Re: [Flexradio] 73 John, W5GI

2011-01-13 Thread K8MLM
I first met John (KC2EH when I first met him) in the early fall of 1983
several days after we moved into our new home in Woodbridge, VA. I was
putting up an antenna and John and his wife Pat came walking by. You guessed
it. That was the beginning of a long set of QSOs. John and his family moved
out of the neighborhood in the summer of 1987, but we stayed connected
with a regular weekend schedule. No matter where he was or where I was we
made the contact. One time on a Saturday morning over about a two hour period
when he was in Panama (HP1XUT) we made contact on every band from 75M to
10M. In 27 years we have QSOed from 160M to 432 and I don't think we missed
more than 20 weekends, and that was because some were eyeball QSOs... and
they also included the XYLs.

John was also my wife's gift consultant. A number of years back I thought
about getting a Flex-Radio. John, Gerald and my wife got together and a
brand new FLEX-1000 arrived for my birthday. I won't tell anymore about the
other gifts he talked my wife into, but I sure did receive some great toys
for Christmas and birthdays.

Over the 27 years we have been to many hamfests, hauled lots of good stuff
back and forth and have some good stories to tell about some amazing sales
or acquisitions. While John was living in Texas it but a crimp in some of
our hamfests together but I did manage to join him twice at the Belton
hamfest and Dayton at least a dozen times. If I wasn't at the hamfest with
John, at least I got a full account during the next QSO.

My last QSO with John was 2 January. His son Chris talked him into going
out to the ham shack and turning on the radio. Lucky for me I was sitting
by my rig tuned to 14185 when he came on. Thanks Chris for bringing your
dad out to the ham shack.

We are all going to miss John's generous assistance and advice, enthusiasm,
out going spirit and friendship. It's been an honor to call him my good
friend.

73 John. You will always be alive in my hamshack.

Bob

[Flexradio] Our dear friend and colleague, John Basilotto (W5GI), SK

2011-01-13 Thread Gerald Youngblood
Dear FlexRadio friends and family,

We at FlexRadio lost a dear friend and colleague last night to pancreatic
cancer, John Basilotto (W5GI). I first met John when he showed up on my
doorstep about seven years ago and volunteered to help FlexRadio, then a
fledgling company, build its brand and market. John soon became our VP of
Sales and Marketing and was a major contributor to our company’s success. Over
the subsequent years, John became not only a respected business colleague
but also a friend to all of us here at FlexRadio and many of you. He will
truly be missed.

I had the privilege of spending a few hours with John in mid December. Our
conversation ranged from HAM radio, to family, to friends, to theology, to
his faith. It has been a true inspiration to experience firsthand his
courage and grace while facing terminal cancer.

John left FlexRadio in the summer of 2009 due to declining health, which at
the time was undiagnosed. When he was finally diagnosed a few months later,
his doctors gave him a life expectancy of only three months. That was more
than 15 months ago. John was given the miraculous gift of more time with
his family and friends than could ever be expected by normal medicine.

John left this earth as a man of faith. We are all privileged to have had
the opportunity to know and work with him. Our prayers are with his wife,
Pat and with their children and families; Tammy, Steve, and Chris.

We will let you know about memorial details when we receive them. If you
would like to email the family, you can send to
*jbasilo...@aol.com*
. You can also read postings from the family at

Gerald

[Flexradio] New Software for ShuttlePro/PowerSDR integration [UPDATE]

2011-01-13 Thread Bradley Feldman
I wanted to update all interested in this software development on its
progress...

All the "behind the scenes" coding is complete:

*The software communicates accurately with PowerSDR through the CAT port
(you'll need a virtual COM pair and/or DDutil set up to use)
*Toggle-style CAT Commands work perfectly (i.e., anything in the CAT
dictionary that is switch via an enable/disable instruction -- e.g., MON,
etc.)
*Level-style CAT Commands work perfectly (i.e., anything in the CAT
dictionary whose level can be bumped up or down -- e.g., AF Gain, etc)
*Jog dial speed and acceleration/deceleration work perfectly (for fixed or
variable stepping of the VFO's)
*Shuttle ring/dial works perfectly (for variable stepping of the VFO's
without requiring rotational speed)
*Control press and hold/repeat works perfectly (for auto-repeating of
commands when a control is held down)
*Control "chording" is coded and functionality is possible for future
releases
*Completely separate CAT actions for a control press as opposed to a control
release is coded and functionality is possible for future releases
*Full visual feedback of control operation is complete (for control testing,
control setup and control diagnostic)

With this progress achieved, I'll be moving on to the User Interface of the
application, which will be used to configure/setup the control. It'll
feature presets for assigning most common CAT commands as well as custom CAT
command entry/assignment for those needs that are specific to a particular
radio amateur. I'm trying to focus on an intuitive UI design so that
support issues are minimized if not even existent.

I will be looking to enlist some beta testers -- NOT YET --, but in the near
future. I'll post an appropriate solicitation to the reflector WHEN I am
ready.

*Bradley

John was a wonderful person. His individual help to me taught
me much. He was an incredible source of information and shared
it freely. What a terrific person for me to look up to.

This is truly a very sad day. John was a very close and dear friend of mine
and to a lot of others on this reflector; I will miss him terribly. His
contribution to ham radio and to FlexRadio was immense, but as a person, he was
a giant among us all. One of the good guys. I for one will miss him a lot,
but I am glad he is no longer in pain or suffering any more from his cancer.
Pleases keep his family, especially Pat in your thoughts and prayers during
this sad time.
