$60 for just o-n-e utility...? $60 is the price of many complete

a number of complete Word VBA programs and until now it never occured to me

I understand that MS offers a free XP emulator that you can download and
install. This helps to run "older" apps on Win7 64-bit.

Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
You just have to add a header row (Table>Add Rows or Columns>Add 1 Row
To Heading).

Unlike Word, you can't tell Frame that a row is (or is not) a heading
row. If you want a heading row, you have to add one. If you don't want a
heading row, you have to delete it.

Also, when a table is imported from Word, it may have custom ruling
which you may not want. Select the entire table, then select
Table>Custom Ruling and Shading>From Table (to all sides of cell)>Apply.

Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Avi,
Rick Quattro's Table Cleaner plugin makes short work of this. Simply select
the row or rows you want to repeat, and choose Table > Convert Select Rows >
Body to heading Rows.
Short of that, you might try a) applying a table format to the imported
table, and b) add a header row (Table > Add Rows or Columns > Add a Header a
Header Row), c) copy and paste the original cells into that, then delete the
original row.

Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Avraham Makeler
Hi all,

RE: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated
for further pages of the table

Using: FM 7.2.
Importing from: Word 2003

I found that when I import documents from Word 2003 that contain long
tables, the table heading row is not repeated for further pages of the same
table.

I expected there to be a simple Properties setting controlling this, but I
could not find one. I tried opening the FM documents in FM 8 to see if such
a Properties setting exists there, and still no luck.

So I ran a search for a solution, and I found the *"The Word-to-Frame table
macro"*, by a certain *Stephen Sealy*, at:
http://www.techknowledgecorp.com/public/word2frame.pdf

You save your FM document as a MIF file, and then load it into Word's VBA
environment (yes...Word - we just want to use the Word API's powerful string
processing facilities), and run Stephen's VBA program.

Ok, great - but it didn't work. So I debugged it a bit, and found that it
used a search string that was not quite accurate, so the searches did not
work. Ok - so I fixed that, and ran it again. Then I found that it started
to update the MIF by adding header rows, but then it hung the PC.

OK - so it probably works, but maybe it was written for a different version
of FM and/or MIF.
So is there a different solution for this?
Or does somebody have a debugged version of this VBA program? (For FM 7.2.)

TIA

If the file is Word 2007 (and presumably 2010), you can make a copy of the
file, change the extension from .docx to .zip.

Uncompress the zip and the graphics (Word optimized and originals) will all
be in a media folder. (This works for PowerPoint 2007 too.)

I have not tried taking a Word 2003 file and saving it as 2007 to process
this way, so I don't know if it will work or not.

Indeed, Rick's TableCleaner plug-in is what you need. You can even batch
convert body rows to heading rows and then select the option to only convert
rows in tables without existing heading rows:

Extracting embedded graphics from Word

2010-07-01 Thread Gaghan, Steven P.
Hi All,
Another way to get the graphics involves using Word 2007.

1. Create a copy of the file saving it using the .docx extension.

2. Go to the folder where you saved the docx.

3. Change the file extension from .docx to .zip. For example,
"sample.docx" would become "sample.zip". A zip file is created.

4. Extract the contents of the zip file.

5. Open the extracted folder, and go to word > media. All of the images
used in the document are in the "media" folder in their original file format.
The original names of the images are lost, but you have all of the images in
one folder.

I hope that helps!

Thanks,

Steven P. Gaghan

Keyboard shortcuts to pod elements

2010-07-01 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I'm in the same boat. I used to use AutoIt for repetitive tasks, and
these pods make things difficult.

However, if anyone is interested, AutoIt comes with a utility for
displaying window info. It's called AutoIt Window Info. It comes with
AutoIt, which is free. If anyone tries it, let me know if it helps.

Extracting embedded graphics from Word

2010-07-01 Thread Tim J. Slager
The newer MSO Picture Manager also saves files with no quality loss. It is also
handy for batch exporting to other formats or sizes.

Does anyone remember Microsoft Photo Editor. Trying to get photos,
screen captures, any graphic out of Word using everything I have learned
over 16 years being a technical writer never worked. One day I happened
to be on one of the old computers at my home and Microsoft Photo Editor
was installed, so I put the Word file on the old computer, opened it,
copied a graphic from it into Photo Editor by selecting Edit then Past
as New Image in Photo Editor and VOILA, I could save as .BMP, .JPG, etc
with NO QUALITY LOSS. I use the method to this day. Hope everyone finds
this helpful.

Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

2010-07-01 Thread Clara Hall
I am doing some freelance work in FrameMaker. One of the requirements is
that the work be done in FM 6.0. I am currently working with FM 8.0. Is
there a way to develop in 8.0 and then somehow save the files to be
compatible to 6.0. Maybe saving them as a mif files? Would that work?

Also, does anyone know where I could get a copy of FM 6.0?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is notrepeated for further pages of the table

Re: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

TIA

Indeed, Rick's TableCleaner plug-in is what you need. You can even batch
convert body rows to heading rows and then select the option to only convert
rows in tables without existing heading rows:

Hi Avi,
Rick Quattro's Table Cleaner plugin makes short work of this.

Just remembered FM9 exists. Does anybody know if FM9 has a Table Properties
setting for this? (So I could install an evaluation edition for now (does it
save...?) and save my FM file backwards to FM8 to FM7.)

Re: Keyboard shortcuts to pod elements

2010-07-01 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I'm in the same boat. I used to use AutoIt for repetitive tasks, and
these pods make things difficult.

However, if anyone is interested, AutoIt comes with a utility for
displaying window info. It's called AutoIt Window Info. It comes with
AutoIt, which is free. If anyone tries it, let me know if it helps.

Do any of you who routinely work deep in Frame's bowels know if there
is a list of field-specific keyboard shortcuts? (Note that I am not
asking about ESC-sequence shortcuts as were recently discussed on this
list.) I hate this loss in functionality by "upgrading" to a newer
