Re: [Flexradio] F3K acting up
Hi Dave, I am not sure what to tell you. I had this issue twice. The first time was when the loop antenna had one lead disconnect from the balun. Once the antenna was fixed it went back to normal. The Second was after my cat decided to play around behind the desk. I found that RF got into the Firewire cable after she had relocated the Firewire cable on top of the RG-213 to wall antenna port cable. Even with the toroids on the Firewire, 10 watts was not liked by the Firewire System. I took power off the F3K and the PC, then powered all back on, symptom continued. When I ATU or Tune, the SWR sweeps down the full range of the meter, then starts back again at the high end. Re: [Flexradio] post-I Internal tuner of Flex-3000
Hi Matthew, I use several different loops with my Flex-Radio 3000. First is a 160 Meter - 558 Foot horizontal loop, feed with 450 ohm ladder line and 4:1 Balun 6 foot into the shack. It tunes 160 through 6 meters with the Flex-3000 tuner. Second is a 80 Meter - 287 Foot vertical Delta loop feed at the top apex with 4:1 Balun to 100ft coax run. It tunes 80 through 6 meters with the Flex-3000 tuner. Third is a Cubex Quad - two elements on 40 30 Meters and 4 Elements on 20,17,15,12,10. All of these are tuned and I bypass the internal Flex-3000 tuner. Last is a Cubex 6/2 Quad. It is tuned for 6 meters. I bypass the Flex-3000 internal antenna tuner. One note that I read in the ARRL antenna hand book was to make loops for multiband use a little long (for the lower edges of the band). The formula I used was Length in feet = 1005/Frequency in MHz. They are all cut to the bottom edge of the band. The Quads are set for the middle on the bands, as each is tuned for that band only and not for multi band use. Re: [Flexradio] Imagine digital starting at the antenna connector...
Yes Brian, But if I am going to have that then I WANT it all. Direct D:A at 1500 watts to the antenna with go spectral purity and ability to transmit on multiple frequencies at the same time. Since the receiver lets me hear and decode multiple frequencies at the same time, why not have multiple transmit :-) Of course this does mean new software that couples directly to the operator, so thoughts can be used to handle the multiple streams at once. The ears, eyes, voice, and fingers, are just too slow as interfaces to handle that much information simultaneously. But then I said I WANT it all ;-) Jim Fuller N7VR -- http://www.n7vr.org International TCP/IP Gateways Robot Operator -- http://www.ampr-gateways.org MTAPRS NET Server Operator -- http://www.mtaprs.net CWOP-2 -- http://www.wxqa.com IRLP Node 3398 - http://irlp.fuller.net Original ARECC contributor -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Brian Lloyd Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 8:46 AM To: Drax Felton Cc: FlexRadio List Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Imagine digital starting at the antenna connector... Drax, you need to understand how a direct sampling receiver works. In essence, it uses an analog-to-digital converter connected directly to the antenna. (In reality there is buffering, matching, and filtering to keep unwanted signals out of the A:D but the basic concept is the same.) The other part of the secret is called decimation, which allows you to trade bandwidth for dynamic range. So the receiver can go from being a wide-band, see-everything-from-1.8MHz-to-54MHz, radio, to a narrow-band radio with world-class dynamic-range and IP3 numbers at the flip of a software switch. (BTW, it does still need a good front-end filter.) Re: [Flexradio] Wide Screen Monitors
Hi Joe, There have been some studies about running a monitor at 60 Hz under florescent lights. The flicker of the florescent lights is not synced with the 60Hz in the monitor. This has been known to cause stress on the eyes and brain. An often used suggestion is to change the refresh rate on the monitor to another refresh rate. This usually relieves the issues. A popular rate for most of the widescreens is 59 Hz, as this has been reported to relieve the issue, also. This is typically a United States issue as we run a 60Hz power grid. The rate is a function of the display adapter and the Monitor matchup. I would check out your computer monitor card and see what it will support on sizes and refresh rates. The order the monitor you wish appropriately. You may find you are limited in the refresh rates the widescreen monitors can handle. Re: [Flexradio] Initializing Port Audio - thanks to Flex Radio!
Hi Mike, One other note. If you are using Remote Desktop to connect with, be sure to set your sound to play on the remote computer. If it is not then PowerSDR attempts to connect your local computer rather than the FlexDriver. All Just a note for those who trip over this on PSDR. My 3000 was running fine, then one day, it stopped at Initializing Port Audio - 4 seconds. (Uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling didn't help - We did that, oh, about 10 times). You don't even get to the point where it asks you to run in demo mode. I've been busy for the last month, so I wasn't too worried about it when it started to happen about a month ago. Now, I know I had this before, but I thought I got it to go away with a database reset. Here is how it breaks down: At that point, it seems that PSDR is trying to connect to the sound device. So, make sure the Flex Audio drivers are not your default device. (That wasn't the problem with me). However, I noticed that I could not get into the Sound Devices control panel at all (this was the clue). Reboot. Nope, still can't bring up the Sound Control panel. Digging into Device Manager, and looking at the audio devices, there was 1 audio device that I didn't really need. (I even killed Skype as we thought that that could have contributed nope). Long story short. The Audio device on the web cam was locking up PSDR during startup. When I unplugged the Web Cam and rebooted, the problem went away and PSDR started right up. So, again, Many thanks to the Flex Team - Dudley who was front and center. It is great to see a company like this were they all share the same passion for their product. Mike VA3MW p.s. [Flexradio] Flex Service!
Hi All, On 3/24/2010 I posted a notice about what I thought might be an issue regarding Low output power. Tim recommended I contact support and copied Dudley of Flex-radio support. Before I had a chance to email support, Dudley replied that the procedure I used in determining there was an issue was correct. He recommended running a diagnostic process to help verify and determine the issue. Following the instructions in Dudley's E-Mail, we determined that Q4 was not operating within specifications. Dudley had an RMA setup for return. At this point I am impressed, as most companies would have had you send it in without any proof of a problem nor any idea of what was happening. Flex-Radio had both of these bases covered. I get the RMA and attached form to fill out. I like they what to know who the radio belongs to. It gave me an understanding that they intended to protect my investment. I returned the radio assuming that they would get to it similar to the dealings I have had in the past with Kenwood and Yaesu. With Kenwood and Yaesu, I send it in it gets in queue and 4 to 6 weeks later I am contacted about the issue, repair, and return. Well, I am sorry to report my preconceived understanding were incorrect. Instead, I received a notification it had been received. Then came an invoice on Monday 04/05/2010 that indicated it have been repair under warranty and was headed back to me. I received a call last night from UPS indicating that it would be delivered today and needed a signature. (Another indication Flex-Radio takes my investment seriously.) Today, 04/08/2010 I have received it. I have checked it out and it works great. What I learned from this is that Flex-Radio considers the customer as important. They make sure to understand the issue. They protect the equipment. They place recourses to efficiently repair and return the unit. They care enough to make sure it is not lost in shipping and signed for. I was first licensed in 1964. I have had to return a few units for repair, some under warranty and some not. This is the best service I have seen. Flex-radio cares enough to support their product. Tim, Dudley and the rest of the Flex staff Thank You! [Flexradio] Low Output
Hi All, I have the following: Flex-3000 FlexDriver: 3.5.0.7171 Firmware: 1.2.5.6 PowerSDR: 1.18.5 Operating System: Win 7 64 Bit. Last night the FlexDriver dropped. I shut down PowerSDR. I then powered off the Flex-3000. When returning to air. The FWD PWR indicated about 10 to 15 Watts on SSB With the Drive setting at 100. I switched to the dummy load and had the same problem. I reset the database and the same result. Frequency is 7.268.5KHz. Mic Gain Verified at 15 CODR at 5. Mic is a Yaesu MH-31. Tested all Bands Same Results. I decided to use tune to see the results, as previously I have been able to tune into the dummy load at 100 watts. Max power indicated out was 19 Watts. Cross checked with a external Watt Meter verifies output readings. As I still had PowerSDR 1.18.3 on the computer, I tried it with the same results. Database reset did not make any difference. I think there may be an issue. Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting
I have been looking at this from a bit different point of view. As Neal mentioned Flex 3000's, I will share the thinking. I am considering two Flex 3000s each run by a computer on a network. I can use a KVM switch to handle the keyboard, mouse and maybe mic (using Video Ports) switching. Each computer/Flex 3000 system would run it's own version of N1MM and use the database interlinking to share the contacts, in the same as a multi transmitter station setup. Because each Radio would have it's own screen, amp, antenna, I could work separate bands for multiplier gathering. However, I also think the Flex 5000 with and RX2 would work easier. Just have not looked everything over far enough. The thing that would allow this to work is that N1MM can synchronize data between multiple computers. We would need to fandangle PowerSDR, build on the 5000 implementation logic so it could run dual panadapters from two 3000s instead of 1 dual-rx 5000. So coax 1 can have any band from 160 to 10 m and so does coax 2. I simply want RX1 to TX on ANT1 on all bands and RX2 to TX on ANT2 on all bands. Re: [Flexradio] USB to Serial Converter Question
Hi Carl and all, rant We are an HP Partner. We have been notified that any 32 Bit machines will be Special Order and have an added cost. It appears the industry has decided to move on to the 64 Bit platform. The nice thing is they will build and test the machine with windows 7 so most hardware problems are resolved. Business Class machines sold by Partners are normally ready for daily operations. I wish the industry was just a bit more open about these major moves. The software vendors are left behind and last to respond. Even though Windows 7 allows operation by a 32Bit program, there are always a few issues with expected items that are not cross supported. The add on devices are also a problem. One customer has a 3.5 Floppy/USB drive he has been using for the last year. We put in a new machine and bingo the drive does not work. BTW, he did not mention to anyone he was using it during the upgrade survey. It did not occur to him that it would not just plug in a work. Several other customers have reported issues with the Serial/USB dongles. This appear to be another area that is slowly resolving itself. /rant At least one thing I am finding, the Flex Radio stuff appears to work and be solid. Chalk one up for the boys at Flex. Re: [Flexradio] What external antenna tuners are folks using with Flex radio?
Hi Mark, I use several tuners. I have a Flex-3000. At the home QTH I use a Nye/Viking for the 160/80 loop. I use the internal tuner to touch up the band edges of the Quad for 40/30. Mobile I have a screw driver antenna with matching network. So normally, no tuner needed. Now the fun part is the portable operation. I have an MP-1 that works, but normally I find I can put up a wire antenna. I use a homebrew PI network matcher that is same and limited to about 100 watts. I, also, use a LDG Z-ll tuner, as it will do a 15 to 1 match. The Z-11 is limited to 50 Watts. This keeps the RF feed back down, along with the use a portable 4:1 Balun. Operating in many locations, as I travel, I am always challenged with new antenna installations and designs. It is my hope that in the future, the Flex-3000 could be outfitted with a 10:1 tuner.
