Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Presentation

2005-09-14 Thread Ryk Houseman
To All,

I will be making a presentation this weekend on the SDR1000 and I would be interested in any really pertinent WAV files that you guys may have recorded.  Please send the WAV files to me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

Re: [Flexradio] I worked N6DQ last nite on his RFI free SDR, nice going Rick!

2005-09-10 Thread Ryk Houseman
Hi Alan!

Thanks for the flowers.  Yes, I grounded the Delta 44 breakout box direct to the SDR gnd, the computer direct to the SDR gnd.  I use an Astron 25 amp switching supply which is velcroed to the side of the Dell.  I have DX Engineering RF clamp toroids on each lead of the pwr supply just before the terminals on the SDR.  The SDR is velcroed to the top of the Dell just behind the face panel line.  The Delta 44 is velcroed on the top left rear and the HOSA cable leads cut back to just reach the SDR black box.  The entire system is then grounded from the SDR to my station gnd.  When I turned it on it was "clean".

I use a PR40 mic to a Presonus Digitube mic preamp/3 band parametric.  I run the balanced line out (pins 2 and 3 on the XLR) to each of the sound card inputs, pin 1 common to each.  I boosted the 2k and 3k fairly brightly as Alan said with the Digitube and use the SDR equalizer just for touch up(especially to get rid of Mr. Nasty 160.

I am getting nothing but great reports on the audio!  Thanks, Flex Radio for a great break-through product!

I worked Rick, N6DQ on 14.178 SSB last nite in a group. He was running his SDR into an amplifier at 500 watts and his HiFi SSB was very clean without a trace of RFI ! Rick sounded exceptional, but a little "bright" for my taste. But the high frequencies show up the RFI 1st in my experience, and there was none on Rick's signal! How did he do it? He grounded together the Dell computer chassis to the SDR box and tied that to the station ground. He cut the Hosa cables down to 6" and velcroed the grounded breakout box to the SDR box. Also he used a separate Astron PS with short power leads. My SDR is still having occational RFI issues, the inline isolators, beads and toroids did not solve the problem completely. If the gain is up just a little - back comes the RFI shadow! I'm starting to think one of those mini cpu cards in a
shielded box bolted to the SDR cabinet might be better then ripping apart my computer desk and all the rest. Will it ever end?IMHO, this demonstrates the flaw with using a soundcard in a near RF field! If the RF is getting in some other way then the audio cables - even optical coupling may not guarantee freedom from RFI! The A/D & D/A must be RF shielded and a computer is not the ideal location for that! The 870 is back online and the SDR offline, until I can come up with a solution to this MESS.BTW, no RFI is evident using the TS-870 driving a 1kw amplifier.___FlexRadio mailing listFlexRadio@flex-radio.bizhttp://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz

Could you please confirm that my black box has the

[Flexradio] PA Bias Adj.

2005-09-01 Thread Ryk Houseman
Hello to all!

I understand that SDR1000's shipped after 7-15 already
have the bias adjustment made. I am wondering if my
unit, which was shipped around that date, has this
adjustment.
Who can check this out for me?

I have been receiving such great comments on my audio
that I suspect that the bias adj has been done to my
black box. How often does FlexRadio intend to upgrade
the black box? Can I send the unit in and have it
retrofitted or just purchase the new unit ?

I have been on 14168 with the audio guru's and I have
received very positive comments about the audio. I am
not touching anything on mine!

[Flexradio] ON THE AIR!

2005-08-28 Thread Ryk Houseman
Hello All!

Finally got the SDR1000 operational after completing
the breakout control box and dressing (shortening) the
audio and power cables. I have received glowing
reports on the quality of the audio and even Art Bell
on 3840 khz admitted that it sounded superb. VE7RF,
Jim, commented that I sounded better than his local AM
broadcast station!

On a second item, I tried to install the virtual com
port program on ver 1.4.4 but the install wizard wasnt
able to copy the driver into the program. More to
come on that one.

As I become more familiar with the rig, I'm sure I'll
have more questions.but for now it sure seems to
work very well!

I will send pictures .oh, where do I send
pictures?

Thanks,

Ryk

[Flexradio] Relay Break out box

2005-08-22 Thread Ryk Houseman
I am interested in the relay breakout box for the CTRL 15 pin output.  I have made a box using low current relays and insulated 1/4" phone jacks.  Most of my outputs are normally open but I have two that are TRS norm open com norm closed.  What will be the jacks used? Price?

I hate to change the subject, but is the software written yet to simultaneously receive VFO A and VFO B?

Item TWO:  When I interface with TRX-Manager via USB/Serial Port (say COM 5), can I use the Kenwood setting for the SDR-1000?  Could I run it in a second window?

Lastly, can I use the internal Dell soundcard for PSK31with another USB/Serial Port (say COM 6) with the Digipan software running in a second window?
Lastly,  I am making a breakout box for the multicontrol DB connector using low current relays with insulated 1/4" phone plugs.  Any suggestions on the relay to use?

OH, I have the SDR up and running in the receive mode via the RX terminal on my TS870sounds great!

Thanks,

Rick

This is correct. Our algorithm for the display is dumb except it should have a capital D. If you look closely enough, especially on AM signals such as SW broadcast or WWV, you can sometimes see multiple peaks around the largest peak. These can be interpreted to give a very accurate frequency offset, much more accurate than now. This is in the category of "We knew it should be done and one of these days . . . ". As it stands, you are limited to about 10 Hz accuracy in the freq. calibration based on the display. This can and will be corrected.BobJerald Jones wrote:> This is not really a freq change, it is a display change and a change > in the right hand lower display, numerical freq indicator.
