The manual contains some very important information. I will try my very
best. The missing numbers I will guess. Do you have information about
the exact gear ratio from main to tail rotor?

Best regards,
Maik

Hello, Maik

thanks for your offer .

I will look for data (if i have) in my documentation.

However, here is a good manual, (mainly for maintenance actions :) )
http://newsite.ipmssa.za.org/content/view/254/28/

page 3 and 4 you will find some information about rotors.

It is the Sikorsky not the Westland which was a little different (engine
power, and may be the shape of the main rotor, i must check it)

But these data could be used for the FDM.

Cheers

Hello Maik,

first I want to excuse for misspelling your name in my last post - 02:39 am!
Then I want to thank you in advance for helping Gérard - I think this
ancestor of modern helos is a very nice contribution to our FlightGear
helicopter hangar!

Regards
Georg

Hi Gérard,

very nice work. I will do what I can to assist you with the FDM. I found
information about the airfoils, but not much more. If you have any
information about the rotor (geometry, weight, rpm, cyclic and
collective incidence, c.g. of the blades, what ever ...) and the
fuselage (position of the c.g., inertia tensor): please let me know.

Best regards,
Maik

Thanks, AJ and Georg.

Georg you are right,
The main rotor was 14.63 meter diameter and tail rotor 2.50 with both a big
mass and probably an airfoil with low performances.
Referring to the French version (was built under US license by Westland) :
the helo empty weight was 1994 kg and maximum take off 2675 kg
the engine power was only 520 ch.
the maximum speed was 82 knt (153 km/h)
Blades big mass + underpowered + weight => gave reactions delayed and
difficult to fly when the conditions where bad.

In order to use it,
i first started from the bo105 FDM (every rotor spec and size are coming from
it),
i gave the s-51 engine power the s-51 helo weight/mass , contact points and
mass positions.
Everything must be done about the rotor .

Sure Maik would be the best expert :)

Cheers

Hi Gérard,

first thank you very much for this very beautifully historical
helicopter model. And for the really interesting links to get more
informed about the original helicopter and all the stories about.

Although you write "is missing a lot of details" the outside model is
already very nice to look at. Of course, instruments are now missing at
this stage of development but - please forgive me these words, you
already mentioned that it is still missing the right FDM - what is
more important is the "tuning" of the flightmodel. It is just an idea,
but at these days the rotor was fully articulated and the rotorblades
had a big mass. So the reaction to control-inputs should be a little
delayed and somehow more "damped".
Might be Mike Justus could help you a little with this special part? I
hope so, this helicopter deserves it.

Anyhow, it is a big fun to have this helo available :-)

Regards
Georg EDDW

[Flightgear-devel] Helicopter S-51 Dragonfly

2007-10-09 Thread g.robin

Hello,

If you are interested on it:
I have added to my hangar, the helicopter naval rescue S-51 Dragonfly. which
suit to the French carrier Arromanches.

http://perso.orange.fr/GRTux/S-51-img2.jpg

It was the FIRST HELICOPTER NAVAL RESCUE
http://www.sikorskyarchives.com/fhr.html

AND remember the movie “Bridges at Toko-Ri” (an old great movie)
You may find here 3 pictures from that movie.
http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/AC/aircraft/Sikorsky-S51/S-51.php
(later on, i will give it the US livery and the pilot with his green hat)

Today the model is missing a lot of details, the panel with instruments, and
the right FDM.

the model can be found there, http://perso.orange.fr/GRTux/tux/index-en.html
