At the risk of offending, this is an old wives tale. SWR has nothing to do
with SWR in the shack and what Tim said, RF on the outside of the coax has
EVERYTHING to do with RF in the shack.

RF current on the outside of the coax can come from two places. It can be
conducted from the antenna or it can be picked up from being in the
near-field. A current/common-mode choke at the feed point of the antenna
will stop the former and current/common-mode chokes at the entry to the
building and again just before the equipment in the shack will take care of
near-field pick-up.

Well, if the balanced line is truly balanced, the fields from the
equal-but-opposite currents in the conductors will cancel out, eliminating
radiation and/or pick-up. But that still won't deal with common mode
currents and you still need the common-mode choke. It is just that building
a common mode choke for balanced line is MUCH more difficult than building
one for coax. In that case it is easier you put the common mode choke
between the tuner and the rest of the station.

BTW, you can also use a current choke/common-mode choke to turn an
unbalanced tuner into a balanced tuner. That is how I get my SGC-239 to
tune my loop without sending RF back down the outside of the coax to the
shack.

Tim,

I HAVE a granite firewire cable. As expensive as it was, it was one of the
first things I bought to fight the RF ingress battle. I have snap on Ferrites
on all of my leads on my computer and power supply for the Flex and it is
grounded.

After Christmas, I will be investing in some more RF ingress solutions.

That behavior is indicative of RF on the Firewire cable. There is too
much stray RFin the shack and it is taking a path to ground through your
computer to the AC safety ground via the Firewire cable. Ground your PC
and radio together with a low impedance ground strap and either (a) put
more ferrite beads on the Firewire cable or (b) get a Granite Digital
Firewire cable. These suggestion (other than grounding the PC and the
radio together) are Band-Aids to treat the RFI symptom not the cause.
Getting the RF out of the shack (common mode currents on the coax) is
fixing the root cause. This was just discussed in the thread "Equipment
grounding, static discharge and such..."

Stray RF in the shack can damage other equipment such as wireless
Internet routers. It may be unhealthy to the operator and be the
source of RFI to neighbors.
Here are some ways to stop Stray RF.
1. Use only balanced antenna with less than 1.5:1 SWR.
2. If you have to use an antenna tuner use ladder line.
Note: Even if the tuner reads a 1:1 match to the radio, the SWR and
thus the reflected power could be very high between the tuner and the
antenna. The reflected power can radiated in many undesirable
directions or just become heat in the tuner, feed line and any loading
coils in the antenna.

I had similar issues, and addressed them through a combination of feedline
chokes and microphone input filtration. I found that the mic input seemed to by
my biggest "entry point". I spoke to a number of people that couldn't use "pro"
condenser mics for this reason.

I reduced the mic input problem through chokes, grounding and attention to
potential "pin 1" problems. I do have to say that my 5K was the most
RFI-sensitive modern transceiver I ever used.

Good luck,

2012-12-22 Thread Dale Hankins
I have owned the Sdr 1000, two flex 3000's and the flex 5000 absolutely no RFI
running a alpha 8410 and several solid state kw amps and tentec 425 amp.
Inverted vs on 75,40,20,18,10 and log periodic .

I have computer and all items grounded at one spot to earth ground which was
checked with a meger.

I did have some issues with the DDR 1000's ,I had one of all three production
runs. But they were with the cables staying pluged in the back.

All in all I have been extremely happy with the lack of RFI. From what I have
heard on here the people who have had a lot of trouble also with regular radios.

supply and all other cables. I was asking about what products people using
to eliminate the common mode currents of my coax. As I am actively working

I may also have to rewire my microphone, I would like to have all of this

Then onto troubleshooting and fixing my Butternut HF9V. Right now I will

I had this problem when I first purchased my 5000A running more than about
50 watts.  It turned out that RF was getting into the firewire cable.

I put ferrite chokes on each end of the firewire cable (three loops through
the hole), no more problems, now I can even run the Alpha amp at full power
160m to 6m!  I also put one on the microphone cable just for extra
insurance.  Cost about $5 each.

The ferrite chokes I used are:

EMI/RFI Suppressors & Ferrites 257 OHM @100MHZ SPLIT FERRITE Mouser Part #:
807-BF2930 Manufacturer Part #:  BF2930

http://www.mouser.com, search on:  BF2930

Unfortunately this number is now obsolete so you will have to look for the
current version of the same thing.
http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/EMI-RFI-Components/EMI-RFI-Suppress
ors-Ferrites/

You might even be able salvage the RF chokes that come attached to some
computer cables at no cost.

are not very effective. I have been told to use a W2DU current UNUN from a
company like the wireman.

I am open to suggestions as I do not want this to be an extended engineering
science fair.

As this RF ingress issue has been a complete irritating experience with my
Flex, I would like to hear who has used what and what the results and over
all costs have been.

Thank you,

Robert

Did you read the article that Tim pointed you to? That is an excellent
article. If you want to purchase a good common-mode choke the one from DX
Engineering is pretty good. Model FCC050-H05-A. See:

http://www.dxengineering.com/search/product-line/dx-engineering-maxi-core-feedline-current-chokes

Of course, you can make your own. They are quite easy. You are just coiling
coax through the appropriate ferrite cores.

Here is the basic flow for an antenna system done right:

ANT---[cc]===[cc]-[LA]+=[cc]-rig
  |
ground

[cc] = current choke
[LA] = lightning arrester

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] Suggestions - EMI/RFI Suppressors & Ferrites

2012-12-22 Thread Robert Costa
Lloyd,

I have a granite firewire cable. I have ferrites on everything elsee. Power
supply and all other cables. I was asking about what products people using to
eliminate the common mode currents of my coax. As I am actively working on
getting this fixed, I hope to see if there was someone that had the same
problem as I have and what they did to resolve it. I do not want to reinvent
the wheel or have some long and drawn out science fair.

I may also have to rewire my microphone, I would like to have all of this work
completed soon.

Then onto troubleshooting and fixing my Butternut HF9V. Right now I will just
stick to fixing the common mode currents on my dipole. That has been a
experience trying to dial the Butternut antenna in also.

One challenge at a time.

EMI/RFI Suppressors & Ferrites 257 OHM @100MHZ SPLIT FERRITE
Mouser Part #:  807-BF2930
Manufacturer Part #:  BF2930

http://www.mouser.com, search on:  BF2930

Unfortunately this number is now obsolete so you will have to look for the
current version of the same thing.

You might even be able salvage the RF chokes that come attached to some
computer cables at no cost.

I had BAD issues on 17m and 75m, with my homemade OCF for 80 through 6m.

I put an Ugly Balun directly under the 4:1 Balun of the OCF and then placed a
Balun Designs 1:1 Max
Choke where the feed line enters the house and my office. The model is a
1115du. Handles 5kw.

Total cost? Less than 100$ and no more RF ingress.

I had the exact same problem with my Flex 5000 setup and had great success
with the T-4-500 line isolator from Radio Works. I'm using it with a
Butternut HF9V vertical. Everyone's RF situation is different so I can't
say for sure if it will fix your problem, but it made a night and day
difference for me.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] Suggestions

2012-12-22 Thread k4elo
Much cheaper to add your own rf choke at the antenna feedpoint - buy a
4" diameter plastic pitcher from Wally World ($1.97), cut off the
handle, drill 4 holes in the sides at each end, wrap the coax around the
pitcher for about 20 to 25 turns, not critical, and secure the coax to
the pitcher with ty wraps. This will eliminate the rf coming back down
the coax shield.

Had the same problem with my 5000 and that fixed it.
