Re: [Flexradio] new Win 7 computer and 1500

2014-09-08 Thread dave dabay
Installed the new Win7 box, and running well, so far.

Mostly uneventful process, thank you to all who provided process and things to
back up ideas. My dual monitor card (Zotac) was plug and play.

Two things remain, getting used to Win7

and a niggle with Fldigi….on the XP machine I could hover over a call sign
and Fldigi would return a pop up that either showed the log entry or the
country. I compared the XP and Win7 machines for the cty.dat file and that it
was in the fldigi.files tree (this is 3.21.83) and it is/was. But no pop up
unless the call is in my log. I may remove and reload fldigi in a week so,
once I have a reliability base line set, to see if something happened there.

Thanks in advance, and oh, by the way,

my CPU % dropped from almost 30% with the old box - to never more than 5% with
the Win7 box

Tim

I have not gotten a digest from the mail list in several days and noticed that
the archive stops at Aug 14th…has something changed or is there a problem with
it?

I tried to resubscribe, but it said I was already subscribed.

thanks

[Flexradio] new Win 7 computer and 1500

2014-08-29 Thread dave dabay
I have ordered a new pc to use with my Flex 1500 and would like to pave
the way to a rock solid box like XP was.

Process to upgrade and move my 1500? VAC? Fldigi? VSPE?

Pitfalls or things to check on the Win7 Pro 64Bit?

thanks in advance

[Flexradio] Flex freezing

2014-03-15 Thread dave dabay
Craig

I have a 1500 and it is running XP on an old Dell 530S, my cpu utilization is
between 15-20%.

I too, had freezing last year, and after a few months of freezing and blue
screens…I found that the constant updates of the AVG web security and various
background programs waking up or updating in the background was causing both
the blue screens as well as the SDR freezes.

I Used the OS hardening papers that Neal points to in the Flex forums to
shutdown, stop or simply remove ANY programs not needed to support my Flex
1500….it has been running freeze free since last December and blue screen free
since last October, knock on wood.

Sadly, I am going to have to face the music and build a Win7 machine, since
support for XP and likely SDR on XP will soon be going away.

best of luck, but my bet is on something annoying Windows/CPU

[Flexradio] BPSK split and up operation

2014-03-05 Thread dave dabay

I have been watching the 20 meter, digital, W1AW ops and think I have things
correct to work split and up a little while using digital mode BPSK31….

what I have done: normal ops work and have worked, so I select split, then AB,
then adjust the last 3 digits of the VFO B frequency - based on the desired
transmit freq….

and operate..

is that correct? is there a better way?

thanks in advance

[Flexradio] so impressed with my 1500

2012-02-11 Thread dave dabay
I have had so much fun with the 1500, I dug out my old cards and paper
logs and started to load them in to FLDIGI log to then upload to LoTW...

I find that while the log is great as you operate, not so much for
going back to 1991 and manually loading them in...

is there a better way? Logging app or program, or can you just create
an excel file and convert that to an adif?

Sorry to bother the list, but I am sure that I have at least a DXCC
out of this old information...

thanks in advance

[Flexradio] I see CQ in the waterfall

2012-01-24 Thread dave dabay

I have seen several stations calling CQ on BPSK31, and you can read
CQ on the waterfall prior to the signal...

How?

I have so much to learn. I got my 1550 late last summer and have just
scratched the surface on what the rig will do. This old dog has
learned rtty, BPSK, how to distinguish several other digital modes by
sound and water fall, fldig, VAC, VSPE, and of course PSDR.

I have cleaned up my PC so it works almost 100% and I have ordered a
second video card, so I can have fldigi, PSDR, and the logbook all
open and still see them.

Awesome rig, great, service, and wonderful people on this forum

thanks all around

[Flexradio] turboEncabulator interface

2011-12-04 Thread dave dabay
Have had my 1500 for several months, and today whilst playing with my
wife's ipod, I got a message from the PC to use the fast usb hub.
Having never seen this, I moved the ipod to the back USB ports and it
still worked...

I then thought about moving the Flex 1500 to that USB port, as it is
out of the way and should be faster.

When I did, I get a message about the TurboEncabulator Interface
installing

can someone point me to more info about this, as I did not find
anything in the manual

Thanks in advance

[Flexradio] great book on sun spots and solar flares

I recently read The Sun Kings by Stuart Clark, a great book that
describes the history of sun spots and solar flares and how they
affect the earth, at the time telegraphy, and electronics now.

Thought you may enjoy a history of what affects our radios .

[Flexradio] XP prep for Flex 1500

2011-09-08 Thread dave dabay

I am learning more and more every day...but now it would be great to
know what you all are doing to Win XP to make it more friendly to the
Flex...I have learned that the Flex does not like the power yanked out
from under it...new PS, now PS on a UPS (earthquake, hurricane, storms
fluter the power)...yesterday moved Win XP to a UPS..then last
night...stupid Win XP auto reboot over night due to updates
loaded...will reset updates to manual..

more things you all can suggest to minimize the disruption.

I like to leave the PC, Flex, PSDR, VSPmgr, fldigi running all the
time so I can drop in and listen at anytime..is that reasonable to
expect?

thanks

[Flexradio] SDR values lost on reboot.

2011-08-18 Thread dave dabay

New user, still learning...

I have noticed that my SDR config settings (especially virtual serial
ports) disappear upon on rebooting the computer, and I have to
uncheck, set port, and then recheck, apply.

I follow the manual on starting and stopping the SDR and the FLex
1500...

what am I missing, or please point me to the docs..

low cost desk mics that plug and play, or easily converted to the RJ
