Institute in Rome got lighted.

…So he walked thru the gallery’s door asking me : Bibiana?
I finally met Walter Cianciusi. The inaudito musician. The one who I was
supposed to meet two years ago. We stared at each other and –even this is
going to sound ridiculous, it was like we were not believing what we were
looking at. We walked around. Which is the one you like the less? Which is
the one you like the best? You got it.

Of course I was going to attend to his concert, what else is there to do in
Rome? Okay, no need to answer that.

I went to the concert because I wanted to hear the most recent work of his;
because I wanted to participate in the same euforia that he participated; I
wanted to listen and most important feel the audience reaction about his
piece.

Pickled Music*
A musical instrument in vinegar.
-Walter Cianciusi
So with my 40% of poor italian and my 100% of not perfect mexican spanish I
got Devon and myself from Trastevere to the other side of the city.

The Goethe Institut garden was filled with lights and speakers. At the end
of the stairs was Daniela, who invited us to sit down and listen. So we did.

Between shadows you could see the eyes of the audience following colorful
lights guided by the notes the speakers were emitting. What would the people
next building were thinking in their appartments while cooking dinner or
helping their kids do their homework? Would the sound infiltrates their
habitats making ecco? Does the music went into their places and keep on
going into the sould of the buildings by the ventilation? How far did the
music go? How pure was the music getting that far and how impure was at the
garden where we were sitting? Do I wanted to be there?

It is not that I wanted to be there only. I was there and the piece was
involving and flirting with us –all of us, giving an invitation to stay.

Music in Tabasco*
(an event for Bibiana Padilla Maltos)
A musical intrument in Tabasco.
-Walter Cianciusi
Contro I prometeici maghi dell’autopoiesi innovativa, was written in this
current year by Maestro Walter Cianciusi. An immersion on the deep and
frenetic music experimentation that takes us little by little from Xenaquis
to John Cage –my personal favorites, in a true search of chaotic
interpretations of small parts of life.
Reminds also Toc, Tom Zè’s piece, brazilian concrete poet and musician, and
I quote from David Byrne’s Brazil Classics 4 compilation so you can have an
idea of what I’m talking about:

“…an instrumet he constructed [Tom Zè]. It’s a cabinet with benders, vacuum
cleaners, floror polishers, and other appliances on each shelf. He “plays”
the appliances by pressing buttons on a “key-board” made out of doorbells
which turns the blenders, etc. on and off.
One cold evening this instrument became fuel for a bonfire made by a farmer.
Tom Zè claims he can build it again, given the materials, a carpenter, and
48 hours.”

I wonder what will oil, vinegar or tabasco would affect Cianciusi’s pieces.
I am excited and anxiously waiting for his new pieces.

*Walter Cianciusi’s events wrote after the presentation, 09/20/04.

Jesus and Her Gospel of Yes partially shot in Kent, featuring Cleveland
poets John Bennett, Michael Basinski & Cheryl Townsend, with music by Mike
Hovancsek, has won its first award: the Best Experimental Film in the Las
Vegas leg of the New York International Film Festival. The film will be
shown in Kent at the ECC Cultural Center on Sun 10/9. Buy the film direct
for $20 from Director & Producer Al Eaker at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

None of the poets are from Cleveland, but we've all visited there...

My Fellow Fluxlisters,

I am starting a new story project, an exquisite corpse. Let me know if you
want to participate, and
the more who do the better. I will send a sentence to the first person on
the list, who then must write a second sentence and send it back to me. I
will then send the second sentence to the next person on the list and so on.
I will only write the first sentence.
I plan on going through the list a few tmes.

Who's in?

FLUXLIST: AVTEXTFEST

2004-01-21 Thread bibiana padilla maltos
hi all,

I'm extending the deadline for AVTEXTFEST, since the fest won't take place
until april, so we have until the end of february to receive submissions.

For those who are not familiar with AVTEXTFEST, this is an experimental
literature festival that has been organized since 1998 being this year our
7th anniversary. (www.avtextfest.tk)

This year our theme is "black and white". All submissions will remain on our
archives, as always

Another thing, I need to update the data for the people who had participated
in previous years, so please be kind to forward me that info too, I have
good news for you.

Snail mail submission to the adresses shown at the end of this email..

cheers!!

Well, if you received a playing card in the mail, altered it, and sent it
back, that is David William's deck...if you made a card from scratch and
sent it - it was probably for this particular deck with the rule book.
If the latter scenerio is the case, let me know. I don't think I received a
card from you... If the first scenerio fits, please feel free to create a
card for this deck too!

Well, I'm still willing to collect, collate and print the book of rules.

Send them to me off-line

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did have a hard drive problem - so if you sent something back in the
mists of time, I'd send it again.
The one rule I have still got is from Walter Cianciusi
Here's something I wrote back then (April last year) as a guide -

We need rules to play the game. It should be quite interesting writing
the rules before anyone's seen the cards. Terrorist snap, anyone?
Remember a four of Machine Guns always beats a seven of Timing Fuses.
And the King of Hearts is wild. This is because the five of pumpkins has
run off with the Queen of Desire to set up home by the River Severn.
Meanwhile who would make a bid of Six No Frumps?
Best.

You're there and so do I, with a great news:
I HAVE FINISHED MY PH.D.!!!
(618 pages, 2 volumes, 865 bibliographical entries, hundreds of big names,
all you have never wanted to know about Fluxus, without asking for, I
thought I would die before the end, but finally I survived it.)
Now I can meet with my new born kid, who I hadn't seen so much since he were
born one month ago
I can play with the elder one
I can sleep with my wife
I can meet with friends
go to cinema
cafés,
restaurant
have people at home
doing parties
publish the symposium acts (which are waiting since last November)
thanks everyone
I can go to exhibitions (nice one from Takako Saito at Lara Vincy)
...in short, I can live again.

Bertrand

PS: pictures of Nice will be soon on www.4t.fluxus.net with a very good text
by Charles Dreyfus (although, still in French...)

Dear Bibiana, and fluxlisters,

here is what I received from Alison Knowles (and Willem De Ridder had
already talked about it to me):
Oct.23-26 Dutch Fluxfest, Netherlands, Utrecht. Video, film and
Performance. Curator: Willem de Ridder
I know Alison is planning to come, as Ben Patterson, Eric Andersen, and of
course Willem. Geoff Henfricks told me he will probably be there too, and I
guess there will be more people from Fluxus.

Dear Alan,

I shall be there around the 13th till the 16th, and I have a friend that
will welcome me at his place. He's an artist, and living in Nice, so maybe
he can help you to find something cheap or even free? I'll write him very

Otherwise, please welcome Sacha Clavez, my second son, born the 20th of

Hi. I'm here in Prague for the first Prague Biennale and the show is a day
late to open.
Today you could walk in and see everyone installing and it smelled like
paint.

Tomorrow night the 27th is a party on the pavilion at the Contemp. Center
here that
is open to all.

The show was organized with 100,000 euro - and is trying to rethink the
Biennale and
art organizations.

starting on Monday, there will be at least two newsletters a week for the
Toy Box. I again apologize for the delays and not answering ?'s quickly.
Normal everyday life has a way of screwing things up. My best friend came
in to town to present a lecture, and it took up my weekend. Also, I have
been extending the Toy Box and all it's wonders, and hope many of you will
think what's to come is pretty neat.

Since cost and construction (to be discussed) is still in the air, I have to
limit the box to only 10, but with other options available for a different
form of the Toy Box. The other versions will be limitless, and unique on
their own. Like I said, the Toy Box has taken off (in my head) and the
future of it hopefully will keep people (kids) interested.

In Monday's newsletter I will let you know if there are boxes left, and
inform those who are already on the list. Other material as well, and more
questions.

Thanks for the patience (again and again and again). I haven't ditched the
project or forgotten about it. Just keeps expanding, and I might ask for
some help in exchange for items.

Take care...

of course I was kidding too! I don't even know the names of the plaster
caster sisters (or if they're still doing penis casters!)

Therefore, I'll make it up to you and Bertrand:

Once, I had a tumor in one of my breasts growing extremely fast, I had to go
to surgery; while waiting for this to happend (3 weeks) I thought it might
be cancer and that I might loose my breast so I made a caster of it (just in
case) and made silicon replicas with a marble inside simulating the tumor I
had and started to send it to my friends and acquantainces like "treats"
saying I'm having a surgery X day do whatever you want with it, SO if
Bertrand is sending a dildo my breast MUST go in the toy box(ha!)

Any takers for inclusion?
what do you mean exactly?
What is a "score of dildo"? do you mean a music score?
And what type of box is it if "it is not that type of box"?
and why the "big black one"?
and why do these documents should be posted on a site?
are you doing the same with the others toys?
Who is Ms Sprinkle? Your neighbour?
Gosh, so much questions you have to answer!
Bertrand.

I'm not going out and buying a score of dildos. It is not that type of
box. If someone does want one included, you have to get the big black one,
and must take photos and a recorded soundscape of the action in which you
use it. These documents will then be posted on a site, and you have the
task of theoretically explaining what the hell you are doing. Finally, you
must get her Holy Higness, Sex Goddess Ms Sprinkle to autograph the dildo,
then send it back to me for inclusion.

  Any takers?

Henry Flynt still lives in , I think it's, Maciunas' last place.

The Emily Harvey Gallery is in the loft where Maciunas was beaten up on
Broadway and in the same building but on theMercer St side there's Ay-O and
Paik and somewher upstairs Simone Forti.
The EHG space was also, previously Jean Dupuy's Grommet Gallery.
The basement and sub-basement are really interesting too, along with Ay-O's
Black hole there's also the boiler/furnace that Yoko Ono broke and the one
Yoshi Wada built as well as all those nooks and crannies that just beg to be
explored.
The building which consists of 537 Broadway and 110 Mercer was bought, as
Meryl says, in the early days and on the whole the inhabitants are, well,
getting on a bit. I fear that in the next 10 - 15 years we'll see major
changes and another piece of Fluxus history will disappear.
I suggest that Allen Bukoff buy the building outright and that he turfs out
the dance studio allowing me to move in - that way we can ensure that groovy
goings on will continue for a goodly while - what with me being young and
that like!
All those in favour (you can come and stay!) ?

I adore the FluxList for Dummies idea, in any format.

FLUXLIST: stupid death

2002-12-30 Thread bibiana padilla maltos

it's funny -and scary- how people can die by the most stupid accidents: last
couple of days we had dinner a few friends and I here at home, next morning
we couldn't wake up.. can you guess why? (it wasn't the food...) the gas
from the stove was open for more than 10 hours my house smelled like garbage
truck, it didn't happend anything worst but our dizziness -so far.

anyway, it's - I think- a good reminder to participate at my "until my
death" project:

http://home.att.net/~amcnet/untilmydeath.html

be good, check your stoves at night, at morning, at every hour!!!

(12/11/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Stereolabvocalist Mary Hansen died Monday (December
9) in London when she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle. She was 36.

An official statement said: "The suddenness of her death has shocked the
band. Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are with her family and
friends who will miss her greatly."

Stereolab formed in 1990 and Australian native Hansen joined the
London-based band in 1992. The group has recorded eight studio albums the
most recent of which was 2001's Sound-Dust.

Hansen was born January 11, 1966 in Maryborough, Brisbane. The band says her
funeral will take place next week in her hometown.

London police are investigating the accident.

informative and gives some new and interesting insights into Fluxus. It

Dear Fluxlisters,

(I hope some of you will be able to come, but don't forget to e-mail me
before, in order to book a place for you)

"40 years of Fluxus: The Time At Work(s)" is a symposium dedicated to
...Fluxus that is planned in Paris, the 21&22 november 2002 organised by 4T
FluXuS, the Pierre Francastel Research Center, the French National
Intstitute for History of Art, and the National High School of
Telecommunication.
You can find all the informations on the website: www.4t.fluxus.net
but please find the english version of the program here:

THURSDAY MORNING. 21ST OF NOVEMBER 2002

1. working time, works in time
As a mainly performative art, denying the forms of the permanence linked to
the fétichisation, Fluxus has, since its very first moments, explored the
complete range of the ephemeral, even through the indeterminacy. Thus, from
the shortest to the longest, until the boundaries of the bearable even, the
time seems to be the very material of Fluxus, which we were already warned,
by the numerous process of the recordings of actions.
This first sequence will be dedicated to the questions of temporality within
Fluxus works: duration, references, inscription, recording, writing,
interpretation etc.

Pr. Hannah B. HIGGINS, University of Illinois, USA
"Fluxus and the art of Memory (Historic, Experimential, Personal)"

Pr. Owen SMITH, Maine University Art Dept., USA
"Fluxus: Thinking about Time, Marking Time and Playing with Time"

Jean-Yves BOSSEUR, Dir. de recherches au CNRS, Université de Paris IV,
France
"Fluxus et la temporalité musicale"

Jean-Claude MOINEAU, Théoricien, Maître de conférences, université de Paris
VIII, France
"Fluxus : une critique artiste de l'art"

THURSDAY AFTERNOON. 21st OF NOVEMBER 2002
2. works of those times.
How could have Fluxus work with time, without getting involved in its time,
i.e. its political moment also ? The flames between Henry Flynt, George
Maciunas, and the others artists show this engagement, as does the Great
Bear Pamphlets of Dick Higgins, and as does the implication of many artists
in the modification of the world they were living in.
This sequence will examines this particular aspect of the art and life
mingling, which means also the comprehension of political, economical,
ideological situation by the artists, in order to transform it, by the
ordinary means of the activism, but also by individual acts that have
contribute to shape our contemporary world.

Ben PATTERSON, Artiste Fluxus, Wiesbaden
"Time and Consequences: or, the Miracle of Fluxus. How It Saved the World!"

Vytautas LANDSBERGIS, Artiste Fluxus, Ex-président de la Lituanie
"Contacts and Perception of Fluxus in Lithuania Beyond the Iron Curtain and
Under Soviet Captive Mind System"

Kristine STILES, Maître assistant en Art, Duke University, USA.
"Around The Edges: Fluxus and Anomaly, Sky, Sex, and Psi"

Esther FERRER, Artiste du groupe Zaj, Espagne
"Performer sous Franco, de l'érosion de l'éternel par l'éphémère"

FRIDAY MORNING. 22nd OF NOVEMBER 2002

3. Collecting, selling, exhibiting Fluxus : market time as time goes by.
There is a kind of paradox when one tries to think Fluxus through its
material objects, but there are Fluxus artists, art sellers, collectors,
curators, exhibitions, and works into collections (private or public) etc.
This statement, a kind of principle of reality, has to be thought by
scholars, in order to reevaluate Fluxus regarding its realizations too, and
not only regarding its intentions. What can one buy in Fluxus? How can one
make a choice in establishing a collection? Under what historical
positioning? How can an event be sellable? What to place in the museum? All
those questions will be asked to the actors of such a specific art market.

Caterina GUALCO, Galeriste de Fluxus, Italie
"Le marché de l'anti-marché, ou le miracle permanent du marchand de Fluxus"

Francesco CONZ, Collectionneur Fluxus, Italie
"Un collectionneur dévot (fétichiste par excellence) a-t-il le droit de son
vivant de vendre sa collection?"

Should I worry? Fabrice's e-mail address is thestockholmsyndrome! Does
this mean he's being held captive (in Sweden), but has come to identify with
his captors(in Sweden)? This could be bad.

But, probably not as bad as my mistaking Leeds for Leicester, which makes me
think of The Who's Live at Leeds album, which makes me think about the very
recent passing of John Entwistle (age 57), which makes me think I've gotten
much older than I thought I'd ever get. Sigh.

(Allen:) Do convey my apologies to Fabrice. I've been informed (by people
who claim to know) that apparently nobody wants to be from Leeds. I'm
guessing it must be the English equivilent of Pittsburgh.
