FLUXLIST: 20th Oscar Signorini to Caterina Davinio
PRESS RELEASE 20th Oscar Signorini Prize / D'Ars Art Journal Artist: CATERINA DAVINIO Solo Exhibition: Serial Phenomenologies. Digital video, computer printings, net.art. No-Stop PERFORMANCE AND POETRY EVENT For Davinio's net-project GATES, invited in the next Paris Biennial 04, since 5:30 PM, until 9:00 PM, poetry readings and performance. Opening: December 18 2003 5:30 PM Prize-Giving: December 18 2003 7:00 PM Where: Studio D'Ars Via Sant'Agnese 12/8 - Milan. Ph. 02 860290 Exhibition since December 18 2003, until January 12 2004 (closed December 25-26-31, January 1). 20th Oscar Signorini Prize 2003 to Caterina Davinio, for her work as an artist and critic in electronic art and writings. The exhibition Serial Phenomenologies, at D'Ars Studio in Milan, presents 15 computer printings of some recent digital images, signed by the artist, a selection of video works and computer art, and her collaborative art project in network GATES, which involves Italian and international artists. The exhibition focuses on possibility of serial production of identical copies of the electronic image, conjugated with the unique dimension of poetry. Every image is a small poem, which, by utilizing minimal elements, finds the moment of game, wander of poetry, together with the visual materiality of the pixel, which leaves a trace in video and in some computer printings of the artist. During the opening will be created a performance/poetry event related to the net-art project GATES. In course since July 4 2003, GATES, planetary collaborative event in network, continues the experience of similar well known net-projects by Caterina Davinio (Paint From Nature, Global Poetry, in 2002, and others), where the artist experiments a collective performance decentralized in numerous spaces in the world, coordinated trough the Internet; a new art form that uses as matter electronic communication, art debate (without distinction between art and critic), body and gesture in the virtual extensions which make possible to explore hypothesis of ubiquity. Gates has seen the collaboration of many artists from all over the world (see the list in the official web site - under construction GATES 2, dead line December 31 - following the link below); international artists realized in their countries installations in form of door, and under/around the doors have created events and performances, in Belgium, Lebanon, Chile, Amazzonia, USA, Greece, United Kingdom, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Venezuela, circulated in the network as digital documents. Gates as ways of transit, as dimension of open, passage in every direction, with every symbolic, of computer science, telematic implication, the idea of gate has in itself. In polemic with net.art as interactive game on line, Caterina Davinio, one of the pioneers of Italian digital poetry (since 1990), has gradually made her net.art works less virtual, increasing the dynamic relationship with the real. The Italian node of GATES will be at D'Ars Studio during the opening of Serial Phenomenologies solo exhibition, on December 18. For GATES in Italy: poetry readings and performances since 6:00 PM until 9:PM. Space given to well known poets from Milan, to emerging artists and poets. The GATES project has officially been invited to participate in the next Biennal de Paris 2004. Davinio's exhibition in Milan is organized and curated by Grazia Chiesa and Silvia Venuti, D'Ars space, with a special report on the review D'Ars. GATES is dedicated to Pierre Restany. To know more about GATES, how to join: http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/davinio/GATES/gatesindex.htm (For Internet Explorer 6) Caterina Davinio, techno-artist, writer, uses new media in art and poetry since 1990. Her work, developed during the 90s, focuses in a non conventional way on video, computer art, experimentation between Internet art and performance. It has received prizes, and been shown in more than 80 exhibitions in Europe, USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Russia, and in other countries. The research in critical and curatorial field is synthesized in the essay Techno-Poetry and Virtual Reality, published by Sometti with the support of Mantoa Municipality (I) in year 2002. Among her publications: articles, poems and creative works in international magazines and journals of the avant-garde, the novel Color color (Campanotto, 1998). Her web site Karenina.it (Award MAD Festival 2003 NET_ZIN, Madrid), created in 1998, the first Italian site of experimental art/poetry on line, is an open planetary referring point for the avant-garde.

Re: FLUXLIST: bon man's rainbow academy
Hi, our last message was private for Alan, sent from an Internet point in Paris, were we were for work, trying to download the daily 250 messages from this office account, so it was not directed to the list, it was my error. We are back today working at office on Sunday night to download and answer to everybody. 1) Alan, of course when I wrote that I don't have a great consideration of artists that pay I didn't refer to you! I like your work! 2) What a pity for your project Fried/Frozen, I also misunderstood, I thought it was your subversive action and rather clandestine in the Biennial of this year that refers to clandestines... but in the Absolute Generation project! (another Extra 50 project). I didn't find your space in the Biennial, I was searching in the wrong place. 3) Note also that NOT ALL projects pay to participate in the Biennial, but only Extra 50 projects pay, it is a way to finance the Pavilions, I suppose, but the other Extra 50 have a good sponsor. 4) And note that in an important context like a Venice Biennial, serious curators could easy find serious sponsorization, they should not ask the participants for money . Anyway to pay or not is a personal decision, forget the Venice gossip. 5) Don't worry, other foreign artists, who don't know the Italian situation, fall in the same error : to accept to be included in a wrong context, where they had nothing in common, with image damage, some are angry as you are. 6) Problem is not the collaborative division of the exhibition costs but the consequences: that payment was the ONLY selection criteria of ALL the Italian artists and of some foreign in Brain Apt.. I have a formal invitation e-mail letter signed from both curators (who I don't know), were I am asked to pay 220 euros, if not paying, being excluded. Now I learn to someone else they were asking 1000 euros or 500 euros! Simply horrible. Poor artists! But, don't worry! your project was good, I validate and subscribe my fried/frozen participation, in the Biennial or not, it doesn't matter. Caterina - Original Message - From: Alan Bowman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 11, 2003 12:26 PM Subject: FLUXLIST: bon man's rainbow academy 1) we were asked to pay and we refused, with many important Italian artist, and the most important Italian visual poets (I don't have a great consideration of the artist who pay...), Everybody at the Biennale had to pay, this year La Biennale went 'private'. And I admit that I paid, it was an simple 'career move', I wanted to be able to put 'La Biennale di Venezia' on my curriculum (cynical li'l devil that I am). I was led to understand that the payment would go towards the 'entry fee' and various costs - construction, catalogue etc. In fact the whole thing had , initially a good sense of collectivism. Oh How wrong you can be! I would like to instigate some sort of FFFO counter events against these idiots who let us all down. Perhaps I will go and remove my name and logos personally. Nurse! My scalpel! Spraycan, Matches!

In the contest of a meeting of Italian artists and poets against war in Milan at the Mudima Foundation (an important and large exhibition space in Milan, Italy) on March 31, will be also presented a section of international experimental video, videopoetry and computer animations, digital poetry slides, and digital images, selected and curated by Caterina Davinio. Who wants to submit materials to the curator can send them to the address of Karenina.it Office (scroll down for this address). Remember that: 1. Topic of the video/computer works must be: PEACE/AGAINST WAR. 2. Typology of the videos: only non narrative, experimental videos are requested. Performance or poetry readings simply recorded in video are not accepted: accepted are videos experimental in the use of the video/computer language; we are particularly interested in concrete/visual poetry developed in video or in computer animation. Also requested are works which utilize verbal language, literary text, poetry, in the electronic media, not as simple superimposition, but in a new grammar that coniugates text, electronics and visual aspects. 3. Length: most wanted 1-2 minutes videos, max 3-5 min. 4. Format: only videocassette VHS standard PAL (we accept also files recorded on CD ROM, ONLY: short animated gif, avi, mpeg - other files not accepted -, but they will be re-recorded on a videocassette, for this reason works on videocassette are preferred). 5. The work will not be returned, it can be used in future for cultural purpose in other no-profit manifestations/festivals/presentations. 6. Information about the selected works, and about eventual itinerant developments, or future initiatives, will be given only by the web site Karenina.it (scroll down for the link). 7. Non selected works will not be returned. 8. FLUXLIST: Press Release: Paint from Nature at PERFORMANCESX6
CATERINA DAVINIO's Paint from Nature at PERFORMANCESX6. The net-art performance dedicated to the Twin Towers disaster will be presented June 8 in the contest of the Poetry/Performance exhibition organized by Akenaton at the EGLISE ANGLICANE, COURS GENERAL LECLERC, AJACCIO (F) Paint From Nature - the nature as media landscape and telematic passage - is made of 77 e-mails chosen among threehundred arrived at the Karenina.it Redaction September 11 - 15. In a rigorous non-iconic way it describes a tragedy, which no art image could comment. Realized for the first time in Florence February 4, 2002, at the opening of the visual poetry exhibition Tribute to Marinetti (Giubbe Rosse) and selected for the Rhizome net-art database (NY), Paint from Nature is now actuated in a new version: it contains a blank e-mail which represent all the not-received messages from Afghanistan and from all the poor countries tormented from war, that are condemned to the silence and to a sort of not-existence from the absence of technology. The choral sound of the rhizomers voices in the copy from nature, from the telematic truth - which actuates its existence in the continuous passage from the real to the virtual and back - comes from an every-place, or from a no-place, from a texture of contacts, which is also a thing, space where enter, wander, look for, reality. This space, in the performance Paint from nature, is copied down, or, with a metaphor, photographed, after it was framed in the monitor, together with some questions about what a net-performance really is, what a copy from nature and the nature self, for an artist, in the net, in the media universe, is, how Internet brings in discussion the role of the artist, his identity, and these concepts (identity, reality, copy, nature, original, presence, performance, role, space-time) result disintegrated but also reconstructed. Caterina Davinio's work Paint From Nature, made of interaction, action, e-mail art, creation of an object/real remote installation, copy realized with technologic instruments which are in hands of an artist today (digital, identical with the represented original, but that finally concretises itself in an unique not-reproducible experience this work, made of communic/action, and generating itself while the communication runs, do not falls under the categories that the art and the critic put at disposal. ___ PERFORMANCESX6 is a festival organized since 1992 by AKENATON (with Ministero della Cultura (DRAC), della Colletivittà Territoriale di Corsica e della città d'Ajaccio) Among the other artists/performers: - Philippe Bootz - David Christoffel - Michele Ettori - Frederique Guetat-Liviani - Joachim Montessuis - Cyril Bret - Akenaton (Philippe Castellin, Jean Torregrosa) - Photo video: D.V Dell'Azzione -- Midnight Runner - Karenina.it Express Archives / Videotheque / Rome / Lecco http://space.tin.it/arte/cprezi

FLUXLIST: net-art performance dedicated to the New York Twin Towers disaster
Paint From Nature by Caterina Davinio A net-art performance dedicated to the New York Twin Towers disaster Texts (Italian / English) http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Lights/7323/paintfromnature.htm Pictures http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Lights/7323/paintfromnaturepic.htm Paint From Nature - the nature as media landscape and telematic passage, is inspired to the disaster of the New York towers, event which has had a great impact on the collective imaginary in the planet also for the mass-media dimension which accompanied it. This space, in the performance Paint from nature, is going to be copied down, or, with a metaphor, photographed, after it was framed in the monitor, together with some questions about what a net-performance really is, what a copy from nature and the nature self, for an artist, in the net, in the media universe, is, how Internet brings in discussion the role of the artist, his identity, and these concepts (identity, reality, copy, nature, original, presence, performance, role, space-time) result disintegrated but also reconstructed. Caterina Davinio's work Paint From Nature, made of interaction, action, e-mail art, creation of an object, copy realized with technologic instruments which are in hands of an artist today (digital, identical with the represented original, but that finally concretises itself in an unique not-reproducible experience this work, made of communic/action, and generating itself while the communication runs, do not falls under the categories that the art and the critic put at disposal.
