Was he trying to say they have *to* offer free support? In other words,
does EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product

product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or
not...).

Just guessing here...

Re: [OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Yves Barbion
There is no such thing as a free lunch, Peter. ;-)

By the way, the price ratio seems to be the same for other products too: the
prices in the US store are 53 % of the prices in the European store!

Hmmm, I'm wondering is there is anyone buying FrameMaker 9 Server in Europe,
priced at 10746 EUR (14 967 USD). The price in the US store is 5685 EUR
(7919 USD).

I'm curious what the prices are in China or India, but they don't seem to
have an online Adobe Store (yet).

S1000D in Framemaker

2010-10-29 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Dear all,

Does anyone have some experience with creation of S1000D manuals in Framemaker,
no matter the Framemaker version?
One of our customers and by consequence my project manager asked me to find out
if we can write them via PTC products but price seems the first and main
obstacle, besided the learning curve.
And as we do have a lot of experience with (unstructured) Frame, it would be
obvious to insist on writing them via our beloved tool.
The download of the package is for free, right?

Anyhow, I'm going to have a look at this webinar
https://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p31412590/ but any real-life experiences you all
like to share would be great!

thanks in advance,
Tom

I said this on the list on 18 October, 2009
(http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-October/018261.html
)

Can anyone explain to me why it is that Adobe charges USD399 for the
upgrade of FrameMaker to version 9 for domestic customers but USD515
for the same thing for International customers.

There are no shipping costs when it has been downloaded and even if
shipping were included I don't see how they can charge USD116 for
 shipping a small box anyway.

No I haven't asked Adobe, who there could possibly tell me. Certainly
 no one on the helpdesk.

There was some discussion of it then.

Michael learned a new word then: rort.

Darryl learned something too. If in doubt, obfuscate.

Re: FM 7.0 Locks up on Windows 7

2010-10-29 Thread Mike
I have noticed something similar with my FM 7 and Windows 7 setup. Often, I
will get a Not Responding notification in the FM title bar. It looks like
FM is locked, but after awhile, control does eventually return to FM.

I have been using this setup through a remote desktop connection for
some of my unstructured FM documents. All seems well except for
seemingly random instances where Framemaker just locks up. I can close
FM and restart with no trouble, but it is kind of annoying.

Is there a fix for this behavior? Will setting startup compatibility to
 XP help?

7
2000

2002
X3

8
9

Notice two version 7s and two version 9s, each roughly 10 years apart.

I've learned not to think on these things too hard. It hurts.

Re: Scale or change dpi to make a screen shot filt within printer margins

2010-10-29 Thread Bill Swallow
Change the import DPI. This will retain the image quality while
reducing the size of the image by incorporating more dots per inch. So
long as you don't exceed 600 DPI for the image, it will print just
fine on your 600 DPI printer.

If you resize the image, in a photo editor or some such application,
you will be throwing away image information (pixels) and will be
forcing the software to reinterpret the pixel order of the newly sized
image, creating distortion/noise. Don't do that. ;-)

I have a rule for print to standardize screen shots (native 96 DPI) at
150 DPI. It reduces the image enough to not hog page real estate but
still makes the image easy to see. I adjust accordingly if I am
showing detail (tiny icons and such are imported at 96 DPI) or if I
have an abnormally large screen shot (perhaps imported at 180 DPI or
more) though I try to reduce the screens to the smallest native view
before capturing them to avoid this.

RE: Scale or change dpi to make a screen shot filt within printer margins

2010-10-29 Thread Combs, Richard
Andersen, Verner wrote:

How do I reduce the dimension of the screen shot to make it print within
the marigins? Do I resize or do I change the dpi settings?
Of course I still want the scren shot to print fine on my 600 dpi
 printer

I always set the dpi upon import. Since FM shows the pixel dimensions and the
resulting sizes for some standard dpi options, it's easy to calculate an
appropriate dpi setting for the space available. I was taught that for best
printing results, use a dpi setting that's evenly divisible into the printer
dpi. So, for 600 dpi output, a setting of 120 or 150 dpi would be preferable to
a setting of 135 dpi.

If you have to change the scaling of an already-imported picture, be sure to do
so using the Scaling controls in the Object Properties dialog, not the mouse.
Resizing a bitmap graphic by dragging is a sure way to destroy the quality. If
you're optimizing for a printer, not the screen, it's best to modify the dpi
(using the rule of thumb I mentioned above) instead of the scaling percentage.

  Mike Wickham

I got my e-mail from Adobe about this sometime last week as I recall.
I believe the shipping date is
Nov 1, but forget where I saw that.

And, I have no idea why it is X instead of 10. :)

My only [usual] gripe is with the upgrade pricing (like all Adobe
upgrades!). It is $199 regardless of
whether you have Acrobat 9 Pro *or* Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to go to
Acrobat X Pro (there is only one X
Pro version - nothing called X Pro Extended as far as I can know).

IMHO, the price for going from 9 Pro Extended to X Pro should be lower
 - since we already paid a
premium for that 9 Pro Extended version!

Not just Adobe. Regardless of exchange rates, it's always been the case that
the dollar price is more or less the same numerical value as the sterling
price. Thus anything costing $100 in the US costs £100 over here (which is
sometimes twice the actual price). VAT (purchase tax) varies around Europe, but
is 17.5% here in the UK and about to rise to 20%.

Hyptertext Links Break in PDF

2010-10-29 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi. I've looked up this issue online. A lot of the discussions I have found are
about Frame 8 and later, but we are using FrameMaker 7.1b023 and Distiller
6.0.1 in Windows XP SP3. That's not going to change in time for this document.

Problem: My coworker and I have **identical Distiller settings**. When she
generates a PDF from one of her Frame source files using her Distiller, all the
PDF hyperlinks work correctly. These hyperlinks are cross-references, TOC, LOT,
LOF, and Index links in the original Frame document.

When I send her one of my Frame documents, in which all the hyperlinks work
correctly, and she generates a PDF from it, they are all broken in the PDF.
I've checked the setup of the generated files in the TOC. All have create
hyperlinks selected in the Setup box. (When I generate a PDF using my copy of
Distiller, the links are also broken. So are the fonts, which is why I
originally asked her to generate the PDF for me. . . )

Also, if it matters, when I print to .ps and select Generate Acrobat Data,
the Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs box is selected. The links
are still broken in the resulting PDF

All of this strongly suggests that the problem lies in my FrameMaker source
files. What can it be?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

It doesn't seem like your setups are identical at all.

What does this mean:

When I send her one of my Frame documents, in which all the

Esp. in light of:

When I generate a PDF using my copy of Distiller, the links are also broken

You need to start with what works and go from there.

In the inimitable words of Darryl:

"Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in
the perceived value of the product'."

(That's my new answer for everything).

Was he trying to say they "have *to* offer free support?" In other words,
does EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product
support? If so, this might explain the difference: $229 gets you a
product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or
not...).

Just guessing here...

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

Anyhow, I'm going to have a look at this webinar
https://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p31412590/ but any real-life experiences you all
like to share would be great!

thanks in advance,
Tom

Scale or change dpi to make a screen shot filt within printer margins

2010-10-29 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Hello

I have several screen shots in my A4 manual that are too big to be
printed within the margins of my A4 paper.

How do I reduce the dimension of the screen shot to make it print within
the marigins? Do I resize or do I change the dpi settings?
Of course I still want the scren shot to print fine on my 600 dpi
printer

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Bill Swallow
Well, RoboHelp started getting wonky with regard to versions after
1999. Versions went:

7
2000
9
2002
X3
X4
X5
6
7
8
9

Notice two version 7s and two version 9s, each roughly 10 years apart.

I've learned not to think on these things too hard. It hurts.

Scale or change dpi to make a screen shot filt within printer margins

Scale or change dpi to make a screen shot filt within printer margins

2010-10-29 Thread Combs, Richard

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Sorry about perpetuating a rumour. It must have been Acrobat X, not
FrameMaker X, but I can't find the email. I don't have time to beta
test--probably a good thing since I didn't know what it was anyway.

Fei Min

p.s. My discussion list posting was delayed by hours so I only found out
about my mistake today.

Yeah, it's really quite amusing. I got an email about beta testing
FrameMaker X, and they said that "X" is pronounced "ten".

Say what? When? And are they really going to call it X instead of 10?

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: SERCO-PUBLIC

Not just Adobe. Regardless of exchange rates, it's always been the case that
the dollar price is more or less the same numerical value as the sterling
price. Thus anything costing $100 in the US costs ?100 over here (which is
sometimes twice the actual price).

All have "create
hyperlinks" selected in the Setup box. (When I generate a PDF using my copy of
Distiller, the links are also broken. So are the fonts, which is why I
originally asked her to generate the PDF for me. . . )

Also, if it matters, when I print to .ps and select "Generate Acrobat Data",
the "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" box is selected. The links
are still broken in the resulting PDF>

All of this strongly suggests that the problem lies in my FrameMaker source
files. What can it be?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

You may want to start with updating your FM install to the final patch
version -- p116, from
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22=Windows

Also, you don't mention if you've installed the Microsoft Hotfix for
all Postscript printers under XP -- which fixes lots of distiller
problems.

Hyptertext Links Break in PDF

2010-10-29 Thread Steve Johnson
It doesn't seem like your setups are identical at all.

What does this mean:

"When I send her one of my Frame documents, in which all the
hyperlinks work correctly..."

Esp. in light of:

"When I generate a PDF using my copy of Distiller, the links are also broken"

You need to start with what works and go from there.
