[Flexradio] General 2m Transverter question

2009-12-06 Thread Anthony M
Hi Guys,

Just wanted to ask a couple of transverter questions if I may,

1 - what is the general rx/tx range of a 2m transverter? or do they all
drastically vary
2 - is there much drift with newer generation transverters?

My goal (unsure if realistic or not) is to get entire 2m 144-148Mhz SSB/FM - is
this doable?

Cheers,
Anthony

[Flexradio] ...covering all of 2 meters...

2009-12-06 Thread John Ragle

Anthony...

You might want to look athttp://www.ssbusa.comto get some
general ideas. The problem (it's not really an unsolvable problem)
with covering the entire scope of one of our ultra-wide VHF/UHF bands is
that the IF device, typically at 28 MHz, has to cover that range. This
may be accomplished with switchable local oscillators. Most commercial
transverters, e.g. Elecraft, seem to take the easy way out and have one
local oscillator and consequent 2 MHz coverage since the hosting
transceiver usually covers only ham bands (on transmit).

Subject: [Flexradio] Broadcast interference

Hi all,
I have a little problem with a broadcast transmitter not to far from me.
It has two main frequencies it transmits on 1.395 and 1.539. plus all the junk
that makes up the transmissions.

Just wondering if anybody has come across this problem and what they have done
to fix it, me I would like to turn it off but, one of the freqs is a government
one, lol.

I have looked on the web and there is heap of broad cast filters, if people
have had to use them what sort of results did you get and would you recommend
it.

Being a die hard ham and I believe in have a go first, I have tried with
limited success is building, I managed to get up to a 48 dB drop but this is
still far from what I would like, the flex 5000a display is saying a signal of
-8 dBm and -5 dBm . If I use the other HF antenna its
  -5 dBm on both.

I do not feel like packing up the QTH and moving (grin)

The harmonics from this is terrible

Looking forward to any input.

cheers and 73s'

Paul

Re: [Flexradio] ...covering all of 2 meters...

2009-12-06 Thread Greg Zenger [N2GZ]
What in the hardware side of the Flex 3000 and 1500 prevents the radio from
transmitting below 28MHz or above 29.7MHz? for circuit blocks such as low
pass filters, these can probably be bypassed?

I know rules-is-rules, but when interfacing with a transverter, its
perfectly okay to have an IF of 26.8 MHz. Ive experimented with some
synthesized oscillators that had better phase noise performance at 117MHz
than at 116MHz, so shifting my IF down a bit resulted in better receive.

I recall reading that the firmware contains the interlock to allow/disallow
out of band TX. I think these interlocks are good when the radio is being
used as an exciter or transceiver, but when its being used as an IF block,
it's a hindrance. Obviously, the harmonic reducing filters incorporated
into the FLEX will not always be adequate for 'out of band TX', so it is up
to the experimenter to build such filters externally to protect their
equipment and its his/hers responsibility to operate within their license.

Is FLEX willing to provide a way to transmit out of band for those of us
wishing to experiment with transverters?

On the Flex-1500, the XVTX/C port bypasses the 5 Watt PA, Is wideband TX
easier with the PA bypassed, I would assume so? It would be great to have
a small portable signal generator, my HP 8643A is anything but portable.
Also, with the Flex-1500 be offered as a LP module, without the PA board for
a reduced price? I think the power supply is on the PA board, so this would
mean building a PSU board without PA. Id happily pick up a second unit
without the PA board to use as a synthesized LO if it was capable of wide
band output.

I am interested in the upcoming FLEX-1500, but I know Anthony has a
FLEX-3000 that he wishes to use, so if one of you FLEX guys responds, please
try to answer for both of us, I don't want to completely hijack his thread.
My guess is the FLEX-3000 will be a little less Flexible than the FLEX-1500,
as the FLEX-1500 is advertised as an Ideal IF Deck for VHF-Microwave
Operation

[Flexradio] WSPR experience

2009-12-06 Thread Brian Lloyd
I wrote a week or so ago about problems I was having with WSPR and
Mack, WB4MAK, replied with his settings.

First, my original problem was that WSPR could not set the frequency
and that PTT via CAT was somewhat unreliable. The main symptom was
that every time WSPR tried to set the frequency, key, or unkey the
transmitter it would log a serial port error.

The big difference between Mack's and my configuration was PTT via CAT
(me) or a separate port pair (Mack). I tried his configuration and not
only does it key the transmitter reliably but now the frequency
setting via WSPR band selection works properly. I no longer see serial
port error messages from WSPR.

So, if you are trying WSPR 2.0 with PowerSDR (SVN PB-PAL for me --
should also work with the release version) here is what is working for
me right this instant:

VSPmgr settings:
COM5-COM6 pair, break line/restore connection enabled
COM7-COM8 pair, break line/restore connection enabled

PowerSDR settings:
CAT on port COM6, 4800baud, no parity, 8 data bits, one stop bit
PTT on port COM8 via DTR
Rig ID as: TS-2000
VAC Input: Virtual Cable 2
VAC Ouput: Virtual Cable 1

WSPR settings:
Audio In: Virtual Cable 1
Audio Out: Virtual Cable 2
PTT method: DTR
PTT port: COM7
Enable CAT
CAT port: COM5
Rig Number: 214 Kenwood TS-2000
Serial Rate: 4800
Data bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Handshake: None

Note: When I tried to use, Rig Number: 2301 Flex-radio SDR-1000, I
got the serial port error again. So it appears that the above settings
may be somewhat specific.

[Flexradio] Logitech MX 1100 Mouse

2009-12-06 Thread Joe Camilli
I just upgraded to the Logitech MX 1100 mouse and am having a small issue in
PSDR. When I drag the main display window to change the frequency or use the
spin wheel in the window there is a noticeable hesitation instead of a
smooth flow of the window. I know it has something to with the mouse because
this is the only change I made. Before with the old wireless mouse no
issues.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Flexradio] WIn 7 strange phenomena with SDR1000

2009-12-06 Thread EB4APL
If I understand well, you mean select mode LSB, shift the filter to the
right to the position where the USB filter roughly should be and
listening for example in 20 m, he hears the USB signals clearly? Well,
of course, this is true, it can be verified by anyone regardless the
operating system. It is the equivalent in an analog receiver to install
a USB filter in the LSB path, the demodulator is the same. There were
receivers (expensive) with independent filters for each sideband which
allowed for ISB mode.
If you didn't verified that probably is because the filter was not
shifted to the right position or the station you heard was using the
inverted sideband. Or I misunderstood the whole thing, which is normal.
