FM 9 Workspace (x-posted to Framers and Free Framers)

2010-02-04 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

Thanks to so many of you for the emails and assistance in helping me to
understand how to get this "newfangled" FM workspace idea to actually work
for me. I am still having a few quirks - like having to periodically reset
it after I have been hammering away in FM all day, but it's getting better.
I do have one nagging question about the setup:

I currently have my Standard workspace set up as follows from left to right
- My book file, the pane for an individual FM file, by paragraph and
character catalogs opened and stacked on top of each other, my most commonly
used pods in a docked list, and my drawing bar. I have all of my files
opening as tabs across the top. The only thing I can't get to hold constant
is the width of my book file. I squish the book file to the width that I
want, expand my pane for my individual chapter files, and save the
workspace. When I open my workspace, it all opens as described above but
with one exception - the book file is opened wider than I want (it opens to
the same bigger width every time) and the pane for my chapter file is
squished down, so I have to squish the book file and open the chapter file
wider.

Is there a way to keep the book file squished down to the width that I want
when I open my workspace?

Thanks,

TVB

Not that I've found. I don't know if it's a bug, but I'd call it a design
flaw. I wish I could reclaim that extra little bit of space. It makes the
difference between being able to display at a two-page spread at full screen
height or not for me.

I am filled with regret at having purchased TCS w/FM9. I evaluated the
MadCap tools a few times and it got down to "the devil you know."

One of the serious advantages of having a user-configurable workspace is
that consistent use enhances your workflow. I knew I would face workflow
changes on the switch to FM9 and accounted for the time required. I was
unaware, though, that the workspace in FM9 would not hold a
configuration from launch to launch. Each time I launch FM9, I must
perform some workspace reconfiguration to put the workspace back like it
was the most recent time FM9 was open; the way I like it; the way it has
been incorporated into my workflow; the way it saves me time.

Using FM9, just using FM9!, has become a task that I must take into
account when I size my work...Kelly.

Except for the book window-width glitch mentioned in this thread, FM 9 does
save the workspace. In fact, you can save multiple workspaces, each tuned to
a particular need. Have you watched the great video on the new user
interaface here?:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?loc=en%5Fus&id=1485846&event=register%5Fno%5Fsession

I found it immensely useful in helping me figure out the new workspace,
which I now love.

Unable to apply custom DPI

2010-02-04 Thread Galanter, Lea
Hi All,

I'm using Frame 9 (9.0p237) in TCS2 on Windows 7 and I'm running into a
strange problem I've never encountered in previous versions of Frame.
After I insert a graphic (a .png), I normally change the DPI (through
the Object Properties dialog box) to Custom dpi: 120. For some reason,
Frame is now ignoring my change and automatically selecting 150 dpi.
Nothing I do will make it apply the custom DPI setting. Has anyone else
experienced this? Is it a Frame 9 bug and is there a workaround?

I'm also finding that when Frame inserts a new graphic it "stretches" it
lengthwise, making it totally distorted - Frame 8 never did this. Is
there some import setting that I'm missing that perhaps was already set
in Frame 8 and that I need to set in Frame 9? Strangely enough, I just
took another screenshot, pasted it in, and it looks perfect. Any
thoughts?

TIA

Yes, of course. I open in the same workspace each time...the one I set-up when

OT: Is there software for burning cross-platform CDs from PC?

2010-02-04 Thread Wendy McGovern
Hi, Framers

Does anyone know if there is software for burning cross-platform CDs
from PCs rather than Macs?

We use Frame 7 to make PDF files of our books and do CDs with Acrobat
files, a ReadMe simple text file, and sometimes Word and WordPerfect
forms files. We used to use an old Mac (OS 8.6) with Toast, but they
recently put in a new server and now they can't get the Mac to see the
server where our PC files are anymore. Getting a new Mac is not an
option. We did try to transfer the files to the Mac by jump drive and
burning a CD from the PC, but it wouldn't recognize the disks.

Is there a Toast equivalent for the PC that will let us burn
cross-platform? We do use only 8.3 naming convention for our files.

We have Windows XP, Acrobat 8 Pro.

We need to get a book CD out ASAP, so any immediate advice would be
welcomed. Thanks!

Standalone FM 9 (all patched) and RH 8.02 - (xposted to three lists)

2010-02-04 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

I do NOT have TCS2, but I am posting to several lists in hopes of findng an
answer. I have standalone FM 9 (all patched) and standalone RH 8.0.2
installed on a 64 bit Win7 system. Whenever I open RH and request to import
a FM file, I get one of the following two messages:

1.) Import error - failed to complete import. the import function grinds
and grinds and then times out with this error message.

2.) the "x".fm is NOT a FM file. Make sure that it is open and is a FM file.
Uh, yea, it is and it is open, otherwise, I wouldn't be trying to import it.

I am frustrated, stymied, panicked - you name it. I am on the hook for OLH
for a client and I am at a complete loss. I can't get anywhere with RH.

Where do I start, what do I do?

Thanks!

This has to do with the new UI: After selecting a new DPI value,
it will be shown correctly in the Object Properties, but you must
also click the Apply button for the new value to be registered.

OT: Is there software for burning cross-platform CDs from PC?

2010-02-04 Thread qui...@airmail.net
You can always use ISO9660 format. Roxio has Roxio Creator 2010 which
should do this.

But on the whole, no, there are very few Windows programs that will
format HFS+ format, if any. Windows programs are inherently limited and
narrow visioned as far as format is concerned.

Of course the Mac you are using is probably around 10 years old. Amazing
how long it functioned isn't it? And if it is that old it probably
relies on Appletalk. A more recent OS would integrate seamlessly into
your ethernet.

I don't know if there's an FM9 bug (but suggest updating, as Jeff
recommended). But I don't understand why you're changing the DPI through
Object Properties _after_ the import.

When importing a graphic file (File > Import > File, or Esc f i f),
after you select the file in the Import dialog box, the Imported Graphic
Scaling dialog box appears. There, you can choose from the following:

-- Fit in Selected Rectangle

-- One of four standard DPI settings, 72, 75, 150, and 300 (with
resulting image dimensions shown in parentheses)

-- Custom dpi, followed by a text box where you can specify the setting
you want, e.g., 120

If the graphic is being stretched, that strongly suggests that you have
the Fit in Selected Rectangle option selected in the Imported Graphic
Scaling dialog. I believe that dialog retains the last used setting. I'm
not sure why you seem to be unaware of that dialog box.

I just noticed you used the word "pasting" -- are you using copy/paste
instead of an actual file import? Bad, bad, bad idea. And that would
explain why you don't/can't set the DPI correctly initially.

Very easily done. Just precede the space with a backslash.

Appendix A of the FrameMaker User Guide contains a table of "escaped" keystroke
combinations to allow you to type special characters in dialog boxes.

OT: Is there software for burning cross-platform CDs from PC?

Scott,
Yes there is a Windows tool that will give you HFS+, Joliet, and Rockridge,
besides the newer version of Roxio, and it is free.

There is a cygwin port of the Unix makeiso utility. I have been using it for
several years to produce CDs that are destined for cross-platform use.

Standalone FM 9 (all patched) and RH 8.02

2010-02-04 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I find when I get the "not a valid FM file" message, I can just hit OK & it
still scans it & pulls it in. It doesn't seem to need to be open in FM at the
same time as trying to import it (tried that already). Do you get the OK button?

The import error message may have something to do with resources (I try to
close down as much stuff as I can when using RH - it seems to be a real memory
pig) or it may have something to do with the source FM file. I make sure that
any books are updated & there are no issues over in FM before trying to pull
anything into RH.

What happens if you save the FM file as MIF and suck that into RH? I've never
tried it, but I wonder if it would work. Just my 2 cents worth ;>)

Is the break occurring in the content of the cross-reference format
definition, or in the referenced heading itself when it is copied to the
x-ref location? If the former, others have already answered; if the
latter, then you need to put non-breaking spaces (Ctrl + space) or
discretionary hyphens (Esc, hyphen, Shift + d) into the original heading.

[Free Framers] Standalone FM 9 (all patched) and RH 8.02 - (xposted to three lists)

2010-02-04 Thread Spectrum Writing
I forgot to clarify - yes, I did create a new blank RH project before I
tried the import and there were no errors in my FM file. Long story short -
after rebooting, and starting FM and creating a small FM primer file with
just a few paragraphs, I imported the primer file into a blank project and
all was fine. I then was able to import one by one all of my other FM files
that I could not before. (and yes, I had rebooted and reopened FM and RH
and created a new blank RH project several times before - the only
difference was this FM "primer" file.)

Matt Sullivan suggested this trick to me - why it works he's not sure, but
he has seen the trick work before and it helped me. After I get the project
the way that I want it, I can delete the primer file and should be good to
go.

Thanks Matt.

Unable to apply custom DPI

2010-02-04 Thread Galanter, Lea
Thanks for the tip on clicking Apply in the Object Properties dialog
box, Shlomo, but there's no way to do that. Once you click Set in the
Imported Graphic Scaling dialog box, the Object Properties dialog box
closes. Strange.

I also think I discovered when the "stretching" occurred -- it's when I
take a new screenshot, and then save it with the same name as the
current screenshot already in the Frame doc. When Frame automatically
updates the graphic, it appears stretched. Again, I never had this
problem before in Frame. If I delete the graphic and import it fresh,
then the graphic imports fine. (I never select Fit to Rectangle, and I
never manually paste a graphic in directly to a Frame doc.)

I have book (e.g., book.bk) with files (Ch1.fm, Ch2.fm, Ch3.fm,Ch4.fm)
that I would like to print as pdf files. I would like a book.pdf (all
chapter files combined in one file) and Ch1.pdf, Ch2.pdf, Ch3.pdf and

setting of "Print Book As: Single Print Job". I would like now create
the individual chapter pdf files in some sort of automated fashion.
When I change to the setting of "Print Book As: Single Print Job" I am
prompted to name each file and location. Is there a way to make the
selection and have the file name be that of the .fm file and not a
combination of the book and chapter file name by default. To further
this it would be real nice if this could be accomplished in silent mode
i.e., I am not bother with the naming of the individual files. In
reality there are many more files and over time this is going to be a
pain. Any ideas on streamlining this workflow?

You want to specify *.ps in Print to File and select Separate File for Each
Document from Save Book As:. This will give you inidividual postscript files
for each chapter, named the same as the chapter files.

I am filled with regret at having purchased TCS w/FM9. I evaluated the

One of the serious advantages of having a user-configurable workspace is
that consistent use enhances your workflow. I knew I would face workflow
changes on the switch to FM9 and accounted for the time required. I was
unaware, though, that the workspace in FM9 would not hold a

Any
thoughts?

TIA

One of the serious advantages of having a user-configurable workspace is that

Re: OT: Is there software for burning cross-platform CDs from PC?

2010-02-04 Thread quills

Re: OT: Is there software for burning cross-platform CDs from PC?

2010-02-04 Thread Alan T Litchfield
The server (don't know what OS it is running) would need to have
Appletalk (e.g. netatalk) running for the Mac to see it, or if it has
an ftp server run something like Fetch on the Mac to download required
files. Obviously the Mac will need to have TCP/IP configured and
running (don't use DHCP, use a manually assigned IP address).

I do this now for an old Mac running System 7.6 and I need to move
files to the Leopard machine.

Scott,
Yes there is a Windows tool that will give you HFS+, Joliet, and Rockridge,
besides the newer version of Roxio, and it is free.

There is a cygwin port of the Unix makeiso utility. I have been using it for
several years to produce CDs that are destined for cross-platform use.

RE: Standalone FM 9 (all patched) and RH 8.02

All,

answer. I have standalone FM 9 (all patched) and standalone RH 8.0.2 installed
on a 64 bit Win7 system. Whenever I open RH and request to import a FM file, I
get one of the following two messages:

1.) Import error - failed to complete import. the import function grinds and
grinds and then times out with this error message.

2.) the "x".fm is NOT a FM file. Make sure that it is open and is a FM file.
Uh, yea, it is and it is open, otherwise, I wouldn't be trying to import it.

I am frustrated, stymied, panicked - you name it. I am on the hook for OLH

Where do I start, what do I do?

Is the break occurring in the content of the cross-reference format
definition, or in the referenced heading itself when it is copied to the
x-ref location? If the former, others have already answered; if the
latter, then you need to put non-breaking spaces (Ctrl + space) or
discretionary hyphens (Esc, hyphen, Shift + d) into the original heading.

RE: [Free Framers] Standalone FM 9 (all patched) and RH 8.02 - (xposted to three lists)

RE: Unable to apply custom DPI

Printing PDF from Framemaker

2010-02-04 Thread kgrace4715
I have book (e.g., book.bk) with files (Ch1.fm, Ch2.fm, Ch3.fm,Ch4.fm)
that I would like to print as pdf files. I would like a book.pdf (all
chapter files combined in one file) and Ch1.pdf, Ch2.pdf, Ch3.pdf and
Ch4.pdf. Printing the book.pdf file can be accomplished with the
setting of "Print Book As: Single Print Job".
