[Flexradio] Fwd: PowerSDR freezing

2014-07-15 Thread Craig Hayhow
Thanks for the replies, still having no luck finding a solution.

NOTE:- cable and fire wire card is tested OK.
I managed to delete my early restore points.
Freezes in RX mode, no stray RF issues.
DAVE:- I ran a program called Memtest and all tests passed 100%
Les:- Freezing occurs with VAC either on or off
I have run all the Windows tests and every thing passes
Tried to install Hotfix Fix319514 and it says it is not for my computer.
ERNEST: - I checked and found I have an Interrupt request (IRQ) conflict.

IRQ 16 - 1304 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)
 IRQ 16 - Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root
Port 1 - 1C10
 IRQ 16 - Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) Processor Family
PCI Express Root Port - 0101

I don't believe I can change the IRQ in Windows 7 as they are automatically
generated?

I have been working on this problem for several weeks now and I hope some
one out there can help me with a solution.

My radio is a F5k and it works perfect on my i5/W7/64 bit laptop using a
SIIG Firewire 400 2-Port (6-pin) ExpressCard so my radio and fire wire
 cable test OK.

My radio has worked perfect on my home PC for several years but some thing
has changed or it has developed a fault and now PowerSDR will freeze
randomly any where from a few seconds to a few hours. Some times the
panadapter will freeze and the audio will stop and turning off and on
PowerSDR
will solve the issue. Some times turning off and on PowerSDR will grey out
the panadapter and some times turning off PowerSDR will generate an error
message Unhandled exception has occurred in your application and
PowerSDR
will crash requiring both the F5k and PowerSDR to be turned off and on
 again.

I have tried all the things Flex recommend such as disabling power
savings,
using the legacy driver, factory defaults, reloading PowerSDR, no over
clocking etc etc and nothing changes.

I replaced the SIIG FireWire 400 2-Port PCIe card in my PC with a spare
SIIG FireWire 400 3-Port PCI card (in a different slot) and I still have
the exact same problem, so the problem is not the fire wire card either.
The problem is a software problem in my PC. My PC is a high performance
machine purchased specifically to run my F5k and I should not be having
any
issues. I have tried using different drivers for the FireWire cards and
the
 problem still remains.

 System details are;

 PowerSDR v2.7.2
 Max DPS ~ 190 us
 Safe mode 1
 Sampling rate 96000 Hz
 Buffer size 2048

Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHz (BIOS up to date)
 RAM 16 GB
SIIG FireWire 400 2-Port PCIe card and high quality cable (worked perfect
 for several years)
SIIG FireWire 400 3-Port PCI card and high quality cable (Made no
 difference, problem still occurs)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (All updates complete)

 Any help appreciated,

 Craig

2014-07-15 Thread Rich - W3ZJ
Your problem really sounds likd a bad Firewire cable. What test did you
perform that makes you think it's OK? If you are referring to the LED
inside your radio box all that verifies is that the wire carrying power
is connected and working, it doesn't verify communication.

By the way you can change the IRQ in Windows 7 or any version of Windows
by plugging your card into a different slot Most mother boards have one
slot that does not share it's IRQ. Some mother boards may indicate that
by using a different color connector. Mine doesn't. I just had to play
musical slots until I found it and it turned out to be the one at the
very bottom of my case.

Hello Craig,

*Some times randomly I hear the same sound as pulling out a USB memory

settings display will go blank, freeze or the DPC counter will stop

I had this with my 3000 you'd hear the bing-bong of a device disconnection
and it would hang, it was my cable. I changed the one it came with for another
and never had a problem until it was sold for a 6300.

Mine had been to Flex in Germany for a repair - they changed some components to
do with the FW port. I assume this to be a common issue as they'd seen it
before.

The lead has probably caused issues internally before the unit required service.

Craig

A couple of thoughts that I am sure that have been mentioned before. Some
good people have come up with some good ideas. I'm sure that Neal will
also recommend the following as we happen to think alike.

The radio works on another computer, so that totally eliminates the radio
and the associated cables (assuming you used the same firewire cable).

Sadly, you don't have any restore points to go back to, so that would be my
next suggestion.

As you are finding out, Windows is very hard to diagnose problems like
this. You can look at the event viewer (I don't thin anyone mentioned that
so far) and see what happens just before PSDR freezes. That might give a
clue and I would look in the video card area.

Software doesn't expires or where out, so that leaves ... something in the
system changed in the software. It could be a windows update, so other
software got installed or something damaged the firewire card. It could
also be a memory issue, but not likely.

Here are your options based on facts

   - Change the firewire card to another vendor
   - Update your video card driver -PowerSDR is very powerful user of the
   video system
   - Investigate the event viewer and see whats up and what happened
   - See what was installed in the last weeks leading up to the failure
   - Reinstall Windows from scratch - this will have a 95% success rate of
fixing things - if not, then it 100% a hardware issue
   - Spend $350 on a new computer. Yes, the may come with Windows 8.1, but
that isn't a big issue (speaking from experience and watching an 8 minute
video on how to actually used Metro. :) ) -- this has a 95% success rate
too -- assuming you can get it to support a firewire card
   - Upgrade to a Flex 6300 (that is what I did)

2014-07-15 Thread Craig Hayhow
Hi Rich,

My fire wire cable is fine. It has worked fine for 3 years and I tested it
on my laptop for several days continuously without any freezing.
The only IRQ I can manually change is on the comm port. I will try moving
the SIIG FireWire 400 3-Port PCI card into another slot and see if it
gets allocated an IRQ on its own. I was originally using a SIIG FireWire
400 2-Port PCIe card and this worked perfect for several years - so only
the software has changed???

Regards,

Craig

Hi Steve,

Well a Fire Wire cable is relatively cheap, so I will purchase a new high
quality cable and see if that makes a difference as I have nothing to loose.

Well maybe $35.00 to lose but I think it's worth a try :-) My factory
cable worked fine for the first month, then it became intermittent and
finally quit all together. I bought a Gigabit cable from Radio Shack
transferred the ferrite beads from the old cable and it has been fine
for several years now. I have the same SIIG 3 port PCI board that you have.

2014-07-15 Thread Craig Hayhow
Hi Mike,

I went away for a year and over that time changes have been made to the
computer (Windows updates etc) and when I came home, PowerSDR now freezes
randomly. I can try upgrading the video card driver.
I have been looking at event viewer but I don't really know where to look
and what to look for?
I ran Memcheck and the memory checked out fine.
I replaced the fire wire card (in another slot) with another I bought from
Flex and the same fault still exists.
I don't have the disks to reinstall Windows from scratch or I would if I
knew how.
The computer cost me $1800 so I'm not about to toss it out yet (Computers
are expensive in Australia)
Yes I would love to upgrade to a Flex 6300, but my F5k cost me over
AUD$5000, so I am not considering retiring it just yet.
Hopefully soon I will stumble across the problem and get back on air.

Regards,

Craig

Craig, I am experiencing the same issue. It is a MS update that is causing
the 5K to freeze. I have not found a solution either at this point except
maybe rebuilding my PC which is a real PIA. Good luck on your end.
