It doesn't matter *where* the missing fonts are lurking, and they are unlikely
to be in the cross-reference formats. What is making your cross-reference
behave as if they are broken is the fact that there is *any* missing fonts

RE: Unresolved Cross Reference Warning Message

2009-05-20 Thread Ben Hechter
Hi Richard,

Thanks again for your help on this. The problem resolved in an unusual way.

To recap, I was getting an Unresolved Cross-Reference Warning Message each time
I opened the book file, no matter how I tried to refresh or relink the
cross-references. The message never appeared when generating the book, only
when opening the file.

Apparently the message is somehow related to good old Missing Fonts, possibly
via character styles in the cross-reference format, because it disappears when
the files are opened on a machine that has the missing fonts installed.

Well, I'm kind of stumped. All xrefs point to xref markers. The
Source Type = Paragraphs is just a convenience for us humans. FM puts an xref
marker at the beginning of the paragraph you select and gives it a unique ID
(the marker text), which the xref you're creating (and any subsequent ones to
the same pgf) points to. Xrefs become unresolved in two ways: (1) the file they
point to is moved or renamed; (2) the marker they point to is deleted (most
likely) or its marker text is changed (not common).

Assuming you're not moving/renaming files, something's happening
to the markers in the destination file. You need to figure out what and when.
First, make sure you have View > Text Symbols selected so you can see the xref
markers (oversized Ts at the beginning of pgfs that overlap the first text
character). Then reinsert one of the markers that disappears. Now go to the
destination file and look at the pgf that the xref points to. Is the marker
there? (You can see the marker text by selecting the marker and opening the
Marker dialog -- Special > Marker.) Save both files. Is the marker still
there? Close the destination file and reopen it. Is the marker still there?

pesky persistent unresolved cross-references

2009-04-26 Thread Ben Hechter
Can't figure this one out, so I need some collective wisdom on unresolved
cross-references that keep reappearing like Banquo's ghost.

Refreshed the unresolved cross-references, (links are still valid, but marker
type morphes from a paragraph catalog style to a numeric code). All is well
while the book is open, but when I reopen the book at a later time, the
unresolved cross-references reappear!

Thought this might be related to random paragraph overrides, so searched and
removed all paragraph overrides, but to no avail.

wrestling with referenced graphics pointers

2009-01-28 Thread Ben Hechter
Hi,

Wondering if folks have thoughts on how adding the date to a document directory
name each time a draft is archived could impact the pathname of the referenced
graphics.

Seems like I've had some cases where the referenced graphics pointers get lost
because the folder name has changed, and other cases where the referenced
graphics pointers remain accurate, or am I imagining this?

For project reasons, the archived copy needs to open without errors, so
re-homing the graphics directory after the fact is not an option.

Thanks for any wisdom from the collective guru!

A Simple Way to Rename Conditions in Framemaker

2009-01-03 Thread Ben Hechter
Just want to wish everyone on the list 'Happy New Year' and say thanks for all
the time saving tips. I'm happily continuing to use Frame 7 and believe that
Framemaker still cannot be touched for reliable single sourcing and long
document processing.

My tip for the New Year: A Simple Way to Rename Conditions

For a training project, I found it helpful to rename a set of six conditions in
order to keep the condition names self-documenting. This actually happened 3 or
4 times over the course of the project, while my understanding of the training
roles improved.

Came up with the following simple method of renaming conditions:
1. Make a copy of the entire book for safekeeping.
2. Use the Robohelp MIF dll to automatically save all book files as MIF in a
single directory.
3. Open all MIF files simultaneously in EditPadLite
(http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html). You may want to sort the tabs
alphabetically (View> Sort Files Alphabetically).
4. In the EditPadLite Search and Replace panel, set the search and replace text.
5. Click the All Files checkbox to apply a single search and replace action to
all open files, then click Replace All.
6. Repeat step 5 for each condition name to be changed.
7. In EditPadLite, save all the updated MIF files (File > Save All), then
reopen in Framemaker.

The only functional difference between a heading row and a body row

is that heading rows are repeated on any subsequent pages that the

table extends onto. There is no corresponding need for row headings

to repeat, so there is no mechanism for marking a heading column

as being any differerent than a body column. Yes, the formatting

wants to be different, but that's just a matter of applying an

appropriate paragraph tag.

Reasons for using graphic and table anchor tags

2008-10-23 Thread Ben Hechter
I couldn't live without standalone graphic and table anchor tags, if nothing
else than for finding those pesky anchors and selecting the associated content.
Embedding anchors in the surrounding text has never worked well for me.

A neat trick with anchor tags is to set the font to normal size (even add an
autotext marker) to make the anchor more visible in the draft stage, then set
the font to a micro size in the final production layout.

Use View > Color > Definitions > Color Libraries, and select Online in
the pull-down list. Add the color(s) to the active list of colors in
the current document; you can change the name to a text name like
ShellPink, or use the #112233 notation. Then, you'll find the new
color in the options wherever in FM that you specify colors.

Thanks, Fred, but still don't get it!

00FF is four numbers, 0-0-100 is three numbers
FF = 255 not 100, and 100 in hex is 64

Now I'm really confused!

Web colors specifications are RGB already, so the only translation that needs

to be made is a simple mathematical one from the 0-255 (00-FF hex) value

range used for web colorsa to the 0-100 percent range used by FrameMaker.

For example, FF translates to 0-0-100 or pure blue.

Tool tip: Snippet holder

2008-05-22 Thread Ben Hechter
Thanks to everyone who commented on my roundtrip/single-source query for
UserGuide/Help integration. As the experts pointed out, what I am
looking for is single-source linkage, not roundtripping, so I stand
corrected.

BTW, I'm always on the lookout for simple tools that simplify the writing
process and found a no-frills snippets tool that doesn't involve multiple
tabs and multiple files:

Happy framing and remember how lucky you are not to have to use the dreaded
MS-Word for complex list numbering (i.e., two numbered lists in the same

If you had to design roundtrip documentation and help (Framemaker/Robohelp) for

b) begin in Robohelp and export to Framemaker
c) prototype in both and iterate as you go

Certainly interested in tools integration war stories from the battlefront, but
even more interested in the information design perspective...

...potential benefits of the chunking constraint of starting with help first

radical revamping of techpubs

2007-10-28 Thread Ben Hechter
Sorry, but I find the thread both:
a) Off-topic
b) Misleading. Iterative sofware methods require iterative documentation
methods, but by no means do they eliminate the parallel need for early draft
user manuals. In fact, Steve McConnell (Code Complete) proposes early draft
user guides as an agile replacement for requirements specs.

Don't want to bore people with off-topic content, but have had good success
using MS-DOS sed (stream editor) to globally add/change/delete lines of text in

equally well for MIF/RTF.

Once I'm up to speed on regular expressions, may look at perl (as some folks
