[Flexradio] Mute doesn't work with VAC

2012-09-10 Thread Rod Brink
With my 5K I'm using VAC to route audio to my onboard sound card. I have the
powered speakers connected to line-out on the sound card. Am doing this in
order to hear audio from both the 5K and from online streaming (YouTube, etc).
It works just fine except for one thing: the Mute button on the console
doesn't work (which doesn't surprise me). Is there another way to obtain the
Mute function (short of hitting the Stop button)? I guess I could forget about
VAC and run a cable from the 5K speaker output to line-in on the sound card,
but would prefer to keep using VAC.

Thanks and 73,
Rod KQ6F

[Flexradio] Any way to fiddle with PA bias settings?

2012-08-23 Thread Rod Brink
In performing some two-tone tests at different power levels on my 5k I've
discovered some interesting things concerning IMD products. Using the BITE
utility I can measure bias currents for both the driver and PA Final, but do
not see any way of changing them. (BTW, my PA bias is nominally 2.3A which
seems high to me, however I seem to remember Tim saying that it has been
increased to "improve voice quality"). Anyway, I'd like to experiment with
different bias levels. Is there a way to do that?

Re: [Flexradio] Must turn on PSDR twice

2012-07-06 Thread Rod Brink
I too have this problem. I believe it's related to the default Sample Rate
that comes up on startup in Flexradio Global Settings (blue icon on the
desktop). If the default doesn't match the sample rate last used in the main
program (in Setup/Audio), it takes two starts to get them in sync. In my case
I always run at 96k but the default in Global Settings frequently (but not
always) comes up 48k. Then it takes two starts. If the default comes up 96k
it takes only one start.

I'm running W7. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I've mentioned this before to Flex Support but apparently they don't see this
happening in the lab.

[Flexradio] v2.3.5 and W7?

2012-03-09 Thread Rod Brink
I had trouble installing v2.0.22 on my W7 machine (late model i5 core, "right"
Firewire card, etc). Neal Campbell had to finally bail me out by taking over
my machine via TeamViewer and working his magic. I still don't know exactly
what he did - it all went so fast. So now I'm timid about installing v2.3.5
for fear that history will repeat itself.

I'd be very interested in hearing from any W7 users as to how their v2.3.5
install went..

Re: [Flexradio] [Flex radio] Power up problem

2012-01-10 Thread Rod Brink
The 48K sampling rate shown in the Firewire control panel is the default
setting on power up. PowerSDR, during the initialization, will instruct the the
Firewire driver to re-set the sampling rate to the one configured in Setup.
We have seen occurrences where this communication between PowerSDR and the
radio does not complete properly resulting in the behavior. We have notified
the developer of the Firewire driver of this problem and hopefully it will be
resolved in a future release of the driver.

Re: [Flexradio] [Flex radio] Power up problem

2012-01-10 Thread Rod Brink
Tim -

This startup problem occurs immediately after my machine is booted up, so
there's no opportunity for hibernation. Also my power management is set to
High Performance.

The problem seems to be caused by initial difference between the default sample
rate in Flex Radio Global Settings (48K) vs the 96K I've selected in PSDR. It
takes two startup tries for them to get "in sync". If instead of 96K I select
48K in PSDR, there's no problem and it starts up on the first try.

Am running W7, 64 bit.

There are at least two others having the same (or similar) problem, so it's not
just me.

You didn't mention your sample rate but am guessing it's more than 48K. I run
96K and have the same problem as you. I've found that PSDR will run the first
time if after bringing it up BUT BEFORE STARTING you go to the Flex Radio
Global Setting icon and change the default 48k sample rate to 96K (or whatever
in your case).

Have talked to Dudley about this but he hasn't seen it anywhere else. So I

[Flexradio] Why doesn't MON button work in AM

2011-10-28 Thread Rod Brink
In AM mode the MON button is greyed out and the monitor function disabled. I
first noticed this when I recorded another station and played it back to him
over the air. I could see it on the panadaptor and the other station heard it
OK, but all I heard in my speaker was some feedthru squeaks. This seems to be
the case in late versions of PSDR as well as earlier versions. Am running the

Why is MON disabled in AM?

[Flexradio] Installation didn't go so well

2011-07-23 Thread Rod Brink
Am attempting to bring up PSDR v.2.0.22 for the first time on a new computer.

similar machines:

Everything was going along nicely per the Quick Start Guide until I got error
message that the drivers were not successfully installed. I had Windows Auto
Update disabled at the time (exasperated by the daily updates). That may have
been the problem according to the subsequent explanation messages, altho I
don't see why. Anyway, I turned Auto Updates back on and started the whole
process over. But now it never gets to the point where the computer is
shutdown and the radio gets turned on. If I turn on the radio anyway, its only
operational mode is Demo.

I've tried completely removing v.2.0.22 and downloading a fresh batch. Even
tried downloading the latest v.2.1.5. Same problem. I tried searching for
database.xml do delete it, but nothing came up. I guess that applies only to
older versions running under Windows xp?

So I seem to be stuck.

Tim or anybody else: any suggestions?

Just received my new "super" computer that I ordered specifically to operate my

has various PCI-E cards from Syba, StarTech, Vantec, etc - but I can't tell if
any have the favored Lucent or TI chipsets. I'm also worried about the fact
that my new system is 64-bit. Can anybody recommend the right card to buy?

[Flexradio] v.2.0.22 startup problems

2011-07-14 Thread Rod Brink
Am having trouble starting up v.2.0.22 on my 5K. There are three scenarios:
1) I double-click on the PSDR icon and nothing happens. When I double-click
again, I get error message that other PSDR instances are running. The only way
to recover is to restart my computer.
2) After double-clicking the icon, the startup screen comes up but the startup
sequence gets only about 1/3 of the way through and the startup screen abruptly
disappears. Double-clicking again usually succeeds but sometimes it takes
three tries.
3) Everything comes up properly on the first try. This doesn't happen very
often.

I have tried both power-up sequences: power-up computer first, then radio and
vice-versa. Doesn't seem to make any difference.

Am running Windows XP, SP3. CPU is Celeron 2.40 Ghz. 480MB RAM.

Have not seen this problem on the reflector and gather that I'm doing something
stupid. Suggestions welcome.

[Flexradio] 5K PA and Driver bias readings

2011-07-14 Thread Rod Brink
I have the preliminary 2007-2008 service manual for the 5K and am running the
BITE tests. It states that the bias currents for the driver and PA should be
200 ma and 1.4A, respectively. The actual values I'm getting are considerably
higher than that: 1.0A and 2.264A(nominal). These values are confirmed with
an ammeter placed in series with the +13.8v power supply. Am guessing they are
correct and that they've been intentionally increased since the original
service manual was published. Is this the case?

Parenthetically, the values shown in the Debug window vary quite a bit from
reading-to-reading, although the actual ammeter current remains constant. This
seems puzzling...

[Flexradio] Delta 44 problem

2010-10-22 Thread Rod Brink
I know I'm wy behind the times but am still happily running the
SDR1K. Well, semi-happily. I've got a peculiar problem with the Delta
44 sound card driver. It works fine at 48k sample rate but not at 96k.
Here's the kicker - if I reinstall the driver (5.10.00.5057v3) it works
fine at both sample rates. But when I shut down the computer and
restart, the 96k doesn't work anymore. Something is getting trashed
either during shutdown or startup.

Now for my mea culpa. On the same computer I once tried to get the
SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS to work. I installed the SoundBlaster drivers
but never got the card to work. So I gave up, uninstalled everything (I
think), and bought the Delta 44. Which is what I've should have done in
the beginning. I'm thinking there's an evil SoundBlaster gremlin
leftover that's causing the grief.

Anybody have any idea how I can find and destroy the gremlin?

[Flexradio] Fault trouble with Alpha 8410

2010-07-03 Thread Rod Brink
Am having problems operating a SDR-1000 in ESSB mode into my new Alpha
8410. The amp frequently faults on voice peaks in spite of a much
reduced drive level. I looked at my peak power into the amp using a
fast peak-reading wattmeter (LP100A). Most of the time the power peaks
are in the 10-15 watt range, but on some words the peaks are much
higher, 30-40 watts. I turned up the mic gain to get 0 dB ALC readings
and turned down the drive to compensate, thinking that would resolve the
problem. It helped but didn't completely do the trick. Next I
decreased the ALC attack time to 1 ms. That doesn't help either, nor
does changing the ALC Decay and Hang times.

The Alpha fault-detection circuits are very fast acting. I complained
to them about it, but to no avail. They seem to think it should be that
way.

As a matter of personal preference, am running an earlier version of
PSDR (v. 1.12.1). Have any improvements been made to ALC in subsequent
versions?

Re: [Flexradio] FW: Flex3000 SSB TX bandwidth only 3.65k?

2009-05-11 Thread Rod Brink

Am puzzled about this. Until Eric clarified I thought the same as Ray
 - any bandwidth limitation would have to be imposed by PowerSDR.
Since the latest PowerSDR v.1.18.0 does not have a selection for the

3000 in the Setup menu, I figured you'd be able to select any
bandwidth you want - same as 1000 and 5000. So apparently they do the
high cut in the 3000 hardware somehow - right?

Eric Wachsmann
Mon, 04 May 2009 15:48:55 -0700

Actually, there is a limit of 3650Hz on the high cut for each sideband (i.e.
7.3kHz on AM/FMN/DSB) when using the FLEX-3000.

Stig,

You may have misinterpreted the FLEX-3000 specifications. The spec says,
"Flat Response 10 Hz to 3.650 KHz (SSB)". This means that the audio
response is flat within that range and no guarantees are made outside of
that range. It does not mean that the TX audio is limited to 3.65 kHz.

The actual transmit filter width that can be set is entirely controlled by
the software. Therefore, it is the same for the FLEX-3000 as it is for the
SDR-1000 and the FLEX-5000.

If you increase the transmit filter width to greater than about 3.1 kHz,
the
software will give you a warning about compliance with all applicable rules
& regulations. However, you can ignore the warning and increase the filter
width to whatever you desire. The Federal Communications Commission, the
government agency that regulates the Amateur Radio Service in the United
States, has recently ruled that ESSB is "not in accordance with good
amateur
and engineering practice" on the crowded HF bands. Therefore, US amateurs
are not supposed to use ESSB on HF.

If I am wrong on this, someone from Flex can shoot me down, but the way I
understand it, you should have no problems using the FLEX-3000 for ESSB.
Just don't do it in the United States.

[Flexradio] S-meter type

2009-03-21 Thread Rod Brink
The PowerSDR feature list indicates there are two S-meter displays that
can be selected - edge type and LED bar graph type. All I've ever seen
is the edge type. How do you change to the LED bar graph type? Can't
find anything about it in KC..

[Flexradio] Suppressed carrier

2008-08-11 Thread Rod Brink
I've noticed that with my SDR1K the suppressed carrier on SSB becomes
less suppressed as I go up in frequency. On 10M it's pretty bad. Am
wondering if the SDR5K does better in this department..?
