Jim, thanks for the good detailed actionable information. I’m a newbie on much
of this and it may take me a while to get comfortable and longer to get
knowledgeable. I may be slow but I’m not stopped!

Thanks again,

Patrick,
I found that DDutil supports the Flex Knob even better than PowerSDR does. It
gives more control options, expecially some I wanted. In addition, since I
have a little VB script to start everything in order and delay starts by a few
seconds, DDutil brings up the Knob after PSDR is up and running.
I'm going to guess that you're having a problem with Windows trying to
re-assign COM ports on you. It does that, and I don't like it. If PSDR has
assigned the Knob to COM 5, and Windows decides to reassign something to COM 5,
then PSDR will not be happy at all. I forced the Knob COM assignment to where
I wanted it to go by opening Control Panel, Device Manager, Ports(COM &LPT),
and then choosing FlexControl USB Control Knob. From here, I went to the Port
Settings tab, and clicked Advanced. The Port Setting is at the bottom left of
Advanced. I used COM 7, which is over any other physical serial ports.

Re: [Flexradio] FlexControl install issues

2012-06-06 Thread Patrick Greenlee
I now have the FlexControl installed (automatically as advertised in
instructions.) I shut down PSD and restarted it. It came up in "NORMAL"
mode vice the 9 bit noisy weird inop mode and the Flexcontrol installed
first try, no problems.

Apparently (well, at least it seems like there may be) a "race" condition, a
non deterministic situation in the software (or combined system) where
things can sometimes get off to a bad start. Most of the time my lashup of
radio, computer, and software starts up fine but a couple times it has had a
"bad" start and the display depicts a string of 9 bit words and the sound
they make does not soothe the savage breast.

There appears to be a certain random element in the startup. Once started
properly, ops normal continues ad infinitum (or at least hours) with no
apparent problems. If on the other hand there is a bad start (receiver
displays the above described "stuff" and makes rude noises) it will not
receive a normal signal, won't install FlexControl, and won't heal itself
(restart is needed.)

Finding the source of the problem could easily cost more in time and
resources than it is worth, especially considering the alternative is to
live with it and once in a while have to start the system up twice to get it
going properly. This software is not simple.

I just ran into the same thing. Try running the Flexcontrolinstall.bat
file that is in the 64 bit driver directory.

edits downpage.

If you look in C:\Program Files
(X86)\FlexRadio\PowerSDRv2.1.x\FlexControlyy you will find more of the
path name mentioned in the FlexControl instructions but looking where told
doesn't work.

Rest of message should be pertinent.

My new Flex-Control has arrived and I tried to install it on my new Flex
5000 under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I tried to follow the included instructions with blind obedience so as to
not wander off the straight and narrow but no joy, I got the message
predicted by the instruction sheet, "Installing New Driver." And then
while

expecting to see the message, "Flex Control driver is successfully
installed" and "The device is ready for use" I instead was told there was
an

error, the driver was not installed. I tried again but using the same USB
port did not trigger the attempt to install the driver. I plugged the Flex
Control into another USB port and got the same results as above, a swing
and

a miss, repeated for some other USB ports. No joy.

The instructions state that "If there is ever a need to manually tell
windows where to find the driver files, tell Windows that the drivers are
in:
C:\Program Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDRv2.1.x\FlexControlyy where x is
the dot release and yy is 32 or 64 (bits of OS)

The path name given does not exist within my PowerSDR installation. There
is a C:\Program Files\FlexRadio\"BlahBlahBlah" where there are 7 choices
for Blah etc.

PowerSDR installed OK or so it seemed as the radio worked and I copied
WWV,

some SSB and CW sigs. Now I get a strong series of apparent 9 bit digital
words (all ones) repeated over and over and over on all bands Loud and
obnoxious).

Any ideas? Is there a way to manually install the driver(s) for the
FlexControl under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit? Is there a simple way to
"reset" the USB ports (restore their virginity as regards FlexControl
insertion so the system will try again to install the drivers?

So far it is a cool looking
accessory with three lights, three buttons, and a knob but, of course, no
function.

Tia for any assistance,

73 Patrick AF5CK
