Re: [Flexradio] Flex Communiity
Jack, You said it very well. I agree with you completely. I too have a Flex 3000 and until today I did not know there was another communication tool for Flex 3000 users. I heard there was another tool, forum, group, etc for "SmartSDR" users which did not apply to me. While YahooGroups is not perfect (Digest Mode is completely broken), it is superior to GoogleGroups and also provides a file storage mechanism unlike GoogleGroups. This current "mailman" like format seems just fine; why change? PUSH mechanisms, like email, keep people involved; PULL mechanisms, like web browsers, are best for reference purposes only. e.g. pointers to updates, fixes, third party products, etc. Roger WA1NVC Flex 3000 PowerSDR 2.7.2 > Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2014 17:13:49 -0700 > From: "Jack" > To: t...@flexradio.com > Cc: flexradio@flex-radio.biz > Subject: [Flexradio] Flex Community (was Re: Moving to the FLEX6300) > > Hi Tim, > > Thanks for following up on my email! > > According to my profile on the Flex Community website, I joined on June 30, > 2014. Re: [Flexradio] Game Changer Ahead!
Oh for heaven's sake. Give the company the benefit of the doubt. Instead of drenching yourself in bitterness, think of something positive. Like, it's great to own a radio, manufactured by a company, that gives you a "new" radio though upgrades and enhancements. And at NO charge. What a tremendous benefit. Re: [Flexradio] vac sample rate
I got Linrad working with the Flex5000 back in 2007 and made a webpage detailing how to do it at that time. It is really pretty simple, and is just as Clay describes: http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/flex-linrad.html I haven't played with it recently, and I didn't take the next step to make it work with MAP-65 as I have the Linrad Hardware [WSE boxes] that I use as my receiver for 2 meter EME. Don't forget that you need both H and V channels for MAP65 [but not for MAP65-iq]. Hope that helps, 73, W3SZ On 10/23/2010 3:02 PM, Clay W7CE wrote: On 10/23/2010 11:31 AM, Brian Lloyd wrote: On Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 11:09 AM, wrote: I need to have vac operate at 96000 with Flex. Flex only offers a max sample rate of 48000 from a drop down menu on main screen. Vac is capable of 96000. Sample rate is needed to send info to an eme decoding program which requires 96000. I talked to Greg at Dallas eme convention and introduced him to Joe Taylor the author of the program I am trying to use. Joe also wrote wsjt and WSPR program featured on the cover of this month's QST. Joe's program has been in use for years but so far I know of no one who has made it work with the Flex using vac even Gary KB8RQ who recenty tested the beta VU modules. Paul, wa3qpx Which program are you talking about? And why does it need a 96kHz sampling rate? EME stuff tends to be narrow bandwidth which favors low, not high, sampling rates. Both WSJT and WSPR work with PowerSDR (although it takes quite a bit to get WSPR to work with PowerSDR due to limitations within WSPR -- see http://flexradiowiki.com). Map65 is like CW Skimmer but for WSJT. It expects the data to be at a 96 kHz sample rate and once per minute it decodes all of the WSJT signals found in the bandpass. Much easier than trying to tune and find signals that you can't hear. If I'm not mistaken, Map65 receives it's data from Linrad which broadcasts the data over a TCP/IP port, so the real task at hand is getting Linrad working with the Flex 5000A. I did that once a long time ago, but don't recall all the details now. However, if I remember correctly, I was able to get Linrad to connect directly to the Flex 5000A I/Q data stream by selecting Flex Audio as the Linrad sound card. I know others have done this, so we just need to find someone who will share the details. After a few enjoyable weeks with my Flex3K and my desktop,I fancied using the F3K with my laptop. Its a Toshiba Satellite P100 running Vista Home Premium and has a 4 wire firewire socket. [Flexradio] Am I stuck now?
About a month ago, I purchased my Flex3000 from my supplier in the UK. After a few snags (mostly self-inflicted) I got it up and running. I have been happy so far and enjoy using it, until, reading thru the reflector, I see that it needs some factory-time for a mod to the pre-emp. I have been unable to discover if there are any arrangements in the UK as I dont really want to ship it to the States. It is running the supplied firmware 1.2.5.4 and the Flex driver 3.4.0.5254 Does this mean that without the Factory work, I shall be unable to use the new PSDR when it arrives? Should I update anything in view of the lack of a mod? and if so, what is my best course of action? It was a bit disappointing to buy it, then find out that it needs work. 73 Roger G0IUW ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Flexradio] transverter question
Gary et al, I use 70 microwatts from my flex 5000 [and my FT1000MP and my K3] to drive my transverters. Outputs measured multiple times with a couple of HP probes as well as a Boonton...all agree within a few percent. I know this well because I swap the rigs in and out and I always set the output to this level so I don't need to readjust all the transverters For those transverters that have taken more oomph, I use a MAR-x to boost the signal. This was sort of 'midrange' output for the 1000, which was the index rig here and so determined the 'standard' level. This is not the max that the 5000 will put out. But the points I am making are: [1] you don't need a lot of power out [use a MAR-x if its too low for your xvtrs] [2] the flex is not alone in terms of the level of its power out [3] 0.5 watts out is in my [limited] experience unusual for a transverter port on a modern rig. I'd suggest measuring what you actually get out of the flex with a good hp or boonton meter. I can't give more details at present as I am separated from my notes and equipment at present due to work demands. 73, Roger Rehr W3SZ On May 4, 2009, at 8:58 AM, Tim Ellison wrote: The XVTX output on the FLEX-5000 is rated to a max of 0 dBm (1.0 Mw) which could explain the low RF output from the transverter. Re: [Flexradio] My Flex History
I have been running an Intel Atom on the Intel motherboard D945CGLF2 plus 2 GB memory with PowerSDR and the HPSDR Mercury for a month or so. I realize this is not a perfect reference system for predicting performance with the Flex 5000, etc., since it is using the HPSDR Mercury hardware. However, I had been warned before getting the Atom that some users found it to be underpowered when running PowerSDR when using it with Flex hardware. This has been my experience as well, but with the HPSDR hardware. When running PowerSDR with the Atom and Mercury, using XP and NOT running a bunch of other processes, I have found that, for example, if I enable all three of NB, NB2, and NR that the audio begins to stutter. This occurs with sampling rates as low as 48 kHz; I haven't tried lower. This has been enough of a problem/concern that I have for now scuttled my original plans to run several satellites all using an Atom, and I am instead trialing some Core 2 Duo machines. I have previously run PowerSDR with no problem on > 3G P4s as well as with Core 2 Duo machines. I am currently running the same HPSDR Mercury hardware with PowerSDR on an old [i.e. slow] Core 2 Duo machine with NO problems. So if one is starting out wanting to make a dedicated machine, I would suggest avoiding what may be a borderline-adequate or inadequate processor/motherboard combination [the Intel Atom] and instead using something that 'should' work. Without doing any low price hunting you can put together a nice Core 2 Duo system for around $600 from NewEgg: Gigabyte 9500GT video card 59.99 Gigabyte EP45-UD3R mobo 114.99 4 GB Kingston memory 54.99 Sony DVD burner 26.99 Antec case 99.99 E8500 Intel 3.16 GHz core 2 duo CPU 189.99 750 GB WD SATA HD 59.99 add OS, monitor, mouse or trackball, keyboard... I am not recommending this as "the system" to get as I haven't trialed it yet [though I will put it online tonight if the case arrives today], but am merely using it as an example for a "price point" for the purposes of this discussion. While a Core 2 Duo system will cost slightly more initially, starting out with it will be cheaper than starting out with an Atom-based system and then needing to upgrade CPU and MOBO and case when the Atom is found to be not up to the task. Although it may be possible to 'tune' things for better performance than I have experienced with the Atom, I think that my experience and that of others suggests that the Atom is at best marginal, and would be better avoided when considering options for a system that is to run PowerSDR unless the buyer wants to tinker and doesn't mind the potential extra cost of a subsequent upgrade of CPU, mobo, case,... The last thing a new user wants is to find that his system becomes inadequate when he adds that 'next' application be it a digital mode application, a new logging/rig control program, whatever. If you have more $$ to burn, you could even go with a quad core. But I would avoid the Atom for this purpose...if you are going headless and using software with less 'overhead', then the Atom may work fine...but that is not what most folks will be doing. Those are just my 2 cents... Re: [Flexradio] Popping noise in headphones
I also have this problem on a 5000A, the headset is a Heil Traveller, this headset has worked fine with other brands of radio. I think I may have seen an earlier post where another user has seen the same problem and it turned out impedance related, it really is something that could do with a fix. Everything is running great except for a problem I have with my headphones. While listening with my Heil Proset Quiet Phones the audio sounds good in the left earphone but I get a rhythmic low-level popping in the right side. Is there some setting that I need to change? I bet that I am missing something simple but cannot find what it could be. BTW the phones work great when hooked up to a portable stereo. And I have the rear panel powered speaker/line out going to an external stereo receiver and that audio sounds good too. Any suggestions on what may be wrong would be greatly appreciated. [Flexradio] Com ports over ethernet and Flex5000
Hello all, I had previously mentioned the Advanced Virtual Com Port software as a potential way to control the Flex5000 by CAT over the ethernet. But I hadn't actually tried it at that time, as I made clear in my post. This evening while waiting for the EME contest to start, just to see if it would work, I downloaded the evaluation version of KernelPro Advanced Virtual Com Port and set up HRD on one computer with the AVCP 'server' and put the AVCP 'client' on another computer with my PowerSDR and Flex5000, and was able using the HRD SDR-1000 settings to control the Flex5000 satisfactorily over the ethernet with this virtual com port CAT control. [The 'server' and the 'client' are the same software, you just set it up to be 'server' on one end and 'client' on the other]. So if you want to CAT control your Flex5000 from a logging program running on another computer and don't have a com port free on your Flex5000 computer and don't want to go the USB/serial port route, this would be an alternative that does work and requires NO real com ports, although I don't like the pricing and therefore won't make this a permanent solution here. http://www.kernelpro.com/advanced-virtual-com-port.html You can try it for 15 days free. I don't know if there is a free or cheaper Windows product out there that also works over the internet like this. I have seen reference to a Linux product that is free, but I haven't tried it. PS. For some strange reason, Kenwood didn't leave room to send frequencies of 2304 MHz and up via CAT. Go Figure??!! Didn't they plan to offer rigs operating at 2.3 to 24 GHz and beyond??!! That being the case, CAT control won't be something I use with my particular application here. But if you stick to 1296 MHz and below, the above should work nicely. PPS No I did not test 50 MHz thru 24 GHz using HRD. For that I used RoverLog. 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] controlling Flex-5000C & logging on a second computer?
If you need a real com port on the 5000C and don't have one, you could also consider doing a com port over the ethernet. I have made use of Lantronix Network Serial Port Servers in the past at my station with good results. You would have the 5000C connected to your LAN and the Lantronix software installed on it and the Lantronix network serial port server also on the web. You would then connect to the Lantronix Server's serial port. I have used the following devices with good result: ETS8 ETS8P ETS16P http://www.lantronix.com/data-center-management/ethernet-terminal-servers/ets8ps-ets16ps.html http://www.lantronix.com/pdf/ETS8PS-16PS_PB.pdf You don't need so many ports, of course. My application was putting all antenna switches, rotors, rigs, keyers, etc. etc. on the network so that any antenna switch / rotor /rig/ keyer could be controlled from any computer position of a multiop station. So lots of ports were needed. These are available cheap on eBay and work quite well for me. I have found only 2 pieces of equipment that won't work with them [or with any USB-serial port adapters I've tried, either]: the infamously finicky FT1000MP and the K1EL WinKey, but Murphy's law says that someone out there will find that their gear just won't work. Caveat Emptor. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lantronix-ETS16P-Ethernet-Terminal-Network-Adapter_W0QQitemZ110196278109QQihZ001QQcategoryZ11175QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Lantronix makes a wide variety of servers, some with only one or two ports: http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/external-device-servers/ Check out all of the serial-to-ethernet External Device Servers listed on the left side of the above page. You can then go to eBay and find a bunch of Lantroinix serial-to-ethernet devices with just one or two ports, going for $75 or less on a good day. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lantronix-UDS-10-Device-Server-Serial-to-Ethernet-adapt_W0QQitemZ300174685203QQihZ020QQcategoryZ1484QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/LANTRONIX-COBOX-2-CHKPT-ETHERNET-NETWORK-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ300172496722QQihZ020QQcategoryZ48636QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem are just two I found in a second or two of looking. There are also purely software solutions that set you up to use, across the network, a serial port on another computer. I haven't tried these but you can download them to test. You would put the client on the 5000C and the server on the computer with the comport you are going to use. http://www.fabulatech.com/network-serial-port-kit.html http://www.advancedvirtualcomport.com/ I believe that you may even be able to use a Virtual com port over the ethernet with these solutions, but I haven't tried it. [Flexradio] Passport 2008
Hi, All, The postman brought me my Passport to World Band Radio 2008 today with the review of the Flex-5000A that Bob Sherwood mentioned. So seeing the numbers on his website shouldn't be too far off in the future. The review covered 3 pages, and addressed only the receiver, since PTWBR is an SWL offering. Overall score a very superior 4 and 3/4 out of 5 stars. Review indicated 5 stars might be assigned to a receiver-only version if offered in the future. The Flex-5000 was said to have "exceptional overall receiver performance." You can order PTWBR from http://www.passband.com/ I ordered mine on Sunday, 3 days ago, and it arrived today [Wednesday morning] ;) 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] XVRX Input Port on Flex-5000
Hi Eric, QSL. Sorry for spreading my wrong [read stupid] guess on 'filtering' on the list ;( I installed the new firmware that you sent me, that turned on the preamp for the transverter modes. Running 1.10.3 with that firmware removes the noise! Great call on your part!! I do not understand how this works, since some of the noise peaks were 35 dB above where the noise floor ends up with the preamp running. Maybe the preamp bandwidth is limited enough to act as a filter? Anyway, all's well that ends well. Thanks very much for the quick fix. I will add a picture of the beautiful result to the webpage, at the bottom [and remove my silly speculation on the 'lack of filters']. http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/flex5000-xvrx.htm is the webpage. -- 73, Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Quoting Eric Wachsmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Note that the XVTR inputs go through the same RX filters as the other > antenna inputs on the FLEX-5000. > > Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/
Re: [Flexradio] XVRX Input Port on Flex-5000
HI, Dale, Thanks for the note! Answers below: > Have you tried connecting a 50 Ohm terminated BNC plug directly to the > XVTX/COM and XVRX ports so that you don't have a piece of coax acting as > a possible antenna? Do you still see the noise? Is it real noise, or are > they spurs (does toggling 'SR' on PowerSDR change their position?) I am sorry that I was not clear on this point. The noise is only there if coax is connected. This is why I know that the source is external to the Flex5000 and why I believe a lack of bandpass filtering of the XVRX port explains the difference between the XVRX port and the other two ports. I never meant to imply that the signals were generated within the Flex5000. That is clearly not the case. The spurious signals ARE changed in frequency by toggling "SR" on and off. I have added appropriate images to my webpage showing this frequency change at the bottom of the webpage whose URL I previously posted. I have added a total of 4 images. These include PowerSDR images of the noise with SR on and off, and with the FT1000MP [whose antenna ports are connected to nothing except for a dummy load] on and off: http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/flex5000-xvrx.htm I got rid of another two spikes in the XVRX spectrum when I turned off the external Yaesu FP-29 switching power supply for the FT1000MP. Re: [Flexradio] Flex5000 XVTR use
Hi, Larry et al, 1. "Right out of the box" AMP RLY TX1 on the back of the Flex5000 will provide appropriate T/R control of your transverters when in transverter mode. The problem I have is that this continues to T/R switch the transverters even when I am on the HF bands and have TX1 [and TX2 and TX3] unchecked on the ANT page. 2. In CW mode with key down I get about 6 dBm [4mW] out of the XVTR/COM port at drive=100 level. I get about 2.4 dBm [1.72 mW] at drive=50 level [measured using HP 435A]. 3. FYI for those who asked the question: I have previously setup my receive chain so that my noise floor drops by 15 dB when I remove power to the tower-mounted preamps [97% of noise coming from antenna/tower-mounted-preamp]. When I have the transverters connected to XVRX I see 10 dB drop in the noise floor [-130 to -140] on the PowerSDR screen when I power off my 144 MHz transverter. When I connect the transverters to RX1 and power off my 144 MHz transverter I see 20 dB drop in noise floor [-120 to -140]. This reflects different 'front end gains' between the two Flex5000 ports. The tweaking of the receive chain gain was previously done using Linrad and the WSE hardware, to optimize the dynamic range vs sensitivity trade-offs for each band. 4. I DO NOT see any difference in receive signal levels between XVRX and XVTX/COM when 'split RF' is set properly on the XVTR setup page. This is as it should be. 5. All of the above pertains to SVN 1664, and most of it to 1.10.3 [I did not check #4 with 1.10.3]. Hope that helps, and 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Quoting Larry Johnston <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Hi Roger and all, > > My noise floor is about -124 dbm using the xvtr input. [Flexradio] XVRX Input Port on Flex-5000
Hi, All, I discovered a 'feature' of using the XVRX port that I at first thought was a software-signal-routing 'bug', which it is not. My station is VHF and up only, and is very heavily digitalized/computerized, with multiple concurrent pathways for RF and audio being used, all in the name of information control. It turns out that this is largely the root of the problem which I am about to describe. I discovered today that when I use XVRX as the receive input port to the Flex5000 from my transverters I get major digital noise that is the same across all 11 transverter bands from 50 MHZ thru 24 GHz, that I don't see if I use RX1-IN or ANT1 inputs for the transverters. If I uncheck 'Split RF' in the PowerSDR xvtr setup page and connect the receive cable to XVTX/COM, I get [of course] the same effect as if I was using 'split RF' and had the cable connected to XVRX: noise that is not present when ANT1 or RX1-IN is used. If I disconnect the coaxial cable bringing the transverter receive signal to the Flex5000 the noise disappears. I have found that much of the noise is coming from my SDR-IQ, which is also connected to the transverter line with a splitter, and is performing other necessary tasks for me. Not all of the 'extra' noise is removed when I disconnect the SDR-IQ. I suspect that the other noise is coming from other equipment in the environment and getting into my coaxial cable; it is unaffected by turning off the transverters. Some of it disappears when I turn off the FT1000MP [which is not connected to the coaxial cable], much of it remains. The difference between the results with XVRX and the other two input ports is in the bandpass filter on the RX1-IN and ANT1 inputs, I believe. In any event, the extra noise on the XVRX port [even without the SDR-IQ] reduces the utility of the transverter ports for me; I guess I will have to design/build a bandpass filter for the XVRX port before I can use it. To illustrate the problem, I have placed the info on a webpage at http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/flex5000-xvrx.htm that shows 4 appropriate screen grabs from PowerSDR: First, the PowerSDR screen with the 144 MHz transverter/Flex5000 receiving a 2 meter CW beacon at 144.285 using XVRX to receive the signal: Second, the Power SDR screen when feeding the same transverter signal in via the ANT1 port. Note the absence of the noise: Third, the PowerSDR screen when feeding the same transverter signal in via the RX1-IN port. Note the absence of the noise: Fourth, the PowerSDR screen when using the XVRX port but with the SDR-IQ disconnected from the splitter. Note that there is still quite a bit of noise that is not present when the ANT1 or RX1-IN ports are used. I hope that posting this will save someone else the trouble of chasing down the source of extra noise that he/she might see when using the XVRX port. If you have a noisy environment you may have trouble using the XVRX port without an external bandpass filter. You will need to save this email to retain the URL. It is not referenced anywhere on my website. 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

[Flexradio] Receiver Testing WAS [Flexradi0] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A
Hi, Richard, Let me begin by saying that I am not an engineer and not an electronically savvy person. So what I write below may be totally off-base. But I have been thinking about the limitations of the 'two tone tests' that are the basis for receiver performance measurement, now that we have two widely different receiver architectures, namely receivers with narrow 'roofing filters' on the one hand, and receivers where the front end is purposely kept wide to allow the acquisition of all-important band activity information [and do other cool things in the digital realm] on the other. The 'two tone tests' that are the basis for analysis of IMD and dynamic range of receivers have the advantage of being 'relatively' easy to perform [in comparison with what I am going to describe below]. I wonder if they are the ideal tests now that we are all using [and coveting] SDR receivers with 'wide-open' front ends by design, so that we can see the band activity and do all of the other 'cool' things the wide front end permits. I suspect that the two-tone tests may fail to show some differences between 'conventional' and 'wide-open' front-end receivers, and may fail to identify differences among different receivers in the 'wide-open' front end category. A test that might more accurately predict the performance of a receiver on 40 meters at night or during any contest weekend [and allow proper comparison of the performance of the two different receiver architectures] might consist of not two strong signals but 10 strong signals, centered around the frequency [signal] of interest, and spaced every 5 or 10 kHz, and all within the wide passband of the SDR receiver undergoing testing. One would then observe the effects of the strong signals on noise floor, signal-to-noise ratio of the desired signal, appearance of spurious responses, to name a few parameters. I am sure the engineers can think of more things to measure under such circumstances. I would think the results of such a test would be fascinating and enlightening. However, I guess the problem would be finding a laboratory that could perform the test. You could say, 'just put the receivers side by side and listen to both on 40 meters or during a contest' and that is true. But it would be nice if there were a test that actually tested that type of performance as a series of metrics that could be quantified and reported in a systematic way, rather than just reported in a qualitative way by an observer writing a review and noting that 'performance on 40 meters at night just didn't measure up to what we expected based on the lab measurements' or something similar. I would appreciate comment on this concept. It seems so obvious, and there are so many people much smarter than me working in this area, that I am sure I must be missing the boat somewhere since there seems to be no one doing this. If the problem were just difficulty in implementation, I know that some hams somewhere would have gone to the insane extreme of getting the 10 necessary low noise oscillators, high-IP3 combiners, etc. and have done the tests ;) 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Quoting Richard Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I believe there are significant misconceptions here that should be addressed > by someone closer to the Flex Radio product than myself. [Flexradio] Flex 5000 operation question PA on/off?
Hello, All, I got my Flex 5000 last week and have been having way too much fun ;) I have been having a ball but have one question I haven't been able to figure out [I had two questions, but I now know how to take off the side covers ;) ] I operate exclusively VHF and up [except for the past week, when I have been getting on HF just for the joy of using the 5000] and so I don't need the PA at all. For example, I have never had the PA of my old FT1000MP turned on except for the day I got it to make sure it worked, and once about a month ago after I repaired a bunch of rodent-induced damage, again to make sure it worked. I should say that I STILL keep a dummy load hooked up to the antenna ports on the FT1000 as I am somewhat compulsive when it comes to these things ;) So I would like, if it is possible, to disable the PA in the Flex 5000 so that I don't have to worry about frying it if I do something stupid like disconnecting it from a dummy load and accidentally transmitting on HF, e.g. operating it on an HF ham band at 3 a.m. during a contest when I think I am on 144 MHz doing EME, without a dummy load on the HF antenna port. If disabling the PA isn't easy to do, I can just hook dummy loads up to the 3 HF/6 meter ports and hope that I don't stupidly disconnect one of them and then commit a second stupidity by transmitting on an HF band assigned to that port, instead of transmitting on the band where I THINK I am. [If I can disable the PA then I would have to do 3 stupid things to fry it: re-enable it, transmit on the wrong band, and have disconnected the dummy load; that reduces the probability of error to even less than I am likely to commit.] Let me just say that I am EXTREMEMLY PLEASED with the 5000 and have had more fun with it in a week than with any other rig I have owned, going back to my 1st day as a Novice in 1968. And there have been QUITE A FEW rigs since then ;) Thanks, Guys!! 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

[Flexradio] Which Firewire card for Flex5000
Hi, I am anxiously awaiting my Flex-5000 and want to be ready with Firewire card installed in my Linux / Windows XP Dual boot PC. The Flex-Radio website says 'coming soon' for Flex-supplied Firewire solutions, but I want to be ready when the Flex-5000 arrives and so ideally I would like to have either: 1. the option of buying the card from Flex and having it shipped with the Flex-5000 or 2. the Firewire card already installed in the computer when the Flex-5000 arrives. Is there any chance of option #1? If not, what is the current recommendation for a good FIrewire card? Does the February 2007 knowledgebase article http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10250 apply here? Of the listed choices, is one preferred over the others? [Flexradio] transverter operation question
Hello, All, I have been using my SDR-1000 for weak signal VHF-and-up work. I want to use it also in the FM Simplex portions of some of the VHF-and-up bands. Because of the LO frequencies of my transverters, this will require that the SDR-1000 operate slightly out of the 28-30 MHz band. For example, for 146.58 MHz FM Simplex I will need to operate the SDR-1000 at 30.58 MHz. Will PowerSDR and the SDR1000 allow both transmit and receive on this frequency as long as I properly fill in the XVTR Setup Form to include LO offset 116 MHz and Begin Freq 144 and End Freq 148? I am asking this question on the list rather than just 'trying it' because my SDR-1000 and transverters are at a remote site and I may not be able to get out there for several weeks. Knowing the answer now will help my planning, so that I can be more productive when I actually DO get out to the remote site. Also, I will be interested in what the answer is for this question for the Flex-5000, as that should be arriving soon ;) Thanks in advance, and 73, W3SZ Roger Rehr http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz Roger Rehr W3SZ http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

[Flexradio] Multiple instances of PowerSDR, SO2R, UCB, etc.
Hi, all, After operating the VHF/Microwave contest all weekend I have some questions regarding the SDR-1000 and PowerSDR and how to best do SO2R with 2 SDR-1000s. I reviewed the flexradio archives before posting here. I would be doing this for VHF/Microwaves, and so I have an additional question about the "UCB" that I have seen mentioned and pictured on the flexradio website in the archives and possibly in a How-To as well [I don't remember]. Question 1. I want to have two SDR-1000/PowerSDRs on a single computer screen, each of which can operate independently. Can I run 2 instances of PowerSDR on one computer, each connected to its own SDR-1000 [or SDR-X :) ]? I would assume that with 2 USB ports and 2 Delta44 soundcards this would be possible. Is this correct? If this is not possible, then I guess I would need to network things. Question 2. Now that I have asked about 2 instances of PowerSDR and 2SDR-1000's on a single computer, how about 3 or 4 or more instances of PowerSDR, each with its own SDR-1000 [or SDR-X]? I would assume that I would want something akin to a Core 2 Duo or Extreme or Quad [Kentsfield] for a bunch of SDR-1000s, given the demands of the realtime displays. I have a couple of Core 2 Duos floating around the shack so this would not be a problem. But I am already networked, so if it were preferable to just have one SDR-1000 to a computer and network everything back to a single 'control computer' I could do this, as long as I could bring all the PowerSDR displays back to one computer with ALL display and control functions done by the operator using that one computer so the other computers could run remotely with no keyboards or screens. Question 3. In terms of the UCB [Universal Controller Board], does this exist as a board available for purchase or kit or finished product or set of plans or does each user roll his own? I know that on the reflector late last year it looked like it was going to be a group project, but then I never saw anything more after late October/early November. Perhaps I missed out on it by not paying attention... Question 4. In terms of SDR-1000 control, would it be possible to use a single Griffin PowerMate for all of the SDR-instances by having it automatically selected by ONLY the instance of PowerSDR that had 'focus'? Or would I need to clutter the desktop with as many Griffin PowerMates as I had instances of PowerSDR running [ugh]? Question 5. Directing receive audio from the multiple SDR-1000s would be no problem as I use an NCS Multi-Rx and would keep this [unless something appeared on the market that had computer control with a mixer icon in addition to manual switching]. Now I use an NCS Multi-Switcher to direct the microphone and key to the appropriate rig. But it would be nice if a single mic could be connected to one of the soundcards and then sent to whichever instance of PowerSDR had 'focus', or at least if the mic could be directed to the appropriate instance of PowerSDR via a mixer icon. Would something like this be possible? Or does it already exist? Question 6. I would like to have the 'receive frequency' information [e.g. 28.284.4 MHz] from PowerSDR available for use by other [homebrew] rig control programs. I send this data across the network, so what I really want is just a 'hook' to grab the receive frequency information from PowerSDR periodically. It doesn't matter to me if it exists in a file that PowerSDR is constantly updating which I can read, or via a DDE mechanism or whatever. Please note that the CAT commands and serial control are not what I want here. I just want a frequency 'number' that I can use as I please. What exists in this regard at this time? Any other thoughts/questions others have had would be most appreciated as there is nothing worse than getting a system set up and then discovering that something major was not considered and that everything needs to be redone as a result [ been there done that ;) ]. [Flexradio] Linux SDR TeamSpeak questions
Hi, All, I sent this to the linux-dttsp list and then realized that not everyone who was present for the EXCELLENT TeamSpeak last night is necessarily subscribed to the linux-dttsp list. I apologize for the redundancy for those who are subscribed to both lists. For those who asked me about [1] Linux SDR-1000 hardware control and [2] BeBob [FreeBob] on the TeamSpeak session last night [great session, guys...Thanks!] I note the following: 1. My dttsp webpage has information on using HamLib to control the SDR-1000. I am listening to the SDR-1000 as I type this, using HamLib to set the frequency and Preamp and attenuator levels. It works fine and the steps to using it are detailed at: http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/dttspw3sz.htm , item 16. Exact URL is: http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/dttspw3sz.htm#16 I have not tried to control transmit yet with HamLib. I haven't played with Frank and Bob's code since Thanksgiving. At that time it was not functioning properly for me, and I never heard about any subsequent updates. So I have stayed with HamLib as it works nicely with no need for 'fiddling'. 2. Last October I got my Firebox working under Linux with the SDR-1000 and SDR-Shell, gbeppe, etc by using BeBob variant FreeBob. This was not a simple task due to the fact that Ubuntu uses its own versions of many Linux Packages, and these versions did not satisfy the dependencies of other packages needed to run FreeBob. As of last October there were inkings of a version of jack that would contain FreeBob capability out of the box. I haven't looked into this here since I have been busy with work, and don't know what if anything has transpired in this regard. So my somewhat arduous 'formula' may be very much out of date at this point. But it worked for me, and I am listening to the SDR-1000 using SDR-Shell via the Firebox as I type this. My info is again on my webpage at: http://www.nitehawk.com/w3sz/dttspw3sz.htm , item 15.
