Re: progressindication.swf in the FM10 installation directory

2012-12-12 Thread Roman Banks
Hi Richard,

Thank you for your response! I think you are right. :-)

In any case, when Framemaker becomes irresponsive while performing something,
I would like to know if it crashed miserably or just became
temporarily irresponsive. There is no way to discover that rather than sit
and wait. Therefore, I think that in such cases, after a certain timeout, FM
must issue a message describing the status of the action being performed or,
alternatively, show a progress bar.

So, after I came across the progressindication.swf file, I wondered if it is
used by Framemaker at all. I've never seen contexts in which this progress bar
is used by Framemaker.

Kind regards,
Roman

I'm guessing that you're running Windows 7 and that "Framemaker (Not
Responding)" appears in the title bar of the FM window. That's not a message
from FM, it's from the OS.

IMO, Win 7 is far too quick to pull the trigger on the "Not Responding" message
when an application takes more than a (very) few seconds to respond to input.
I've seen that message for several other apps, including Outlook, Word, and
Acrobat.

Re: "Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
It means that some of the documents in a book are set to show
condition indicators (change bars / underline / text color / whatever)
and some aren't.

The way FM's conditional text is implemented is complicated and confusing.

RE: "Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Craig Ede

It usually means that one or more of the files in a book are not set to "Show
All" condition indications. (This even happens if there are now conditional
text formats defined in any of the files.) I routinely set things to with Show
All checked in each file to avoid this. Craig

FrameMaker 11 – Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-12 Thread Simon Thomson
Hi All,

Recently updated to Adobe FrameMaker 11 (within TCS4, which was an upgrade to
my existing TCS 2.5) and all was going well, kind of - until now.

Now with my current project due to be uploaded at the translators asap – a
small Technical Overview publication, consisting of 11 files (Covers/ .fm’s/
.toc, book & 30 images >190 Mb total) – it’s crashing on demand (almost).
Thankfully I can re-create it with minimal effort.

The crash hasn’t happened on any other projects, but to be honest I haven’t
tested that – though the project in question Crashes on another FM11 pc..
conclusion – it’s the content/files for that project, right?

The CRASH – usually happens at/during saving a document you’ve Imported Formats
into, (All formats or even just Page Layouts) from a corresponding file
contained in the same book.

So who has had experience of any Crashes using FM 11 (and fixed it) lol?

Or more specifically has anyone had experience of a FM Project (publication)
repeatedly Crashing during Save or just after Import Formats; Page Layouts then
Saving using the Save button.. any one?

I can’t help think it’s related to the Track Text Edits (TT), MaterPage
formation, Variables &/or Conditional text, I had to create ‘on fly’ for this
urgent Tech Overview in 4 days from my master set of original FM9 files.. (The
FM9 utilised files, were opened directly with FM 11, saved as into a new
project folder, added to a new book created in FM11 then all edited updated
(with TT on where required) and published as Pdf).

So the way I see there’s 2 options going forward;

1. Contact support again, and start the (painful) process of a support
ticket with Adobe FM Support Desk, (correct)?
(As I have a collection of CRASH screen captures and FM crash logs to support
the problem. I found it strange the 1st support staff didn’t review/ask for
these?).

The problem with this is the content is confidential – can’t hand out.

2. Or copy the project, and purge all the files of all functionality,
Cond. Text & TT Edits, Variables then transfer (copy & paste) the harmless
text/graphic content into a fresh/clean FM 11 made file, that contains new
‘hand made’ (not imported Masterpages) and then format all again
(Conditions/Variables etc), then build & test the project again (40+ pages).
Joy..

Or is there an easy way, please let there be..

Thanks in advanced..

RE: "Book is not self-consistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Harpreet Singh Seehra
The contents of generated files, the page count, or cross-references continued
to change while generating and updating files in the book. For example, if a
book contains both a list of markers and an alphabetical list of markers, and
if both contain hypertext links, the number of markers grows each time the
files are generated. If this happens, move one of the generated lists out of
the Include scroll list when you use the Generate/Update command again.

Hi Framers:

"Book is not self-consistent"
Upon generation of indexes and TOC of an unstructured document (9,350 pp).
I have found Verner's post of 2009 in which he claims that all he had to do was
to "disable track changes" to solve the problem.
This did not work for me. I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem.
The Adobe forum opines that this is a result of a circular referent within the
document so that FM can never catch up with the indexing.
I have looked for all such possible solutions, but am still getting the same
message.
Any help appreciated.

|Where I work, we have a sort-of-similar issue, and we solved it by
|using cross-references. It means you'll have to remember to check that
|you're pointing to the right files if you add any new ones in, but it
|beats typing everything in (and you'd have to manually update that
|way, too).

Lin, wouldn't that make it into a link, after PDFing? I'm assuming that
one wants other xrefs to be live links and so one leaves that option
checked in PDF Settings. If xrefs aren't automatically being made into
links, that would work fine.

Roger, can't you use the Volume value at the book level on the files(s)
and then use that building block in the H/F? Or have you already used
that building block for other purposes?

As a final, hacky solution, you could make a super-stripped file (I use
MIF editing to kill, like, EVERY catalog I can) and then have one of
those files for each part, in which you define a Variable to carry the
H/F text? That way, you could still use book-wide variables (in another
blank file or in your main template) to apply "major" Variables and the
part-level blank file to apply "minor" variables afterwards. Kind of
manual, but not nearly so much as other methods.

[I don't have/use FM9+, but it seems like setting the parts up as
books-in-a-book would let you access other Numbering properties
(Section, Sub-Section). So your 'part' text would be the "Chapter"
values--with their para styles handling numbering via autonumbering--and
then "Section" would handle your 'chapter' numbering in the
book-in-book.]

"Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
It means one of two things:

1. The conditions that are *selected* to be viewed in each file are not
the same throughout the book. (Even if you do not apply the conditions
to any text, there still can be conditions defined in the file.)

2. You have conditions that are defined in some, but not all, files.

"Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Fred Ridder

Sorry, Shmuel, but this is not correct.

In the first case you describe, the message you would see is something like
"Show/hide rules are inconsistent".

The second case that you describe is not an error condition and does not
produce any warning message. There is absolutely no requirement that all the
components of a book must have the same set of conditions defined. I have many
books where the generated files and certain "boilerplate" files that are common
to multiple books contain *no* condition definitions while some of the
component files have a dozen or more conditions. Requiring identitcal condition
sets would impose unreasonable restrictions on the ability to use shared files
in multiple books.

What the message in question actually means is that there is at least one
condition that is defined in two or more files where the *indication* options
(the text color and underlining/strikethrough options and/or the "use condition
indicator" toggle) are not identical. The message is warning you that the same
condition may be highlighted differently (or not be highlighted at all) across
all of the files in the book. The issue is easy to fix by importing the
conditional text formatting properties from one file to all the other files in
the book.

"Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Craig Ede

It usually means that one or more of the files in a book are not set to "Show
All" condition indications. (This even happens if there are now conditional
text formats defined in any of the files.) I routinely set things to with Show
All checked in each file to avoid this. Craig

Sorry, I don't understand what you're trying to say here. In the help, have you
studied the subtopics in Home / Using FrameMaker 10 / Books and Long Documents
/ Conditional documents? The help may not be the best source of information
about FM (see the archives for recommended 3rd-party resources), but studying
that section should clarify this a bit for you.

RE: "Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

The issue is easy to fix by importing the
conditional text formatting properties from one file to all the other files in
the book.

It means one of two things:

1. The conditions that are *selected* to be viewed in each file are not
the same throughout the book. (Even if you do not apply the conditions
to any text, there still can be conditions defined in the file.)

2. You have conditions that are defined in some, but not all, files.

You have one or more conditions in one or more files. One or more of these
conditions is set to display the condition indicators in one or more of these

Remove the conditions, set the condition indicators the same across all files,
and you'll be free of the messages.

Remember to also look at any files from which you import formats.

progressindication.swf in the FM10 installation directory

2012-12-12 Thread Roman Banks
Hi Richard,
?
Thank you for your response! I think you are right. :-)
?
In any case, when Framemaker becomes irresponsive while performing something,
I?would like to know if it crashed miserably or just became
temporarily?irresponsive. There is no way to discover that rather?than sit
and?wait. Therefore, I think that in such cases, after a certain timeout, FM
must issue a?message describing the status of the action being?performed or,
alternatively, show a progress bar.
?
So,?after I?came across the?progressindication.swf file, I wondered if it is
used by Framemaker at all. I've never seen contexts in which this progress bar
is used by Framemaker.
?
Kind regards,
Roman

I'm guessing that you're running Windows 7 and that "Framemaker (Not
Responding)" appears in the title bar of the FM window. That's not a message
from FM, it's from the OS.

IMO, Win 7 is far too quick to pull the trigger on the "Not Responding" message
when an application takes more than a (very) few seconds to respond to input.
I've seen that message for several other apps, including Outlook, Word, and
Acrobat.

"Use Condition Indicators setting is inconsistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
It means that some of the documents in a book are set to show
condition indicators (change bars / underline / text color / whatever)
and some aren't.

The way FM's conditional text is implemented is complicated and confusing.

"Book is not self-consistent"

2012-12-12 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I'd be checking if it was the ToC or the IX that was causing it to choke first.
Then I would create a dummy book and gradually add file by file (generating the
offending type each time) until I found the culprit .fm file.

Hi Framers:
I am getting this message
"Book is not self-consistent"
Upon generation of indexes and TOC of an unstructured document (9,350 pp).
I have found Verner's post of 2009 in which he claims that all he had to do
was to "disable track changes" to solve the problem.
This did not work for me. I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem.
The Adobe forum opines that this is a result of a circular referent within
the document so that FM can never catch up with the indexing.
I have looked for all such possible solutions, but am still getting the same
message.
Any help appreciated.

It does, actually, but since we make sure that the text is black, it
doesn't LOOK like it's clickable. People are so accustomed to links

HTH;
David

I'd be checking if it was the ToC or the IX that was causing it to choke first.
Then I would create a dummy book and gradually add file by file (generating the
offending type each time) until I found the culprit .fm file.

Subject: "Book is not self-consistent"

Re: Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-12 Thread Lin Sims
It does, actually, but since we make sure that the text is black, it
doesn't LOOK like it's clickable. People are so accustomed to links
being blue and/or underlined that they never think to hover over text
that looks like all the other text. Social engineering at its finest.
