This turned out to be an outdated document (Delta 44 Quick Start
Guide), and was updated yesterday to indicate using the MIC level
meter and NOT the ALC meter as did the old document. Thanks for all
the replies and tips however! I have no problem getting 0db with the
MIC level meter, but my audio is still too hot, so I am backing down
to about half of that.

Thanks,

Re: [Flexradio] Delta 44 & Audio settings in general

2006-05-24 Thread Tim Ellison
Something is definitely not right. Let's simplify things then get
complicated. First off, disconnect all outboard hardware.

Then set the TX meter to MIC and not ALC in PowerSDR.

Then plug the mic directly into the Firebox and while talking in a just
above normal voice, set the mic gain on the Firebox until you see the
clip light blink. Depending on the mic, you may need to speak loud to
get the Firebox preamp to clip. If you can't get it to clip, then add
the +12 dB boost on Mic1 from the Firebox control panel. Once you get
the pre amp to clip, then back it off a few notches.

Connect the rig to a dummy load and/or reduce the wattage to 1-2 watts
(to reduce QRM). Set the MIC gain to 5. Turn off the EQ, the COMP and
CPDR. Make sure that the TX filter in the TX profile is not set to some
ridiculously narrow setting.

Click on the MOX and while the TX is engaged and talking, increase the
MIC gain until your signal peaks at 0dB.

Then turn up the wattage to 100 watts and see what you get out using a
peak reading external meter. If it is not peaking reading, you will
only see about 15-30 watts output max.

If you can't get any output that provides 0 dB on the MIC TX meter, then
the next place to start looking is at the cables between the Firebox and
the SDR1K. Are you using the Hosa cables?

Are you using the 6-pin-to-6pin Firewire cable to get power to the
Firebox or the wall wart?

I would get this configuration working and then start adding your
outboard hardware one piece at a time. Remember if you outboard
hardware is line level out, then the input to the Firebox would be line
level in (TRS not XLR)

Brian,
My ALC Meter never makes it to zero. Normal voice peaks are in the -9.0
db range. I'm using the Presonus Firebox. I can "ah it" to about -7.0
db. Monitoring Output Power my meter never goes over 50 watts on the
radio but the peak reading external watt meter says the radio is making
about 100 watts or so. Listening to you last night you were very hot to
begin with. I am running the k6jca svn 473 software, leveler enabled and
the settings are stock.10db, 2ms, 500ms, 500ms. My gear before the
mic is all Beringer.. Ultra Gain ,Ultra Voice , Feedback Destroyer,
Ultra Q, Ultra Flex, Composer and Vitualizer.
Nice to met you and hope you get it worked out.

Re: [Flexradio] Delta 44 & Audio settings in general

2006-05-24 Thread Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio
Brian,

Changes surrounding the TX Meter selections have caused some confusion
here. The OLD ALC setting (1.4.x and before) is now the MIC setting.
It was a tap at the beginning of the DSP chain and had nothing to do
with ALC. The NEW ALC setting is a tap at the end of the DSP chain just
following the ALC and will give readings that reflect everything before
it (such as the compressor, compander, EQ, etc).

The correct procedure for calibrating the microphone input on the
current software is to use the MIC setting on the TX Meter and target
0dB on peaks. This needs to be reflected in all our documentation.
Please let me know if you find places other than the Delta 44 QSG where
other methods are mentioned.

Eric,

Not the mic meter. The ALC meter. Please re-read my original
message. It refers to the Delta 44 "Quick Start Guide" on your
website which states to speak into the mic and adjust the _ALC_ level
until 0db is reached. I have no problem getting 0db on mic level, but
no way can I get 0db on the ALC meter. if this is inccorect, then
maybe someone should edit the D-44 document.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: [Flexradio] Delta 44 & Audio settings in general

2006-05-24 Thread Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio
Brian,

The MIC meter is before the compressor and the compander in the TX DSP
chain. So having these on or not should not affect the input
calibration procedure. Make sure that you are using the MIC selection
on the meter though and not one of the other selections that are later
in the DSP chain. If you are unable to get to 0dB in the MIC meter,
then you may need a microphone preamp.
