Re: [Flexradio] Slightly off-topic
I had the same thing happen the first time I connected my Pro 7 to my 5000A. (To keep it on topic) I discover the issue was with the thick padding was compressing and cutting off the sound between the earpiece and my ear. I had to bend the head band and relieve some of the stress on the earpiece and it has not happened again. It took about 10 minutes and changing cords and switching sides to figure it out. If you haven't seen the pads, they measure 1 1/8 inches from the surface of the earpiece vs. the Pro Set Elite at 3/8 of an inch. Re: [Flexradio] Garbled output
I had a similar problem when I added my PR40. I could not find where the RF was getting in. After a few days I noticed a coax cable that was supposed to be connect to a radio was open from a dipole. RF was coming down the ungrounded coax from the dipole and getting into the mic line. Grounded the coax and RF was gone. I made the mistake of telling a fellow ham and a case study was made of this at the next club meeting. Lesson learned - check everything coming into the shack. Everything into or out of the F3K has ferrites on it (except the RF cable to the amp and I have tried them there too), and I have tried adding more ferrites to each existing cable, no cigar. The degree of garbling definitely depends on the power to the antenna, turning on the amp makes it much worse. I have checked all the ground wires, they seem sound and tight. I am kind of at wits end as to what to try next, any ideas? Just about all of the leads to/from the PC also have ferrites. Re: [Flexradio] SDR
I read all about this and found it to be a very neat idea. You got button and knobs and you can reassign them to the order you want. I used it for a few days, changed some knobs around but could never find a place to put it on the shack table that fit in. Other have and enjoy. Seems like it was less than $100 BUCKS to try it. If I had it to do over again, I would have put that money toward a touch screen. I should have given this to someone that wanted one instead, I have purchased a Behringer Power Amp, Power Monitors, and a Behringer sound board for the shack and my new DJ in the Man Cave. If the Radio bands go dead, the music Bands take over the man cave! By the way, my new Alpha 9500 came in on Friday at 4:00 and was connected to the 5000A quickly and the Palstar HF-Auto and Palstar AT2k sat on top for any extra needs. Felt bad and ended up in the walkin clinic on Satruday morning getting a shot for a fall cold (sinus infection) and only got in 22 hours. Knocked out 777 QSOs so 35 QSO per hour is hot a lot, but when you were feeling well and rested, and had some family things to do, I was very plased with that many DX contact on one weekend. Had over 25 + comments about the audio and the signal strength from the Flex 5000a, Heil PR40, and Alpha 9500. The only thing that did not get finished is the extra 16 feet added to the tower with a new Force 12 Delta 4 SLX that was delayed by the companies sale and move from Texas to Colorado. With that, I will be able to hear all of those I was talking to. It worked like a charm today. Since the Alpha 9500 has a computer interface for operation of QRO for remote. I am putting that project after setting up the new D-Star repeater. Paul, Great post. I would like to know more about these settings. I question if one setting fits all? The factory sends out one setting, how do we determine the right one for out individual radio set ups? Based on the knowledge I have now it's trial and error, but there must be a better way based on the engineering of the product. Can anyone share knowledge so we all learn? Re: [Flexradio] Important Flex SDR Performance Factors
I had emailed my thoughts to Craig earlier today. My thoughts are that the best value for a $1 today is on a used Flex 5000a being sold by a Flexer moving up to the 6000 series. If he didn't like it, the depreciation hit he would take for selling it in six months could be non-existent. For those of us with 5000s know how great the receive AND the transmit can be when properly set and matched with the proper mic. Of all the mic's I have tried, the Heil PR 40 stands above the rest. I can hardly go a night with out getting a compliment on the audio. [Flexradio] Microphone Recommendation?
I have been running a Heil PR 40 for almost a year and love it. I set the Transmit filter at 80 and 3080 to use the full 3000 cycles of SSB and then adjust with the equalizer to fit my voice, usually in a curve that looks somewhat like a smile. As a backup mic, I have a MLX 990 (requires a power source) I purchased online used for around $65. 9 out of 10 times it is hard to tell the difference in which mic is running. The Flex 5000 compensates for a lot of regular weaknesses in cheaper mics. I have three other Heil mics I have collected in the shack, the GM4, GM5, and the Gold Elite. When I put these on the Flex, I limit my ability. If I want get a sound like the DX Dream Machine of the HC-4 element in the GM4, I adjust the Flex settings and use the PR-40. Let me say first I love Heil mics, and the HC-4 element worked great for me on my FT920 hauling in the DX contacts. The HC-4 element concentrates on the frequency from 500 Hz to 3,800 Hz with a 10 dB rise at 2,000 Hz. If I set my Flex transmit filter at 500 Hz low and 3,500 Hz high and peak the equalizer at 2,000 Hz, I get a sharp, almost shrill high pitch voice very similar to the HC 4. I am sure Bob can explain that it might be similar but something is left out, but for me in a pile up it works great. I pull up the set up screen, change the low end to 350 or some higher number and give the call. As soon as they give me the call back, I punch in 80 to put the base back in and make a regular sounding contact. The MLX 990 will do the same, all because the power to make it sound great comes from the Flex 5000. ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
