[Flexradio] Leads
I¹m finding this thread really hard to comprehend, we are all radio hams and have gone through various Courses around the world, I would never ever consider buying a lead for any headset either Radiosport, Heil or Computer Headset I have sucessfully made all headsets work with every radio I have used both Flex or YaKeIc. I sort of guessed this was going to provoke a response, either way I fall into the category of disabled and in a wheelchair With poor manual dexterity and when I attempt a task it does take me a hell of a lot longer than it used too but the way I see it while I can I dam well will and find it very hard to swallow when I hear a load of excuses why they don’t do it, the way I see it is I can create what I want not what dealers think I want. Re: [Flexradio] Smart SDR s/w?
I have been a flex follower for a good number of years and yes I do like the look of the the 6XXX series of radios but I do have to start to think twice about paying for software updates, if I keep the radio 5 years and have to pay 200 dollars a year (assuming I want the updates) that¹s another 1K so a 2.5K radio becomes 3.5K equivalent to a approx 40% price increase I don¹t think so ! I got sick of Microsoft for this so I jumped ship to Apple expensive but I was prepared to pay this premium for the privilidge of free updates plus something that gives me very little trouble and have to do very little management. I have a feeling that I maybe looking else where when the time comes for an upgrade, the market is about to be flooded with direct sampling SDR¹s. I have not seen any other Amateur companies take this path (yet) but I know of two other people that have already jumped ship from flex for this reason. My two cents worth apologies for starting or carrying on this thread. Re: [Flexradio] Flex radios are the worst polluters ??
I don’t usually want to get involved in this type of argument but I have to say for the few contacts that are made on the microwave bands in comparison to what are usually made on HF I really don’t see this as an issue also by the fact that you are using dishes with very small beam widths again it’s a non issue. You also ran the flex 1500 with no problem until you read the article it was only then that it came relevant. If it is, buy a Flex 6000. SM5BSZ has in his article proposed a solution to minimize the problem, but this seems not to have any interest at Flexradio. Im an active microwaver. Until I got this message I used 2 Flex 1500 with transverters and PAs to 1,3 47 GHz. On some bands I use maximum legal power and dish antennas. Under good propagation conditions I can raise the noise floor at UK stations 600 km away across the North Sea. That is not OK even if the radio meets US standard. Thats too bad. This arrogant attitude to the problem has forced me and other microwavers to go for radios not suffering from this problem, f. ex KX3 or ANAN. My 2 Flex 1500 are now collecting dust on the shelf. [Flexradio] The SDR Buzz
I remember getting my SDR 1000 a few years ago and nearly every day I got updates to try and enjoyed it very much it was a real buzz, then that all stopped. I got my F5K and started to use it as a radio and enjoy and still enjoy it very much but not quite with the same buzz I had back in the early days of the SDR1000. I recently acquired a (flame proof underwear now on) a TS590 to replace my TS2000 and have been using this for CW keeping the F5K for SSB and AM, in reality I can work all the stuff on my TS590 as I can on the F5K and vice versa, but being a real CW novice the use of physical knobs and not being distracted by what is going on on the screen is rather useful for my concentration at the moment J Would I love a new radio yes course I would but would it in reality give me the same buzz as in the past probably not, would I be able to work anymore stations probably not. I think this can be levelled at most technology things nowadays whether its TV's, smartphones, computers etc etc perhaps I'm just getting old. Ian G0CTO -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of J D Lambright Sent: 11 October 2010 03:54 To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Cc: jdlambri...@the-law-offices.com; isellbo...@aol.com Subject: [Flexradio] RF Problems with a Flex 5000 A friend (KC5PD) and I (KF5U) each purchased a Flex 5000A on the same order. The radios were identical from the factory, shipped at the same time, and they both included the ATU and the 2nd receiver. We are both running PSDR v1.18.6. From the beginning, KC5PD has been having a serious RFI problem with his rig, while I have not had even a single RFI problem with mine. He is using a Heil mic connected thru the front of the F5000, while I am using a Heil PR-781 mic connected to the balanced input on the back of my Flex. As an experiment, KC5PD brought his F5000 to my shack today so we could run some tests. First, we connected his mic through the front input on my rig. He had SSB QSO's on 17m and 20m with several hams with no RFI problems whatsoever. Then we simply disconnected my F5000 and connected his F5000 in its place. Nothing was moved. Except for replacing my F5000 with his, everything else remained identical - same antennas (cubical quad), same power supply, same computer, same firewire cable, same speaker cable, etc. Same everything. He even sat in my chair!! In trying to talk with the hams we did previously, KC5PD immediately had very serious RFI problems, where we had no RFI problems minutes earlier using my F5000 with the same mic connected to the front. We then connected my mic to the balanced I/P on KC5PD's F5000, and the RFI problems disappeared. In summary, with both rigs at my QTH: 1. I have no RFI problems on my rig whether I use the balanced I/P with my mic or the front mic connector with KC5PD's mic. 2. With KC5PD's F5000 at my shack, he has serious RFI problems with the mic connected through the front I/P. 3. With KC5PD's F5000 at my shack, he has no RFI problems with the mic connected via the balanced I/P. Thus, there is some sort of significant RFI problem with KC5PD's F5000 when he uses the front mic input. In an identical configuration using his mic and his mic cable, I have no such problem. (His mic cable has been properly grounded per Dudley's and Heil's recommendation.) As an interesting side note, the serial # on his rig bears absolutely no relation whatsoever to the serial # on my rig, even though they were on the same order and were shipped together. I don't know what this means, but it seems odd. Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated, as KC5PD has about exhausted his Flexibility in trying to get a resolution to this problem.
