You have a way with words.
Add to that in contesting all reports are 59
In DXing occasionally the truth is told and even more occasionlly in DXing hams
actually talk to each other
There was a woman on a QRZ forum who said her Sunday was screwed for contesting
because family was visiting
How messed up is that?

I am with you! There is so much difference between DX and contesting. In
the case of DX you have a million guys piled up calling one guy and with
contesting you have a million guys piled up calling each other. No
similarity at all. And of course they will have even less similarity on 60m
when everyone is using fixed 2.7kHz-wide channels.

And rightly so. This allocation wasn't designed to be a "contest"
segment. We are also secondary users and not primary users and, I
believe, the only country to have 60 meters.

Re: [Flexradio] New freq, new modes, new power for 60 Meters

2011-11-21 Thread Tom Peterson
No flames from me, I enjoy contesting myself. I also enjoy using a
straight key, running digital modes and the occasional ragchew. The
joy in ham radio is finding what interests you, not what others do that
annoys you.

Just to address a couple things I've seen posted in relation to the 60M
band. No, we aren't the only ones with access. For the list, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60-meter_band#Other_countries

Yes, we are secondary users on the band. Without looking it up, I
believe that we are also secondary users on the 1.25M and 70CM bands as
well and that hasn't prevented contesting in those bands. There is
plenty of contest free spectrum other than 60M. 30M, 17M, 12M all
provide a nice place to play when the contests are running. 12M was
lousy with DX this last weekend.

I'd much rather deal with a weekend full of contesters, than trying to
find spectrum that isn't inhabited around the clock with the 'Fine
Business Old Man, How's Your Prostate?' nets.

Outside of ham radio, I don't think I've known a more inflexible segment
of humanity.

No. We have to wait thirty days from when it is published in the Federal
Register, not 30 days from when the FCC issued the Report and Order.
While the FCC issued the Report & Order on the 16th of November, it has not
been published in the Federal register.
The Federal register can be found at:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/browse/collection.action?collectionCode=FR

Please do not jump the gun, as it may not be fun.

Is this true we have to wait until 30 days from 11-16-2011 to operate
digital modes on 60 meters?

A.change is afoot! Still, phone only until 30 days after the
change is published in the Federal Register. Sounds like a few folks are
jumping the gun and liable to get a Christmas card from the FCC.

Apparently our parents at Flex have disabled DigiU on 60 meters.
But it only kicks in after 2 minutes or so of transmitting before it
realizes and chastises you. Have to break out the Yaesu for now.
