Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified

On some files that were converted from MSWord by an intern last summer, I have noticed that the last paragraph in the fm file cannot have its properties modified nor can the paragraph be deleted. By modifing properties I mean that I cannot change the tag name or any properties. It is like the paragraph itself is locked. Unfornately the properties of the tag are causing other issues in the document dealing with header and footers. All I really want to do is to delete the paragraph, that would solve the problem, but it cannot be deleted. Other parts of the document can be easily edited without issue, it is just the very last paragraph. The other odd behavior I see is that being the last paragraph it is not showing the section sign text symbol like I have seen in every other Framemaker file. RE: Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified
Thank you again to all who volunteered to assist on this issue. Here is an update on what I found: Changing the to allowed me to then change the tag applied to the paragraph to something that would not end up affecting the header. My previous solution of deleting all the XML in the MIF file worked, but it was indeed overkill. I had forgotten that you cannot delete the last paragraph in an FM document anyway. Re: Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified
Bingo! There was in the file. Sadly, changing it to did not resolve the problem. However, removing the MIF code for the entire paragraph did make the offending paragraph go away and it also restored the section sign to the new last paragraph. I did look at the MIF reference guide and found this for PgfLocked: Yes means the paragraph is part of a text inset that obtains its formatting properties from the source document. However, this does not appear to be a text inset, so I am not sure this applies. In summary, I have a solution. Thank you! But I would love to know if there was another way of fixing it other than editing MIF XML, that always makes me nervous. Thanks everyone! You can edit the MIF as text via FrameMaker by selecting it as normal through the FM Open Dialog, but hold the shift key when you click the 'open' button. This will bring up the "open as Text" dialog and you want to be sure to choose the "treat each line as a paragraph" option. RE: Auto-Numbering Problem
Depending on your use of the two sequences, you don't need to have different identifiers for the numbering series, but would have to redefine the numbering definitions. For example, if you only have the List styles as sub-steps under a numbered set, then they should be in the same series and the definitions can be simplified to: Numbered1 < =0>.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered < =0>.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered List < >)\t with NextParagraph set to List In this setup, the two numbered styles reset the second-level counter for the List style (note you don't need a separate 'first' version) to zero by including the < =0> building block, so that if a list is added after a numbered item, it will always start with 1. If instead you use either a numbered sequence or alphabetic sequence as a standalone list, then you should either identify them as distinct numbering series by adding an identifying label (any printable character followed by a colon at the start of the numbering property), such as Numbered1 N:.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered N:.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered * List1 A:)\t with NextParagraph set to List List A:)\t with NextParagraph set to List * or by using an empty building block as a placeholder so the counters are distinct from one another: Numbered1 < >.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered < >.\t with NextParagraph set to Numbered * List1 < >)\t with NextParagraph set to List List < >)\t with NextParagraph set to List * * It is not necessary to set the NextParagraph property to the same style as is being used, as that is the default behavior - to add a new paragraph with the same tag and characteristics. – Les Smalley ps - Tammy, your "StepLetterContinued - L: :.\t" defintion will generate a numeral, where I think you meant to use the building block for a lower-case letter --- On Mon, 12/20/10, Spectrum Writing wrote: They are unique Series labels that identify the paragraphs that are the part of the same numbered flow. Auto-Numbering Problem
Depending on your use of the two sequences, you don't need to have different identifiers for the numbering series, but would have to redefine the numbering definitions. For example, if you only have the List styles as sub-steps under a numbered set, then they should be in the same series and the definitions can be simplified to: Numbered1 < =0>.\t? with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered? < =0>.\t?? with NextParagraph set to Numbered List? < >)\t with NextParagraph set to List In this setup, the two numbered styles reset the second-level counter for the List style (note you don't need a separate 'first' version) to zero by including the < =0> building block, so that if a list is added after a numbered item, it will always start with 1. If instead you use either a numbered sequence or alphabetic sequence as a standalone list, then you should either identify them as distinct numbering series by adding an identifying label (any printable character followed by a colon at the start of the numbering property), such as Numbered1? N:.\t?? with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered?? N:.\t??? with NextParagraph set to Numbered * List1? A:)\t?? with NextParagraph set to List List? A:)\t??? with NextParagraph set to List * or by using an empty building block as a placeholder so the counters are distinct from one another: Numbered1? < >.\t?? with NextParagraph set to Numbered Numbered?? < >.\t??? with NextParagraph set to Numbered * List1? < >)\t?? with NextParagraph set to List List? < >)\t??? with NextParagraph set to List * * It is not necessary to set the NextParagraph property to the same style as is being used, as that is the default behavior - to add a new paragraph with the same tag and characteristics. ? Last paragraph in FM file cannot be modified
FM8 running on Win XP. I have tried Wash via MIF with no success. Does anyone have suggestions as to how this might have happened or how I can go about fixing it? RE: Auto-Numbering Problem
FYI www.scriptorium.com still has copies of Publishing Fundamentals: Unstructured FrameMaker 8 (http://store.scriptorium.com/items/books/publishing-fundamentals-unstructured-framemaker-8-all-detail.htm), and at a reduced price, too. This is a darn good resource for things such as numbering, IMHO. Definitely good to have on hand. Auto-Numbering Problem
Hi, Frame Experts. I am using the following auto-numbering scheme and can get the "numbering" to pick up where it left off after using auto-numbers a), b), c),... Here is an example of what I get: 1. First step... 2. Second step... 3. Third step... a) First substep b) Second substep c) Third substep 5. (Should be 4th step) What can I do? Thanks, Ed Lightle Sr. Technical Writer Command Alkon +1-614-799-0600 EXT. 5225 www.commandalkon.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com.
