Hello Paul,

we are pleased that UK ham radio operators are now authorized to use the new
60m band. We want you to know that we are working on including the new
frequency allocation in the upcoming PowerSDR 2.6 software release planned for
May. Since January, there have been a number of public discussions regarding
the legal issues surrounding this topic. Let me summarize briefly the legal
requirements that we as an amateur radio manufacturer must follow:

This is a matter of UK and EU (R & TTE; CE) law. It is not legal for FlexRadio
as a manufacturer to ship a radio into the UK that can transmit outside of the
ham bands. We as a manufacturer provide the necessary software tool for our
distributors to adjust the radios to the needs of their customers because they
ship into entire EU. The EU states have different frequency allocations for
amateur radio. This is why the CE sign comes with an "!" on the radio - which
simply means "not harmonized". The distributors act regarding the firmware
change on their own legal responsibility.
The software work necessary for these changes will take some time and will be
distributed with the next release of PowerSDR v.2.6.0. We understand the
priority of an update of PowerSDR including a match to the new 5 MHz privileges
for UK customers. Our target is to present PowerSDR v2.6.0 including a new
FireWire driver by May. We will provide for the UK a functional BETA version
before the end of our Quality/Test cycle.
In addition when we are ready, I would like to accelerate the so called "TURF"
process for your radio by providing the necessary files either by your
distributor in UK or by me. If you would like to commence theses changes with
your national distributor you may do so. In case you have purchased the radio
directly from USA or got it second hand etc. you are welcome to get the files
from me.
In this case please provide per e-mail your
=> NoV letter from OfCom
=> type of radio
=> serial number of your radio
You will receive an instruction how to adjust your unit, the necessary software
(TurfClient)and the individual software key(Turf-File).
Cheers and 73s,

Klaus, DK7XL

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] 5 Mhz UK allocation

2013-01-10 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Victor,

what we do with Firmware/PowerSDR adjustment is kind of a "plug-in" which is
distributed
by the UK dealers. For those who didn´t purchase the unit from UK dealers I´ll
generate the
"plug-in" after receiving the individual NOV from OfCom.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] 5 Mhz UK allocation

2013-01-09 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hello Mike,

WE fully understand your frustration. We also would like to take a shurt cut
and
just open the entire 60m-Band for those who got permission to operate on 5 MHz
with new privileges since January 1st.

1. With the new regulations you are allowed for any mode within the "channels"
which
have different bandwidth. Hence we have to program more than just modifying
channels.

2. This capability update is on our active development list for PowerSDR
v2.6.x.
We will do our best to expedite this release. Our regular cycle for PowerSDR
is around 3 times per year.

Please consider the regulations for EU including UK are quite clear on this
subject.
We as a manufacturer have to adhere to the frequency allocations for Ham Radio
in order to comply to CE regulations (R&TTE Directive).

In other words: What is allowed to the licensed Ham Radio Operator(being owner
of equipment which may transmit everywhere at any power level etc.) is NOT
allowed for a manufacturer to sell within the EU legislative framework.

Unlike Softrock an other non-commercial SDR we have to present to our dealers
radios which they can configure poperly.

Unlike conventional radios (or NON-SDR)there is no diode to be removed to
open a TX. Full responsibility is with manufacturers for export to EU and is
with dealers for selling radios to consumers.

Once again - we understand any frustration on this subject and we are looking
for more speedy solutions.

Best regards,

Klaus, DK7XL

2013-01-01 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Happy New Year to you Ian and all readers of the reflector!

We are aware of the changes made to the UK 60m-Band and we are
working to implement theses changes in both firmware and PowerSDR.
The change will be distributed with next release of PowerSDR v2.6.x
We will try to do this as soon as possible.

Thanks for the very helpful visualisation of UK 60-Band.

Ray,

please contact Elain, G0UUT, who organised a EU net for "FLEXERS" on 20m-Band.
But there may be a schedule for 40m-Band as well.

In German language only we have every 1st Wednesday of the month a SDR-Bulletin
called "SDR-Runde" on 80m-Band at 3.672 kHz at 19:00 hrs. During autumn/winter
propagations one may listen to this. I would be glad to welcome you and anybody
else.

Hi Tony,

PowerSDR supports at present only TinyPreselector. Tiny Plus and Tiny Plus-CAT
have to be implemented in the code.
Please note that a tracking mode is not yet on the agenda for the preselector.

Using the preselector in local mode will give you full access to all
capabilities until PowerSDR has been adapted to
Tiny Plus-CAT.

Kind regards,

Klaus, DK7XL

Hello Jan,

we appreciate the interest in
V/U-upgrade for FLEX-5000A from
Europe very much.

FlexRadio Systems has been shipping
the FLEX-VU5K installed option
directly to customers
in CONUS and other non-EU countries
for several months now. It has been
our intention to
complete CE compliance testing
during this time to allow us to ship
the VU5K into the EU
countries.

Unfortunately, we have determined
that it is not feasible for us to
meet ROHS requirements
at this time. There are several
components on the VU5K boards that
are not ROHS and
a re-design would be required before
we could continue the CE testing
phase. Based upon
component availability, market
dynamics, and our limited resources,
we have made the difficult
decision to discontinue this CE
compliance effort for the VU5K
option.

As you know for sure strict
adherence to CE and ROHS is a
requirement for shipment of any
kit or product into the European
Union. FlexRadio Systems can not
jeopardise the ability to
sell other CE qualified products
into this extremely important
market.

Thank you very much for
understanding.

Best regards,

Klaus, DK7XL

Re: [Flexradio] John Basilotto, W5GI

2011-01-14 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Dear friends,

on behalf of our German SDR-group I
would like to express that we are
deeply saddened
now knowing, that John is silent key
forever. A few of us had the
privilege to meet John
in Dayton or to talk to him by radio
or on the phone. We were impressed
about his
determination and passion to
hamradio and his contribution to
Software Defined Radio
specifically.

We feel sad for his family and will
remember him as one of the first
enthusiasts on SDR.

[Flexradio] DJ2HZ silent key

2007-02-18 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Dear SDR-Friends,
I am sorry to announce that Werner (Ron), DJ2HZ, passed away in November 2006
after fighting hard against a severe disease.
Ron had been a member of the German SDR group since December 2005. Often he
took part during our Sunday SDR-meetings on 80m with his outstanding signal in
quality and strength. During an exhibition in Hannover I had the privilege to
meet Ron a few weeks before he died.
Ron showed an impressive attitude regarding his fate. We are missing Ron!

commenced with 2 crystal oscillators @7,100kHz and 7,098kHz.Comments
1. The main problem of the UA-1ex is the poor sensitivity or the high
(internal) noise. The sensitivity control at the LINE IN must be carefully
adjusted to exploit the (rather limited) dynamic range. Noise humps appear (+

BASICS/workshops)

Here is the actual information regarding the chances to meet each other during
HAM RADIO 2006. We will at least have two occasions:
Firstly - The presentation (open to public) from Gerald, K5SDR on Friday, 23rd,
12:00 - room "Schweiz"
Secondly - The SDR-1000 user meeting (of course open to public) with Gerald,
K5SDR on Saturday, 24th, 17:00 - room "Österreich"

BTW: FlexRadio products will be presented at the booth of Waters & Stanton, A1
- booth 401 and by
Beppe (WoodBoxradio) A1 - booth 167. There is also a booth from HB9 (Swiss)
representing USKA, SWISS-ARTG and SDXF.
They will promote SDR as well.

See you soon in F.-town!

[Flexradio] Operating Manual

2005-07-24 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi Gerald and others,

I know that writing documentation is a tremendous amount of work. Thanks for
the manual so much. Like many others I love to read and work with manuals as
printouts. I can't get used to read and work on the screen. Like the software
the manual is a living document. Maybe my suggestion is not new (if so I
apologize for that) but I would be glad if the manual will be updated in future
by publishing changes only i.e. by deleting, changing and adding new pages or
even making pen and ink changes only - whatever is appropriate.

I know that this will need a new page count (counting chapters and related
pages) but it will be worth the saving of ink and paper.

Again thanks for your efforts and good luck!

[Flexradio] 1.4.3

2005-07-20 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi all,
A few remarks on 1.4.3:
1 - Console reports itself as 1.4.2
2 - when loading database - error occurs
3 - PTT on DSB still not operating

[Flexradio] 1.4.1 remarks

2005-07-18 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi Bob, Eric, Frank and others!
A few remarks on 1.4.1:
1. A remarkable step forward - very stable and reliable - congrates!
2. TX-rejection ajustment still unsufficient (both Delta44 and Extigy)
3. In DSB-Mode PTT does not work (MOX ok)
4. When TUN(ing) the panadapter "freezes"

Have a nice and efficient week!

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR Beta 1.3.14 Released

2005-07-06 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi Dudley and others,

the TX-I/Q alignment (rejection) is a great feature if someone is interested to
squeeze the last dB's in performance (sideband suppression) out of the radio or
when using dual soundcard configuration. Those who have an analyser available
will feed a 2-tone signal into the MIC and observe the opposite sideband. Those
who have a second SDR-1000 use the radio with its capabilities for that very
purpose.

A second RX preferably with a narrow CW filter can do the trick as well: Either
single-tone or two-tone generation for the MIC input will do the job. Tune to
the unwanted signal in the opposite sideband (do not catch harmonics in the
desired passband!) and adjust to minimum.

Without adjustment using standard (supported) soundcards the opposite sideband
suppression is fine i.e. in the range af 40 to 50 dB. However for those like me
who are addicted to adjustment procedures, who want to have control over
everything (yes and getting sometimes into trouble) and for those who are
convinced that in ham radio we should strive only to a limited degree for
"black boxes" - well, then TX-I/Q alignment is a very attractive or charming
feature of our unsurpassed and uncomparable radio called SDR-1000 ...

I'll keep my contribution brief because I do not want to bother someone.

Have fun and enjoy the development of PowerSDR which is (for me) a real
adventure in ham radio.

[Flexradio] 1.3.13

2005-07-05 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Bob and others,
hope you had relaxing holidays. Some observations made with 1.3.13:
1. BIN has no effect
2. TX I/Q-alignement has no effect - sideband suppression ok.
I hope there is no intention to eliminate TX I/Q-alignement in the long run.
3. Display is not steady during T/R-switching
4. RX/TX buffer spill-over back again (Delta44: 256/512/2048
DMA/Audio/DSP-buffer setting)

[Flexradio] 2nd sound card

2005-06-30 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Bob and others,

let me explain on behalf of at least some German friends what we did expect
with the 2nd sound card. In the light of these expectations one might decide to
keep 2nd soundcard alive or not.

Main driving factor for dual soundcards were latency and TX/RX switching
problems. We wanted to get rid of long latency and some nasty spill-over
effects originated in the buffers when switching from TX to RX and vice versa.

Another important expectation was to build a SDR-1000 setup that will have only
one data cable running to the PC. No audio lines at all. Just a USB cable.
Period. Sounds nice! So we expected one day to attach or integrate 2 USB
soundcards with the board stack in one cabinet, hook that all to a minihub in
the cabinet thus having a nice transceiver running almost "wireless" with the
PC ...

However - we know and have learned how difficult it is to manage the related
software. To my knowledge no one of us could run 2 USB soundcard and getting a
clean SSB signal. We always got DSB stuff.

Our goal to run the SDR-1000 with limited cabeling remains. As far as I can
see, Bob, you and Eric, Frank and many other highly capable software engeneers
and Hams are very efficient to get latency down and get rid of TX/RX spillover
effects despite using just one soundcard. The performance with D44 is great.
Other high performance USB-cards will hopefully be supported by PowerSDR thus
giving us what we always wanted to have.

Bob and others, thank you so much for your great work!

Re: [Flexradio] 1.3.10 and now 1.3.11 image rejection on transmit (fwd)

2005-06-25 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Bob and others,

my apologies - I found the problem which has been as expected originated
"between the headphones". The reason was an abnormal low buffer setting of 64
at the DSP Tab ... please forgive me.

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] 1.3.10 and now 1.3.11 image rejection on transmit

Bob and others,

let me remind that also the AGC in my setup with versions starting 1.3.9a is
almost not working and that the TX-signal is completely out of the TX-filter
limits. My setup: 3-board-stack, Delta44 (no preamp, no addditional
soundcard)XP, SP2

My second 3-board-stack is running Audigy2 ZS - using 1.3.9a/10/12 with no
problems.

To demonstrate and compare the TX signals using 1.3.8 and 1.3.12 (both Delta44)
please have a look at the pictures shot from my second SDR. The TX is almost
quite, only random noise in the shack is driving. TX-filter limits are
identical (170Hz - 3000Hz). You may notice the brickwall shape in 1.3.8 and the
carrier that can be easily identified.

[Flexradio] 1.3.9a compander

2005-06-23 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi all,
hard to evaluate the compander (thanks for the new approach!) because sideband
suppression does'nt match the needs. Signal is readable in both sidebands. One
can observe the mismatch by looking at the spectrum during transmit. Changing
limits of the TX-filter does not have sufficient effects.

[Flexradio] Delta44

2005-05-31 Thread Klaus Lohmann
Hi All,

I am using the Delta44 - works great in RX/TX. Very low latency. No preamp for
mic necessary. For digital modes (including DRM reception)I use the Extigy. I
would like to have my digital TX-signal fed into the remaining port INS #4 -
but I cannot get it done using the Delta44 control and the SDR setup tabs.
Anyone having more success?
