, but the breakout box eliminator is the way to
go.

Question 2:
On the Delta 44 control panel, hardware, what does "Codec sample rate"
do -
the quick start guide has it on 48,000 but I find it flips away from
this
setting to 22,050 when I save the settings.

[Tim Ellison>] This is the sampling rate. Unless you have the rate
"locked" the D44 card will auto sense sampling rates and change to
match the application. It isn't anything you need to worry about

Question 3:
Finally, I get excellent reports on my transmit audio, but I am a bit
disappointed with the receiver, it seems little better than my ancient
Kenwood TS820S at copying weak ssb signals on 20m. I wonder if it is
working correctly and what things might be worth checking? The PC is an

[Tim Ellison>] Can you describe how and what you have used to calibrate
your SDR-1000? Also, check the output signal levels of the D44 are -10
dBV. Refer to the D44 QSG

[Flexradio] Delta 44 BBox

2006-12-29 Thread Michael Fleetwood
I have a 1 watt SDR 1000 purchased six months ago. I feed it into the
driver and PA of an otherwise defunct Heath SB401.

Question 1:
I had trouble with the Rx randomly not coming back after tx. Attaching
grounding leads to the Delta 44 breakout box seems to have cured this
problem. I had a peep inside the box and am a bit puzzled that the barrels
of the jack sockets do not seem to be grounded, but connected to the sleeve
contact via a resistor and capacitor - can someone explain to me what is
going on here please? My leads use mono plugs so what does the sleeve do? I
see reference to a Delta 44 breakout box eliminator kit by Eric AA4SW, but
can't seem to find any more info on this. I also wonder if the box can be
modified to further improve RF immunity?

Question 2:
On the Delta 44 control panel, hardware, what does "Codec sample rate" do -
the quick start guide has it on 48,000 but I find it flips away from this
setting to 22,050 when I save the settings.

Question 3:
Finally, I get excellent reports on my transmit audio, but I am a bit
disappointed with the receiver, it seems little better than my ancient
Kenwood TS820S at copying weak ssb signals on 20m. I wonder if it is
working correctly and what things might be worth checking? The PC is an AMD
Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0GHz with 1 GB ram.
