Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5K locking up

2010-01-29 Thread Mario Aviles

Hi Dudley:

Thank you for your response. Checked the Power Option and it was not on High
Performance, already changed it. Latency is now above 2000, and something
strange is happening, on the FireWire device driver I set the Sample rate to
96KHZ, and the Sample rate on PSDR is at 96Khz, but when I turn on PSDR it
changes to 48Khz on the Firewire Driver. the message SYsTEM CLOCK IS LOCKED
appears even when PSDR is stopped. PSDR version 1.18.3, FireWire Driver
3.5.0.7171 and firmware 1.3.0.8. Bluetooth Driver is off, use wireless mouse
and keyboard.

Hi Neal:

Thanks for your suggestion, checked all devices and no conflicts.

Again,thanks for help

Mario,

You said your latency is 15119us?? You should get the latency below
2000us to be consistent, some have gotten core2Duos to run under 100us.
Be sure to turn the Wireless and bluetooth drivers off, and make sure
your Power Options in the control panel is set to High Performance. Other
than that..

What are the details? Of the system and what versions of PowerSDR and FW
are you trying to run?

[Flexradio] 5000A 6 meter preamp

2010-01-29 Thread Robert delaney
Well, I finally did some on air comparison( finally got a groundwave station
on to test with) to see just how good the 6 meter RX was in my new 5000A.
The Kenwood TS-2000X ran circles around it Ugh!
I have now read that a six meter preamp is needed to bring it up to par so my
question is what is everyone using?
I also understand that the 3K had 6 meter issues but was recalled and is now
a fine 6 meter radio.
Why has this problem not been resolved in the 5K ? Is it just easier to loop
an RX preamp in and therefore not worth the effort?
I wonder now how good the VHF/UHF module will perform?
The virtual audio cable program was at least mentioned as a required
accsesory but I didn't think I would have to buy a preamp and clog up the RX
loop I had intended to use for my MFJ -1026 noise elliminator.
This investment in this radio seems to have been the tip of the iceberg.

If I sound a little harsh it's because I went from arm chair copy to can't
understand you a few moments ago with my on air test.

Google is usually the best place to look. I always recommend
www.tweakhound.com's work. A great tweaking tool is available from
www.thewindowsclub.com. Most tweaks for Vista work for Win7.

But you have to recognize that you will never get cpu processing parity
between XP and Vista/Win7. One thing you might consider is how powerful your
video card is. The best thing MS did in Vista/Win7 is they tossed out the
ancient graphics engine (that renders the user interface) and use Directx
10. By using Directx, which is a modern graphic engine, it can utilize the
power of your graphic card's processor for the user interface instead of the
CPU. Its the reason Win7 looks so good and sharp.

When changing from from VHFx to 6m, the Drive level which has been set in VHFx

damage equipment without protection is present.

This problem has been observed to affect 10m also.

Re: [Flexradio] Audio equalization?

2010-01-29 Thread Edwin Marzan

I've heard some very good sounding Flexers who were only utilizing the internal
EQ. The outstanding Flexers are usually using outboard equipment (as is the
case with most modern radios). As the technology improves I'm hoping for a
software only solution that sounds as good as the outboard equipment.

Why would you need it? The Flex 3 and 5 K have a 10-band Equalizer,
Compression (if you want), a Leveling circuit, a Downward Expanding Gate
circuit and all adjustable to your heart's content. You can also record and
instantly playback your audio, both before manipulation and after
transmission, while adjusting parameters to suit your mic.

Yes, the RoMac equalizer is indeed a very interesting product, with
performance comparable to EqPlus (and only a tenth of the price).

I have received a few messages off-list in response to my original post,
with most people saying they don't need any additional equalization.
They say PowerSDR is flexible enough already to handle most kinds of
microphone and operating conditions.

I should have explained originally that one of my particular interests
is topband, where you often need more aggressive audio tailoring and
downward expansion to overcome the horrendous noise on that band. I
suspect PowerSDR may not have this flexibility.

If RoMac + VAC + PowerSDR could be persuaded to play together, this
would be a killer audio combination for difficult communications
conditions. And even more sliders to slide with!

[Flexradio] digital modes as they appear on the waterfall...

2010-01-29 Thread John Ragle
Some time ago, someone on this list sent me a URL in which the site
shows actual on-the-air views of what various digital modes look like.
In the process of dealing with the consequences of a bad download, I
lost this URL. I would be delighted if someone could send it to me
again...I have not been able to find it using Google.

Many thanks,

Yes, it will benefit both radios. They use the same keying methodology.

Would this improvement similarly affect the 3000 as well as 5000 series of
Flex machines?
As in shared keying /TR hardware characteristics?

Re: [Flexradio] QSK -- True Grist

2010-01-29 Thread Doug McCormack
I just wanted to add my voice to the importance of good QSK. After using my
Flex-1K for the past 3 years, I am continually amazed at the performance of
the radio and I always look forward to the new improvements in the latest
versions. However, QSK has been my one big disappointment.

I have a long callsign, so in a fast-paced contest or DX, I find the station
completed a contact with another station during the time I was sending my
call. I was simply providing QRM on the frequency, because I was deaf while
I was sending,

I heard the newer versions 1.18.x had improved QSK, so I dialed my delay
down to 60 ms. and could almost hear between dits and dahs. I don't mind
the relay clicks, but the screen flashing is really annoying.

I received a .MP3 file from a Swedish station that showed I was dropping
dits. The two E's were missing from my callsign. That explained why I was
always being asked to repeat my callsign. I have returned my delay to 333
ms.

Listen to the missing dits...

My older radios TS-570 and FT-817 do QSK very nicely and I actually find I
am using the old radios more often because of this issue. But nothing can
touch the receiver performance on the Flex.

I am glad to hear Flex is continuing to work on the QSK performance.

Re: [Flexradio] QSK -- True Grist

2010-01-29 Thread Gerald Youngblood
I can confirm that Dale is correct that significant improvements are coming
soon. I can also confirm that hardware switching time is *not* a
limitation. The hardware switches in 4-5 milliseconds including TR relay
settling time. We are currently working on optimizing and streamlining the
communications between the firmware in the radio and PowerSDR. That has
already produced huge performance improvements with more to come. We are
holding the release of PowerSDR 2.0 public beta until we complete these
improvements along with a few others we consider important. This is a
*software defined* radio so it will continue to improve.

Gerald

I too am an almost 100% cw op, and have been running a FLEX-5000A since
day one, so I'm very well aware of cw issues and limitations.

For the last few weeks, I've had the good fortune of being involved with
testing recent development work by Bob and Eric that has focused
specifically on cw issues, and *great* progress is being made. I'm able
to key the radio with paddles plugged directly into the key jack at 40
wpm with the break-in delay set to 30mS, and I can hear band noise
between words. I'm running 96K/1024, and latency is so low that I can
just use the F5K's monitor, rather than having to use an external keyer
with it's own sidetone (LogiKey K-3).

So hang in there cw op's; good things are on the way ...
