FM11 - Delay with F8 and F9 applying formats

2013-04-01 Thread Martinek, Carla
Has anyone else noticed a delay when using F8/F9 for apply formats in FM11?

We set up the shortcuts for styles years ago so we only had to 1-3 keys for
applying them. It seems to me in FM11 with the format list popping up, there's
a 1/2 second or longer delay when trying to apply styles.

For example, we use the key combo F8b4ENTER to apply one of our bullet
styles. BUT.. in FM11, I've been ending up with our 1_Heading1 style (since its
first in line of style names) because the system is playing catch up. It's
registering F8, but then has to display the list, so b4 is missed and it just
registers the ENTER, applying the first style in the list.

2013-04-01 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Carla,

Yes, I have seen this, particularly with long lists of formats. It is very
frustrating. I have been thinking of writing a script that will mimic the
old behavior, but I am not sure what is possible.

2013-04-01 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Carla

Yes, I see this too, also in Structured mode, when I'm using CTRL+1, 2 or 3
to insert, wrap or change elements. Very annoying indeed. The shortcut
menu with the list of formats or elements isn't really a shortcut menu
anymore. I want the good old (but fast!) Fm8 behavior back.

Yes, Carla, this delay is very frustrating - especially the delay appearing for
the first use of F8/F9
etc. In may case this may be up to 10 seconds. It seems that the internal table
with the style names
is built up only on first use of the 'short cut' and not just after opening the

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Kapil.

Okay, I just got off the phone with somebody in the FrameMaker team. Her
statement to me was that the Update Plan for FrameMaker is indeed either dead,
or essentially not available anymore to anybody who has less than 10,000 points
in the Adobe systems.

The bottom line: all users with few licenses are essentially shut out.

So, it seems that I did *not* get wrong information from the Adobe sales rep I
spoke to before!

For me, this means that FrameMaker 11 is the _last_ version I will ever use
(after having been on the FrameMaker wagon since 1988).

Because the version upgrade pricing has gotten way out of hand - from my
perspective, _most_ (almost all) of what I paid for with the FM 10 and FM 11
upgrades were bug-fixes for version 9 really!

At $399 for the last upgrade, this is simply not acceptable anymore. Even my
purchase of the 2 year update plan was for naught (based on my sign-up date for
the Update plan, I had to pay for the FM 11 version upgrade _separately_
anyway), since I have not seen FrameMaker 12 come out in that time.

I have already begun looking for alternatives and will make do without
FrameMaker as soon as we can finish this project - I suspect that my last
purchase of any FrameMaker-related product will be for Mif2Go to get all
current FrameMaker documents into some other tool.

Does anyone know what is going on here? If Adobe is going to charge an arm and

version 9 and 10 and 11), then that will be the last nail in the coffin, and I
will use version 11 till it croaks or find another solution.

The cost of FrameMaker has simply become too expensive to work for my needs ...

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Martinek, Carla
Syed -

I've been using Frame since 1991 (Frame 2.0.)

We've been evaluating MadCap Flare and were ready to switch, but when we looked
at FM11 and the new multi-HTML output that appears to be as easy as Flare, it
made us stop and take another look. We don't know which way we're going yet..
back into evaluation mode.

That said, MadCap being a smaller company is, in general, much more responsive
in regards to feature requests. Much like Frame Technologies (and DataLogics)
were in the early days with Frame. Their Platinum support plan is worth its
cost when you are first using it, and Flare imports Framemaker files directly.
However, my recent talk with an Adobe sales mgr letting them know we were
*seriously* evaluating a competitor seems to have gotten me better response
regarding some of the issues I've been having - more so than I've seen in
years.

Cost-wise, it may be worth it to you to look at the Adobe cloud-based
subscription model. That is supposed to include the latest versions whenever
released, but I haven't evaluated the overall cost on a yearly basis yet.

Shocked me at how simple it was to publish from unstructured Frame. Yes, it

2013-04-01 Thread Tori Muir
Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd
love to find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously
evaluating the cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs
the cost of switching to a different program. We use unstructured Frame,
so most of the features added in recent versions of the program have
been of no use to us, thus we're paying top dollar for minimal
improvement. But $499 seems even higher than Frame's one-version
upgrades? Or is this only a better deal financially if replacing Frame +
RoboHelp?

Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

2013-04-01 Thread Tammy Van Boening
FM 10.0 (all patched and current)/Win 7, 64 -bit

I have a book with 10 chapters and some appendices. Many of the chapters are
graphic-laden, but all graphics are imported by reference. None are copied.
Over the last few months when working on this book, I have noticed that
paging through the opened chapters is taking an increased amount of time and
that the files are very slow to refresh with the appropriate graphics
displayed. I have tried the CTRL + L trick as well as the tried and true
Page Up/Page Down trick to get the pages to refresh faster and that doesn't
seem to help at all. It's really slowing me down to try to move through the
chapters this way. If I need to get somewhere fast, I use the CTRL/G
function to go to a specific page and then hope I am w/in one or two pages
of where I want to be.

This issue just seems to have progressed and gotten worse and worse over
time, and I haven't added any more plugins/changed the setup, etc.

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue/encountered this
over time with FM10.

TIA,

TVB

Subject: Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

TIA,

TVB

2013-04-01 Thread Richard Doll
Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy filesTammy,

What type of graphic(s) are involved???

.eps, .tif, .???, or .pfs

note - if printed output is needed . . . colors in CMYK will be required and
FM-10 will not mess with them, even in the Windows environment.

and you will probably want 300dpi for best results

and (in my case. . . of 3k catalog pp/yr - each averaging 3.25 images/p) - .tif
processes the quickest.

i do not know the physical difference between .eps and .tif,

but, a 4.3k .eps file = the print quality of the same graphic when it is a
.tif at 1.25k.

size must have something to do with amount of processing involved.

changing to .tifs has saved me sooo much time . . . is now a pleasure to see
the progress-bar actually hurry across the screen.

if you need a script to do this conversion . . . talk with Rick Quatro

hi,
would someone know what happens with the e-mail alias
fmer...@adobe.commailto:fmer...@adobe.com lately? When FM crashed earlier
this week I tried sending the log file as I normally do but this time it

the Delivery Failure Report tells me that my message

I know I was still able to send log files to this address in January.

I found forum posts about a similar issue with an Adobe e-mail alias for a
different product, but that problem had reportedly been resolved at some point.
is Adobe experiencing problems with their e-mail servers? or are these aliases
being retired?

thanks,

Has anyone else noticed a delay when using F8/F9 for apply formats in FM11?

We set up the shortcuts for styles years ago so we only had to 1-3 keys for
applying them. It seems to me in FM11 with the format list popping up,
there's a 1/2 second or longer delay when trying to apply styles.

For example, we use the key combo F8b4ENTER to apply one of our bullet
styles. BUT.. in FM11, I've been ending up with our 1_Heading1 style (since
its first in line of style names) because the system is playing catch up.
It's registering F8, but then has to display the list, so b4 is missed
and it just registers the ENTER, applying the first style in the list.

TCS version control support

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm starting to migrate my source from CVS to Subversion, which made
me realize that despite being thrown together in Adobe's Technical
Communication Suite, there's no overlap between the integrated version
control. FrameMaker supports SharePoint and Documentum, RoboHelp
supports Subversion and MS Team Foundation Server.

No big deal, just kind of lame.

Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
I believe the Publish command comes with TCS, but when I played with
it the workflow seemed wrong.

The simple workflow where you just create a RoboHelp project and link
to (rather than import) FrameMaker source is not documented very well,
if at all. I created a cheat sheet for my own future reference:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

The instructions are in the FrameMaker project in the /fm directory,
and also in the PDF generated from that project, also in that
directory.

I'm no expert on this by any means... this is just a couple days of playing

Shocked me at how simple it was to publish from unstructured Frame. Yes, it
starts using their default templates. You'll definitely spend a significant
amount of time setting up style sheets, etc. (But probably less than you
would setting up EDDs, etc. for structured Frame the old way.)

Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Tori Muir
We had a client that wanted line numbers in a document, a new feature in
v11. We would not have upgraded otherwise. It was literally a 'if Frame
can't number the lines, we put this back into Word' situation -- for a
400 page specification document. I cannot imagine the pain of trying to
wrangle something that large and complex in Word!

Sadly, having spent the flippin' $600 to upgrade, they were not happy
with how Frame does the line numbers (they wanted contiguous numbers
thru the entire 400-page book, whereas Frame restarts in every chapter
and at every 1000th line). So we ended up having to throw the problem
over to Rick Quatro, who came up with an excellent scripted solution at
a fraction of the upgrade cost. Which is quite possibly why I'm so
peevish about the upgrade price:we spent $600/employee for nothing we
could use.

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Tori,

Your observation of top dollar for minimal improvement sounds right to me,
unfortunately! I also only use Unstructured FrameMaker at this time, btw.

Here is what I have spent on upgrading FrameMaker in the recent past few years
(I did _not_ bother to include the upgrades _prior_ to version 8.0):

$289 for FrameMaker version 8.
$304 for FrameMaker version 9.
$393 for FrameMaker version 10.
$436 for 2 year update plan (included the 2 year update cost for Acrobat Pro
too ... at around $126, as I recall).

Would I say that it has been worth it? Not recently ... particularly since I
think that versions 10 and 11 should have been released as bug fixes for
version 9, as far as I am concerned, and should _not_ have been charged for.

With my luck, FrameMaker 12 will be released _after_ my current plan expires. :(

You may ask why I was wanting to sign up for the Update Plan again? Well, I was
hoping it would be at a lower cost (and make it palatable) than the [expected]
$399 for a version 12 upgrade.

But, at these prices, I can no longer justify using FrameMaker for my
documentation needs. The removal of this Update Plan mostly just crystallized
my decision, I guess. Now, I will probably just spend some money for a purchase
of Mif2Go to transfer my documents out of FrameMaker.

So, yes! Adobe has just lost a long-time FrameMaker customer. Time to move on,
I guess ... after 25 years. :)

(And, FWIW, if I cannot find an update plan for Acrobat Pro on their web site,
then that will also be dropped when that Update Plan expires ... there are
plenty of way good-enough PDF generation solutions out there now, available
for far less cost than Acrobat Pro.)

Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd love to
find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously evaluating the
cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs the cost of switching to
a different program. We use unstructured Frame, so most of the features added
in recent versions of the program have been of no use to us, thus we're paying
top dollar for minimal improvement. But $499 seems even higher than Frame's
one-version upgrades? Or is this only a better deal financially if replacing
Frame + RoboHelp?

Cost-wise, it may be worth it to you to look at the Adobe cloud-based

FM11 - Delay with F8 and F9 applying formats

2013-04-01 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Carla

Yes, I see this too, also in Structured mode, when I'm using CTRL+1, 2 or 3
to insert, wrap or change elements. Very annoying indeed. The "shortcut"
menu with the list of formats or elements isn't really a shortcut menu
anymore. I want the good old (but fast!) Fm8 behavior back.

Cheers

FM11 - Delay with F8 and F9 applying formats

Yes, Carla, this delay is very frustrating - especially the delay appearing for
the first use of F8/F9
etc. In may case this may be up to 10 seconds. It seems that the internal table
with the style names
is built up only on first use of the 'short cut' and not just after opening the
file.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Kapil.

Okay, I just got off the phone with somebody "in the FrameMaker team". Her
statement to me was that the Update Plan for FrameMaker is indeed either dead,
or essentially not available anymore to anybody who has less than 10,000 points
in the Adobe systems.

Regards,

Z

Thanks for the response, Kapil.

Yes, I would like to get information - the last time, I bought a 2 year Update
Plan directly at the Adobe web site (may have been the Adobe store?) in May of
2011, but cannot find that link on the site anymore.

Please do let me know who I can speak to about this (as an FYI, I did get an
e-mail from somebody else on the FrameMaker team, but we did not connect on
Friday).

Hi Syed,

This is Kapil Verma, Adobe Tech Comm Product Manager. Unfortunately, you have
been given wrong information. We continue to offer upgrade plans for both
FrameMaker and Acrobat. If you are interested in purchasing/renewing, I will be
more than happy to put you in touch with the right folks here at Adobe. Sorry
about the confusion.

P.S. It will be great if you can email me separately (off list) with some more
info on who you had talked to and how did you reach them

Thanks,
Kapil Verma

Ok-a-a-y ... I am confused now. I just spoke with an Adobe sales rep who claims
that they are no longer offering the Upgrade Plan for Acrobat and FrameMaker
... huhn!?!?

Even though, Adobe sent me an e-mail in late January reminding me that my
current one was going to expire soon (in May fortunately) and I needed to renew?

Does anyone know what is going on here? If Adobe is going to charge an arm and
a leg to upgrade to the next version of FrameMaker (like I had to do for
version 9 and 10 and 11), then that will be the last nail in the coffin, and I
will use version 11 till it croaks or find another solution.

The cost of FrameMaker has simply become too expensive to work for my needs ...
:(

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

Yes, it
starts using their default templates. You'll definitely spend a significant
amount of time setting up style sheets, etc. (But probably less than you would
setting up EDDs, etc. for structured Frame the old way.)

What "new multi-HTML output"? The only thing I find in the "what's new in FM
11" doc that fits that description is for FrameMaker Publishing Server, which
costs $15,000.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Tori Muir
Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd
love to find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9 >
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously
evaluating the cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs
the cost of switching to a different program.

TIA,

Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

FM11 - Delay with F8 and F9 applying formats

Has anyone else noticed a delay when using F8/F9 for apply formats in FM11?

We set up the shortcuts for styles years ago so we only had to 1-3 keys for
applying them. It seems to me in FM11 with the format list popping up,
there's a 1/2 second or longer delay when trying to apply styles.

For example, we use the key combo F8>b4>ENTER to apply one of our bullet
styles. BUT.. in FM11, I've been ending up with our 1_Heading1 style (since
its first in line of style names) because the system is playing catch up.
It's registering F8, but then has to display the list, so "b4" is missed
and it just registers the ENTER, applying the first style in the list.

TCS version control support

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm starting to migrate my source from CVS to Subversion, which made
me realize that despite being thrown together in Adobe's Technical
Communication Suite, there's no overlap between the integrated version
control. FrameMaker supports SharePoint and Documentum, RoboHelp
supports Subversion and MS Team Foundation Server.

No big deal, just kind of lame.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
I believe the Publish command comes with TCS, but when I played with
it the workflow seemed wrong.

The simple workflow where you just create a RoboHelp project and link
to (rather than import) FrameMaker source is not documented very well,
if at all. I created a cheat sheet for my own future reference:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

The instructions are in the FrameMaker project in the /fm directory,
and also in the PDF generated from that project, also in that
directory.

Why pay anything to upgrade FrameMaker? Adobe hasn't added any
features that I'd pay for since FM8 added Unicode support. I never do
anything new with it so I never need support.

FM11 - Delay with F8 and F9 applying formats

2013-04-01 Thread Matt Sullivan
Hi Carla,

Yes, there's a delay the first time you use Smart Insert in a doc, and if you
type too rapidly, there's usually an error in which tag is selected. I've also
seen where the correct tag is visible (perhaps at the bottom of the list of
available tags, but a different tag is actually selected.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Tori Muir

Which is quite possibly why I'm so
peevish about the upgrade price:we spent $600/employee for nothing we
could use.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Tori,

Your observation of "top dollar for minimal improvement" sounds right to me,
unfortunately!

(And, FWIW, if I cannot find an update plan for Acrobat Pro on their web site,
then that will also be dropped when that Update Plan expires ... there are
plenty of "way good-enough" PDF generation solutions out there now, available
for far less cost than Acrobat Pro.)

Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd love to
find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9 >
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously evaluating the
cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs the cost of switching to
a different program.

Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

2013-04-01 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Sorry all. Here are the answers to several on and offlist questions:

Printed output is not required. The PDFs produced will be viewed online
only.

The graphics are PNGs, all imported and all stored locally. Everything
(files and graphics) are stored on my hard drive.

All are imported in multiples that allow for printing standard printing
considerations (100, 150, 200, or 300 dpi as per comments from Richard
Combs).

Brand new custom system - 16 GB RAM and 8 processors.

Thanks!

Tammy,

What type of graphic(s) are involved???

.eps, .tif, .???, or .pfs

note - if printed output is needed . . . colors in CMYK will be required and
FM-10 will not mess with them, even in the Windows environment.

and you will probably want 300dpi for best results

and (in my case. . . of 3k catalog pp/yr - each averaging 3.25 images/p) -
.tif processes the quickest.

i do not know the physical difference between .eps and .tif,

but, a 4.3k .eps file = the print quality of the same graphic when it is a
.tif at 1.25k.

size must have something to do with amount of processing involved.

changing to .tifs has saved me sooo much time . . . is now a pleasure to see
the progress-bar actually hurry across the screen.

if you need a script to do this conversion . . . talk with Rick Quatro

Does FM 11 crash with change text edits on?

2013-04-01 Thread Linda G Comcast
Framers,

I think I asked this a while ago, but can't for the life of me find any
answers in emails I saved or by searching.

I'm using FM 10, and it has consistently crashed when I'm using track edits,
and I try to save a book.

Can anyone tell me definitively if this still happens in FM 11?

I hate to install the upgrade (I have the upgrade already) and get all my
plug-ins working, only to find out I've not solved the problem.

Thanks!

Why do you feel a need to stop using FrameMaker just because you don't
want to send Adobe any more money?

I own a number of old Adobe apps that still work fine. I use Photoshop
5 and Acrobat 8 all the time. I still have FrameMaker 6 and
Illustrator 7, though haven't had reason to install them on my most
recent PC.

Similar problem in book with 36 chapters. Significant improvement in

Very slow paging in FM 10 in graphic-heavy files

Odd that performance has degraded over time. You might try
defragmenting the hard drive, though with modern hardware that really
shouldn't cause much trouble.

For example, we use the key combo F8>b4>ENTER to apply one of our bullet
styles. BUT.. in FM11, I've been ending up with our 1_Heading1 style (since its
first in line of style names) because the system is playing catch up. It's
registering F8, but then has to display the list, so "b4" is missed and it just
registers the ENTER, applying the first style in the list.
