From the SDR-1000 manual: High Performance Receiver Preamplifier The receiver front end incorporates a Sirenza Microdevices SGA-6286 SiGe HBT MMIC amplifier with a noise figure of less than 2dB. With the INA baseband gain of the SDR-1000 set to 26dB, the overall receiver noise figure is approximately 4dB. The TRX board also allows 0dB INA gain setting for large signal handling capability. A 10dB fixed attenuator may be switched in front of the LNA to increase IP3 when needed. Overall there are four gain settings done in hardware to allow you to optimize the front end for your needs. Re: [Flexradio] All using SVN 3166 or higher
That sort of models the modern amateur radio transceiver manufacturers. You may get an upgrade infrequently, after it has been tested many times. We are familiar with that process. One group of hams are attracted to the Flex-Radio products because of the performance and features. Another group enjoys the dynamics of a Software-Defined Radio and thrives on the improvements and new features. Do we limit the second group's access to placate the first group's fears of a software problem? Had the development been closed, we would have missed the excellent contributions from those not in the original developer group. What if instead of talking about SVN or alpha versions, we called it experimental or prototype versions? It implies the possibility of problems and the unsupported nature of the software. A kind word off- reflector to those who talk about issues with the experimental versions here should be adequate. Mike - AA8K Dave Gomberg wrote: IBM developed this fork in the 1970's when an operating system might support thousands of concurrent users on one CPU and cost millions per day to be down (like the principal Merril-Lynch machine that did about 40% of the NYSEs volume). Development started out experimentally, when the developer was sure it was right, he ran it on his own work machine in production. When he survived, he ran it on a machine shared with a few development buddies. When it passed that test, it ran on a shared machine for the whole development lab, in a version that might contain several changes all slotted for the same release schedule. When it was believed stable, it was shipped to the research labs for use in their environments (this was called alpha testing, since it was the first non-development test). When it passed alpha test, it was released to volunteer real users in the real world (this was called beta test, nobody risked big money on a beta test). Beta testers got direct to level 3 support so that problems could be quickly described and resolved. Finally a "general availability" release was announced, prepared, and delivered (in that order). Usually 60% of installations were on the latest release, 30% one release back, and sprinklings of others (who got tired of hearing that the fix to their problem was to upgrade). ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] Is it worth the trouble??
Another source of the chatter here is from guys trying out the SVN beta versions. The betas are versions as the programmers work on them. Sometimes bugs show up, but after a bug report is filed on the Flex-Radio web site, they jump on it and there is usually a fix in the next beta. I once saw a CW keying issue show up, it was discovered and reported, and it was fixed, and available for down load in less than two hours! Now, that is not typical, but compare the Flex-Radio response to problems with that of big manufacturers of ham gear. You don't have to participate in the beta releases, though it's a lot of fun playing with the new features and hunting for bugs. If I find an issue in a beta version, I just close that window and click on a stable version and my Flex-Radio works just fine. It has revitalized ham radio for me. What fun! Actually, it is a goal, and part of the success, of the open source SDR groups, that things are not done the way of the rest of the planet. There is plenty of room for those who, for example, wish recoup their investment in a proprietary CoDec and want to require everything to pass through it. Re: [Flexradio] Flex-3000 power supply requirements
Dave, I have been disappointed with automotive "starting" batteries for a DC power supply. They wear out too soon in this type of service. If your voltage doesn't sag significantly in transmit, you may be fine. Watch out for the bargain batteries. They are often made in another country to low specs. In one USA brand name I researched, it was sub-contracted to another company and actually manufactured by a third company in Mexico. Do your research. I am using a pair of six volt deep-cycle golf cart batteries in series for my main power supply and home power-failure lighting. To maintain charge, I have a 75 amp power supply with an intelligent charge/float option to minimize gas production and maximize battery life. Make sure that the battery wires are appropriately fused. You do NOT want a short circuit with that much energy available. For the wall-wart I use a small clamp-on at the wart and another at the router or hub. The wire is usually small enough to go through the clamp-on a couple of times. I am planning on putting the modem, router, and hubs into a metal enclosure, but first I have to tame the nearby broadcast transmitters. I sure miss the thousand foot Vee antenna I had on the farm. It did pick up the neighbor's electric fence on wet days though. BTW, on my 125 foot run underground to the other building, I used individually shielded twisted pair Belden Datalene. I thought I'd be smart and use some 27 Volt MOVs to protect it. Data wouldn't go until I took the MOVs out and used gas tubes. My telephone wiring is shielded up to the set jack with a clamp-on on each set cord. My alarm wiring is shielded. DSC says to not use shielded to the keypad, but the Datalene (low capacitance) is working fine. My old town house even had shielded AC wiring. It was an old type, after knob-and-tube, with the hot lead center conductor, insulation, then a stranded ground wrapped around the hot, and more insulation for the outer jacket. Coax power cable! Re: [Flexradio] barefoot SDR-1000 audio/power measurement
Bruce, I think that, with the sensor on the 100 Watt power amplifier the power is measured. Without the PA sensor, it is a relative power. Mike - AA8K Bruce Walker wrote: I have an SDR-1000 from which I recently removed the 100WPA, so it's now a barefoot 1W version. I am currently using an FA-66 with it. I've noticed that since I've removed the 100WPA, the displayed power is about 3dB higher than what I read on my QRP power meter (WM-1); when PowerSDR says 1W out, I'm measuring 500mW, and that holds with scale (100mW displayed, 50mW measured). Most of my operation is QRPp, and my WM-1 has seemed accurate: it matches up at 10W with another meter and matched PowerSdr indications with the SDR-1000 PA at 1-10W, and it scales appropriately with attenuation. I wanted to verify the sound card output calibration using the Sound Card Output Voltage test in PowerSDR, but when I remove the line out plug from the back of the SDR-1000 and click on the Test button, there is *no* voltage on the line out plug (I expected to sanity check the ~2.27VAC default for the FA-66). A Tune at PowerSDR==1W yields 0.82VAC on line out, but not sure what that should be. My tests have been on 30m into a dummy load. --bruce W1BW ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] Issuse with new firmware 1.2.2.0
Gerald, we like the frequent updates. If there is an issue, we can go back to a previous version. The folks who want stable can stick with a stable version. Re: [Flexradio] issues with echo/rf on transmit with FA66/SDR 1000
Hi Paul, Please see these FRS Knowledge Base articles: < http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50280.aspx?Keywords=echo > < http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50288.aspx?Keywords=echo > < http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50160.aspx?Keywords=sdr-1000+specifications > I use ferrite on the leads to my SDR-1000 and PC. I use isolation transformers on the sound card cables. That also gets rid of the DC "hump" on the panadapter. The RFI can sometimes be caused by ground loops. I'm using a big Marantz Stereo HiFi amplifier on the sound card output, and if I ground the chassis to station ground, it hums. I use an old Shure M67 audio mixer for microphone gain, rather than software gain in the sound card. Got it cheap on eBay. The M67 does a lot better in rejecting RFI than my sound card. And I get to play with the knobs mixing different mics and watch the VU meter. Takes me back to my broadcast days. 8) RF in the shack can be a symptom of an antenna issue. I try to decouple my feedlines at the antenna and also where the feedlines enter the shack, right after my grounding plate. Ferrite is my friend. I remember running some rigs back in the 1960's where, if my lips touched the metal microphone, or my finger touched the ground on the key, I could feel RF warming. BTW, the SDR-1000 is such a good performer that you need a low-impedance connection to a power supply than can provide a solid 25 Amps. Use heavy leads to the SDR-1000. I was chasing down a problem and discovered that my power supply was not providing enough current. Re: [Flexradio] [OT] Mac mini as PowerSDR machine
Wow, RSX-11M? I haven't used that in a quarter-century. Gary Unruh and I wrote a 3GL for it that kept a big roomful of data entry gals happy on a PDP 11/70 with 2 MEGAbytes of memory. I even cobbled up a clock card for it so I could run 45.45 baud and copied the 20 meter RTTY autostart net at the same time. I think I still have a copy of my Baudot to ASCII converter assembler program and the custom card. I got pretty nervous changing the wirewrap on that expensive CPU in order to get access to my oddball clock card. I think it was 150 baud that I hacked to 45.45 baud. Gary, a veteran IBMer, was my mentor. What a guy, brilliant! I loved the way it kept the old versions of your files and you could purge /Keep ;2 to delete everything but the current version and one previous copy when disc space got tight. I used to have to key the bootstrap loader program on the console switches in binary to start it. I think I still remember the program. Somehow I don't think the DEC 11/70 would be fast enough to do the DSP. Any HP MPE fans here? Now there was an intuitive system. Too bad the cryptic UNIX killed it. I loved HP's TurboImage. That was a bulletproof database. It was lightning fast, if you kept up on DB maintenance. In a decade, I only lost one morning's worth of data to a crash. This was before RAID. I remember one day realizing that I hadn't booted the system for a year and a half. Over 60 simultaneous users. Try THAT with Windows. Mike - AA8K Brian Lloyd wrote: > > Precisely. Re: [Flexradio] 2008/May/24 FRF TeamSpeak audio - dropouts
Thanks to those who asked direct about my configuration. Sorry for the delay in responding. We had a death in the family last month and everything got pushed aside. This past TeamSpeak session I ran a second PC with TeamSpeak at the same time. Both PCs had 2% to 4% packet loss. The only thing in common between the two PCs are: running Grisoft AVG 8, they are using the same router, they are both using Comcast broadband. Is anyone else getting drop-outs and delayed packets with Comcast, or TeamSpeak? I watched the router activity lights and also was able to use Mozilla to reference web sites without any effect on the packet loss. No big loading issue. The second PC is an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2 GHz, 1 GB, XP Media Center SP2. The PC is stock plus Firefox, AVG 8, and a fresh download of TeamSpeak. First PC: running Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 Pentium 4 1.60 GHz 1 GB RAM Grisoft AVG 8 Windows Firewall (now turned off) No ASIO or VAC; the Flex Radio is on a different PC. TeamSpeak 22.0.32.60 In TeamSpeak the settings are: Sound Driver: Wave Intel(r) Integrated Audio Bandwidth: Unlimited (I tried others during a TeamSpeak session, and the lower were worse) Process Priority: now set to High MS Process Explorer showed plenty of idle time and made sure that AVG wasn't doing a scan. In case it was a file system overhead issue, I purged files off my hard drives, did a defrag (they needed it), turned off Restore, powered down my cable modem and LinkSys router, did a PC cold start and just ran TeamSpeak. Still 5% to 6% packet loss on me. I pulled the LAN connection to my IRLP to make sure it wasn't dragging my Comcast broadband down. Still, every 3 seconds there would be a dropout on Teamspeak. I used to have 1% or less packet loss before. I listen to NPR frequently and don't have dropouts there. Watching the router and cable modem, the data lights don't have a heavy duty cycle, as when I'm downloading a file. Very puzzling. Re: [Flexradio] SDR1000 & Edirol FA66 - echo on transmit
Hi Paul, There is a latency (delay) between what you say into the microphone (or what you send on CW) and what goes out on the air. Most reports of echo turn out to be RFI. The transmitted signal is picked up by the microphone input slightly behind your speech and is an echo of what you just said. I'm guessing that higher gain in DX or Compander is revealing the RF pickup. If you have a second receiver, try transmitting into a dummy load and listen on the second receiver. Then compare with transmitting on your antenna. Well Owen, in the same sense that the ATU and Byp controls are still there even if you do not have the antenna tuner; or the Mox button is still there if you have the receive-only version. Besides, when version 2 comes out, there can be a screen customized for the SDR-1000. There will probably be plenty, once the user-interface and signal-processing are different software. I'm just glad that FRS has chosen to continue to have the software support the SDR-1000. I love mine. Re: [Flexradio] FW: The inherent muddiness of typical amateurtransceiver audio without EQ
I suspect that it is because we always try to push the limits in ham radio. Sort of like the hot-rodder tinkering with the vehicle to squeeze even more performance out of it. Stereo: why not? Using independent sideband, we could do that. What better place to experiment than ham radio? There are several places in the spectrum where we can try wider-bandwidth transmissions. If we are dedicated to narrow bandwidth and efficiency, maybe we should be on CW. Lee Mushel wrote: > How on earth did this high fidelity audio business ever get started? Yep, the Dayton audio is plagued with dropouts, and sometimes I had to boost the gain up to 20 dB for the off-microphone voices. If you have ever tried to use a receiver at the Dayton Hamvention, you can understand why it is a challenge to use a wireless connection there. [Flexradio] Hint for downloading the TeamSpeak recording
The download file is in a Zip file. The file itself is in MP3 format. Your Windows Media Player should be able to play that and other players can as well. If you download it from the first link in my e-mail, be sure to save it with a .zip extension, otherwise Windows won't know what to do with it. If you click on the second link in my e-mail, it will open the HamSDR web page. The HamSDR web site download page has two places to click on for each entry. The column on the left, labeled "Download" sends the file to your PC, or, you can LEFT click on the place where it says, "Right Click to Save" (I know, it's backwards). That will download the zip file, and then you can virus scan it, (don't trust even me) then open the file inside with your player. 73, Mike - AA8K ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] New w2rf QSK mods now available
My signal/one CX7A had very good QSK. I found the noise while transmitting to be irritating, much like voice VOX with a short delay time so that it goes to receive in between syllables. It's nice to have a little quiet while you are sending to think about what you are communicating. I suppose that for a contester or DX hound QSK is useful because you are just pushing the keyer memory button and listening for the signals of the others. But, then again, I used to go from receive to transmit by putting the receiver in Standby, changing the antenna to the transmitter with the knife switch, then turn on the HV in the transmitter. :) Mike - AA8K Jerry Flanders wrote: > > I hope someone with a better "lab" than mine can put some of these > rigs to the test as you request and actually record and publish the > resulting audio. Just before the TeamSpeak session started, I was called out for an overturned tanker with a small leak of anhydrous ammonia. The tanker was on the expressway near a mobile home park. It was morning before I returned home. Something to keep in mind is not to be a quicker-picker-upper. I was in contact with the MCP on 2 meter FM on my way to one of the shelter sites to supply communication. A traffic net started on the repeater. Net control was unaware of the hazardous materials operation and evacuation. I arrived at the shelter location and traffic net control was still reading his "preamble" speech. He made a call for check-ins, and I tried to call in. He repeated back a long list of check-ins and my call wasn't there. He made a second call for check-ins and I called in. He repeated back another list of calls and mine wasn't there. He then went to the first station who started yakking. I tried to interrupt when that station ended, I tried to break in when net control turned it over to the second station. In frustration I resorted to using my HSEM 800 MHz digital walkie talkie to contact the MCP and report in. How embarrassing when we have been trying to demonstrate the advantage of ARES/RACES. DXing and contests have taught us how to be quick on the PTT trigger. This technique isn't necessary in the other aspects of ham radio. I have been training myself to wait for one second after the other station finishes before I transmit. I'm surprised how it has made my ham radio experience richer. And net control stations, please shorten your preambles; we're in communication, not broadcasting. Also, consider taking check-ins in groups of three and reading back the call signs after each group. That way a caller knows whether he's been heard without waiting until net control stops taking check-ins. Re: [Flexradio] [WWW] Updated announcements from FlexRadio [2m/70cm transverter]
Ed, you can use an application like Ham Radio Deluxe to scan your transceiver through CAT. By not scanning, FRS avoids FCC issues with scanning receivers; their permission to sell one with scanning would take lots of effort and probably cripple PowerSDR. FRS already has to put systems in place to prevent out- of-band transmission capability.
