I've been away. Now I'm back
here.

Had a cell phone for three days once.
Returned it. I don't want to be that accessible.

I have a driver's license but almost never
drive. I walk or take mass transit.

I read and hoard books (and I work in the
publishing industry). I don't like the idea of "E-books." Too
clean.

I see deer shit out the window/

Never played a video game (except Pong).

Addicted to television. Nonstop visual
stimulation.

Don't really know how many emails I get
daily. Twenty? Thirty? Keep some.

Addicted to methamphetamine for just over two
years(long ago).Still addicted to tobacco. Invariably involved
with alcoholics (sometimes active, sometimes dry), although I myself don't
metabolize alcohol too well. Took loads and loads of pills. Acid in
college. Dope in college (I've always found the opiates dull). Pot
in high school. Cocaine in college and f or a few years after. Now, it's
down to tobacco and the occasional Xanex. Pathetic, really.

I have to interact with people every day, but I
don't much think about it.

Some friends took me to Atlantic City so I could
photograph Giant Jersey Butts and other boardwalk attractions. It was
ghastly, I loved it! There's a statue of Bert Parks (he used to host the
Miss America pagent for many years). He's holding out a crown, and if you
stand underneath it a hidden speaker starts blaring "here she comes, miss
america..." It's great. I have no gambling luck whatsoever. In
fact, I may even be a jinx to other gamblers, so I don't gamble. I like
some slot machines, though.

Just came back from Wildwood New Jersey (down the
shore). The longest, trashiest boardwalk. The googiest motels (we
stayed at the Casa Bahama - all aqua/pink/yellow A frames). It's just
wonderful. And I hate the beach.

52 card pick-up deck
marbles
dice
black baby doll
blank coloring book
small rubber cow

I work very close to Canal street, the land of 1,000 industrial plastics
suppliers (oh, alright, three). These shops carry a dizzying array of
smallish, inexpensive boxes in a variety of sizes and colors. Almost all the
colors are transparent (save the black and white).I don't believe any are more
than $5.00 and most are considerably less. The problem is that they tend to
be a little on the brittle side and may not do too well on
transatlantic/pacific voyages.

even a word is a container so anything is a container looked at in the right

In today's world the idea of containment and those who wish to blow shit up,
let things fall apart, etc and terrorize those who feel safe in containment
or whose real desire it seems is to keep an older conceptual form of
containment active (a belief system) this has a lot of potentially poignant

Is it not time to start thinking of a second FluxList Box? I treasure the
first one and I love showing it to visitors.

While recently thinking of the Fluxus for Dummies book that will never get
finished, I thought that a FluxList box is a project I could tend to
completion. Who is in it with me?

Should we have the same parameters as last time? I have not began to look
 for boxes.

I would prefer that the theme of the box be kept free (i.e. open to any
interpretation), but I would like to suggest two titles:

 a) Box #2: FluxList for Dummies
 b) FluxList Box for Peace

However, everything is open for debate.

most of the time the list goes along and is really informative, fun and

when one of the flaming incidents occurs is it not posssible to just

one day i counted and there were 55 one line posts from artnants in my

being so annoying. i spend most of my time on the list recently deleting
everything by her and the whole kandinskij negativity which has filed
the list throughout the holiday season.

i think all of this is keeping our good folk off line so we are all
writing off list which isn't always really the point of the list. is
there anything that can be done or is their (the offenders)freedom the
 most important?

I know a Lyla. She's not German either, she's Latvian, but she's been known
to sing and to teach singing in Germany. So there.

I'm really sorry for the seemingly aggressive sarcasm.
It was not committed by me, but by Lyla,
a 9 years old girl who visited us with her parents,
and played with my unguarded, running computer
while we - the adults - were taking Prozac
 in the other room.
I guess she just wanted to help.
 By-the-by Lyla is not German.

Ok ok, I have a pee tale too:

Back in the early 1960's I took a pee standing next to Norman Thomas, for
many years the leader and presidential candidate of the US Socialist
party. It was in Washington DC, I think, during a ban the bomb
demonstration. It was hello, and then flush.

OK this is a bit late but I have also peed with the famous. Or at least
the musically illustrious. I once found myself alone in the can with
Kaija Saariaho (great Finnish composer) at the premier of a work of hers
in LA. I don't remember why no one else was in the usually overpopulated
bathroom. Must have been during some of the music. Well. We chatted
briefly and I asked on what label she recorded, she told me and we went
on with our lives.

Should I worry? Fabrice's e-mail address is thestockholmsyndrome! Does
this mean he's being held captive (in Sweden), but has come to identify with

But, probably not as bad as my mistaking Leeds for Leicester, which makes me
think of The Who's Live at Leeds album, which makes me think about the very
recent passing of John Entwistle (age 57), which makes me think I've gotten
much older than I thought I'd ever get. Sigh.

Re: FLUXLIST: badgergirl

2002-06-05 Thread meryl

Sol,

Actually, Badgergirl is a name that was bestowed upon me during my brief
sojourn into the NYC pagan community. Well, the badger part was bestowed
upon me (because I'm low to the ground, bad tempered, and generally
hungry Or so I'm told. I added the girl (as opposed to woman, womyn,
or suchlike) to piss off the gynocentric crowd. Which I did. Particularly
when they'd condemn me for my use of girl and I'd tell them that, really, I
preferred to be thought of as a tomato, but it didn't scan too well with
badger. This brought them close to violence and meat eating.

Of course the ability to upset self-rightous dullards isn't much of a
superpower. I can also make myself disappear, but only at the office.

And yes, a song can have no words and no music and still be a song. As long
as it's pink. Or possibly orange.

Badger (It's really too early for me to be typing because I'm certainly not
thinking yet and besides I should be on my way to work by now but who really
cares, right?) Girl

We could include all the articles and work we've done that everyone tells us
 isn't Fluxus ;)

BTW - Is it just me or do recent posts for Fluxus events suggest that Fluxus
hasn't had any new ideas for over 20 years and is just going through the

like the man says boredom is counter-revolutionary

why not follow Debord's routefound Fluxus International and expel

It's funny (or maybe it's not), but it's Fleet week here in NYC (that
means that these huge warships and carriers and suchlike are all docked here
for a week). And due to this, there's all kinds of a security alert.
But, they keep flying these fighter planes over manhattan, really low, not
for security reasons but to give all the yahoos a thrill. And all day, when
they flew over the Flatiron (a very old building) the windows rattled, the
floors shook, and people kept freaking out. They fly these little fighters

Do people in the US really believe there is the possibility of nuclear

fact that Bush etc. knew about 9-11 beforehand.

I would have thought that the more serious nuclear worry at the moment was
the possibility of war between India and Pakistan.

Indeed that is very true. I don't sense that there's great worry about nuclear
attacks here. I wouldn't give it a second thought myself. Whereas yes there's
very real danger in the situation you write of. It may be hard for people not

Re: FLUXLIST: Re:Artist/Fluxlist?

Carol,

No, all this is supposed to be fun, you see. It's like a carnival for the
military and their fans. Also, bear in mind that Manhattan is a fairly
narrow island, it wouldn't take a fighter jet more than 8 seconds to fly
across it's width.

No foolin,' people are coming in from all around to see these ships and talk
to the navy and airforce guys. It probably is kinda fun for the sailors and
aviators who get to kill a week in NYC and be the center of all sorts of
strange admiration. They do look kinda cute in their fancy dress sailor
suits.

Some fun.

M

Also: I got my really swell address book a few days ago. It's by Norman
Sherfield and has the flatest dog I've ever seen. One of the inner covers
has what looks to me like a crudely drawn veve for Erzulie (a Voudoun
goddess). And that's a good thing.

Yep. Lot's of snatzo zap appeal from Norman. (Really satisfying tape
overlays too.)

 hi meryl,

it must be very difficult in new york right now with all the 'security' scare

flying
inland so much over the flatiron building, after all the fleet is in the

think there is a plan to set people on edge as much as possible so that more
and
more of our rights disappear 'for our own good'. it is a tragedy.

2002-04-13 Thread meryl

Presented for your deletion:

A list of things observed to have passed before (or around) Allen Bukoff
while he observed his dots in NYC (with the addition of two Allen
interactional events).

6:39 - Enormous young man rushes by.

6:41 - Pregnant woman on cellphone dressed entirely in black.

6:42 - Fat man in forgettable outfit.

6:45 - Observant Jewish man looks fetchingly over his shoulder towards
Allen.

6:46 - Herd of slow moving patriots.

6:47 - South American guy in blue cap walks into shoe store.

6:48 - Dean and Deluca truck nearly obscures view.

6:49 - Allen suddenly moves to the right!

6:50 - Exceedingly cartoon-like man on bicycle.

6:52 - Interestingly shaved head man bounces uptown.

6:53 - Woman with shopping cart walks against the traffic. Does not get
killed.

6:54 - Rastaman with 1970s pimp jacket.

6:55 - Slow moving man in blue baseball cap.

6:57 - Woman in hat that looks like a woolen bucket and nice blue velvet
coat.

6:59 - Creepy guy in reversed baseball cap moving slowly and arguing with
girlfriend (sans hat).

7:00 - Couple in red stall out in front of Timberland store.

7:01 - Parachute pants and blue bandana guy.

7:02 - Allen attempts to sell 536 Broadway to a young woman who declines
offer and flees.

7:03 - Tragic figure in white socks, Burkenstock sandals and baseball cap.

7:05 - Allen again attempts to sell 536 Broadway to a passerby. This time,
a small business man who declines the offer and escapes uptown.

7:06 - Right leg falls asleep.

7:08 - Indistinct man in flat black leather cap and turn up jeans.

7:09 - White boy in black (notation garbled) hat and bad glasses.

7:10 - Rabbinical looking guy in black borsalino hat.

7:11 - Two guys with matching grey backpacks. One in exotic head wrap the
other in bandana.

7:12 - Young woman in blue head wrap carrying a shopping bag from Yellow Rat
Bastard.

7:13 - Skate rat in leopard print backwards baseball cap.

These notes were taken in conjunction with a pleasant young man from Leeds
whose name I've forgotten but it was something like Fabrice and hopefully he
will forgive me for having forgotten because I'm just dreadful with names
and besides I tried to remember really I did but at least I remembered he
was from Leeds (you were from Leeds, weren't you) and that ought to count
for something don't you think?

NB: Allen Bukoff is now my best friend in the whole world because he gave
me stuff. Clearly, like the Manhattan indians, I can be had for a handful

That is, without a doubt, the most terrifying bunch of things I've seen all week (not counting the denizens of the Flatiron building). I'm going to have bad dreams for days.

That gnome on the blue sheet (you know, the one with the teeth) was particularly troubling.

I work in the Flatiron building in Chelsea. Let me know if you want a tour
(to see what a total wreck it is on the inside). Also, the Flatiron is just
round the corner from Live Bait, a fine establishment with a well-stocked
bar and the best heart attack inducing chicken fried chicken sandwhich north
of the Mason-Dixon line.

Um...ya'all.

Does this Captain Fluxlist have to have anything to do with our list at
all? Anyone submitting a cover could submit their own picture.

How shockingly awful! Like some others it seems, I had absolutely no idea
she was ill. In hindsight I realize her decorate my bald head contest
should have given me a clue. (Duh!)

Although I really didn't know the Princess other than via her lively
postings to this list, I have known other people with particularly
pernicious cancers. It's always devastating to have people we love and care
about leave us, no matter how much we think we're prepared for the departure
we never are. We can take some small comfort in knowing that her painful
ordeals are over. This should be a reassuring thought (theoretically), but
the bottom line is -- it sucks. There's no denying it.

It just sucks.

My sympathies go to those who loved her best.

Re: FLUXLIST: no subject

No, it really is true. The cuneiform was the pattern of it's coat (clearly
this was a short haired cat). Orange and white it was.

In the same dream, I dreamt my neigbor's landscaper put in a koi pond for me
at no charge (because my neighbors are philistines).

I hate remembering my dreams. I rarely do.

Re: FLUXLIST: Tragedy (Not the Bee Gees Song)

2001-09-22 Thread meryl

Roger and all,

It seems to me that the answer is education. Education as broad based and
even handed as possible.

The more people know about the planet they occupy, how they got where they
are, etc. the happier they'll be. You know, the basics of hard science, a
non-biased overview of as many arts and cultures as is possible, etc.

The more knowledge people aquire the less likely they are to depend on god
to tell them what to do with their lives. Surely it comes as no surprise to
any of you that more people have died in the name of god than for any
other reason. When you leave all of life's important decisions to a
nebulous idea of omnipotence personified, well... it's not good.

 Hi -

Well, the Fluxlist has been very quiet recently. Not surprising, I guess.
I wonder what the response of the artist is to events and times such as
 these?

A few thoughts, for what they're worth, from this side of
 the Pond -

1 Nice one, Meryl! Had to agree.

2 I object to the coming war on the following grounds -

More innocent people are about to die.

I can't see what it will achieve. The Taliban aren't going
 to surrender bin Laden.

Despite what Bush and Blair say about it not being an attack on
Muslims (and I'm sure it's not) ordinary, and ill-informed people
the world over will think it is - that causing more unrest and trouble.

On a lesser note, historic buildings will be destroyed.

Surely there MUST be a better way to rid the world of
terrorism. This is what the debate should be about.

 Hey ho -

 Peace and Love

 Roger

Re: FLUXLIST: re badgergirl

2001-09-22 Thread meryl

Gee, guess you sure told me!

I did, in fact, look at your sources. Not exactly the most unbiased sources
of info on the middle east (yes, even Amnesty International!) in my opinion.
Noam Chomsky?! Oh the pain. But of course I always take as gospel whatever
Ted Koppel says...

Look, I'm not going to argue with you. I've been down this road before. Why
waste my time and the time of the Fluxlist folk? Arguing with people like
you is like trying to argue with a drunk, there's no point. Clearly the
Palestinians (who are technically Jordanian) are nobel victims, innocent
dupes, incapable of wrong doing and the Israelis are the schoolyard bullies
of the Middle East, picking fights without provocation and stealing
everyones lunch money.

Reading the accounts of people you haven't met is not really helpful. I've
known many people (both Israeli AND Arab) who live, work, and survive in
that difficult terrain. They would all find your opinions (and much of your
source material) dubious if not actually laughable.

Here's a fact for you: Jews and Arabs are both Semitic peoples and see the
world somewhat differently then the West. Their values and methods of
communications are organized rather differently then those of Europe et al.
Perhaps the answer is to leave them to it and stop trying to inflict our
Western morals and values on two peoples who probably don't need the
aggravation.

But the real solution, of course, is to air-condition and carpet the entire
region, then watch the tensions melt.

That's my final answer.

Badgergirl

spell check program, for mercy's sake.)
