Flex is paying attention to their customer base. many Flexers are early
adopters of technology, many are always looking for the next new shinny
ball. Hence the number of Flexers selling 5Ks to buy into the new shinny
ball of the 6K series.

A Flex radio costs a few K$ and technological obsolescence is only
partially offset by software enhancements incrementally delivered
following the Microsoft business model (6K series.) Eventually we can
weep, wail, and gnash our teeth over the new shinny ball that replaces the
6K series if we and Flex are lucky.

Say you bought a Chevy, maybe a Corvette. Do you expect for years and
years afterword that GM will be retrofitting it with the latest and
greatest updates of automotive technology (for free for the 5K) or for a
few $ annually in the Microsoft business model approach of the 6K series.

I think Flex offered a fantastic opportunity with the 5K to keep a "NEW"
radio as long as they did via software upgrades before moving on up to the
6K technology. The Model T Ford was a fantastic bargain and very
versatile but eventually was surpassed technologically and not retrofitted
ad infinitum with new tech.

What manufacturer of ham radios has done more lately for the ham community
than flex? Lets dry our eyes and get on with our lives. I will be keeping
my 5K thank you. It is not obsolete compared to the rice burners.
Someday I will buy another new shinny ball, maybe a Flex 6K or 7K or a
brand/model not invented yet.

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 110, Issue 13

2014-06-14 Thread Jordan Arndt

Just to add this note:

All 723 devices contain zener diodes that can and will produce low level
noise RF 'hash' which can be eliminated by adding bypass caps at the
appropriate pins of the 723 device.
Just be sure to check the case type of the device vis-a-vis 8 pin IC or
round metal case types as the pin-out is different for each type.

I have seen cases where an improvement of 6dB-10dB to the noise floor on 2m
results from supplies without OEM bypassing of the devices, such as some
Astrons and other older generic 3055 type supplies.

Like Ed says - the supply/components, once you have them, are quite
valuable.

Three key elements make this a not-bad supply to start with, any
version/rating, and highly recoverable from any of a few common failures:

- Long-standing 723 regulator - a highly flexible, reliable, FAST, can-be
precision regulator. Yes, there are other newer components with a variety of
qualities but you "can do just about anything" with a 723 - I've been
building 723-based supplies since the mid-70s. Anyone can build a solid
regulated supply from the many app notes for this device.

- Along with the 723, aside from the custom transformer, off-the-shelf
components - no fancy switching regulators, caps, inductors, tricks. If you
can't find a handful of 2n3055 and some big caps you're not looking hard
enough.

- custom transformer - brute force tailored for 18-22 v AC source for the
regulated section, a separate winding for the regulator source voltage, and
there is a LOT of iron between the mains and secondary

I challenge all but the craftiest folks to deal with and repair switchers.
I'm good with electronics but I prefer simple and obvious to custom highly
compact designs.

A few simple problems/issues I've have with the Astrons - all of which can
be solved with after-market parts and 30-60 minutes on the bench:

1. Main supply caps - common issue with any supply - replace or add too them
2. regulator supply cap - I usually rip this thing out and replace with 4700
ufd to beef up the raw DC to the reg chip itself, adds stability
3. on-board driver transistor failure - usually open - easy replacement with
any mid-power NPN

4. MOV shorts - a 99 cent part is not the best surge protection anyway
5. crow-bar vs. fold-back limiting - this is debatable - hopefully you fuse
your loads properly and this never kicks in. Either method is appropriate
depending on whether you're using the supply in a monitored/home environment
or 50 miles away at a repeater site and can't reset it.

I would not use this supply in the BB battery backup mode or to float
batteries. If you need to do this get a good 3-4-stage charger and battery
isolator.

Additionally, I learned not quite the hard way that my rigs and mobile amp
should not share the same supply. I found I was starving my Flex running my
ALS-500M on the same supply. A separate 50A Astron runs the amp and the rigs
run off another supply and battery backup.

The problems with Astron linear power supplies have been known for
years. However, they can be modified inexpensively to be a good unit.
Info is still available at http://www.w5bwcelectronics.com
.The needed board can be had from
http://farcircuits.net . A description of my
modifications is on http://madisondxclub.org under INTERESTS -> PROJECTS.

I thought those power supplies were far too valuable to junk out.

Way back in the OLD days, before World War II, an ECO was an electron

Everybody was putting in ECOs so that they weren't stuck on a few

Re: [Flexradio] TXOut Delay.

2013-09-02 Thread Jordan Arndt
Page 9 of the Flex5k manual discusses the keying line limitations and shows
an intermediate ckt to be used called the "Protective PTT circuit between
TX1-3 and Amplifier". The relay you use "external" to the Flex should
handle whatever voltage/current parameters are required by your rig. If you
have a -125Vdc line to be keyed, use a relay with contacts rated for that

If you don't care about arcing the relay contacts or generating a burst of
nasty, broad signal when you key up,

then of course you'd be right.

If your transceiver could handle the switch voltage/current/inductive
spike of the amplifier relay key line,
you'd be right again. In your case, though, since the SB-200 uses a 120V
relay coil, I somehow doubt the F3K's
switching transistor would tolerate that for long without the isolation
box. Perhaps someone from Flex knows the actual spec.

Not sure how "overly cautious" applies here?

50ms is probably around the minimum for an SB-200.

It all depends on the relay(s). In the case of the SB-200 it's an old
open-frame type, very slow. Amps advertised for "QSK" use often have
vacuum relays, which can switch many times faster.

If you're running SSB, keep in mind that hotswitching the antenna
contacts is the major issue, but not the only one. Some amp designs (not
the SB-200) have a separate relay for the tube bias, which is often
buffered with a simple R/C network. The point is that you shouldn't put
drive on the tube(s) before the operating bias has had time to switch
from cut-off to operate. In the case of the SB-220 for example, the
cutoff bias is set to a unnecessarily high voltage as a matter of
convenience, which makes the situation worse.

I have mine set at 50ms. That's a pretty reasonable time for power and
antenna relays to pull in and get seated.

I originally started at 100ms, but the delay was noticable-- not long,
but you could kinda tell it was there. I can't tell 50ms at all, except
a little on CW. I start getting faults in my amp with less than 20-25ms
of transmit delay on 80 and 40 meters. 20 meters I could set it at 0ms
and it never faults. Go figure.

Maybe I'm missing something but when I click on the buy link for any of

That is what has me worried about buying into old technology.

When out of Joy, try Dawn. ;)

Seriously, there has to be a new source of that noise in or near your
house/station. I have seen trickle chargers, battery tenders, wall warts,
etc. that caused horrendous noise. I personally found a wall wart on the
old router that went bad (it was >6 years old) and drove me nuts with
noise. Of course, it was the last thing I checked.

Outside the building, there could be a bad power line or transformer.

Best of luck finding the source; please let us know how it goes.

[Flexradio] Flex5000A Calibration routine question

S/R= 96000khz

Is there a new list of settings, or a new procedure to run the BITE routines,

I am wondering if there has been a change to the settings used for running

Is it still 96khz at 1024k buffer, with Factory Default ROM info..?

Since my last calibration using that format, I have bad image spikes even

there are enough left to be problematic to some extent.

I have not seen this before so if I can eliminate that variable, I'll have

Please folks, the Heros VLF converter is vastly more sophisticated than
the

lower priced units with limited filtering from Palomar (which I own) or
Jackson Harbor or the others. The Heros is very fairly priced.

Still, most of us will NOT benefit from the Heros unless we're in an area
of

very high RF density. My $89 Palomar works great with my 5000.

Here are details on the impressive Heros VLF converter:
http://herostechnology.co.uk/pdf/VLF_LF_Converter_brochure_web.pdf

Regarding the Heros preselector: that's another waste for almost all U.S.
hams. But maybe a nice addition if you live in rf-noisy downtown London.

v2.3.5 Release Notes and you use the following KB article as a guide
(http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50357.aspx) it works just
fine.

One thing to remember about Direct IQ, the sampling rate of the VAC cables
is not determined by the VAC Sampling Rate drop down box in Setup - it is
totally dependent on the sampling rate of the radio and if you thing about
it it makes sense. You are getting direct IQ data from the QSD and that
is entirely dependent on the radio's "audio" sampling rate.

So if your radio's is set to 96kHz then the subsequent CWSkimmer
configuration needs to be set for 96 kHz also (as shown in the KB
article).

I am currently running two instances of CWSkimmer on 20 and 40m @ 192 kHz
with the FLEX-5000 + RX2 running PowerSDR v2.4.4

CAUTION: You do NOT want to use the "flexradio audio" audio device
instead of running with a VAC cable (audio device). There was a very good
reason it was removed from PowerSDR v2.4.4 and that is by using this audio
device as the audio input into PowerSDR you can easily blow the PA in your
radio because you are feeding complex audio directly into the QSE
bypassing the DSP which provides the ALC for gain limiting into PA.

I could never get it to work. Between the problem with CW Skimmer and
the
problem with DXLabs Winwarbler mentioned by Rich, W3ZJ, (below) I
reverted

back to Ver. 2.3.5.
---
I did have a little trouble with DXLab's WinWarbler because it doesn't
like

WDM. But since I feed the power speaker output from the Flex-3000 to the
line input on my computer sound card I was able to configure WinWarbler
to
get its audio from the computer sound card instead of the VAC and that
seems
to be working OK. I think what we are seeing here is some set up
problems
because the Beta testers didn't have duplicates of all our various set
ups

but so far it has all been solvable.

I am not able to get CW Skimmer v 1.71 to decode properly with PowerSDR
v2.4.4 and a Flex-3000.

The radio CAT commands seem to be working correctly using PowerSDR v2.4.4
and DXLabs Commander. CW Skimmer is setup as a secondary CAT control in
Commander using Kenwood CAT protocol. The correct frequency is indicated
in

both Commander and CW Skimmer.

There is noise indicated in the CW-Skimmer waterfall, however, there is no
CW decoding indicated. The Audio setup in CW Skimmer is:

SoundCard Driver: WDM
Signal I/O Device: 04 Virtual Cable 2
Audio I/O Device: 03 Virtual Cable 1
Channels: Left/Right: I/Q
Shift Right Channel Data: 0 Samples

The Radio setup in CW Skimmer is:

Hardware Type: SoftRock IF
CW Pitch: 750 Hz
Audio IF: 9750 Hz
Sample Rate: 96 kHz

The PowerSDR v2.4.4 VAC setup is:

Primary:
 Buffer Size: 1024
 Sample Rate: 96000

VAC1:
 Enable VAC1... Checked
 Driver: Windows WDM-KS
 Input: Virtual Cable 1
 Output: Virtual Cable 2
 Buffer Size: 1024
 Sample Rate: 96000 Hz
 Mono/Stereo: unchecked
 Direct I/Q: checked
 Calibrate I/Q: checked
 Buffer Latency: 120
 Allow PTT to override... checked

Any ideas?

Yes, there are things that don't work and funny stuff happens sometimes
but I really like that radio and the bumpy stuff on the back and it rarely
surprises me anymore. With a few mouse clicks and, yes, maybe even a
reboot it does what I've come to expect and I definitely consider it to be
an aspect of my radio hobby that keeps me interested.

The failures and shortcomings are most likely the result of the incredible
complexity and unpredictable interactions in software and hardware that
are unlikely to be ever totally "fixed."

Wait until you hear the weeping and wailing and howls of dissatisfaction
when the first 6000's appear!

Thanks for all the replies. I followed a suggestion by Bill, W9OL, and set
the CWS Signal I/O device to "Flexradio Audio", which I understand to be
the direct I/Q data from the Firewire driver. This is working perfectly,
and I like that I do not have to change PowerSDR settings to use VAC for a
digimode program like DM780. If there are drawbacks to this approach, I
would appreciate feedback.

Tim, at your suggestion, I tried setting the Win7 Audio device to
2-channel, which I did before starting the radio or any programs, but it
does not work. I must be missing some other setting on VAC, but I think I
will give up for now.

Thanks again to all who replied, both on and off list.
