[Flexradio] Trying to get a virtual serial port pair

2010-04-08 Thread Mark Lunday
OK, I feel stupid, but here goes..

After fresh Win7 install, I no longer see any COM ports. I can use the K5FR
Virtual Serial Port Manager software to create a virtual port pair, but it
does not show any COM ports. And it gives me a weird error upon launch:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object at
vspMgr.vspMain.PrinPorts()

Maybe this error related to the observation that I don't see any COM ports
or printer ports under device manager?

[Flexradio] Flex Service!

2010-04-08 Thread Jim Fuller - N7VR
Hi All,

On 3/24/2010 I posted a notice about what I thought might be an issue
regarding Low output power. Tim recommended I contact support and copied
Dudley of Flex-radio support. Before I had a chance to email support, Dudley
replied that the procedure I used in determining there was an issue was
correct. He recommended running a diagnostic process to help verify and
determine the issue.

Following the instructions in Dudley's E-Mail, we determined that Q4 was not
operating within specifications. Dudley had an RMA setup for return. At this
point I am impressed, as most companies would have had you send it in
without any proof of a problem nor any idea of what was happening.
Flex-Radio had both of these bases covered.

I get the RMA and attached form to fill out. I like they what to know who
the radio belongs to. It gave me an understanding that they intended to
protect my investment. I returned the radio assuming that they would get to
it similar to the dealings I have had in the past with Kenwood and Yaesu.
With Kenwood and Yaesu, I send it in it gets in queue and 4 to 6 weeks later
I am contacted about the issue, repair, and return. Well, I am sorry to
report my preconceived understanding were incorrect. Instead, I received a
notification it had been received. Then came an invoice on Monday 04/05/2010
that indicated it have been repair under warranty and was headed back to me.

I received a call last night from UPS indicating that it would be delivered
today and needed a signature. (Another indication Flex-Radio takes my
investment seriously.)

Today, 04/08/2010 I have received it. I have checked it out and it works
great.

What I learned from this is that Flex-Radio considers the customer as
important. They make sure to understand the issue. They protect the
equipment. They place recourses to efficiently repair and return the unit.
They care enough to make sure it is not lost in shipping and signed for.

I was first licensed in 1964. I have had to return a few units for repair,
some under warranty and some not. This is the best service I have seen.
Flex-radio cares enough to support their product.

Tim, Dudley and the rest of the Flex staff Thank You!

You want the Heil proset with the Yaesu adapter (it is Yellow). Of
course, there are many other choices, but Bob Heil has it pretty well
figured out.

Make sure you have updated driver and BIOS installed. Do not use drivers
provided by Microsoft Update and make sure that you install everything as
administrator.

Oh, one more thing. Outlook is a triggering mechanism for long duration DPCs

1. I am starting with K5FR out-of-the-starting gate. DDUTIL (which I

quickly degrades into a raspy type of audio and the CPU util jumps up to 75%.
The audio also sounds jumpy. Buffer is on 2048. I am not running anything but
outlook and SDR. SDR is showing like 25% of CPU. Next biggest consumer is
System Interrupts a 10%. When I run SDR in XPSP3 compat mode, things seem to
be a LOT better, like 7% from SDR. Is that how I am supposed to run? (maybe I

For sure, don't run outlook while you're testing .

Make sure you are NOT using the (legacy) version of the MS firewire driver.

Shouldn't need to run in compatibility mode .

2010-04-08 Thread Tim (W4TME)

AH HA! Using a 64-bit OS, I see.

Yes, this is a current issue with 64-bit operating systems and PowerSDR
1.x After installation, PowerSDR saves files into the Program Files sub
folders and Micr$oft considers this place hallowed ground and will not
let an infidel wave file be placed there.

Vista and Win7 use file system virtualization to "fool" applications
into thinking files are where the apps put them when they are not.

Look in:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program
Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v1.18.5

hey show up when you use the "Add" button in "Wave File Controls."

2010-04-08 Thread Tim (W4TME)
For future reference, that is a fairly complex search string for the KB.
It does not use the same sophisticated search engine like Google uses.
Single or dual keyword searches work better.

The location of the audio file depends on what version of PowerSDR you
are using. I am assuming that you have a 1.x version, so look in the
PowerSDR application folder first where the database is stored. Note
that if you recorded using the QuickRecord feature or recorded the audio
pre-processed, you will not be able to "play" the wave file on anything
other than PowerSDR or another application that understands I/Q data.

This is covered in the FLEX-x000 Owner's Manual in the section on the
Play and Record controls.

[Flexradio] New FLEX-3000 review available for download

To all Flexers,

There is a new article in the April 2010 edition of Amateur Radio
(Australia) by none other than our own Brian, VK7RR. This is an
excellent operators overview of the FLEX-3000 and how he uses it for
portable operation in addition to the added bonus of creating unusual WX
at his QTH.

You can access the article from the left hand side bar on the FlexRadio
System's home page or you can use this direct link. The article is a
bit large and may take a little while to download.

[Flexradio] Marriage of Flex 5000 and Orion 2

2010-04-08 Thread David W LeJeune, Sr
Hi, Folks

Carl's (N4PY) controller software with its ability to marry
up Flex Radios with the Orion 2 to allow the use of the Flex as a 2nd
receiver, along with its great panadapter, spurred me into developing a
small utility that does just that - without all the control capability of
N4PY software. Just allows you to sync the Orion 2 with a Flex Radio. It's
written in C++, using the C++Dev development package. Since it uses CAT
control, should be easily adapted to other radios besides the Orion 2.
C++Dev is open source, including the gcc compiler and wxWidgets. It's
pretty slick and easier to use that Visual C++ Express. If anyone would
like to play around with it (executable or source) drop me an e-mail.

[Flexradio] Working Motherboards/Prodcut models - quad core

First, please reply off list, as I know that there will be a thousand
different answers! ;)

After playing with my Acer M5811 for 3 weeks, I could not get it to work
reliably with my 3K on the firewire port. The box worked fine, but it
would Blue Screen randomly. And, this would happen with the 3K on and
no other flex software running. I even tried another firewire card, but
you can't disable the onboard firewire in the BIOS. And, when it
crashed, it would not produce a minidump. Thanks to Tim and Dudley for
working to help me get the required files as their vendor wanted to sort
this out.

So, I have returned that box. It was too bad it didn't work, as other
than that, it was perfect.

I'm now looking for a new Quad core box running 64bit W7.

If you have had had success with a specific model (Dell, Acer,
Lenovo...) or motherboard, can you let me know? It has to be an I5-650
or equivalent. So, that is a much higher end computer that normal.

Thanks all, Mike VA3MW
