Re: [Flexradio] Firewire problem- it's there, and then... it's not.

2010-02-03 Thread Dudley Hurry

Matt,

Make sure that you have kb955408 loaded, and also with the TI
controller there is another that might apply, kb952825

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/952825

Also check the Audio Sound devices in the Control panel of Windows, in
the Audio tab, the flex driver should be in the pull downs, but not
selected for the default , but the important one with the current
driver is the last or bottom one, you should see the Flex Midi in the
bottom drop down, if not , the MIDI driver did not load.At this
point either uninstall the FireWire driver in the Device Window with the
radio turned off, reboot and then turn the radio back on and see if all
three of the drivers load, or remove the FW driver REBOOT , and then
re-install the FireWire driver, and watch for the 3 drivers install.

By the way, the current FireWire driver is 3.5.0.7171, which will work
with 1.18.0 to the current 1.18.3 versions of PowerSDR.

If you still have a problem, call Support at Flex 512-535 - 4713,
I'll get you going..

afternoon to try it out.

It worked fine for quite awhile, I got VAC going and com0com, got
transmit going into the dummy load and it all worked pretty good with
a few easily solved issues along the way.

But then I decided to install my second monitor so I could keep the
radio controls up while working on dm780 and rearrange the desk a
little.

Upon rebooting, the F3K can't be found anymore. Opening the
"FlexRadio" blue icon gives "No devices found" Tried calling support
but they must be busy or out early.

I've tried:

- Checking the firewire cable at least 4 times. It's correctly
inserted, the only difference is that before it was coiled up (the
flex was right above the computer) and now it's stretched a little to
3 feet.

- Checked that my firewire controller is ok. The controller shows up
in windows device mgr with no conflicts.

- Removing the FlexRadio drivers, disconnecting the F3K from the
computer, installing the drivers, reconnecting, and powering up.
Nothing.

- I thought maybe my battery's 12.6v was not enough to get the device
to initialize and talk. So I boosted it with a charger to 13.6v and
this doesn't make any difference.

Everything else on the computer is plugged in right where it was
before I moved things. The only difference between A and B is a
second monitor is now on the desktop.

Is firewire really this flaky? Any ideas to try out?

[Flexradio] split frequency transmit problem?

2010-02-03 Thread Paul Mullins

Hi there all,
question again currently I have been playing on 6 meters with other
locals building antennas and testing in general,
I have found when I operate the flex 5000a in split mode vfo a on 53.775
and vfo b on 52.775 tx on vfo b, if you tune the antenna with the atu
and then go for a qso you get NO output.
Click on vfo a to transmit key transmitter works, then swap to b for
transmit, and then you get output. weird yes I have noticed other
problems like this and what I do some times on a single frequency is
change mode ie am, and tx, then swap back to the mode I has using and
then it works.
I know some one is about to say rest the database, I am starting to get
sick of doing this and it does not fix the problem only delays it for a
while, as it comes back, plus I lose all the settings.

Does any body else have this problem or know of the complete fix, PSDR
ver 1.18.3 with all the driver supplied on the disk, this flex is only 2
months old.

cheers

Paul

[Flexradio] Random acts of praise

2010-02-03 Thread AB2CD
Hello folks,

AB2CD here, I've notice quite a few posts of late that express a level of
frustration with those who have just begun operating their Flex radios.
Granted, I don't push the envelope as many of the Flexers do, but at the
same time I have an absolute stable system. It's not uncommon for me to
receive an email from someone copying the mail. So I felt I'd share
something uplifting to encourage those who may be experiencing some
frustration, reassuring them that once they resolve their issues they will
have the best set up out there. If you haven't yet purchased a Flex and you
are not a computer guru, I strongly suggest getting Neal to build a
dedicated computer for you. For a few bucks extra, he'll build you an
absolute dynamite machine that will make your Flex experience absolutely
plug-n-play. I have recommended him on numerous occasions and everyone is
thrilled with his services.

Here is an excerpt of such an email:

Hi Jim,

I do not normally send e mails out of the blue. However, tonight about

15 minutes ago I heard you on 40 Meters (7159), I have never heard a signal
with this hi quality audio. Actually there was very few stations on, as I
tuned across the band you came through so loud I reached for the volume
control to turn it down.

To make things a little better, my long 80/40 Meter dipole is laying down on
the roof of my home, the 2 rope supports rope broke with our first ice snow
storm. I am awaiting Spring before I can have someone climb the steep sides
of our home to take down and install my G5RV. I use an old Kenwood TS-900
Transceiver which has the best audio I have ever heard until this evening.

I have heard good reports on the Flex radio, but this is first time I
actually heard one on air. I am very impressed. When it's to buy a new
radio it will be a Flex!

Ok sorry for going on, your radio has fantastic audio, by far more than the
so called studio quality.

Yes. Do you remember me saying, "it appears to be an aliasing product

Remember, if you have sampled at 96kHz the Nyquist frequency is 48kHz.
When you resample to 48kHz the Nyquist frequency becomes 24kHz so you
must low-pass filter to eliminate all power above 24kHz otherwise you
will see a "reflection" that pivots around the Nyquist frequency. When
you again resample to 8kHz the Nyquist frequency becomes 4kHz so you
must again low-pass filter to eliminate all the power above 4kHz so
you don't see the aliasing "reflection". Apparently not all
sample-rate conversion libraries are created equal. It might be nice
to find out which ones work best and then get everyone to use that.

You know, it would be *SO* much easier to do just *one* sample-rate
conversion and do the low-pass filtering at the highest sample rate to
eliminate aliasing artifacts.

Hmm, wouldn't it be nice if the CODECs communicated the desired sample
rate to the "receiver"?

Just thinking out loud here.

The proper low pass filter will also improve the Dynamic range of the

Hi Matt

Its not that flakey.

Try unplugging the second monitor (the new one you just connected) from the
back of the computer and turn it off. Then power up your 3000 and see if it
is recognized.

It could be that the new monitor is spitting out a lot of hash and is
disturbing the accuracy of the data flowing on the firewire. I take it you
didn't get the Granite Digital cable upgrade when you bought your 3000 (or

[Flexradio] Firewire problem- it's there, and then... it's not.

2010-02-03 Thread kd0bvk
Hi,

Got my F3K in the mail yesterday, and took a little time this
afternoon to try it out.

73,
Matt

Yes. Do you remember me saying, "it appears to be an aliasing product
of the sample-rate conversion," back at the beginning of this thread?

True--it's not a harmonic. When the PSK31 signal is at the lower end
of the ~3KHz passband, the spur is at the high end. As the signal
frequency moves up the passband, the spur moves down. They cross in
more or less the middle of the passband, and so on until the situation
is reversed.

2010-02-03 Thread Bob McGwier
I was going to say this perfectly demonstrates both the great power
(sensitivity) of the panadapter and our greatest curse at the same time.
I was going to give my usual long winded commentary but I must admit
that your 3 letter comment is right to the point.

There are design compromises in our resampler (which will be eliminated
in an all new version of things later by using the arbitrary phase
resampler which will have 120 dB noise floor and cost FEWER ticks by
lots than the current one). But VAC itself has a resampler or uses the
WinBLOWS resampler (horrible) depending on the interface, driver, etc.

YO PEOPLE. When you have 140 dB of dynamic range displayed in front of
you as in our panadapter with standard settings, get an idea that is
FOURTEEN orders of magnitude in power, seven in voltage. 10^14 is a
very large number and is huge in signal processing even if it is about
the right amount when discussing next year's US government deficit spending.

I just recently enabled SSB here with my 5000a (been doing RTTY
exclusively). To allow use of contesting macros, I routed my
microphone through one of my sound cards and routed that card's
output through a cable to the rear "Line in" of the 5000a. I believe
this configuration would allow Voice Shaper use, but haven't tried it.

Yeah, me too. I am using an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile as the intermediate
device. The M-Audio is connected to the flex via a short shielded cable. I am
using a configuration of the M-Audio that allows me to run it without a
computer attached to it. If need be I am connecting my MacBook Pro to the
M-Audio and change the config. I am also running the audio output of another
Mac mini via the SPDIF port of the M-Audio. Pretty slick, actually. That's when
I need to have some change from HF noise to something really loud - my iTunes
has some of these in it. ;-)

Yes, that is an annoying factor with PowerSDR. It should allow you to
direct output to any audio device, not just the ones on the radio
hardware. (No, using VAC is not a solution.)

[Flexradio] Griffin Powermate

2010-02-03 Thread Steve Potter
Hi

A quick tip for Powermate users with Windows 7

As you know the Powermate only controls PowerSDR when it has the focus,
and as I have dedicated my Powermate just for PowerSDR, I have turned
all controls in the Global settings to no action except for the short
push.

I pinned the PowerSDR icon to the task bar at a known position (less
than 10 from the left) and have set the Powermate Push to send the keys
WIN+n (n being the position from the left) in my case 9 in the Global
settings.

In this way I can turn the Powermate 'VFO' if nothing happens a quick
push on the top puts focus to PowerSDR and I can then twirl away...
Simples

Steve

[Flexradio] FLDIGI and ZONE ALARM..."network activity"

2010-02-03 Thread John Ragle

On Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 8:07 AM, I wrote:

"I am running an F3K with pSDR 1.18.3 in WIN 7 (32 bit), vspMgr, and
VAC. In digital mode, when I start fldigi (3.12.5) I notice that my
internet connection shows activity, both Transmit and Receive. In fact,
this happens even when pSDR is not running and the F3K is turned off."

Somewhat later, I wrote: "One further observation on this ...IF I close
my internet connection, fldigi will not start. The process throws an
error message: "This application has instructed the runtime to terminate
it in an unusual way."

To bring this to closure, seeing that several interchanges were off the
reflector, here is the fact of the matter:

(a) [thanks to W1HKJ]

"fldigi opens two connections to 127.0.0.1, localhost, for socket
services. One is for interoperating with flarq and other ARQ programs
such as pskmail. The second is for interoperating with transceiver
control programs such as flrig. Neither of these two actually sends any
packets over the network..."

(b) [I am using Zone Alarm]

IF one selects EITHER "Stop all Internet Activity" OR "Engage
Internet Lock" from the ZA menu, fldigi will indeed refuse to start.
Apparently these selections prohibit access to the loop-back address on
the NIC.

(c) IF one goes to Control Panel ---> Network and Sharing Center --->
Change Adapter Settings, and disables the LAN connection, fldigi
launches correctly.

I perceive this as a flaw in Zone Alarm. The ZA flashing "internet
activity" display was harmless. Many thanks to all the people who were
involved, one way or another, in answering my query. I received a number
of quite ingenious suggestions.

DM780 works well at 41K as well. Its maddening that I can get them to
both set to 48K as I am sure it would work better.
There has to be a way to manage this.

FYI, I get the exact same behavior (also Win7 x64)--maddening. Only
setting everything up to use 44100 works for me to get PowerSDR, VAC
and MixW to agree on the sampling rate.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-3000 and Easy Pal

2010-02-03 Thread Steve Potter
Hi Bret / Gary,

I also use Easypal with Flex-3000 and use PB-Pal 3523
Using ComoCom for com port configuration I have setup com port pairs of 8 & 18
specifically for PTT, and 9/19 for CAT control, there are guides in the
knowledge base if you need them.
Again with Bret on the com port ptt control rather than CAT, and have no
problems so far...
You may want to check for RF feedback.. that used to cause me great problems,
its amazing what an ugly balun (coaxial RF choke) or two can prevent

I run it hear quite a bit on XP32bit and WIN7 64bit but I have it is set up
for COM PTT and not CAT PTT and haven't had it lock anything up.
I've ran it on 1.18.3 and the PAL SVN's including the latest 3523 versions
and both 3000 and 5000A.

Has anyone set up EasyPal with SDR and a Flex-3000? I can receive fine, but
when I try to transmitt, EasyPal locks up. Have set up PTT via CAT just
like in HRD as a TS-2000.

Jan yes that is where I configured it.
Both Virtual cables were set to 48K in the Windows 7 Sound Control
Properties.
but only one was actually at 48k Virtual Cable one was still starting at
41K.
The VAC setting in PowerSDR was also configured for 48K

2010-02-03 Thread Jan Egholm
Steven,

You must adjust bouth Line 1 and Line 2 under Control Panel, Soundcard to
you needed SR

As Simon allso did mention I think this must be added to the Flex KB, as
it's not the first program opening the VAC that sets the SR of the VAC.

Sorry to bug the reflector again.

I was playing with the sample rate settings in VAC and the Windows 7 sound
configuration properties and VAC settings in PowerSDR.
I noticed a mismatch between line one and line two Line one was set for
48000 but VAC control pannel says its 41000 Line two is correctly displayed
at 48000.
I started launched PowerSDR before I started VAC after I made the changes. I
even did a reboot of the system and I could not get Line one to change
value.

VAC missmatch

So I reset my database and redid everything from scratch

VAC missmatch two png

VAC Line one is still 41000 but set to 48000 in Windows 7 sound
configuration properties and in the VAC settings in PowerSDR.

Windows 7 64
PowerSDR 1.8.3
Firewire driver 3.5.0.7171
Flex-3000 Firmware 1.2.5.6
