Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun
Steve, Nice looking pic! I bought a 3000 and really liked it. Had issues with the newer Power SDR (Beta 2.0) that just kicked my butt, but that's old news. Having said that I liked the SDR concept so much I've upgraded to the 5000 over a year ago. I can't say ANYTHING negative about it. My best friend who is an engineer, also owns a 5000, told me some interesting facts about the radio. Sherwood Labs has the 5000 as one of the top tiered radios for RX. But when you read the notes about the radios, the flex beats out the rest of the crowd! It IS the best sounding radio on both RX and TX I have ever owned! By the way I use a two monitor system here also. I use two 23 inch 1080p monitors here. I had issues with the no "knob" configuration but quickly overcame that! I saved the QST that had the FT-5000 review. The author had a sidebar that said "it would be nice to be able to click on a signal and QSY" (not exact). I thought, dude get a FLEX! One of the reasons I bought the 5000 is the ability to configure your system. 3000 is nice, but it is what it is, nice entry into SDR for sure. I'm in the process of upgrading my antenna system and shack. Pics to follow in a few months. Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun
Gentlemen, This is not a unique experience. I have been called a "CB" operator, LID, etc. and my mother's reputation and my privates have been called into question! I find this reaction to be downright common and I no longer routinely discuss Flex or SDR on the air unless I know that the other person either has such equipment or knows about it. Since I have some ideas about how my SDR radios can be used in serious emergency situations as well as for pure pleasure this is a great disappointment to me. 73 Lee K9WRU - Original Message - From: "Bill Marvin" To: "'Steve Weinert'" ; Sent: Sunday, November 27, 2011 9:01 AM Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Three Years of Fun Hi Steve. My first PC for the Flex-5000a wasn't much good because I ignored the recommendations and basically did a poor job of preparing for the SDR software and Firewire needs. Once I assembled an appropriate setup all was well. During the time I have had the radio I have lost track of the number of software updates and added features. Each new arrival has been a treat. I've had a blast using the radio from Topband to 6m, mostly SSB with a fair bit of digital. Have met some of the nicest people in fellow Flex owners and the Flex staff. Even though the radio really doesn't need it, I egged myself on to whip up a Rb-Frequency Source with help from a Flex-Radio volunteer. I've slowly expanded the capabilities of the software running, and my skill in using the programs. You can see my two monitor setup at QRZ or my web blog & website. It has been like having a wonderful self-upgrading radio - and lots of fun! None of the other radios or gear that I have had have been this much fun! And did you break in to tell him that your Flex has every bit as many knobs as his ricebox? The only thing is, they require more work to get to with a mouse so you have to do more work to nail those contacts! And if we are talking fanboi status, I have: 1. Flex 5000a + RX2 + ATU (I have had it since just before RX2 came out) 2. Flex 3000 3. Flex 1500 4. Dedicated computer built to Official Neal Campbell specs. The only appliance I have without knobs is the Kinect for my Xbox 360, I wave my hands and talk to it. On 11/27/2011 9:01 AM, Bill Marvin wrote: Hi Steve. Good stuff!
