We want you to know that we are working on including the new frequency allocation in the upcoming PowerSDR 2.6 software release planned for May. Since January, there have been a number of public discussions regarding the legal issues surrounding this topic. Let me summarize briefly the legal requirements that we as an amateur radio manufacturer must follow: This is a matter of UK and EU (R TTE; CE) law. It is not legal for FlexRadio as a manufacturer to ship a radio into the UK that can transmit outside of the ham bands. We as a manufacturer provide the necessary software tool for our distributors to adjust the radios to the needs of their customers because they ship into entire EU. The EU states have different frequency allocations for amateur radio. This is why the CE sign comes with an ! on the radio - which simply means not harmonized. The distributors act regarding the firmware change on their own legal responsibility. The software work necessary for these changes will take some time and will be distributed with the next release of PowerSDR v.2.6.0. We understand the priority of an update of PowerSDR including a match to the new 5 MHz privileges for UK customers. Our target is to present PowerSDR v2.6.0 including a new FireWire driver by May. We will provide for the UK a functional BETA version before the end of our Quality/Test cycle. In addition when we are ready, I would like to accelerate the so called TURF process for your radio by providing the necessary files either by your distributor in UK or by me. If you would like to commence theses changes with your national distributor you may do so. In case you have purchased the radio directly from USA or got it second hand etc. you are welcome to get the files from me. In this case please provide per e-mail your = NoV letter from OfCom = type of radio = serial number of your radio You will receive an instruction how to adjust your unit, the necessary software (TurfClient)and the individual software key(Turf-File). Re: [Flexradio] Video interview with Greg K5JG on SDR technology and the new FLEX-6000
I contend that if they can't hear you with a big three radio, then they don't have the right radio ;-) BTW, an extra 100W or so will not make a big difference in your S meter reading at the other end. You need to go from 100 to 500W to make any appreciable difference. Your money is better spent improving your antenna system. Could this be arcing from brush and commutator of a motor? The start up and shut down pattern are quite unique. Some lines appear to be modulated with arcing. Hi Klaus, I sent you a copy of my NOV Flex3000 serial number information on the 15/01/13 ... Why can't a TURF file be released for the current version of PowerSDR like you have in the past? What is it that has changed so that we have to wait for a complete new version of powerSDR each time?? Is this going to be the case for all future NOV changes?? Mike. Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 94, Issue 19
Mike, Believe me, I appreciate and understand your frustration and we wish it was just that simple to release an updated TURF to our distributors in the UK to provide access to the new band segments, but unfortunately it isn't. If your radio has already been TURFed for the 60m UK band, it will *not* have to be TURFed again for the new 60m band allocations. Software defined radios are governed by software, so a new version of PowerSDR will always berequired for any new radio feature or changein functionality. There is extensive programming logic in both the radio firmware and PowerSDR that has to be changed and tested to enable the new 60m UK band allocations. These changes are not trivial as the transmit logic is foundational to the radio. The new 60m UK band is no longer a channelized band allowing just a single mode (USB) of operation, but is essentially now 11 tiny frequency segments within the 5 MHz band where any mode is allowed as long as you do not exceed the emission bandwidth. So from the perspective of the PowerSDR code, we had to add 11 new all mode bands to the radio, not just one. Will it be this way for all future NoV changes? I can't honestly say because I can not predict what those changes will be and how much effort will be required to facilitatethe changes to the internal firmware and software logic to provide the new functionality. Tim Here's another wrinkle that you may have to consider. There are several overseas (non-UK) allocations that partially overlap the UK allocations, but where UK stations cannot transmit when using 3 kHz wide audio. But if they reduce the audio to 2 kHz wide, they should then be able to transmit. An example: UK has 5378-5382, and Sweden has 5380-5383. If UK nets on Sweden by setting the dial to 5380, UK must not be allowed to transmit with a 3 kHz bandwidth, because part of the signal will be outside the UK allocation. But if UK reduces TX bandwidth to 2 kHz, the signal will now be inside the UK allocation, so should be allowed to transmit. Since the Flex is all controlled by software, I guess it should be straightforward to implement this. The software could even reduce the TX audio bandwidth automatically as you increase the dial frequency towards the upper limit of the segment. Will it be this way for all future NoV changes? Who knows? We in the UK are campaigning for a contiguous 5 MHz band (like many other countries), but that may never happen. -- 73 Ian, G3NRW The UK 60m Band Utilization Chart: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/UK_60m_band_utilization.htm ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] power vs antenna
I've been watching this thread and also the one concerning scratching and have been struck by fact that no one seems to really appreciate the appearance of the back panel of the 5000A and, much worse, no one seems to think of the antenna as anything but some awful burden to be carried by anyone who wants to be a ham radio operator! While I don't think I ever considered the antenna as something to be avoided if at all possible it was only when I studied the Flex panafall that I realized that these creations, typically of wire, rod, stainless steel and aluminum were, in fact, something that deserved appreciation. Really, that little rectangle on your monitor contains a wealth of interesting information. And as I struggled today to overcome some of the last blasts of Wisconsin winter and thought about the half dozen antenna projects currently in planning I realized that these notes on the reflector were by people who were missing one of ham radio's more interesting facets. And all of you who don't have a cable going to every one of those 5000A connectors have my sincerest sympathy! 73 Lee K9WRU - Original Message - From: Michael mat...@charter.net To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: Friday, February 22, 2013 4:06 PM Subject: Re: [Flexradio] power vs antenna ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
