[Flexradio] 160 preamp

2008-09-09 Thread Trevor Smithers
Have just upgraded my 5000 to the latest drivers and 1.14.0 and all appears to
be well.
However I see in the release notes
Fixed a bug where the FLEX-5000 preamp would not behave properly below 2 MHz

Is there still a problem with the preamp on 160 - its still not available below
2 MHz
hereor have I missed something in the setup somewhere.

Flex 5000
PSDR 1.14.0
FW driver 3.2.0.1556
Firmware 1.2.1.10

2008-09-09 Thread Dale Boresz
Hello Trevor,

The internal preamp in the FLEX-5000 begins to roll off below 3.5 MHz,
so it doesn't have much gain at 160 meters. I've been experimenting with
small receiving loops on 80m and 40m and of course the preamp works fine
in both instances, but I also plan to build a loop for 160m, and will
build an external stand-alone preamp which will be placed into the RX1-
In/Out loop along with the loop itself. The RX loop is very convenient
since the T/R switching is handled for you, and you won't have to be
concerned about further protecting an external preamp.

Re: [Flexradio] 160 preamp

2008-09-09 Thread Trevor Smithers
Hi Dale,
Totally agree about using separate rx antennas on the low bands - I've been
using
Wellbrook loops for a number of years and find them extremely effective.

However my point about the preamp is that as soon as I switch to 160 the button
is
greyed out and only becomes available again if I tune above 2 MHz and according
to the
release notes this behaviour has been fixed in the latest release.

So I'm wondering if its just me or is everyone else seeing the same thing

Trevor, that is and has always been the intended behavior to turn off the
preamp below 2 MHz and not make it available (grayed out). There was a bug
that allowed you to turn the preamp on below 2 MHz and that is the bug that was
fixed.

I like Dale's idea of a separate preamp in the Rx1 in/out line but I already
have the much needed 6M preamp in that line.

Re: [Flexradio] 160 preamp

2007-11-04 Thread Tim Ellison
David,

The preamp has a fairly steep roll off before the 160 meter band. During beta
testing, we found using the preamp on 160 actually made reception worse. This
is why you can not select the preamp for 160 meters. Gerald can give you a
better technical answer than I on exactly what the characteristics of the
preamp are.

160 Receive Pre-amp - I wish to have the option to switch the receive pre-amp
on on 160 at the moment this is grayed out.

There is a big difference in receiving low signals if the pre-amp is enabled.

The noise floor using 250mtr beverages is -100dbm 2.001khz without the pre-amp.
With the pre-amp enabled this drops to -112dbm.

Very low signals which are totaly unreadable become Q5 and workable - I have
made the same tests on 80m and the results are the same.

Has anyone else experienced this situation? if so is there a fix? how easy is
it to change the software? - Dudley I have also emailed you directly on this
ongoing problem. G3RCQ
