[Flexradio] Help

2008-07-08 Thread Edward J White
Was installing the RX2 and HRFIO unit when I noticed that there is a cut
wire going to the antenna tuner unit. The wire in question is from the
flat 9 wire cable which is hard wired to the AT then it goes to the plug
in plug on the transmitter unit. The wire is #9 (#1 is the red wire) of
the flat cable and it is cut off. Should it be cut? Or did I brake it
off while putting the HRFIO board? Will some one take a look at this on
there unit?

[Flexradio] owners manual

2008-07-04 Thread Edward J White
Hi Gang:
Have a question on the operator's manual
The latest manual listed on the web is Version 1.10.3
The picture of the op system shows 14.200.00 VFO a 14.158.00 VFO B
But I have a copy that I copy from the FLEX site earlier this year that
says its Version 1.10.3 and has a op system with 7.255.00 VFO A and
2.277.500 VFO B
What is going on here?
Is there a Version 1.12.0 Operator's Manual?
I am sure I have missed something somewhere?

[Flexradio] Transverter question

2008-04-11 Thread Edward J White
Hi Gang:
This question is for the people using the FLEX-5000A with transverters.
What are you using to switch the REC and XMT (28 MHz) to each
transverter? I know Mike is using a multi SMA relay one in and several
feed outputs.
What I plan on doing is using separate REC and XMT out of the 5000A to
some coax switches (2) to the input REC and XMT of the transverters.
Where can I locate two switches to do the job?
How are you controlling the switching network?

I need to know as for 902 MHz and above use144 MHz drive the

2. Will the outputs of the 144 MHz and 420MHz from the FLEX-5000 be a

[Flexradio] ATU Iastallation

2007-10-17 Thread Edward J White
Hi Gang:
Have installed the ATU into the FLEX5000A But the instructions sheet says
Select setup and click ATU Installed Where is this block to check?
Shame the input cable to the ATU is not another inch longer than the ATU would
connect directly into the HPA100 BNC Connector instead of using a coax jumper.

[Flexradio] Heil connections to the FLEX-5000A

2007-10-07 Thread Edward J White
Hi Gang:
I have been trying to get a Heil GM-5 Mic and a Heil CC-1 cable to work with
the Flex-5000A front panel MIC connector.
I did locate a problem with the CC-1 cable there is no connection to PIN 5 of
the foster 8 pin MIC connection. Also all the ground connections go to PIN 7
Negative MIC shield and one side of the PTT Foot switch and the PTT on the
GM-5.
If this is the correct way that Heil has wired the CC-1 connection we will have
a problem from others (or maybe they wired my cable wrong).
Also the GM-5 has the negative MIC and shield wire connected together inside so
that the connector also connects the grounds to the case of the MIC

The Heil GM-5 is wired as the following using a 4 pin connector.
Pin 1 - MIC and MIC case ground.
Pin 2 + Mic (to capacitor to switch wide narrow)
Pin 3 PTT one side of switch
Pin 4 PTT other side of switch

I found the following with the CC-1 Heil connector Foster 8 pin MIC with foot
switch connector wired as follows.
Pin 8 + from MIC
Pin 7 Negative Mic, Shield, one side of PTT foot switch, one side of PTT GM-5
on the MIC
Pin 6 one side of PTT foot switch and one side of PTT on GM-5 on the MIC.
Pin 5 NO Connection
Pin 4 to 1 No connection.

Anybody else have this problem when using the front panel MIC Connection.

I also have noted that when you short Pins 5 and 6 on the front panel the
FLEX-5000A does not key up??

Have sent Eric W. a email about this.

any help will be great

You mean you didn't get the secret password and hidden instructions for case
removal? Must have been an oversight.

Use your finger nail to pry off the sides ( look for the cutouts). Remove
the 4 torque screws on each side. Two on the top and two on the bottom. Pry
off the top and bottom covers-gently by pulling the sides of the covers
outward. You will need a T-20 torque bit.

  Good luck.

[Flexradio] Linux question

2007-08-15 Thread Edward J White
Hi Gang:
Once again I have to reach into the vast knowledge of the group for info.
I have built up a new computer for the FLEX-5000 with TWO HD one for XP the
other for Ubuntu Linux. My plan is to have the computer ask what drive to go to
XP or Ubuntu. (Question how do I set that up?) I also want to run duel monitors.
Formatting the new HD for XP no problem but what about formatting the other HD
for Ubuntu?
I plan to put Ubuntu on latter ( when I figure what I have to do to get it
working) .
All this is so I can run some of the WSJT on EME latter this year after I have
time to see Joe's K1JT and his super WSJT set up.
I am assuming that we are going to use XP for a long time and not the Vista.
Any help will be great and thank you for supporting the SDR craze.

  Computer Experts Help:
I am having this problem with my Flex that I am now convinced is coming
from my computer. With a suggestion from Ken I checked my task manager
with the idea of changing the affinity level but immediately seen that
the item highlighted was pulsing. The rate seems to be exactly that
which appears on the carrier of my SDR. Anyone know what is causing
this and can it be disabled???

I am slowly but surely removing all vestiges of comcast email from my
life. I have just about had it up to my neck with their constantly
falling prey to the stupid denial of service to its users by people
sending in fake reports to their automated robots. It is then extremely
difficult to get them to change their stance. It is not possible for
the end user to get it worked on at all. The "offending server" must
handle it and yet, when they attempt to, they are regularly told
everything is or will be alright only to find out that it is not.

I have not received a flex radio mail message in 10 days. Because of
work and holidays, it did not come to my attention until Sunday.
PLEASE modify your address books for me to reflect my change to use of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as my primary home address for these mailing
  lists/groups.

Re: [Flexradio] Microsoft XP

Hi Gang:
Well after reading about this Microsoft wga I used the web info Richard sent me
and removed it. I also have turned off windows updates. Now I hope that
ZoneAlarm protects me.
The suggestion from most of the groups advise me to head for Linux. Yes I think
I will start on that path. I guess I should head for the Linux that the
SDR-1000 is going to use as that is where I plan on going into the future of
communications. Better learn now or get lost in the dust. I guess as I look
back learning CW for my license was a lot easier than this computer stuff that
you have to keep on learning.
Now to see what Linux the Flex group is using. Next check with the local Tech
Collage and see if they have a course
People thank you for the great help, I know Hams always help others

I often wonder if Microsoft is collecting info from our computers and is now

Navy manuals are updated in this manner, or use to. It's called a List of

Page Change

I think we should have a page that shows which page has been changed. Some
of us use the manual to read about the operations and changes to the
system.

This could be done by listing each page that is changed on a CHANGE PAGES
sheet. this way it would allow all of us to see what has changed each time
the manual is updated. Use the current manual as the original and all
pages

there after will show on the CHANGE PAGE.

Hi Bob, Eric and Gerald,

I am writing an article about the nature of SDR-1000 and the
philosophy behind FlexRadioSystems i.e. to offer the software to
everyone, the contributions the users provide in describing what they
want or even augmenting the coding and so on.

A good example is the AGC. I will refer to Phil's concept (which has a
significant educational value) and describe the implementation in
PowerSDR. For this step I ask for your help. I don't want to show
lines of codes (maybe I am wrong and you suggest to show a few
decisive lines ?) but I want to describe where the processing takes
place. I want to draw a picture showing the structure of the software
- the "digital signal chain" from the mic to the soundsystem output.

Can you please provide some information to make this happen? Thanks a
lot.

Have a nice weekend and a successful townhall meeting!

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-1000, "Second Order" tests, and 80 db and other.....

2005-09-18 Thread Edward J White

Hi Gang:
Well after reading all the e-mails posted here about SDR- Gerald
answered my question well. I am waiting to get the parts for ECO-020 and
025 I will also install when I remove the radio to install the PA /
antenna tuner.ECO-001,002,0011, 012, 018. This should then bring my SDR-1000
up to the top line radio that it is and will be for some years to come. I
can invision other external programs / hardware to the SDR-1000 so this
great radio will work just about every mode known to radio communications
for a long time.

Ed,

We just upgraded the radio in July to give it top performance 3rd order
dynamic range of any radio on the market. We also made the modifications
available to every customer since day one. We really should be calling
the

current radio something like the SDR-1500 because it has been through
several upgrades that have been available to all customers.

Most of the additional improvements to the SDR-1000 will come through
software enhancements. We have a built in impulse generator that will
soon

let us use software to perfect image rejection and produce exceptional
impulse noise subtraction. That will be a download. This is a SOFTWARE
radio.

73,
Gerald

We have to hope that Gerald produces a new
version of the SDR with all we have learned
Does this mean that the SDR-1000 we now know will stop being and another
SD- will be comming ? Or do you mean that we will be upgrading the
hardware to make a better system?

As I have said before, the other developers and I owe the user/owners
of the SDR-1000 a great debt of gratitude for being our guinea pigs and
laboratory. The past many months have produced a remarkable machine and
increasingly good software. The software is about to take a departure
as we bring really modern (FREE) software development tools to bear on
the next generation of code. We have to hope that Gerald produces a new
version of the SDR with all we have learned and as such, we have to
design with more modularity and ease of facilitating MANY to contribute
so this can continue well into the future.

Re: [Flexradio] Operating Manual

2005-07-24 Thread Edward J White

Hi Gang:
I think that there should be two manuals one that is the current full manual
and the other that contains the changes on the web. This way lets say you
have version 0.6 and version 0.8 is the current version on the web then all
you will have to down load will be changes 0.7 and 0.8 toss old the pages
away and you will have the current manual. As for the pages changing just
add a page list to the end that tells you page xx was deleted and page 16
was extended into 16A (new page). This is the way the military flight
manuals are. Simple does a good job and once every two years they do a full
manual change.

I think this will help out a lot with the down load and copy of the manual.
What do you think Eric and Gerald?

Klaus

I think we probably would all like chapter relative updated manuals. Saves
a

lot of work for Eric1 also. There needs to be a way of handling the manual
as a 'program' like they do the software updates.

Hi Gerald and others,

I know that writing documentation is a tremendous amount of work. Thanks
for
the manual so much. Like many others I love to read and work with manuals
as

printouts. I can't get used to read and work on the screen. Like the
software the manual is a living document. Maybe my suggestion is not new
(if

so I apologize for that) but I would be glad if the manual will be updated
in future by publishing changes only i.e. by deleting, changing and adding
new pages or even making pen and ink changes only - whatever is
appropriate.

I know that this will need a new page count (counting chapters and related
pages) but it will be worth the saving of ink and paper.

Again thanks for your efforts and good luck!

Klaus, DK7XL
