Now I am wondering if I had a radio selected when I loaded PSDR Demo last
May. In anticipation of the 5000A, I probably did select at least that
model.

Re: [Flexradio] Differences between the 5K & 6K ?

2012-05-24 Thread Stephen Hicks, N5AC
OK, let's hold on a sec here guys. There's all kinds of concepts and
language that do not match the architecture of the radio being bandied
about. Here are the facts:

1. In the architecture a slice receiver is a complete full functioning
receiver.
2. There are no concepts in the architecture such as "sub receiver" or
"multi watch." These terms are appropriate for receiver systems where the
additional receiver is not an equal partner in the architecture. For
example, if there is a restriction that is be on the same band or within so
many kHz of the original receiver. Again, each slice receiver is a full
receiver and an equal partner with other slice receivers in the
architecture. In SmartSDR, you just create another slice receiver when you
need one.
3. A slice receiver may be used to produce some combination of demodulated
audio stream, a panadapter and an I/Q data stream out of the radio. There
is a limit on how much I/Q data we can send out and you can ingest in your
computer, but the basic capability exists in the radio.
4. We do not have plans to further sub-divide slice receivers. This is
important for several reasons: the main one is that the architecture needs
stability and today's client programmers need to write something that will
be compatible with tomorrow's radio without major changes. The slice
receiver has been defined as the atomic receiver element in the
architecture.
5. Each SCU is a complete set of filters, preamplifier/attenuator and ADC.
Slice receivers are mapped to SCUs and they inherit the capabilities of
that SCU. Demodulation and final filtering (the passband you see in the
display of the panadapter) are done inside the slice receiver and each
slice receiver is totally independent in this regard.
6. An SCU must be connected to one and only one antenna port. So if you
have two SCUs (FLEX-6700) you can place slice receivers on two antennas
7. Slice receivers may be placed on any SCU. This means that you may have
all eight slice receivers on a single SCU (and therefore antenna) if you
desire.
8. We have done basic performance testing on the data side of the house.
We like what we see, but it will be a couple of months before we can state
definitively what data rates in and out of the radio we will be supporting.

Bob,

That statement is only partly true...isn't it??

Its true that in PSDR we have a multiwatch facility but it does not support
independent mode/filters etc.

Will each of the 8/4 slices in the 6700/6500 be capable of supporting
multiwatch/mutireceivers with independent mode/filters etc???

There is no multiwatch functionality in the second receiver at all, although
its been promised for many years, let alone independent mode/filters etc

In the 6700, there are 8 slice receivers but each of those will be capable
of supporting multiple sub RX as in PSDR. We have not decided how many
software receivers to run on the DaVinci per slice and if we did, how you
might use them.

Right now, I want one per slice to be perfect.

Multiple means at least 2, and maybe 4/8. I don't see the hardware
connection points, so maybe we will have audio streaming over the
ethernet

to the PC client. My error.

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several
slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8 "receivers"
available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be disappointing to
assume

that ordinary functions will all be available in an extraordinary radio,
then find they are not.

2012-05-24 Thread Greg
That is very interesting and not mentioned at all in the brochure. It
would be awesome to be able to create a slice for each CW band segment
and output that in some way to skimmer for multiple band decoding
similar to the QS1R. Or maybe Alex would be willing to work on an
interface to connect skimmer server via IP to the 6700/6500 to decode
based on the limits setup by the Skimmer server software. If that
were possible I could sell my QS1R :)

Re: [Flexradio] Getting started 1500 any tips ?

2012-05-24 Thread WM3M

Mark,
I have recently bought a new Flex 1500 and installed it on my Win 7
computer, with the SDR 2.3.5 demo already installed. When I did the
install for the 1500 it did not work. It took me awhile to get it all to
work. What I had to do was completely de-install the demo version of SDR
2.3.5, then I had to manually delete the hidden folder:

c:\Users\username\Appdata\Roaming\FlexRadio Systems
where in the above the username is your user name or the name of your
computer.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, let me know. Good luck.

Subject: [Flexradio] Getting started 1500 any tips ?

Hello

I am expecting delivery of a new Flex 1500. I have seen mention in the
archive posts about conflicts with previous installations of the Power SDR
software in demo mode and switching over to the radio mode at a later date.
I have Power SDR 2.3.5 installed in Demo mode on a Win7 computer. Should I
be concerned about this install when the new radio comes and I hook it up?
Does the old version, and any 'hidden' files need to be deleted and a new
install done, or just the hidden files/directory removed or should it be
good to go as is?

Just trying to make it easy on myself when the new unit arrives.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

It is said we ought not discuss the 6000 series here but I have no plans at
getting one but I find seeing the discussion here useful, anyone agree?

Re: [Flexradio] Differences between the 5K & 6K ?

2012-05-24 Thread Jerry Flanders
OOPS! I just re-read the PDF brochure: "Slice Receivers allow you to
simultaneously visually and audibly monitor multiple frequencies
within the same band or multiple bands ". Looks like we will have
audio to use. Multiple means at least 2, and maybe 4/8. I don't see
the hardware connection points, so maybe we will have audio streaming
over the ethernet to the PC client. My error.

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8
"receivers" available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be
disappointing to assume that ordinary functions will all be
available in an extraordinary radio, then find they are not.

I think the recommendation was to move discussion surrounding the new
products to the [FlexEdge] list as the content more closely fits the
intended use for that list. Please keep the questions coming, but let's do
it on [FlexEdge]. If you aren't subscribed, the process is just like
signing up for this one: simply go to www.flexradio.com and click Support

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8 "receivers"
available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be disappointing to
assume that ordinary functions will all be available in an
extraordinary radio, then find they are not.

Morrice,

I suggest that you contact Eugene Muzychenko [eug...@muzychenko.net], the
software author, to discuss a possible license transfer. Did you mean version
4.11?

This is made possible by the wideband ADC configuration and the increase in
available processing power afforded by embedding the CPU directly in the
radio.

Connect the new radio and power it up per the manual, the run PowerSDR. If
a choice of Demo or Flex appears, pick The Flex radio and you are good to
go.

[Flexradio] Differences between the 5K & 6K ?

2012-05-24 Thread W1JCW
It's fine to discuss the difference between the two platforms as it related to
the 5K.

Thanks for your feedback and not some dumb reply to read this.

I thought by now with all the emails that were in this forum, someone would
have a good break down of what is new and
the differences that would be beneficial to the user.

I have a 5K and wanted to know what significant gains there would be with the
new platform.

I would expect the PC requirements for the 6K platform to be extremely
modest since all of the "radio" processing is done by the ARM processor
in the radio and the PC is simply the client for the GUI much like a Web
browser. I believe Flex has speculated that even a netbook type computer
will suffice. Just about any computer available with a Ethernet port
today should be just fine since it will be primarily just used as a
display interface and for secondary accessory processing.

[Flexradio] Getting started 1500 any tips ?

2012-05-24 Thread MWM
